I've googled this many times but have not found a solution yet. Can you get external usb hard drives to automount at xfce startup? They automount if I plug them in once xfce is started. I have them connected at boot I get an icon for the drive which I can then mount. But I wonder if I can get them to automount at startup
View 4 RepliesI have a luks-encrypted external drive with lvm on top. When I plug it in xfce prompts me (twice as usual) for the encryption phrase. Then, unlike when I have a regular file system on top and it automounts, I need to activate the volumes and manually mount. Is there a way to make these steps happen automatically?

I feel like I shouldn't have to edit fstab or anything like that. If I can add it to my startup programs, that would be great, I just need to know the command to get nautilus to open up /media/Will's Drive at startup.

I have hal, udev, gamin and autofs installed as well.For some reason though, automount just isn't working. It's starting to annoy me.I can mount the devices manually.I looked around already but most posts just advise you to install hal or something.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWith the GNOME desktop environment, when I plug in my iPhone, Nautilus automatically mounts it and I can browse and download my photos from it, as though the iPhone were a digital camera. Also the F-Spot auto-run dialog pops up asking if I want to import photos from the iPhone.In XFCE though, plugging in the iPhone doesn't do anything at all, except begin charging the phone. No auto-mounting is done in XFCE, no auto-run dialogs, nothing.
What is different here? Is it possible to get XFCE to auto-mount them? I thought XFCE uses GVFS like GNOME does? This is Fedora 12, by the way, with XFCE 4.6.To be sure it isn't just that XFCE doesn't mount digital camera type devices, I tested it with an actual digital camera that plugs in via USB. View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was over in the Desktop forum yesterday and apparently 'event sounds' are available for Xfce and are part of the original package, but I've never seen them made available, that is, the switch to turn them on isn't where it is suppose to be, in any Slackware specific package of Xfce.I've used 4.61 that came with Slackware64 13.1, 4.61 from the Salix depository, 4.62 from Mr. Workman, 4.62 from 'current' and recently 4.8 from Mr. Workman. None of these make the 'event sounds' available.

I was able to click on a short-cut on my desktop , and my mouse came back. I can't open any thing except VirtualBox. When I open it , the top is cut off , so the minimize , maximize and close buttons are cut-off . I really have no idea what to do.P.S. I have XFCE instead of KDE

If i understood correctly recovery mode uses /etc/rcS.d which starts the computer with minimal services and the normal startup is /etc/rc2.d. What can rc3, rc4 and rc5 be used for? Can anyone run different desktops (gnome, xfce, etc) using these runlevels (i am considering that the base system install is the same for all desktops)? Where i can find information about the services that are listed in the rc folders, since some (hibernate, bluetooth, apache2) are not useful to me at the moment.
I am also interested to find out what makes the computer start at it's default runlevel. Is there a way to start rc2 (or rc3, etc) from the recovery mode? When i used to start my computer, it would load into grub, and then it used to get me to the login screen. This is something i would like to avoid (the login screen), and start at the command prompt. My startups are minimal since the computer is always on. I was thinking of 'copying' rcS into rc2 for a normal console start and then start rc3 or rc4 or rc5 to load a desktop.
I am using Squeeze, Gnome, default installation.
Whenever I start XFce, about 20 Nautilus windows also start up, choking the system and generally being a nuisance. I don't even use Nautilus as my file manager under XFce, and whenever I try to delete it or set it not to run on the XFce session manager, it still appears on next startup. I've tried to find where XFce stores its session information - deleting Nautilus shortcuts from ~/.config/session-state did nothing - and had no luck. I'm using Ubuntu (not xubuntu) Lucid.

I upgraded my main PC's Xfce 4.6 to Xfce 4.8 this morning.Now, every time I start Thunar for the first time after a new boot, it takes about 30 seconds to appear, and then about 10 seconds later, a second instance of it appears.After that, Thunar appears instantly every time I start it during that same session. But if I shut-down or restart my PC, Thunar again takes about 30 seconds to start up, and a second instance of it appears about 10 seconds later.
Google searches seem to indicate that people running other distros are also experiencing this problem. On advice in a different forum, I deleted the ~/.config/Thunar folder and restarted my PC, but that didn't help -- it created a new Thunar folder, but the long delay and the double-Thunars are still there every time I run Thunar for the first time in a session.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSlackware 13.1 XFCE. I've come across a strange problem which i've never had before on Slackware. I decided to set a desktop up for my sister. Being girls as they are she wanted to change the wallpaper. I showed her how, however when the machine is restarted the wallpaper turns back to default. In all my slack machines around here, i just simply right click on the desktop and change it. That makes it persistent throughout boots. I'm obviously missing something.

I think), and when I inserted a mo-disk in the drive, it automatically mounted and turned up as /media/disk. I then did an update (all) an now I am on core 2.6.31-12. The mo-disk will not automount any longer. Inserting a USB stick or a DVD still works fine, but I have to manually mount the mo. I have a feeling that it might be security related, but I am not sure.

A couple of weeks ago, my CD/DVD drive stopped working. I'd put in a disk, the light would flash, but it wouldn't appear as a mounted drive. Thinking the drive had finally died, I bought a new one. Same problem.
The drive is recognized by BIOS. I have it as try to mount first in BIOS, and if I put in the Ubuntu boot CD, it boots.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a usb drive formatted using mkdosfs, and it must be manually mounted every time because it says "wrong fs type, bad option. bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error" but it mounts just fine when I manually mount it. It would be nice if gnome would mount it when I plug it in instead of me having to go into root and mount the drive.
