Nov 24, 2010My 10.04 is mounting my USB drive at startup. This is fine except sometimes it mounts to drivename_ rather than to drivename. How do I make it always mount to drivename.

General :: Mounting Drive At Startup
Oct 8, 2010I had windows vista on one partition, xp on another documents on another and programs on another.When I installed ubuntu on a new partition it very kindly let me see all the other partitions and mount them as necessary. I would like all my ubuntu files, documents music downloads to go right on to the documents partition so when I back up that drive to an external I have it backs up the documents drive it has all the files I have created in vista or ubuntu. Eventually I want to leave windows completely but I would still want to store all the ubuntu files on the documents drive.
I can go to "places" and mount the documents drive but what I would like to do is when I fire up ubuntu that the documents drive mounts automatically.

Nov 16, 2010I want to mount a remote drive on bootup. I'm using FC14 and remote machine is FreeBSD. I've written a shell script to mount it. The script contains only one line:

mount 192.168.1.33:/home/user7 /media/mc33
I've to run this script from superuser mode to mount the file system(it works). So to mount it at bootup, I added the shell script to my PATH (/home/me/bin) and added it to Menu->System->Preferences->Startup Applications. Well this doesn't work because the root privileges are not present. I tried fixing it by giving root privileges to my shell script

but it made no difference.
Fedora Hardware :: USB Hard Drive Mounting At Startup?
Feb 14, 2011I just moved from ubuntu to fedora 14 and I'm having an issue with a portable USB hard drive. When the hard drive is connected at startup it mounts at /dev/sda and my other 3 internal hard drives are mounted at /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc and /dev/sdd; of course this is an issue with my FSTAB file since i mount some of the partitions in the first hard drive (/dev/sda) at some special points in my file system, so i need to restart my computer and unplug the USB hard drive to get things working, however when i was working with ubuntu this didn't happen. I need that the USB hard drive mounts at /dev/sdd at startup so my FSTAB could work.

Jun 19, 2010yesterday I did an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and this time it was a mixed experience, most thing worked, but some things like gdm, sound and other setting need(ed) corrections to work again (as in 9.10).In 9.10 I setup my system so that the second partition (data) was only manually mounted after asking for my password.
After updating 10.04 I asking me at every bootup whether I want to manually mount or skip the mounting. And when I manually mount the partition I don't need any password anymore.Why did the upgrade change my setting?Not being an linux-expert, having not documented how I have done the previous setup and being unlucky with google, I could use some pointers in the right direction.Even if I sound not so happy at the moment I really appreciate the good work that went into ubuntu. After setting up my system after each new installation or upgrade I enjoyed a carefree time with ubuntu (where I forget everything I need to setup my system because it just works as it should).

Aug 22, 2010I am having difficulties to mount my NAS (zyxel nsa210) on startup. After some online research, i stumbled upon the "solution".I was advised to write an entry into the fstab-file and that's what i did.And this actually worked like a charm and i was then able to find NAS in "Places". (Not on my desktop since i disabled it). BUT this works not after booting up...meaning there is nothing like NAS in "Places" and i have to mount it manually by using the "sudo mount -a"-command...there is nothing automatic about this solution...So now my question for everyone capable of answering me: "Where did i go wrong? i have installed smbfs and the folder where the NAS should be mounted in actually exists, so the usual suspects should be ruled out i guess

Feb 18, 2011I have just installed ubuntu 10.10 on my win7 laptop (Acer Timeline 3810T) with wubi. I can mount the laptop's windows partition with no issues using NTFS Config (after installing hal), but every time after I reboot ubuntu tells me that it cannot mount the windows partition. If I reopen NTFS config after reboot now my previously-mounted partition shows as having 0Gb of data and there is a new /host partition that represents the windows partition. I can then mount it again by renaming it into /media/Windows and it again works until a reboot.

This works fine if I navigate to the folder every time I startup Ubuntu and then play music through the library in banshee. However, I want to add a command to mount the volume on startup in the startup applications. I tried this in a terminal:

And yes, I did already make the directory "/home/username/Music/Music on Home". I'm thinking that my problem is really how do I write the address of a Windows network drive.

Mar 31, 2010I've migrated back to Fedora as I am just displeased with the majority of debian based distros and Sabayon at the moment. Fedora has grown up quite a bit since FC9 and I'm here to stay. I keep all of my media and documents on a seperate partition on my disk and am wondering how I can have it set to automatically mount it upon startup. It gets kind of annoying having to re-enter my password every reboot just to mount the partition that 90% of my time is spent on.

I have a server designated as F: drive. This server is a linux server. All computers that access this server are windows machines.
In windows, you can make a "Short Cut" that links a Executable program to the F: drive on the server. When you click on this "Short Cut", Windows will "Run" your program in the exact directory the Executable is located.
Thus, if you Make a "Short Cut" called "Customer" on your network F: drive, you can click on that shortcut and "Customer" will run as if you ran it directly off the F: drive, NOT your station drive of C:
Now *MY* scenario what I WANT to do:
I want to copy the above scenario and be able to do the same thing with Linux and WINE.
I have tried to make a "Shortcut" to my Linux laptop, but it fails. I can only "Copy" the program to the laptop. And when I run it on the laptop, it will not run, because it does not recognize the "F:" drive having all the data files, it only recognizes the C: drive of my linux.
When I tried to make a "link", it says something like "LInk not supported by this file".
So, is it possible to make a "shortcut" to a executable file on the network server, so that if you run the shortcut, it will run the program as if it is located on the F: server instead of the linux station? In Windows, it has a field that says "Target", in which the file will be ran in that directory.
Ubuntu :: USB Flash Drive Not Mounting?
Feb 25, 2010My USB flash drive has stopped working with Ubuntu.
Normally when I remove it I unmount it first, but the last time I just unplugged it. After I unplugged it, it started not working.
When I put it in a windows machine, it shows up as drive E: but says "no disk" when I try to access it.
In my Ubuntu machine I can see it as USBDrive under Places > Computer, but it's unmounted. When I click mount nothing happens.

Jun 10, 2010I'm having a problem on startup where GRUB seems to time out attempting to mount my main drive. Here is the error it gives me:

I cleared everything off but am trying to see if I can arrange it so that I can back up from linux and access (if need be) from a Windows machine.

Jun 8, 2010So if I boot without a DVD or CD in my optical drive, then I attempt to put one it, it doesn't mount. I try mounting with the terminal and that fails as well. If I boot with the media in the optical drive, it works fine. (this problem occurs both on my desktop and laptop and I know the DVD and CD's work in both 9.10 and in windows, This error also occurs with Linux Mint and Sabayon leading me to believe this is a kernel issue).

Aug 2, 2010I added a second internal hard drive to my system.It took a while to figure out how to mount it, and I thought all my problems were over.I want to use this for storage for Transmission since this would keep all the files independent of my other hard drive.One thing that I noticed is that when I restart my computer it doesn't automatically mount the drive (Transmission gives me an error message saying it's not able to access the drive).So I remounted it, and noticed that it restarts all my torrents.One thing that I noticed is that Transmission keeps the .torrent files in /tmp and IIRC there is an option to move them wherever you want to in Deluge (I don't know if this will help anything or not).I don't like Deluge, but if it's somehow easier.
So how can I retain my settings prior to restarting and make this permanent?I do like to turn my computer off from time to time, and I am quad booting with other distros that I like testing out.

Aug 27, 2010I purchased a new hard drive, plugged it in, formated it, edited fstab to auto mount it, and though it is mounting the drive, it won't allow me write privileges. I can read the drive, but I need root access to write to it. The drive giving me the issue is sdd1. The others, I have no problems with. I can read and write to those without a hitch.

Nov 4, 2010Running 10.10 64bit Kernel 2.6.35-23 I am noticing what I think is a big hiccup in my boot process my drive is mounting at around the 4sec mark then my system pauses for roughly 13 seconds, you can even it see it on the screen a blinking cursor comes up the entire time. Then during the rest of the boot my drive will re-mount at least 4 more times. Then during use of my system there will be random re-mounts throughout the use. Here is the mounting message

I just noticed the pausing recently after an update but have been seeing this re-mounting since install. Are these normal? They dont seem like it to me, and if they are normal why such a long time on the initial mount and every re-mount takes 4-5 seconds. Let me know if I can provide any further info as well.

Feb 2, 2011I don't know anything about Unbuntu I installed it because I had a virus and I didn't have a copy of windows. I have an extra HD with lots of media on it. At first it seemed to show up but then it disappeared. I did the sudo commands and the disk shows up as sdb. I have no idea what I am doing or what to do and all the guides keep talking about adding partitions and programs I have to dl from the net. This is a stand alone computer with no net connection.

Apr 19, 2011I have installed Musix distro on my brand new amd 64 dual core computer but for some reason it is not showing in the media folder. Been a while since i mounted a slave and plain ubuntu seems to do it automatically so i forgot what commands i need to see it. Would love some help as the Musix forum is messed up. They have most of their forum in spanish and the parts that are english are not complete. I managed to sign up but that damn thing is really messed up. I signed up as over 18 but it sends you a form to have signed as under 18. Made 2 different users and still the same problem.
