If I have a HDD with 3 particions, I have 1 MBR at the begining of the HDD, and 3 VBR (volume boot record). One VBR for each partition in the begining of each partition. But what I dont understund is if first VBR in the first partition (512 bytes) are the same 512 bytes in MBR?

I have been trying with several different distributions and finally tried with Ubuntu. The iso matched up with the hashes but the boot record is still not being found...are there tips other than burning slower to ensure a good burn?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot computer. The WindowsXP "side" has been infected with a rootkit virus. So far UBUNTU has not been affected to my knowledge. I have not yet been able to remove the virus from the WindowsXP "side". I am thinking of deleting the NTFS partition and have the computer fully dedicated to UBUNTU.
Now for my question. Is there a possibility that the virus resides in the MBR and that I need to "rebuild" the MBR to actually remove the virus? Even more extreme, should I totally re-install UBUNTU in the name of safety and precaution.
I've been using squeeze for a year or two now, on a PC dual booting with windows xp. Not long ago I thought that, as it's now become the stable release version, I'd do a fresh install, which I've been trying to do with the first two dvds. The installation proceeds as expected, up to and including setting grub. However, although grub saysthat it has detected windows xp, and I tell it to set up the dual boot, the computer on reboot goes straight into windows xp, with no on-scrteen option shown for choosing debian.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a new Dell Inspiron 1545 with a dual-boot setup: Kubuntu and Windows 7. A long, tedious story made short, I have Kubuntu working but cannot for the life of me get the wireless adapter to work in Windows 7. Since the Microsoft universal fix consists of reinstalling the OS, that's what I plan to do.
That said, I'm concerned that Windows will not just reinstall itself, but wipe out the boot record used by grub. I've invested enough time setting up Kubuntu that I really don't want to start from scratch (again) with both OSs.
How to reinstall Windows without wiping the boot record? If not (i.e. Windows will kill whatever grub has in place), is there a way to use the Kubuntu disc, or another linux disc, to reinstall grub afterward, thereby leaving the linux partitions intact?
I have recently installed Debian alongside Vista on the same boot menu using the GRUB booting device. Only problem is, I couldn't boot Vista at all any more, so I removed my Debian installation from that drive. But the GRUB boot record persists, I don't have the Recovery disk to restore my old system, so I have to find a way to manually remove the GRUB track and put the old record in its place. I assume there was a copy made of it by the installation program, now my only problem is to find that file and copy the content back in place (at the address at the very beginning of the drive) all that by using Linux code, since that is all I have left. Being new to this game, I have no idea how to begin writing the right command for a job like this

I think I managed to corrupt my master boot record, or have a very intractable problem with Grub.
I'm not sure how I did this, but my desktop will boot Ubuntu fine from a USB, but every time I try to install it, the install seems to go fine, but when I finish the install and the machine tries to boot the OS from it's hard drive, it does not work. The monitor does not get a signal and it just goes to sleep.
I tried posting here to resolve the problem before, tried everything on this thread: [URL]

I have even tried running the system from a USB, running a "shred" command for the hard drive and then reinstalling - my theory was that the shred command would destroy all the data on the hard drive anyway, and allow a "clean" install from whatever was corrupt on it, but no luck - when I installed Ubuntu on the hard drive, same problem.
I'm not clear where the problem lies now, I'm assuming there is something up with it's master boot record, but there are no partitions on it's hard drive and I started with a completely blank, unformatted drive.
i installed ubuntu inside windows but someone instead of uninstalling it directly deleted the ubuntu folder inside windows ,thinking that the partition will be deleted. but when i restarted the system and command prompt came and said unable to find boot record and i couldn't boot windows as well and a grub prompt came like grub>, then i inserted the windows boot cd and repair the boot record error but my problem is , instead of doing this way, can i do so by grub prompt directly without using winidows cd.
View 1 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I installed my first Linux product, which is Debian 6.0, and I installed the GRUB booting device on my main boot record, as it was suggested that it was a harmless step to take. Unfortunately, some quirk in my system made GRUB believe that I had XP when in fact I have Vista, so the options I have now are to boot Debian or to boot XP which is not on my computer. In other words, I have to get rid of GRUB now, but I'm realizing that he's not such an easy customer to kick out. I have moved my Linux installation to another drive, but the old GRUB always stays in place, and my Vista is stuck there frozen for eternity. So after considering all kinds of possibilities, I have come to the conclusion that the easiest way to restore my original boot record would probably be to find its backup copy that I assume the installation program made, and to copy it back into the right address at the beginning of the disk. I don't have the Vista recovery CD, so I really have to do this manually. So now my questions are these: did the installation program make a copy of the boot track, and if so, where did he put it and under what name, and finally, what command can I use from within the Debian terminal, which is now my only tool left, to copy the content of thesaid file into the first 512 bytes of the hard drive? I know that would be a simple matter for any serious geek, I guess I must be a little rusty. Anybody feel up to it?

I follow these instructions to the letter, the live "CD" works fine - using a USB stick, I do not have a DVD drive, in- or external -. When I try to install Ubuntu from the live system, it corrupts my master boot record, I get the Error: No Such Device #####################. After I fixed this I tried to install Ubuntu under windows, using the same usb's wubi installer. The install completes, I reboot, and after selecting Ubuntu in my boot menu, I get that likewise well known error with wubildr.mbr [URL]
Rebuilding the USB stick doesn't make any difference, it behaves the same way. The wubi installer has the very annoying habit of downloading the iso during the installation procedure every time, I don't know why I can't just select the iso downloaded in the first step of the above link. This way I cannot check any md5 because I have no idea where it downloads the iso. What should I do to get Ubuntu working? Reinstalling any of my Windows systems is not an option, it is every time like gambling, I am using the same installation files, but sometimes the result is just not the same.
I have a 1TB hard drive which is formatted with FAT32. Attempting to make a new partition I clicked the format drive button in Disc Utility. I chose Master Boot Record and something was written to the drive. So now I can't mount the drive and Disc Utility says that there aren't any partitions. I don't think this can be true because I had 200 GB of data on the drive and it would have taken longer to delete all that. At least I think...

View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to set up a web server on a PIII machine with about 800MHz processor and just under 500 megs of RAM. So how would I go about configuring Fedora 12 to do this? I've tried the small spins and I just don't know how to configure it so it will install properly. I was able to get the Gnome spin on it but when it booted I couldn't get through the log-on screen. I have an AGP NVIDIA Geoforce 6200 video card. I'm wondering it that's it. The only Linux distros I could get on the machine was Puppy and Debian. Puppy did not edit the boot record very well. Debian went on there with very minor issues, but edited the master boot record very well so that I can dual boot to WindowsXp HE. I also tried to put Centos on there but the Live CD is not installable. I have to make an installation CD from the DVD Package. Anyways, as far as Fedora is concerned, I just want a utility, light weight spin that has web-server, mail server, and eventually MySQL. Other wise I'll have to commit treason and use the horned Debian as my savior in this battle.

I run alsamixer from terminal, adjust speaker volume up and I'm ok until next boot. How do I set it to boot with speaker volume at last setting or all the way up?
View 3 Replies View RelatedBefore creating this topic I googled a lot and found lots of forum topics and blog posts with similar problem. But that did not help me to fix it. So, I decided to describe it here. I have a virtual machine with CentOS 5.5 and it was working like a charm. But then I turned it off to make a backup copy of this virtual machine and after that it has a boot problem. If I just turn it on, it shows the following error message:
Activating logical volumes Volume group "VolGroup00" not found Trying to resume from /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01 Unable to access resume device (/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01) ... Kernel panic ...! During the reboot I can see 3 kernels and if I select the 2nd one the virtual machine starts fine, it founds the volume group etc. (But there is also a problem - it can not connect the network adapters.) So, it is not possible to boot it with the newest kernel (2.6.18-194.17.1.el5), but it is possible with an older one (2.6.18-194.11...)
I looked into GRUB's menu.lst and it seems to be fine. I also tried #mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18-92.el5.img 2.6.18-92.el5 no luck! Yes, I can insert DVD .iso and boot from it in "linux rescue" mode.

I have a dual boot system with XP and Ubuntu 9.04. When I boot into XP the volume is fine, but when I boot into Ubuntu the output volume is half what it is in XP. I have to crank my stereo way up to get it to a decent volume. Is there any way to boost the output volume in Ubuntu?

The Gnome GUI volume control is fine in normal circumstances but to set it accurately requires a bit too much fiddling, IMO - now if someone were to adjust the programming so a dB readout accompanies slider movement, rather than as a pop-up after adjusting the slider, 'twould be more ergonomic, IMO.
So what happened is i had a small encrypted lvm volume that i no longer need because I have bought an external HDD and used truecrypt on in. So after I transfer all the files off of the encrypted partition, I restart and drop into single user mode and remove the unneeded volume. When i attempt to restart, instead of going to the login screen, when the boot progress bar is full, it says "welcome to emergency mode: enter rootssword for maintenance or press control D for normal mode" or something along those lines. I tired control+D, but that just brought me right back to the emerengy mode screen. I put in my root password and tried startx, but then x gave me this error: "can not start D-bus, can you call q-dbus?". After that i tried both "service dbus start" and "dbus-launch", both of which failed. Is there any quick remedy to this situation, or do i have to reinstall

One volume contains live data, the other is just a rsync'd copy of that data, which isn't critical to the users. The e2fsck is taking forever in single user mode, so i'm wondering if there is a way after the volume with live data becomes clean from e2fsck fixing everything, if i can boot the server and have it skip mounting the other dirty volume (/dev/md1) just this once, so i can get the server up with the live data available to users. Then with /dev/md1 unmounted with the server up, I should be able to e2fsck that until it comes back clean, then do a mount /dev/md1,Please let me know how I could do this, I'm running RedHat if that matters. I'm quickly running out of time here,

Problem is when I boot I enter the passphrase and then Debian starts to load a bit and then it stops and won't move again. I was booting just fine in a previous installation on a MBR-partitioned disk (now it's GPT-partitioned). I have to add that during installation I added a second encrypted volume on a HDD (while / is on a SSD) that mounts to /data. When few days ago I installed it on the MBR-partitioned disk it asked me for the /data passphrase pretty fast, now it just seems to boot and asks me only one passphrase until it freezes.
I have a Fedora 15/Ubuntu 11.04 dual boot. In Fedora, I just created a new logical volume. How do I ensure that anything I put in it - all files and folders - will be accessible in Ubuntu? II also want to be able to add files and folders in Ubuntu and then read and write them in Fedora...

But when I shutdown Fedora and start up Ubuntu, I have to run the same chmod command again. How can I make read/write permissions endure between both distros?
Every time I boot into my laptop, there is no sound. Going to alsamixer in a terminal shows that the "Speaker" volume is constantly getting reset to 0, and bringing it back up fixes the problem. How can I get Alsa to remember to keep the speaker volume above 0?

During installation, I've used the guided encryption setting because neither GRUB nor LILO would ever install on the LVM configurations I created myself. So after installing Ubuntu 11.04, when I boot regularly, the computer freezes completely. When I try to launch the recovery mode kernel, I get this far and then the computer locks up, too. You can see the label is sdb5_crypt which is a bit odd since the partition is on /dev/sda. However, I already tried changing grub.cfg to /dev/sda instead of /dev/sdb but that didn't do anything. This is all a bit odd to be. The funny thing is I've been trying to set this computer up for a month and I'm a professional programmer (Java, JavaScript, Groovy) with 20 years of programming experience and I never thought Ubuntu would be this hard to install on a more-or-less stock Intel box.
