I'm on 10.10 Everytime I start my iMac, the volume in alsamixer is reset to zero. It takes 8 seconds to fix, but I'd rather not have to do this every time I boot up. Anyone know how to fix this?
View 1 RepliesEvery time I boot into my laptop, there is no sound. Going to alsamixer in a terminal shows that the "Speaker" volume is constantly getting reset to 0, and bringing it back up fixes the problem. How can I get Alsa to remember to keep the speaker volume above 0?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have 5.1-speaker set, confed succesfully with alsa. alsamixer -c 0 -command shows volume of all the speakers I want to set up. My problem is, when I have alsamixer open and change main volume from gnome-panel (it's called pavucontrol for me, pulseaudio?) it "resets" all speakers to max (100%). Only master volume changes like planned. For example, if I have front speakers set to 50%, center to 75%, surround to 100%, subwoofer to 40%, when changing volume from gnome's panel it only changes master volume, and puts every other speaker to max. How to prevent this? Do you have any clue? I had not any problems with this in openSUSE 11.1. Alt+F2 not working with Emerald decorator Screens go black after 10 minutes or so in openSUSE 11.2

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Banshee 1.6.0 under OpenSUSE 11.2. I listen to a lot of podcasts, and whenever Banshee ends one show and switches to another, it resets the sound volume from the value it was set at during the previous podcast.
I couldn't locate anything in the Sound preferences, and Banshee doesn't seem to have anything specific about making the playback sound sync with the system volume.
ALSA mixer resets my speaker volume to zero and changes my USB headset volume to a very low level. How can I get ALSA Mixer to remember my volume settings from last boot or if there's no other option, a way I can make it adjust the levels to a predetermined level automatically on startup. I'm using 10.10 with pulseaudio.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI done searches for "clock" and found similar threads, but no real fix that is working for me. My clock resets when I boot into linux. It does not happen in windows or bios even on cold boots. The battery is replaced and good** the old battery was by all measures dead (0.6v), but still seemed to have enough power for the clock, since windows tested fine with it.
I have tryed setting it to local time, UTC.. etc... My timezone is GMT (london). "sudo /sbin/hwclock --systohc" Although I have windows, I do not use it except the few times to test this, so no conflict.
I followed the instructions that came with the 802 .11 Linux STA driver and was able to initialize my card and connect to a protected network! The instructions also tell me how to load the drivers at boot time, but I get an error when I try to run

originally my sounds worked completely, but now I only have sound out of the headphone jack. I used all the OEM software originally, but ended up following this step-by-step guide to run all pulse audio. After installing that I noticed that the sound keys on my laptop still showed that they changed the volume, but didn't have any effect in PulseAudio Volume Control... fixed that by changing the keyboard layout. While that bugged me the sound still came out of my speakers and headphone jack, but just recently the speakers randomly stopped working. View 5 Replies View RelatedOne of the left speaker on my macbook 2,1 has no sound. The channel is not muted in alsamixer. If you go into sound preferences and change the card to a surround 4.0. The both the front and rear right speakers work. Front is higher sound (tweeter) rear is the lower sounds. (mid-sub) however on the left side the left front does nothing. to the naked ear you can tell not as much sound is coming out of the left side. one speaker is not functioning. is there a fix for this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got a final revision of the G4 Mac mini, the 1.5GHz model, dual booting 10.04 LTS and OS X. One of the issues I've had is that the internal speaker doesn't work under Linux, or so it's been reported on various post and sites. It turns out it's a simple matter of flipping some ALSA control options. With an ALSA mixer you must enable both the Speaker and the Headphone to get audio to play over the internal speaker. It will still play over the external headphones/speakers if they are still plugged in. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the ALSA, OSS, PCM or snd_powermac drivers or just something setup wonky in the configs. I've used both GNOME ALSA Mixer GUI and the alsamixer command line tool to do this. The alsamixer tool will mostly work in an X-term, as the F-keys don't pass though. It is fully functional on a console login. I also noticed that audio plays back per-user. When I switch from X to a console he sound is cut off, and when I get logged in as the same user the audio comes right back in.

Both my speakers and headphones have output, are affected by the volume control and it even detects when I plug in headphones and stops output to the speakers. However the moment I adjust the volume, output to my headphones stops, and my speakers start.

Whilst sound works for MBP5,1 / 5,2 under Karmic, it could definitely be better - mainly the master volume does not affect the headphone output, and the speakers don't automute when headphones are plugged in. However, I've finally got around to writing a patch for alsa which fixes this - the patch is against the latest version of alsa-drivers (1.0.22.1). If you want to test it (since so far I've only tested it on my MBP5,1 - any feedback from MacBook 5,1 / MB(P) 5,2 owners would be great too) follow these instructions: First make sure you don't have any versions of linux-backports-modules-alsa installed:

when I was entering a sed command, with a back-reference to the scnd set of parenthesis. 2 reset X, or so I though ... I did some experimenting, and lo and behold, I could reproduce the behaviour even on the xdm login screen, when I typed in my sed expression as the name. Not every time, not accurately, but maybe 3 out of 10 times I can reset X by pressing 2 on the numeric row in a quick succession with other keys, and the I at first thought was required to trigger the behavior is not necessary at all. Nothing in the X-log, nothing in ~/.xsession-errors.
I'm annoyed, and as X is quite sizable and spawns a truckload of processes I'm highly reluctant to try and reproduce the behaviour under the control of strace (mind you, since it seems to be "speed" related it maybe wouldn't even occur under strace ;}). I'm running Slack64 13.0 on a Thinkpad R500 with an Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics chipset, can't think of anything else that might be special with this hardware in regards to X.

My time capsule's ip is 192.168.1.10, it's name is "Time Capsule", the drive I'm trying to mount is called Movie HD
If I input the following command:
sudo mount.cifs //192.168.1.10/Time Capsule/Movie HD /media/timecapsule/ -o pass=mypassword
I get a connection refused error.I tried a couple different variations such as "/"Time Capsule"/Movie HD",etc,every combination, but I get a connection refused error (111) every time.(I have two drives on my time capsule, the internal, Movie HD, and an external usb one, Media HD, I want to actually mount them both)On my time capsule I did set it guest access to read only... Also, when I go to my places> network I do see the time capsule in the list, but I get an error message that it can't access the shares when I try to open it.
I am trying to extract just a few files/folders from a Time Machine backup, but can't seem to find them. The drive is automatically mounted in Ubuntu, and am able to access after enabling view hidden files, the HFS+ Private Data Directory. But that is a jumbled array of thousands of numbered folders, with each taking a fair amount of time to open on this aging Dell running 10.10.
I've tried running the standard Places - Search for Documents, with 'Show hidden and backup files' enabled, but that won't pull up any of the search times I'm going for (and seemingly won't find anything at all on the drive). So, is there any way to decipher the directory tree so as to be able to access this data from Ubuntu? Or perhaps a file embedded somewhere in there that lists out the original structure, so that I can use it as an index to see what number correlates to what originally named folder?
When booting Fedora 11, my system hangs for a very long time on starting udev. Sometimes I get an I/O error. However, my hardware is fine. I do eventually get in to the system.
View 7 Replies View RelatedJust wanted to share a script that I wrote to migrate data off of a Time Machine backup. As anyone who's tried this knows, it's not straightforward because most directories are pseudo-hardlinked according to some hare-brained scheme Apple came up with. (Hard-linked directories actually show up as zero-length regular files with bizarre link counts greater than 128. The link count corresponds to a directory called "dir_$N" (where $N is the link count) inside of a special directory at the root of the Time Machine volume called ".HFS+ Private Directory Data^M" (where the ^M is a literal carriage-return character).)
Here's the script (it's also attached, for convenience). It works pretty much the same as "rsync -av <SRC_DIR> <DST_DIR>" would, if the pseudo-hardlinks weren't in the way. In other words, it just recursively copies the first directory to the second. So the first argument (the source directory) is typically something like
/media/<TIME_MACHINE_VOLNAME>/Backups.backupdb/<HOSTNAME>/Latest/<VOLNAME>
if you want the entire latest backup. It can also be a relative path, if you've already changed to a directory inside the backup.

I purchased a macbook (for cheap) without a hard drive and decided to go with Ubuntu 10.10 on my new drive.
This laptop has serious overheating issues. I installed the sensor applet and the fans are not coming on, even when the core temp exceeds 167(f). The base of the laptop becomes hot enough to fry an egg on.
I'd like to find a way to make the fans come on in an automated fashion (without having to do it at the command line each time I want them to come on). I'd even be happy with them on all the time if that will resolve the issue, as the laptop overheats until shut down / freeze every time I use it.

During Slackware 13.1 setup, I chose the hostname stella-sl2. This hostname is also the one that the system is displaying before I configured network access. After configuring wired network access to my Apple Time Capsule, my hostname suddenly changed to INTERFACE='eth0'. As a result I'm noticing some very strange things, like the login prompt which has become "INTERFACE='eth0' login: ".
After configuring wireless network access to the Time Capsule, the hostname changed to "INTERFACE='wlan0'". Note that, during boot, wlan0 is brought up AFTER eth0.
Also strange is this:

Until now, it was only a minor annoyance, it didn't prevent anything from happening, internet connection was not affected. But now I'm configuring sendmail which needs to talk to a relay SMTP server, and sendmail "HELO"'s itself using the bogus hostname:

Probably this is caused by the Time Capsule not adhering to standards. However, the Time Capsule's firmware is the latest version, so I cannot fix this. Is there a way to prevent dhcp from changing the hostname? How can I make sure that the hostname that I configured during setup remains active?
