General :: Boot Server With One Dirty Volume Not Mounting?

I have a server that has 2 dirty volumes, both of which are very large. One volume contains live data, the other is just a rsync'd copy of that data, which isn't critical to the users. The e2fsck is taking forever in single user mode, so i'm wondering if there is a way after the volume with live data becomes clean from e2fsck fixing everything, if i can boot the server and have it skip mounting the other dirty volume (/dev/md1) just this once, so i can get the server up with the live data available to users. Then with /dev/md1 unmounted with the server up, I should be able to e2fsck that until it comes back clean, then do a mount /dev/md1,Please let me know how I could do this, I'm running RedHat if that matters. I'm quickly running out of time here,

Just the last day or so, I've noticed a long pause when I boot my laptop, with lots of disk activity. dmesg says:

Why would there be a 15-second pause (during which the disk is slammed) between mounting root and mounting swap? During this time I see nothing but a blank purple screen, there are no cycling dots or text scroll. Is this normal and I'm just freaking out over nothing because there's no indicator of progress? I have a raid 5 with 5 disks, I had a disk failure which made my raid go down, after some struggle I got the raid5 up again and the faulty disk was replaced and rebuilt itself. After the disk rebuilt itself I tried doing a pvscan but could not find my /dev/md0. I followed some steps on the net to recreate the pv using the same uuid then restored the vg(storage) using a backup file. This all went fine.I can now see the PV, VG(storage) and LV's but when I try to mount it, I get a error "wrong fs type" I know that the lv's are reiserfs filesystems, so I did a reiserfsck on /dev/storage/software, this gives me the following error:reiserfs_open: the reiserfs superblock cannot be foundNow next step would be to rebuild then superblock, but I'm afraid that I might have configured something wrong on my raid or LVM and by overwriting the superblock I might not be able to go back and fix it once I've figured out what I didn't configure correctly.

I added another disk in server and create mount point in fstab:
/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 /opt ext3 defaults 1 2
Everything is working perfect... halt, boot, system... but when I wanna to reboot with a command sudo reboot, it hangs at the end of all initialization when it's rebooting and some number. If I remove disk in fstab, than reboot working.

After having problems with lxde crashing while running Jessie, and re-installing Wheezy, I am not able to mount my WinXP drive. In the past I was able to run pcmanfm and mount the drive from there. It would ask for my root password and then would mount the drive. Now, however, when I click on the drive icon it gives me an error message saying authentication required.
One thing is that when I installed Wheezy I had the WinXP drive disconnected so as to not inadvertently install Wheezy on the wrong drive (I have two identical drives). After installing I connected the WinXP drive and then did a grub update. I can boot either drive, as expected, but I can not mount the WinXP drive from pcmanfm. Do I need to change the Policykit?

Does anyone have any good articles on mounting a Ubuntu volume as an iSCSI share on a windows box? Originally I was just going to use a SAMBA share but it turns out samba has issues with my lan security. Whenever I mount any of the ntfs volumes, instead of opening the volume, Rhythmbox starts automatically and scans volume for media files. It has nothing to do with media files as it starts even when there is no media file in the volume.

Alternate CD on USB - Natty not mounting Encrypted Volume I get initramfs prompt. I have a Dell Inspiron Duo. I've tried to install Natty i386 and AMD64. I set my / (root) and swap under LVM under an encrypted volume. Used manual partitioning. But after reboot, I successfully enter the passphrase, swap and root are not mounted.
Now, I've had this working with 10.10. System seemed a little quirky after the upgrading it to Natty. So, I wanted a fresh install. Used Unetbootin to run ISO from USB and also from one of my other partitions. I've tried installing at least 10 times, some repeat, some variations.

A new open source package called Lightning Rod will help to close security exploits in Adobe's dirty Flash code. A presentation made at the 26th Chaos Communication Congress showed that the package does its job by reviewing incoming code before the browser executes it. Heise Online is reporting that this method can block over 20 different known attacks and can even be used to filter out malicious JPG attacks. As more vulnerabilities are discovered they can be added to Lightning Rod to close the breach.

I just did a clean reinstall of Ubuntu (10.04 --> 10.10). After the install, any time I do CPU intensive work, my PC is suddenly shutting down like it's overheating.Everything was working fine for months, and started having problems immediately after the reinstall. so this is not a problem with my hardware, and it's not a problem with my fans needing cleaning -- it's a problem with software. So please don't tell me "that sounds like overheating, clean your fans". Something is different in software-land between 10.04 and 10.10 that is causing this to happen -- I assure you that the upgrade did not magically fill my fans with cat hair.
I have checked my log files, and can't find anything related to overheating -- searches for things related to lm_sensors, "temp", and "thermal" are not turning up anything in the system logs (syslog, kern.log, or messages). I also looked at the logs around the times of the sudden shutdown, and couldn't find anything unusual.How can I diagnose this? I'd like to file a bug report, but since I can't find anything in the logs, I honestly have no idea how to go about providing useful information.Is there anything besides overheating that might be causing my laptop to suddenly shut off?

I have a RHEL4 system with 2 250GB physical volumes. There is a boot partition that is outside LVM and 2 logical volumes (swap and root) within a single volume group. This volume group bridges the 2 physical volumes.
I would like to clone this system onto a single 1 TB physical volume that will replace the 2x250GB currently in use.

I'm rearranging a bunch of disks on my server at home and I find myself in the position of wanting to move a bunch of LVM logical volumes to another volume group. Is there a simple way to do this? I saw mention of a cplv command but this seems to be either old or not something that was ever available for linux.

I'm trying to mount a Windows Server 2003 share in Fedora 13. With Fedora 8 and with RHEL 5.5 this works properly, but not with Fedora 13.
The mount point I'm using is /usr/eg
The symptoms are: Nautilus (the file browser) does not display the mount in the places or tree as a mounted drive. Using the file broser I can browse under file system down to the files on the server Programs cannot find the files under /usr/eg ie the files on the server.
Here is my fstab entry:
//192.168.1.40/eg /usr/eg cifs auto,user=<user>,password=<password>,rw,uid=500,gid=500,file_mode=0774._netdev 0 0

I am having issues mounting a share on a Windows 2008 Server from all of our Redhat 4 machines. I am trying to back up files before wiping and upgrading them to 5. I will try and post as much information that I gathered after trying different things. I am a newer hire for this network and a Linux newbie.
The scenario is this:
1. Windows 2008 Active Directory.
2. Redhat Enterprise 4 machines
I have root access and I tried entering at the terminal:
" smbclient -L "servername" -U "username"
get the "password" prompt I enter my password and get:
"session setup failed: NT_STATUS_ACCOUNT_LOCKED_OUT."
I check event viewer on the 2008 box and last week was seeing:
Event ID: 4625
Keywords: Audit Failure
etc, etc
"Account for which Logon failed:
Security ID: NULL SID
Account name: anonymous
Account Domain:MYGROUP
Failure Information:
Failure Reason: Uknown user name or bad password
etc, etc
Now the last couple of days the audit failures have not shown up on the 2008 Server box even though I attempted to log in.
The end users used to just use Konquerer smb://"servername"/"share" and it worked but for some reason starting last week this no longer works. Nothing was changed that I know of, this network is in a sealed classified environment with no external access. All additions to the network are monitored and no unapproved software is installed. The lab is in a vault type environment and only a few people know the combination and alarm pass codes so no chance of somebody adding stuff without me knowing it.
I would think with the locked out message it was an issue with my user account but that works fine on the Windows side so I tried my Linux credentials with no success when trying to mount the directory.
Is there something anybody can suggest Linux or Windows side to check? No user accounts work connecting to the Windows share.
p.s. I am aware the above command is only to see the Windows shares but i get the same thing when I just try and mount using CIFS or SMBFS.

I have 2 hard drives on mu box 1st one is 500.0 MB ext4 Volume where I have my syste FC 13 and a 2nd one where I put my database files as follows 78.1 GB ext4 Volume usage = filesystem, format ext4
ih file browser, I can see an icon for a 80GB hard drive but whenever I double click I get the following

After preupgrade downloads install media and reboots to start install, I get a dirty file systems error on /dev/sda2, my / partition.I fsck'd sda1,2,3,4,5,6 (all clean) and rebooted, ran preupgrade again and got same error. No other disks are mounted other than internal SSD.wtf is going on here? ;-)More importantly how does one get around this error? Only half-solution I have found on the net for this problem is to set allowDirty=1 in upgrade.py and recreate install.img. Have no preupgraded before so don't want to take any more risks than necessary.Thanks for any workarounds....---------- Post added at 03:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:31 AM ----------Anyone have ideas here? I have inserted my handy drive. However, when I right click and select unmount I get the following message:
An application is preventing the volume "New Volume" from being unmounted
So I try from the command line:
umount /dev/sdb1
And I get the following message:
umount: /media/New Volume: device is busy.
All I have done is copied some files to my handy drive. So I am not sure what process is keeping my handy drive busy.Is there any command that I can use to see what process of anything else is using the handy drive?

Setup1: Two rack mounted servers with a common storage device serving as the home directories for users on the servers. The storage device is a gfs partition mounted on the servers as the home directory using SAS cables. These servers have RHEL 5.4 as the installed operating system.
Setup2: A standard tower server with Debian 6 as the operating system used for tape backups. This has a tape drive connected to it.
Question: How to mount the storage device of setup1 using NFS on the server in setup2.

I finally got the nerve to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04. Got everything working except, when I boot, my speaker sound is all the way down. I run alsamixer from terminal, adjust speaker volume up and I'm ok until next boot. How do I set it to boot with speaker volume at last setting or all the way up?

A colleague of mine was studying at the University of Vienna and saw an application which was based on linux whereby other pc's booted from it and if on the server they had set it to force a clean install on that PC it would download and install a windows image. Does anyone know of the app or could point me in the direction of a similar app.

If I have a HDD with 3 particions, I have 1 MBR at the begining of the HDD, and 3 VBR (volume boot record). One VBR for each partition in the begining of each partition. But what I dont understund is if first VBR in the first partition (512 bytes) are the same 512 bytes in MBR?

I've got a semi-retired hdd (with a few bad sectors my disk utility tells me) formatted in ext4 that can be mounted onto the Desktop after boot provided root password is offered first. I thought it would be straight forward to mount it at boot with something in etc/fstab like :

But this doesn't work, is there a glaring error here ?
Various threads suggest permission restrictions could be the cause but i have had no success with them

I've googled this issue ad nauseum but alas my poor PC is still quiet as a church mouse.I was prompted to upgrade to 10.04 and, despite knowing better by now (I seem to file a severe bug report following each upgrade), I chose to allow the upgrade to move forward due to a driver problem I thought might be fixed in the new version.The upgrade took over 9 hours but did complete and I rebooted afterwards. I never got my PC back, it's stuck during bootup on "mounting none on /dev failed".
Be cautious with advice. There is no menu.lst any more, this is Grub2.I have booted off of the Live CD and run the grub-install and mkconfig. I have edited grub to try different menu options by default. Each time, grub builds with 2 different kernels listed, neither of which are correct.

I've been noticing that my ubuntu 10.04 takes too long to boot lately, and now that I've upgraded to 10.10 and had the same issue, I took few minutes to investigate. from what I understand from the log files, it looks like my hard drive takes too long to mount, actually 40+ seconds to mount...
