Software :: Useful Webcam Application - Take Picture And Save In An Appropriate Place
Mar 1, 2010
I am looking for a free application for webcam that have a very good ,easy and flexible command line options. because I want to shutting down my X in a machine and use my web cam as a motion detector to detect a motion or some thing else and take picture and save them in an appropriate place or any other action that possible but in command line configuration or file configuration and does not need any graphical user interface.
Cheese Webcam Booth used to work fine but now it just closes after I open it, Facebook wont load my webcam (but other websites can, and I wanna take a picture. I'm using a Logitech Webcam. I don't know what kind because it doesn't say anywhere on the stupid thing, but it has a spinny thing (to adjust the focus I think) that says "Right Sound" on it, and it also has a microphone.
I'm able to set it up but everytime I reboot or logout it goes to the default Fedora12 picture. My pictures is in the list so have to select it everytime in system/preference/look & feel/apparence/background. I didn't find any file to edit in my home folder to fix this.
btw I'm unable to edit the menu when I right click on mainmenu icon
I have a script running at the moment via cron which takes a picture every minute from my webcam. gst-launch-0.10 v4l2src num-buffers=1 ! jpegenc quality=95 ! filesink location=/home/user/$picture.jpg However, the camera is only on for one second and takes the picture which leads to very dark images as the light sensor hasn't had a chance to work yet. However, if I load up Cheese, it brightens after about 10 seconds of the camera being on. Is there anyway of adding in a delay to the pipeline above so the camera stays on for 10 seconds before actually saving the file to a jpg?
I am trying to use streamer to set up a cron job to take a picture with my webcam once/minute. The image that it is capturing is too dark - does anyone know a way to lighten it? I am capturing the image as JPEG.
I have buy new webcam Trust WB-1400T, connected to my Fedora and got very dark picture with probably bad whitebalance, while on windows, result is much better with the same device.
I tried:
1) HW check, verified - running OK
2) checked, if HW is supported. it is by driver gspca_pac207 with 5 stars

I have an old Brooktrout ISDN fax card on BRI used mostly for receiving faxes. It works with windows fax server software which sends faxes to different e-mail boxes according to telephone number on which fax was send.
Since card is getting rather old and I don particulary like server software I wonder has anyone got any practice with linux fax servers. What I need is ISDN fax card and software which is able to save fax as a picture to file and somehow retain telephone number (filename or directory name). Sending picture by email is than trivial task.
Can i place a some cool shortcuts to different application on my desktop. How can I get these cool looking shortcuts. I also want to know that can I put some Gadgets on desktop like gadgets in Windows 7.
I have a webcam that seems to work well in fedora, but it doesn't seem to allow me to save defaults after making changes to the brightness. If I reboot the machine everything reverts to the original settings. Using v4l2ucp, I am able to increase the exposure, but this setting is lost every time I reboot. For various reasons, it is important that I am able to load a default exposure value after rebooting. My camera is using the STV06xx driver. The lsusb displays the following about this device: Bus 004 Device 002: ID 046d:08f0 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Messenger
When I hover over an open programme which is on the task bar I get a pop up, but instead of a picture of the actually programme I get a grey box like this
i had just edited a picture in digikam that was going to be my new desktop wallpaper.when i went into system/preferences/appearance to make the new change it would not show the new picture that i had just edited as a choice to change my new wallpaper to. then i tried closing the appearance box and it would not close.then i shut down and restarted and when i bring up the appearance box it does not let me click on anything within.also can't close it.seems like other applications are working normally.
I managed to damage my 11.2 installation so it starts in the GUI mode only in failsafe mode. Actually I tried before to repair the installation, using the install DVD, but the automatic repair procedure failed. More than that, since then boot loader also seams to be "repaired" so that the Windows installation doesn't appear in the boot menu, but this is another thing. For me, now, the fastest way to get a stable system is to make a new installation. The biggest problem is that I cannot save/backup the emails and accounts settings in an elegant way. I'm using Thunderbird. Of course I would also like to save other apps settings. So is there a way to save user application settings so that I can used them after a new install? I had a look to the yast backup tool but these seams to be a way to archive files, or am I wrong?
after the upgrade to maverick, gnome-session-save doesn't save applications on shutdown or logout as it did on Lucid.I've noticed the following things:
On Lucid, if I had a stopped job in a shell, the system refused to logout or shutdown, showing a confirmation window. On Maverick, the CPU goes to 100% and then the computer shuts down; on reboot, no application is saved
On Maverick, if there are NO stopped jobs in a shell, I can logout cleanly but only a few applications are saved (eg. terminal, firefox) but others aren't (eg. empathy, evolution) I've checked "Automatically remember application on exit" in "Session management" menu.

I have a problem making work a webcam. At the begining, after the instalation of 10.04 in a new laptop, the webcam did not work but with a lsusb I see that the webcam was Webcam 5986:0241 acer. I was not able to config neither use the webcam with any application. After lots of test and forums reading I could not do my webcam to work, and now when I do a lsusb my webcam does not appear.
how to find out what driver my webcam is using and where its located the webcam it self works but goes from normal to dark after a minute of use and would like to fix it
I want to use my laptop's built in webcam as remote webcam and I don't want to use FTP and post images to a www and use php script or sth, I want to make it accessed remotely as a fast stream and if there is a way I would like to use it with Windows XP - Microsfot Windows Messenger.
I have Ubuntu 9.10 dual booting with Windows7.My ext3 /home is mounted as F: in windows.I share a firefox profile between them so that when i am in Windows my firefox uses the same profile as it does when in Ubuntu. It all worked great until recently. I am unable to save files by right clicking and save as. In the config i am unable to set a directory to save to. It neer asks me where to save to. Just nothing happens. some off my book marks are all messed up as well, my rss feeds have the same post on some random website every time i log on and i have to manually refresh to get the correct feeds back. I am unable to delete the random bookmark.
my mediacenter is attached to an beamer with the optimal resolution of 1280*720 ubuntu 10.04 doesnt offer me this revolution (on my intel 915 graphis controller). this means i have to add this resolution to the possible resolutions. first i used cvt
now i can select and use the new resolution - until next reboot. after an reboot 1280x720 is again not available. even if i work with sudo - the resolution isnt there....
Config a CentOS iptables.I issued some iptables rules.the rules were effective at once. Then, I came with a "iptables-save", but the "/etc/sysconfig/iptables" file hasn't been updated, it still loads the defaults rules with CentOS after reboot.
I've tried iptables save, iptables-save and iptables save active.
"iptables save" and "iptables save active" give me an invalid argument error. "iptables-save" isn't a valid command. "iptables --help" gives me a list of valid switches, none of which have to do with saving.
