Aug 17, 2010I'm new to Ubuntu and I'm remote from the server. I'm setting up an Ubuntu server 10.04 x64. My intention is to load Oracle 11g, however I know I will need to be able to export an X display back to my desktop (Solaris) to run the Oracle installer. What do I need to load to get X working enough to export the display back to myself. I need to provide additional information. Since I'm new I may not have adequately covered what's needed.

May 6, 2011 I am trying to run matlab on a remote mac through my laptop at home, which is a linux-based. I am not able to export the display. Here are the steps I followed.
1. xhost +remotehost
2. Log into remotehost (i.e., the mac machine)
3. export DISPLAY="192.168.2.2:0.0"
4. matlab
But I get the following message,
"unable to open display 192.168.2.2:0.0"
The reason I typed in that ip address in step 3 was that is the ip listed in the "wlan0" block when I typed "ifconfig -a" on my local linux laptop.

On 192.168.10.164 (remotePC):

The Firefox window appears on my localPC. In the above case both PCs are Linux.
Can I similarly export the Linux display to a Windows PC? In the above example, localPC would be Windows and remotePC would be Linux.

Nov 2, 2010I am attempting to "export" the progress bar from wget display using sed. Basically, we have an app that starts wget to download a large file and we want to show a progress bar. Our application has a dbus interface to receive the download progress.
So we were think of a command like:
wget [] | sed [] | dbus-send[]
The problem at the moment is, how do you get the matched string out of sed and into dbus-send? I can get the progress string by:
sed -u 's/[0-9]*%/&/'
This populated '&' with the correct percentage, but I cannot seem to get this out of sed.

Apr 16, 2010I've got an EeePC, running Jaunty, and I can use the Network-Manager to connect through my ibVPN account just fine. I want to also use this ibVPN account on my desktop running Hardy. I've tried to manually transpose all the configuration info, but it keeps coming up with errors (a number of errors, including sometimes "bad username/password"). So I thought: "Hey, why am I even bothering with all this manually transposition of credentials? I can just Export the account config info from the (working) Jaunty machine and then import them straight into the Hardy machine." Should be pretty simple, huh? Woulda, coulda, shoulda. I go to the VPN tag in the Network-Manager on Jaunty, select "ibVPN" (the working VPN account) and click Export. I tell it to save the info to a file called ibVPN (pptp).conf... and I get an error saying:

Means I don't even know what needs changing. Damn fool network-manager. I've tried jiggling stuff round, but nothing seems to make a difference.

Ubuntu :: Odd Screen Display - Unable To Login (10.04 LTS)
May 5, 2010I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and at first, everything was just fine. This issue came about yesterday, as far as I know, while my screen was locked. The login screen now displays only half of the original login screen (left side) and the other half (right side) is an odd view of a black background with a white box in the center (see this mock up). Another note of interest is that the right side pans as I move the mouse around the screen, as if the right-side view were a second view port to the login screen without displaying it properly.
I am not able to log in whatsoever. An incorrect password results in the standard error message. A correct password results in a temporary black screen, as if to load to the desktop, but then redisplays the login screen as if I hadn't logged in at all. I'm not sure where to begin, as I cannot login to run any commands and the grub menu does not give options to start in safe mode--it just loads directly to the latest instance of Ubuntu.

If i am albe to get it to work i will be able to use linux for the 30 laptops we use for our presentations, which is good because windows is giving us some performance problems.
the powerpoint file in question was created in 2010 and has embedded videos in it. Openoffice and LibreOffice do not seem to be able to display the slides right, let alone the videos.
I want to hopefully get the viewer working, or i will have to just remake the powerpoint in odf

I can't configure the monitor. and the display.
I've tried with both the built in display configure and the Nvidia one. Can't choose 1600x900 on either one.
I either can't see all the display on the monitor, or it takes on some weird panning mode and looks like the display is about 2500x1500 or something.
Here's the xorg.conf file. Clearly it does not see the new monitor and the modes are wrong. These settings are for the previous monitor. How Can I fix this so that my display works properly? Thanks.

OpenSUSE Install :: Update From 11.2 To 11.4 - Unable To Get Correct Display Using Zypper Tool?
Jul 10, 2011I used the zypper dup tool to upgrade my HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop and my display is now broken into columns and partially obscured. I can barely see anything on it. When I ran zypper it stopped about half way and locked up.I then ran it again to completion. At boot, GRUB gives me my startup options as before and is clearly readable with good resolution. When I select openSuse to start it, the screen goes blank for a few seconds and then comes back with the screen problems.
The problem continues all the way into KDE. I have approximately four columns displayed but I can barely see anything. Most of the lower half of what should be displayed is obscured so I cannot load any applications. If I right click, I can make out the dialog box and select the run command. From there I reran the zypper command using the 'zypper up rpm' option and it says "nothing to do" and the "highest update version is already installed."
The display problem also exists if I use the failsafe boot option. I remember having to download nVidia driver last year to get a better resolution, but 11.2 (64 bit) worked great until the repositories stopped working and I no longer was able to load software. Now I can't use the computer to download and burn a DVD version of 11.4. Again, I do seem to be able to use the terminal, so I could presumably fix something with it if I had the right commands and I do seem to have access to the repositories.
Ubuntu :: Windows Crashed: Unable To Display Some Documents - Unrecoverable Files
Jul 22, 2010the other day my Dell laptop completely crashed, rebooted, got a DST error, tried to run a dskchk off the Windows Boot CD, failed due to "unrecoverable files". Then booted off Ubuntu to salvage my stuff, which seems to work fine, and I can even see my HD - "120 Gb Drive" or whatever it says. When I open it, I see 2 folders: windows, Epson, and 2 random files.
Here's the thing. It says 108/120 gigs are taken, which is just how I left my HD with all my stuff on it that I am trying to recover. Yet my personal and important documents (pictures, videos, documents and even music) are NOWHERE to be found and searches bring up nothing. yet it says the disk space is taken...I am at a total loss.
