Hardware :: Installing New SCSI Card And Array For First Time?

May 11, 2010

I'm installing my first new Dell SCSI controller card (PERC 6) and storage array (MD1000) into my first RHEL server. I've done this plenty of times in a Windows world, but never in Linux. I know the BIOS will pick up the SCSI card and I can go into that during the boot screen to set up how i want the array (RAID5), but once Linux comes up, will it automatically find and mount the drives, or do I have to do something?

Red Hat :: Mapping /proc/scsi/scsi Entries With Respective Device Names In /dev/ Directory

Apr 11, 2011

In my understanding, the way /proc/scsi/scsi gets populated, /proc/paritions also gets populated in the same fashion. i.e. the description for first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi can be seen in the first entry of /proc/partitions and same for rest.

So, With this assumption, in my project, I used to relate first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi with first entry of /proc/partitions to get its total size and same for all entries.

But, I observed some differences in following scenario, where

1) The first 4 entries in /proc/scsi/scsi are SAN luns attached to my system and for which the actual device names in /dev/ are sda,sdb,sdc and sdd.

2) The last 4 entries are the internal HDDs on same system. In /dev/, their respective device names are sde,sdf,sdg & sdh.

(Output attached at end of the thread)

But in /proc/partitions, the device order is different.

You can see their respective sizes in /proc/partition output as well.

So, my question is, in this particular scenario, I can't relate the first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi with first entry of /proc/partition. i.e. scsi0:00:00:00 is not /dev/sde, because it is actually /dev/sda.

It seems that my assumption is wrong in this scenario.

Is there any way or mechanism to figure out actual device name for an entry in /proc/scsi/scsi in /dev/ directory?

How can my application should relate /proc/scsi/scsi entries with their respective device names and sizes?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing Dual Boot WithXP On SCSI Disks?

Aug 31, 2010

Using 9.10 in dual-boot with XP:

Dell 600SC running an Adaptec 39160 dual channel SCSI controller which has 2 disks connected to it. The machine also has 2 IDE drives connected to it. The boot order of the disks is set to the SCSI disks as the first in boot order (after CD).

I am trying to set it to maximize performance from the SCSI config so I have XP on the first SCSI and I set up Ub 9.1 on the second SCSI in a dual-boot configuration.

In this set up the machine when rebooting goes straight to XP (on the first SCSI) and does not even see the Ub installation. The installation went fine and no complaints. On the same machine if I just had Ub on the first SCSI - machine boots fine (albeit after a long pause looking for the bootloader).

So with XP on the first disk (which I need to - to have XP) the Ub bootloader does not seem to set the right params to be able to boot.

Again this is with 9.1. Not trying 10.04 as with 10.04 I don't even get to boot even with standalone Ub (with no XP). However it installs fine but does not find bootloader in 10.4, so we will keep to the 9.1 for now. I am however open to working with 10.04 if there is a solution in dual-boot with XP in my config.

So again 9.1 installs fine with XP on 1st SCSI disk, an ub 9.1 on 2nd SCSI disk, but then bootloader does not get activated and machine goes straight to XP.

Fedora Installation :: Installing On A SDHC Card - Installer Appears To Want To Install To Both SD Card And Also USB Stick

Jul 21, 2010

I have an EeePC 4g netbook which only has a 4Gb hard drive and I thought I would like to install Fedora 13 on an 8 Gb SDHC card and use it to boot the netbook.

As neither the netbook nor I have an optical drive, I made a bootable USB memory stick using Unetbootin which boots the netbook and could be used like a live CD to install Fedora.

On booting with the live USB stick, with the blank SD card in place, and clicking on the install icon, the installation starts but then there are 2 problems; the first is that the installer appears to want to install to both the SD card and also the USB stick. There is a tick in the box beside the USB stick which I can't remove.

I decided to ignore that and put a tick in the box beside the SD card but when it got to the point where it creates partitions it said "Could not find enough free space for automatic partitioning. Please use another partitioning method"

Surely 8 GB is more than enough space for partitioning, so where am I going wrong and why does it want to install on the USB stick as well?

General :: Convert Full-disk RAID5 Array To Partition-based Array?

Dec 23, 2010

I have a RAID 5 array, md0, with three full-disk (non-partitioned) members, sdb, sdc, and sdd. My computer will hang during the AHCI BIOS if AHCI is enabled instead of IDE, if these drives are plugged in. Ubuntu Servers :: Creation Of RAID-0 Array In Disk Utility Resulting In Smaller Than Expected Array?

Sep 27, 2010

I have a NETGEAR ReadyNAS NV+ with four 1TB drives in a RAID-5 array. This is our primary file storage. This has previously been backed up to a hardware RAID-0 array directly attached to our Windows server. The capacity of this backup array is no longer sufficient. So the plan was, take a bunch of 200GB to 320GB drives (And a 750) I had kicking around, chuck them in a couple of old SCSI drive enclosures I have collecting dust, attach them via IDA/SATA-to-USB adaptors to a USB hub, attach that to the server, create a JBOD array spanning the disks, and back up the NAS to that. Performance is not an issue as this is just to be used for backup, with the idea being as near to zero cost as possible (Spend so far = NZ$100ish).

The first hurdle I struck was Windows not supporting Dynamic Disks on USB drives (Required to create a spanned volume). At first I resisted using another machine (i.e. a machine running Ubuntu) as I didn't want to dedicate a piece of hardware to backing up the NAS. I then decided it would be acceptable to do this via a VM, which is what I've done.So I have 10.04 running under VMWare Server 2.0.2 under Windows Server 2008 R2. The disks are all presented to the VM. I wasn't sure if I was going to end up creating the array under LVM or something else, but I noticed Disk Utility has an option to create an array, so I tried that. When I add two 250GB drives, the array size is 500GB. When I then add a 160GB drive, the array size drops to 480GB. Huh? If I keep adding disks (Regardless of order) the final array size comes out at 1.8 TB, as per the attached screenshot. Now with the following drives, I expected something more like:

160 + 250 + 250+ 750 + 250 +200 + 200 + 250 + 320 + 250 + 320 = 3.2TB

Am I missing something or making a false assumption somewhere?

General :: Bash: Calculating In Array And Storing Result In Array?

Dec 2, 2010

I have an array called arrayini which stores numbers. I want to take log to the base 2 of each of the numbers in that array and put it in file called result. I've used the following code to do it.

Code:

size=${#arrayini[@]}
for ((i=0;i<size;i++))
do
echo "scale = 12; l(${arrayini[$i]})/l(2)" | bc -l
done >result

It works fine but its taking pretty long to calculate since I've got about 230,000 items in the array. So I decided to store the result into an array hoping that it'd be faster. I tried the following code. arrayresult is where I try and store the result. The code doesn't work because of the second last line.

Code:

unset arrayresult
size=${#arrayini[@]}
for ((i=0;i<size;i++))
do
arrayresult[$i]="scale = 12; l(${arrayini[$i]})/l(2)" | bc -l
done >FILE2

There is a syntax error clearly.

Debian Hardware :: SD Card Not Detected Unless Inserted At Boot Time

Sep 18, 2013

My desktop is a Dell XPS 630i. It has a SD card reader on the front panel.

It used to work until about a few months ago (I guess, I don't use it that often). Now, the SD card is undetected when inserted.

If inserted before boot, then the existing partitions are available in thunar. I can remove and insert back the card in the reader without it being detected. I can mount and unmount the partitions. But if I "eject" the partition, then the card is not detected anymore even if pulled out and pushed in again.

Not much in dmesg (the drive is /dev/sde, and there are two partitions in the card, it is a raspian OS) :

Code: Select all[  542.144424] sd 6:0:0:3: [sde] No Caching mode page present
[  542.144430] sd 6:0:0:3: [sde] Assuming drive cache: write through
[  542.159299] sd 6:0:0:3: [sde] No Caching mode page present
[  542.159303] sd 6:0:0:3: [sde] Assuming drive cache: write through
[  542.161556]  sde: sde1 sde2

[Code] ....

When I click "eject" or manually remove the card, it says "capacity change from 2013265920 to 0".

I'm using Jessie, with the latest 3.11 kernel from experimental, but the issue was there with 3.10 and most probably older kernels. I tried to go back in time using older kernels (down to 2.6, I think the reader worked at that time) without succes, which may indicate it does not depend only on the kernel.

I don't have any "power saving" setting in the BIOS I could disable. And I didn't modify the BIOS, even the BIOS settings, in the last months.

I'm pretty sure it is a software issue as it worked with a knoppix 7-something.

Code: Select allecho 1 > /sys/bus/pci/rescan

command I've read about does not seem to work. It is supposed to force the detection but nothing in dmesg and no volume available in thunar.

I found a workaround yesterday. If I launch gparted (needs admin privileges), the SD card is detected. Like if it forced the detection. Sometimes, I have to specify the path explicitely to get it to appear :

Code: Select allgparted /dev/sde

Besides, I'd like to have this bug fixed, but I don't know against which package I could file a bug. Could it be some misconfiguration on my side ?

Networking :: SME+Compaq Presario - Can Only Get One Ethernet Card Working At A Time

May 25, 2010

Motherboard and bios here:

*Motherboard Specifications, A7V8X-LA (Kamet 2) Compaq Presario S6000CL Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

I am trying to get SME Server set up as a private server/gateway. Problem is no matter what I do I can only get one ethernet working at a time and only to the internet, not the local network. I tried both SME Server 7.4 and 8.0 beta 5 witht he same result. Now of course I checked the ethernet cards. The two I have now on it do work. One of them is the onboard ethernet the other one is in the second pci slot. They jsut don't work at the same time. (also I am familiar with SME and I had it configured correctly. Even if I messed up the order of the cards it is easy enough to just get up and switch the cables, reboot, etc.) I thought maybe there was a jumper setting or an over ride of some sort to let me use two ethernet cards. <I previously had all of this set up with an old HP computer (came with windows 98 originally.) But that computer decided it was time to retire to the road side.> It seems that it should just work. Any ideas on what I am missing or what I can do?

Edit:Spent another hour trying to get it to work and still nothing. It is picking up both ethernet cards just fine, I just updated sme 8 beta5 so the internet is working fine. I just can't get the local ethernet card to do anything at all, even though it is showing up as a green ok at boot. I checked the bios and I am not seeing anything there. It had an option to enable/disable LAN (which is enabled but I tried both and using to PCI ethernet cards. Didn't do anything different.) It has a Local LAN boot rom option, tried it enabled and disabled (Disabled now.) and nothing. I turned off the serial and parallel ports (doesn't make a difference either way.) I looked all over the motherboard and the only thing I can find is the jumper to reset the password. If a computer that was at least 12 years old could run SME and don't see why this one can't, it is half that age and a much better computer hardware wise.
