Ubuntu :: Netflix Won't Play Through Vbox
Sep 13, 2010
I put vbox on my wife's Dell Inspiron 6000 to play Netflix but the video won't play. After buffering it says there's an "internet connection problem". From what I've read that means the connection is too slow. Netflix works fine on my wired desktop (also Lucid+vbox) and on the same laptop booting into Windows (not VM). So I'm thinking there's a problem with vbox slowing the connection between the laptop's wireless and the VM?
I don't know if it will help with Netflix but 2D video acceleration is grayed out on vbox. Strangely, the 3D acceleration is fine and I can select it. If this is due to an unsupported video driver, can I change it?

I don't know if you can, but is there a way in which you can have netflix play the movies in ubuntu? And if you can, what do you have to do.Is there anything besides me restarting my computer, and choosing the windows 7 option to run netflix?

Using Oracle VM to run XP so I can watch Netflix. However, the VM doesn't go completely fullscreen, unfortunately. So this just doesn't cut it for watching movies.

I know how long people have been trying to make this work forever, but I feel I'm a bit close after playing with it for a while. This solution uses Wine, FirefoxPortable (so it's self contained and not relying on registered dll's a lot) and using instructions found at the following link for getting silverlight installed into the portable app: [URL]..
I think it's REALLY close to working. I can open netflix, and hit the play button, at what point it goes through a "please wait while this installs" then finishes, giving me a screen with the netflix streaming controls, and sits at a screen saying "Thanks for installing, once installation is complete please restart your browser to watch this movie." If I restart the browser, it does it again. I think it might be more of a firefox configuration, something to tell it that silverlight is there instead of trying to re-install it. It's registering as an installed plugin but silverlight test sites work albeit very slowly and with mixed results. I'm not having any more luck, but it seemed like a method with promise i haven't seen tried before. Here's a whole package with my experiment, all set [URL]...

It doesn't appear there is going to be any resolution to the Netflix streaming issue anytime soon.
Does anyone know of anything else out there besides Hulu that offers a service like that which IS Linux-compatible.
It's really nice to be able to stream a movie on your laptop sometimes. Are there any alternatives out there to Netflix streaming for us?

Just got off the phone with Netflix support. Apparently they really want everyone to CALL to request Linux support. You don't have to be a current subscriber (though in fairness you should probably at least be open to subscribing). Archaic if you ask me, but I guess that's how they gauge interest. So, if you're interested, give Netflix a ring and say that you want Netflix on Linux. It might help to mention that Amazon's recently released "Prime" video service DOES support Linux already. They have some competition now!

I just installed Boxee on my freshly built Mythbuntu machine. Being my first experience with an HTPC media center, I am impressed.
That being said, I began to link Netflix, MLB, and other accounts. I was looking for the ability to add a Netflix app, but have yet to find it. I attempted to use the Boxee browser to navigate to Netflix, which I did, but the mouse cursor would not select anything.

So I want to be able to stream netflix on ubuntu 10.04, but netflix requires M$ silverlight. I am trying to get moonlight to work but it still tells me I don't have the right software for this. I have installed moonlight 3.0, not sure if I got all the plug in for it though.

I am running 10.04 on an old computer. I can watch netflix videos, but there is no sound. I tested the speakers on another computer and they work. That leaves either the sound card, or something about 10.04. How do I debug this?

The problem started happening a few days ago. Only my linux computers are affected. Yup, that's right. My roommates running windows have zero problems.
What's the problem? Suddenly, I cannot access 2 websites: namely facebook and netflix. I just get a "waiting for facebook.com" status from my browser, and it waits there patiently until the browser finally gives up. I haven't found any other sites that give me this issue. Gmail, ....., flickr, etc all work fine.
This happens using both firefox and chrome browsers. I've tried using Ubuntu 10.10 (on my desktop) and Peppermint (distro based on ubuntu, runs on my laptop). Both machines access the internet via wifi. Both have the same problem! o_O
Both machines are up-to-date. I've rebooted many times. I've tried booting an old kernel. I haven't installed any new software lately. I've tried disabling all plugins for the browsers. I've tried power-cycling our internet modem. I've tried changing my DNS settings to use Google's Public DNS service. Nothing helps.
Actually, one small piece of information: If I put my browser in incognito mode, I can get to the "sign-in" page for both facebook and netflix. But upon putting in my credentials, I still cannot reach my custom user home page for either site.

Anybody know why there's no Linux Netflix player support? My suspicion is that this is a copy-protection (or lack thereof) issue or that, like so many others, Netflix is joined at the hip to M.S. and is preventing it.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and recently installed Virtualbox PUEL edition that I downloaded from the Virtual box website. So I installed a virtual windows XP and it works fine. However, when the virtual XP is running, my computer can't go to hibernate when I click the hibernate button. The screen just turns black for several seconds and then brings me back to the login screen. When I shut down the virtual xp, the computer can go to hibernate the normal way.Why is it that running the virtual machine prevents my pc from hibernating? Is there a setting to enable hibernation while the virtual machine is running?

I have a virtual XP as guest in VirtualBox on a computer running Hardy. I used to be able to access the internet from the virtual XP, using Internet Explorer or Google Chrome with no problem - it just used the Ubuntu host's connection, whch it seemed to see as a "NAT Adapter".
It still sees this NAT connection - if I hover the pointer over the Network icon in VBox it says "Adapter 1 (NAT): cable connected". And if I use Firefox from the host OS, it connects just fine.
Why can the virtual XP no longer access the internet?

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 (the guest) in VBox 3.2.4 which is running in Vista (in a dual core AMD Athlon). Ubuntu works okay except the screen size is one-quarter of the space available on the 22" widescreen monitor. I read that installing BoxAdditions_3.2.4_62467 can solve the problem. When I run the terminal command (using the appropriate file) sudo sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions-amd64.run I get an error message --> sh: Can't open .VBoxLinuxAdditions-amd64.run

I have Vbox 4.0.4_OSE installed on my 11.4/KDE4.7 Laptop with Win7 and WinXP VMs installed. Generally runs well, although the Win7 VM seems to lock up on occasion if I ignore it for too long. Compared to having to reboot to Win7 to do the few things still stuck on Windoze, it is a GREAT solution.
Question: I have seen several forum items related to difficulty with dual boot systems and the installation of Win7SP1, regarding SP1s checking the MBR for the Win7 boot loader. Has anyone done a SP1 update to a VM on Vbox? It is sort of unclear what SP1 might see in the VM disk container associated with the VM. Since the initial load process for a new VM is time consuming, I thought I would ask first before blowing up my otherwise working Vbox system and then having to reload from scratch.
