Networking :: Remotely Login To Remotely Display Data?

Jun 29, 2011

I'm not terribly new to Linux, but I am new to the forums, so hear me out! I am in the process of creating an electronic mapwall for our meteorology program, and have designed the computing system from scratch. I have two Linux Boxes, each with capabilities for 6 attached monitors...a total of 12 displays driven from two machines. My intention is to have one machine be the master...it has a touchpanel control. The inputs to the touchpanel will then trigger events for the both the master and the slave machine to display. Each of them has a specific IP address (DNS entry), and are not on a subnet.

Now...is there a way to remotely login to the slave machine and have it display on it's OWN monitors? The code is Java and which works on the master machine to animate directories of .gifs for each of the master's attached monitors. I will most likely have Java execute shell commands for the remote login (ssh), but I believe the answer lies somewhere in the X-configuration. Do I have the machines in an adverse configuration (creation of a subnet would be better)? Lots of questions...lots of desire...few answers!

But http://ipadd:8080 doesnt work from the windows machine. Do I need to setup something else to access the IP and the port from a Windows machine?

General :: Remotely Control A Box From Mac?

Feb 13, 2010

I set all of my family members up with Linux Mint so that their computers would stop punching themselves in the face, but I'd like to be able to control those computers when my mom calls up and wants to know how to "put her favorites in the drop box." I've got Parallels with WinXP, and Ubunutu VMs, so my OS isn't really a concern (although I'd prefer to use OS X if there was a slick GUI app). What's the best or most practical approach to getting access to these computers from across the country?

General :: Remotely Startx Over Ssh?

Apr 18, 2011

I am using some software that uses CUDA to run some stuff on the GPU.

If I am using ssh to connect to the box, or vnc even, and I try to run the program I get an error that no CUDA device is enabled. I have to go over to the machine and physically log in, and type "startx" to get it to detect the device. It can also be another use on the box using an X session, but one has to be started soemwhere on the box to get CUDA working. Is there a way to "startx" over an SSH session so that this will work and I dont have to go over and log in?

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade From 8 Remotely?

Jul 7, 2010

I need to upgrade from Fedora 8 to a current supported version. It is at a hosting company in England, I'm in North Carolina, so physical access to the box is a really big deal.I've looked at PreUpgrade, which theoretically says it can do it, but I've had one comment on another thread that it will surely break. Obviously, broken is not my goal.

The two options I see that I have are PreUpgrade command line and yum. PreUpgrade supposedly will let me skip the version by version install, but I'm wondering because of the number of versions if it would still be better. The box has /boot as part of the root file system, so boot partition size is not a problem.

Ubuntu :: Viewing A Desktop Remotely?

Jan 7, 2010

I posted about viewing desktops remotely (received no reply), as I have an "off task web-drifting" problem with some students in my classroom, due to the fact that I no longer have my old SynchronEyes program. I have Windows Vista Business/XP Pro machines (32 of them in all) and I cannot view desktops remotely, regardless of the fact that 1) the Remote Desktop Service is enabled, and 2) I know the IP numbers and the domain names. How can I view desktops remotely with the Remote Desktop Viewer tool in Ubuntu, with the fact that the IP addresses are correct and the Remote Desktop Service is enabled on all 32 machines?

Ubuntu :: Can't Access SSH Remotely But Can Locally

Oct 10, 2010

I've got an SSH server setup on my box which is running locally fine. I can connect to it through my local laptop but when I try to connect through the internet either via my IP or using the DynamicDNS I have setup both get an operation timed out message.I've got firestarter running with an inbound policy to allow connections from any host to port 22. I've also gone into my Netgear router and selected to forward any inbound connections to port 22 to the IP of the box that's got the SSH server on it.

Even with all this the connection just isn't being made. I've also tried temporarily setting the DMZ option on the router to forward all inbound connections to the IP of the Ubuntu box but still get the same Operation time out. Is there any other options that wouldn't allow remote connections via SSH? Or am I missing something hugely obvious here? Maybe it's possible to connect to SSH via a different port or something?I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 and have installed openssh-server via Synaptic. Would be great to get this working so I can use it as a tunnel from work and access the VNC, which I've been told should be done via SSH anyway.

Ubuntu :: Remotely Downloading Files Through SSH

Mar 27, 2011

How to set up a script to log on to a server through SSH, copy file from the server to the local machine, and then run a script on the downloaded file. More specifically, I've got a minecraft sever that is run on ubuntu.

I know that I can do
# ssh username@ipaddress
to log on to the server through the terminal.

After this it asks me for a password. Once I type in the password I have access to the directories on the server. How can I set up a script to log on to the server and enter password? Once I do this, how do I automate it to copy a file from that server to ~/Desktop? If I can do this, I have a script that will run from there.

I've learned that I can do
scp -r remoteuser@remotebox:/remote/directory /local/directory to copy files from a server to my local machine, but it still asks me for the server password. how do I make it so that the password is automatically entered?

Networking :: Set An Ip Address On A Computer Remotely?

Mar 20, 2011

there is a way to set an ip address on a computer remotely. Here's my issue : Have a debian computer (plug computer) on which, after upgrade, i m not able to log in back anymore. At the moment it seems i have no chanche to connect something like a monitor but i m pretty sure the computer it boots up cause wireless is on and i can see ssid and mac address of the ap.

I ve tried to assign an ip to the mac address (from my laptop) by arp and in the table it shows the link between the mac and ip, but i m unable to ping the ip after that. I was trying to think of maybe set up a dhcp server from my laptop and see if the plugcomputer gets an ip automatically, but i m not sure if it is working and at the moment i have little experience on set up a dhcp server on linux (sabayon). Do you think is it possible to manage the network card of my plug computer by eth/wlan from my laptop?

Networking :: Changing The IP Address Remotely

Apr 12, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu server. To change the IP while I'm sitting in front of the computer, I would:

1. edit /etc/network/interfaces
2. ifdown eth0
3. ifup eth0

Remotely, I can do the first two no problem, but the ifup command causes some problems since the ethernet interface is no longer functioning. Is there some kind of script that can be written for this purpose? Maybe something that will check eth0 every so often and make sure it is running and bring it up if it isn't. Or else a script run with nohup?

I do not intend that changing the IP address will be a frequent occurrence, but when it needs to be done, it must be done reliably and without the possibility that the computer will no longer be reachable for more than a couple minutes or so.

Networking :: Unable To Remotely Connect To X?

May 25, 2010

Just throwing in a quick question to see if anyone got any ideas about this.I'm unable to create a remote X session with TightVNC viewer. The local computer is a windows XP box and the remote server is running Slackware 13.

Using Putty on the XP box to connect to Xvnc through a ssh tunnel works just fine. However, when I fire up TightVNC viewer and try to connect to 127.0.0.1 as I'm used to, TightVNC viewer is unable to establish a connection to X. I'm puzzled.

This has worked when I used another XP box as local computer. I'm running all within my LAN. Can this be a firewall/iptables issue? I've obviously posted this in wrong forum category. Sorry about that. Starts this thread in server category too.
