Ubuntu :: Remotely Wake On Lan - Remotely Turn On Computer

Jan 4, 2011

Does anyone know or recommend some software or a script to remotely power on a PC from standby to on, or even better from completely off?

I guess the completely OFF to ON is much more complicated - would probably require an extra piece of hardware(?)

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Wake Up KVM Remotely

Which is a waste of cpu/ram etc. Ideally I would like to be able to wake the vm up from virt-viewer or from a bash script being ran on my desktop.

Networking :: Remotely Login To Remotely Display Data?

Jun 29, 2011

I'm not terribly new to Linux, but I am new to the forums, so hear me out! I am in the process of creating an electronic mapwall for our meteorology program, and have designed the computing system from scratch. I have two Linux Boxes, each with capabilities for 6 attached monitors...a total of 12 displays driven from two machines. My intention is to have one machine be the master...it has a touchpanel control. The inputs to the touchpanel will then trigger events for the both the master and the slave machine to display. Each of them has a specific IP address (DNS entry), and are not on a subnet.

Now...is there a way to remotely login to the slave machine and have it display on it's OWN monitors? The code is Java and which works on the master machine to animate directories of .gifs for each of the master's attached monitors. I will most likely have Java execute shell commands for the remote login (ssh), but I believe the answer lies somewhere in the X-configuration. Do I have the machines in an adverse configuration (creation of a subnet would be better)? Lots of questions...lots of desire...few answers!

Ubuntu :: Way To Remotely Disconnect OTHER Computer's Pidgin / While Using Current Computer?

Aug 29, 2010

i have 2 computers.both have pidgin messenger with the same accounts (yahoo, msn, aim, facebook...). both can connect at the same time. both connect at startup.both work well.some of the chat protocols disconnect upon sensing multiple connections (as in, when one account signs in from two places).good.others don't.bad.

is there a way to remotely disconnect the OTHER computer's pidgin while using the current computer? while both instances of pidgin are running, the OTHER computer will see all incoming messages on pidgin. anyone at that computer will see a one-sided conversation.simple solution would be to stop them from connecting at startup. that still doesn't solves the problem of "what if i forgot to turn one off" or "what if someone runs pidgin on the other computer."

Networking :: Set An Ip Address On A Computer Remotely?

Mar 20, 2011

there is a way to set an ip address on a computer remotely. Here's my issue : Have a debian computer (plug computer) on which, after upgrade, i m not able to log in back anymore. At the moment it seems i have no chanche to connect something like a monitor but i m pretty sure the computer it boots up cause wireless is on and i can see ssid and mac address of the ap.

I ve tried to assign an ip to the mac address (from my laptop) by arp and in the table it shows the link between the mac and ip, but i m unable to ping the ip after that. I was trying to think of maybe set up a dhcp server from my laptop and see if the plugcomputer gets an ip automatically, but i m not sure if it is working and at the moment i have little experience on set up a dhcp server on linux (sabayon). Do you think is it possible to manage the network card of my plug computer by eth/wlan from my laptop?

I'd like to have my Linux box (a QNAP TS-210 NAS) send the order to go to sleep (or hibernation) to my main Windows 7 computer. As the NAS is running Linux, I can't use psshutdown from SysInternals' PsTools. Is there any Linux equivalent? Or some "magic packet" that can order the Win7 computer to sleep.I know I could install a SSH daemon and trigger a shutdown command from the Linux box using ssh, but ideally I do not want to install anything on the Win7 computer. I can install Linux software on the NAS, no problem about this. PHP, python and perl are also available on it.

Ubuntu :: Viewing A Desktop Remotely?

Jan 7, 2010

I posted about viewing desktops remotely (received no reply), as I have an "off task web-drifting" problem with some students in my classroom, due to the fact that I no longer have my old SynchronEyes program. I have Windows Vista Business/XP Pro machines (32 of them in all) and I cannot view desktops remotely, regardless of the fact that 1) the Remote Desktop Service is enabled, and 2) I know the IP numbers and the domain names. How can I view desktops remotely with the Remote Desktop Viewer tool in Ubuntu, with the fact that the IP addresses are correct and the Remote Desktop Service is enabled on all 32 machines?

Ubuntu :: Can't Access SSH Remotely But Can Locally

Oct 10, 2010

I've got an SSH server setup on my box which is running locally fine. I can connect to it through my local laptop but when I try to connect through the internet either via my IP or using the DynamicDNS I have setup both get an operation timed out message.I've got firestarter running with an inbound policy to allow connections from any host to port 22. I've also gone into my Netgear router and selected to forward any inbound connections to port 22 to the IP of the box that's got the SSH server on it.

Even with all this the connection just isn't being made. I've also tried temporarily setting the DMZ option on the router to forward all inbound connections to the IP of the Ubuntu box but still get the same Operation time out. Is there any other options that wouldn't allow remote connections via SSH? Or am I missing something hugely obvious here? Maybe it's possible to connect to SSH via a different port or something?I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 and have installed openssh-server via Synaptic. Would be great to get this working so I can use it as a tunnel from work and access the VNC, which I've been told should be done via SSH anyway.

Ubuntu :: Remotely Downloading Files Through SSH

Mar 27, 2011

How to set up a script to log on to a server through SSH, copy file from the server to the local machine, and then run a script on the downloaded file. More specifically, I've got a minecraft sever that is run on ubuntu.

I know that I can do
# ssh username@ipaddress
to log on to the server through the terminal.

After this it asks me for a password. Once I type in the password I have access to the directories on the server. How can I set up a script to log on to the server and enter password? Once I do this, how do I automate it to copy a file from that server to ~/Desktop? If I can do this, I have a script that will run from there.

I've learned that I can do
scp -r remoteuser@remotebox:/remote/directory /local/directory to copy files from a server to my local machine, but it still asks me for the server password. how do I make it so that the password is automatically entered?

Ubuntu :: Remotely Trigger Gnome Apps Over SSH?

Jan 11, 2010

I have a keyboard&monitor damaged laptop which I've converted into a media server/HTPC with a large external monitor. I've installed Ubuntu 9.10, and attached an external 1TB HDD with my video collection. As a media player it works perfectly fine. I can connect to it through my home network, both with VNC and with SSH. I can use VNC on my current laptop to access the player's desktop and play video files. However, this is awkward as the screen resolution of the playback monitor is 1920x1080 - much bigger than the laptop's screen - which means I either end up scrolling the viewpoint around, or scaling the virtual screen down to make reading text very difficult.

What I'd like to be able to do is to trigger Gnome applications - specifically the Totem video player - via a SSH session, on the current Gnome desktop. The idea is that I'd like to be able to browse the directories which house my video collection in SSH, launch the player in the session, and have it appear on the monitor. Ultimately, I'd like to be able to invoke this from a PHP script - thus allowing me to create a (simple) web application on a LAMP installation which would allow me to browse & play my video collection. Currently, when I try and invoke totem, it seems to want to connect the invocation of the software to the SSH session, which - of course - it can't do. Where I might start in trying to set this up?

Ubuntu :: Checking To See If A Directory Exists Remotely?

Jan 14, 2010

I'm working on my first bash script. My script will do several things but right now I'm just trying to get the basic part of it down and working.I have a section that looks like this

Quote:

#/!bin/bash
SERVER=$1
if [ ! -d `ssh ${1} /somedir`];then
echo "Bad"

[code]...

The problem is that if you take that right now and run it, it will return back good in that it does exist. What I need it to do is pass back that it's bad because it doesn't exist (that is unless you actually do have that directory in your root).
