Fedora Installation :: Upgrade From 8 Remotely?

Jul 7, 2010

I need to upgrade from Fedora 8 to a current supported version. It is at a hosting company in England, I'm in North Carolina, so physical access to the box is a really big deal.I've looked at PreUpgrade, which theoretically says it can do it, but I've had one comment on another thread that it will surely break. Obviously, broken is not my goal.

The two options I see that I have are PreUpgrade command line and yum. PreUpgrade supposedly will let me skip the version by version install, but I'm wondering because of the number of versions if it would still be better. The box has /boot as part of the root file system, so boot partition size is not a problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Remotely Connect After Upgrade To 10.10?

Sep 24, 2010

I have been using TightVNC (on XP) to remotely connect to my Ubuntu machine at home while in the office. This just worked. After upgrading to 10.10, I no longer can connect. Errormessage: Failed to connect to server (my ip) Looked at remote desktop settings, but these are not changed. Port forwarding is working and I use an internal fixed ip, so I can't imagine this being a problem (I doublechecked it anyway!). Anyone seen similar behavior> And, more interestingly, anyone know of a way to fix this?

Fedora Installation :: How To Manage Server Remotely

Sep 22, 2009

I try to use fedora 11 as my home server. The server should be remotely managed by VNC. A normal VNC-setup does not allow to log into the login screen, but that is what I need !!
Notice that I would like to maintain the sever using the normal gnome gui. I have been investigating lots of options to get VNC running this way, have been searching all over, but did not find any working solution. All solutions I found where based on XVNC which is not available for fedora 11 as far as I know.

Networking :: Remotely Login To Remotely Display Data?

Jun 29, 2011

I'm not terribly new to Linux, but I am new to the forums, so hear me out! I am in the process of creating an electronic mapwall for our meteorology program, and have designed the computing system from scratch. I have two Linux Boxes, each with capabilities for 6 attached monitors...a total of 12 displays driven from two machines. My intention is to have one machine be the master...it has a touchpanel control. The inputs to the touchpanel will then trigger events for the both the master and the slave machine to display. Each of them has a specific IP address (DNS entry), and are not on a subnet.

Now...is there a way to remotely login to the slave machine and have it display on it's OWN monitors? The code is Java and which works on the master machine to animate directories of .gifs for each of the master's attached monitors. I will most likely have Java execute shell commands for the remote login (ssh), but I believe the answer lies somewhere in the X-configuration. Do I have the machines in an adverse configuration (creation of a subnet would be better)? Lots of questions...lots of desire...few answers!

Ubuntu Installation :: Trying To Remotely Connect To Home Server

Sep 20, 2010

I am new to Ubuntu and have been trying to make a remote connection to my home server. I think I almost there. Here's what I have done:

1) Installed Ubuntu Server 10.0 on a Pentium 2 with 256K
2) Installed SSH, MySQL, desktop GUI and enabled remote access
3) Port forwarded my Lynksys to 5900:22 and 80
4) installed Putty and TightVNC Viewer
5) Obtained a DynDDS account

My interanl IP Addy = 192.168.x.yyy
My External IP Addy = 76.xxx.y.zzz

When I run Putty, the connection times out (which I am guessing that my server may not be setup correctly). Since I am configuring all this at home, I am unable to simulate a true remote access unless I go to an outside location. Is there a way to test my connection from outside my network rather than waiting to login remotely from a place other than my home?

Fedora :: How To Remotely Edit Root Files

Dec 31, 2009

I have rented a remote dedicated fedora 7 system. The service provider provisioned the system and does not allow direct "root" access to the system.

I currently use putty to login into "user1", switch to "root" using su -, and then edit the file.

I would like to edit the "root" file directly from my home XP system which has a SFTP connection to the remote fedora 7 system (using Aptana RadRails).

I am not sure how to do that. I had 2 ideas but I am just guessing and afraid to proceed with so little knowledge.

I considered editing /etc/group and changing the line
from
root:x:0:root
to

Fedora :: Open Graphical Applications Through SSH - Remotely

Mar 21, 2010

I have a small question regarding remote access through SSH. Here is the thing: it's been a while now that I am using SSH to remotely login servers, and more recently my own machines to transfer information from my school's workstation to my Aspire One (I effectively work in the Aspire One through a 24 inch monitor).

Anyway I was wondering if it is possible to open programs like evince through SSH. I'll describe what I am doing: the Aspire One sits next to my workstation (so I am seeing it's screen as well) and in the workstation I work in LaTex documents actually residing in the Aspire One, so what I want to do from time to time is to open graphical apps in my Aspire One from my workstation through SSH (needless to say that I open the graphical session in the AO with the same user I do SSH, and the AO runs Fedora 12).

Fedora :: Remotely Changing Default Boot OS?

Sep 13, 2010

I'll be dual booting Fedora and Windows 7. I'll be doing a lot of remote work (SSH/VNC). But, I would like to be able to switch between Fedora and Windows remotely. For instance, if my home computer was currently booted up to Fedora, and I was at work using VNC, I would like to be able to tell the computer to restart, but start up to Windows so that I could do remote on Windows (and vice-versa).Is this possible? It seems like it should be, I just don't know the best way to go about it. It seems like maybe a simple program could be written, that when run would just do a quick rewrite of the config file for the bootloader.

Fedora Installation :: 10 Upgrade / Installation Failing On Presario F700 Laptop

May 29, 2009

I've tried to upgrade my FC8 on Presario F700 series laptop to FC 10 and facing some issues. I've a live CD (i386). Initially i tried upgrading FC 8 to FC 10 and installation was stuck around 30% completion saying its unable to fins libdbi-0.8.3-1.fc9.i386.rpm. Then I tried to install FC 10 from scratch as system went to inconsistent state and faced two issues with two different setup options -

1) when i selected necessary software to be installed for office use and development, it failed after installing 20% saying libgnomeui-devel-2.24.0-2.fc10.i386.rpm

2) i then opted for for software to be installed for office use (default option) then it failed after installing around 50% saying libXrandr-1.2.3-1.fc10.i386.rpm

im trying to understand if this is a problem due to my laptop configuration (AMD Athlon 64 X2 Duel Core) or due to issue with the live CD.

Fedora Networking :: Controlling A Running X Server Remotely?

Apr 11, 2009

*Solved* I have been reading the following guide on how to use the VNC programs and a GUI to connect to my main machine from my laptop via my LAN and router:

[URL]

This allows me to control the server remotely, and run applications on the server remotely, with the GUI output being shown on my laptop, which is really neat I had Eclipse + PDT running on my server and had to stop it and start a new instance remotely from the laptop via VNC viewer, as Eclipse said the workspace I wanted to use was already in use.

So starting the VNC server on the main machine does not allow me to access the programs that are already running on the main machine under the native X server. However I can now do PHP debugging remotely using Eclipse + PDT now, and all the PHP source code is on the server machine. That's OK, but I would like to do more than that. I want to be able to connect to the native X server on my main machine, and control all the applications running on the main machine remotely from my laptop, without having to shut them down and restart them again via a VNC viewer.

Is there some sort of remote control program I can use to allow me to connect to the running X server on my main machine from my laptop, and control those applications remotely please, so the desktop layout on the main machine's screen is mirrored on the laptop screen?

I can not login remotely to client machines. I did not do anything. I can login to server remotely, but not the client. When I try to login, it accept password and nothing happens. Also, when I try to login from server to client same thing happens. We share the home directory of the server with client. Another question: there two type of nfs server nfs-user-server and nfs-kernel-server. I just use gui to set up the NFS. I don't know which one I am running. But now I am wondering how to force windows into sleep or suspend remotely from Linux.

It seems that there is no "net rpc SUSPEND" or "net rpc STANDBY" option available.
how to perform such remote operation?
