Software :: Install PCLOS On Laptop Preloaded With Xp?
Jun 10, 2010
have a fujitsu 2030 laptop. Works well, but dont like XP, have tried several of the Linux OS, and found that PCLOS was what I wanted, trouble is that it keeps freezing, have downloaded two CDs just incase one was a problem.
It appears to be loading, select install icon, last time took 10 minutes before realised system had frozen. Rebooted, then get as far as the box saying now going to install, did not. Rebooted, then worked ok, until I tried to change the time zone.
Would it be better if I kept XP (removed it before, as first time I put in PCLOS it over wrote XP),and use part of hard drive for PCLOS. Sorry if long winded, but would dearly love to have Linux, will then dispose of XP when confident not going to have same problems.

I think the installation caused the corruption of the partition table. I removed the last 3 logical partitions and gparted correctly reported the 2 remaining distros and the swap. The problem hopefully will be solved when I reinstall those distros. I have a 160 gig HD with 3 Linux,1 swap, and a Windows partition. I attempted to install PCLINUXOS unsuccessfully. When I rebooted I had the same grub. I checked gparted and it indicated all 160 gigs as unallocated. fdisk shows the partitions. and indicates one partition as empty where I attempted to install PCLOS.
No problem in accessing any of my distros, but currently I can't make any changes to my HD. I've tried parted magic and there was no solution there. I have been unable to download the Ubuntu Rescue remix. Is there a way to restore? I haven't used fdisk or cfdisk for that purpose. I am beginning to think I would need to delete all of the partitions in the extended.

Recently I tried to install openSUSE 11.2 on my HP Pavilion dv6-2125tx notebook PC which comes preloaded with Windows7. I used a DVD to install the openSUSE. Before installation, I created partitions on my hard drive for root, /home and swap by shrinking the C volume. This is the only way to create partitions on my laptop. I used NTFS filesystem during format of these partitions. During installation, the first error message that appeared was YaST error saying that it could not format the partitions though it was allowing me to set mount points and filesystems for the partitions I had created. The next problem was swap. I was not able to see the mount point and F (for format) for the swap partition. However when I continued by ignoring the warning for swap there was a partition for swap and it was the same partition I wanted to have for swap. So, I clicked the Install button. The next problem was grub error 17: cannot mount the partition. And then when I continued ignoring this too, the computer did not get any of the OSes saying that BOOTMGR (BOOT MANAGER) is missing. I had no options left but to recover it using recovery disks of my laptop.I searched a bit on the internet and found that grub error 17 happens if the corresponding partition exists but the filesystem is not recognized by the GRUB.
I concluded that it was happening bacause YaST was unable to format any of partitions with the filesystem selected. So in my next attempt, I formatted the partitions in FAT32 filesystem in Windows which I think GRUB can recognize. I did that because even if YAST would be unable to format the partition the filesystem could be recognized by GRUB.And I think that happened but I got a new error this time. The grub error 22.Now I don't know what to do. One thing that I am expecting is that my hard drive cannot be partitioned in the correct way for linux. I can only shrink the volume and create logical partitions only from one dynamic partition c. And that may be the reason YaST could not format the partitions in the correct filesystem and inturn the grub error is happening.

I have been using PCLOS for a few years now, 2007 and 2009. My PC connects via eth0 to an ADSL modem/router either with static IP or DHCP and Internet works fine.
I formatted a partition and installed PCLOS 2010.7 KDE to it. I booted the new system, expecting to (almost) never see the old one again. But I was surprised to discover that I cannot access anything on the Internet.
In the taskbar I see the network icon which correctly shows my IP and the default gateway (my router) and DNS address. When I open Firefox and fill in a location I get "waiting for [URL]" (or whatever site) forever! I couldn't even get a response from the router itself, on my own local IP segment!
As soon as I rebooted my PCLOS2009 I was online again as usual, so the hardware and network defs sure seem OK.
On the basis of a suggestion I checked my FireFox settings, and found that I had network.dns.disableIPv6 setting as 'false' in Firefox, and I changed it to 'true'. I also changed the proxy setting from 'system proxy settings' to 'no proxy'. These changes did not help, I still cannot connect.
in no particular order:
1) from a shell I can ping any site, by IP *or* by dns name.
2) my browser gets NO response from my router at 10.0.30.100 but if i type the url ftp://10.0.30.100 I *DO* get a prompt for my password from the router. (After I give the password it tells me that ftp is not available, which is true).
3) I have found *ONE* web site that worked in my browser: [URL]
4) Another app that also failed to connect to the Internet: Synaptic does not download repository listings. So I have not tried any other browser, since I cannot install anything.
5) I checked my firewall settings (in the control center) and it says that I have NO firewall limitations.

When I boot from the CD, it starts to boot and then continously repeats:
Code
Initializing gfx code...
boot:
gfxboot:
It stops on boot for about 10 seconds each time then gfxboot for not even a second before the cycle continues. I have tried more than one CD, so I don't think that is the issue. It even did the exact same thing when I tried it on PCLOS 2010.10. Both versions I tried were KDE. trying to figure out how to get past this.

I am installing Ubuntu Server 10.10 on and old Dell Laptop. The network connection is an Xircom PCMCIA card.During install, the computer sees and interacts via the network just fine. For example, I can ping the gateway. Also, the command "lspcmcia" works and show the Xircom card. When I reboot, however, there is no network access, and the "lspcmcia" command is not there. When I try "lspcmcia" the OS helpfully tells me that I can "apt-get" pcmciautils, but, without network access, that fails.I tried adding the install cdrom to apt using "apt-cdrom" and then tried to "apt-get" pcmciautils and it got further, installing some dependencies, but acted like it still was unable to locate the pcmciautils package.

I am using an HCL k38 pdc laptop and I am unable to boot KDE live cd of opensuse 11.4. The system boots to a graphical screen where a progress bar is shown. the progress bar proceeds to about 90% and then my system hangs. ALl I can see on my screen is that graphical image with suse logo and progress bar. Though my mouse works and I can move it all around the desktop but if I try pressing any key (CAPS/NUM LOCK/SCROLL LOCK) i dont see any LED notification for that. this concludes that the system is hanged.
Key board has no issue as I can use it in Windows.
I tried to boot the lice cd in text mode and it worked very fine from there I installed the system on to my HDD in dual boot mode with windows XP. But after installation when I boot opensuse from HDD it stucks at the same position.
I think this issue is with Nvidea graphics card as when the system boots I see an error message that says that the RAM has an address conflict with VGA ROM.
How can I use opensuse. I have even tried ubuntu 10.10 but it also hangs while booting or after booting. So far I have been able to manage only Sabayon Linux working on this machine however the ubuntu 9.10 was working on this system and it also started behaving similarly after I upgraded it to ubuntu 10.04.

I downloaded the 6.06 version of xubuntu because i have a laptop that doesnt support high graphics mode, and i wasnt able to figure out how to get it to run in low graphics mode. i figured that i would get a version from a while back, and then update it up to the current version. now, to the problem. I was able to upgrade 6.10, but now it says Ubuntu version 8.04 available, so i tried to update it. it gets most of the way through the part where it says calculating or something like that, and then it says: "Can't install 'xubuntu-desktop' It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a bug." with an option that says close at the bottom. when i click close another window pops up that says: Could not calculate the upgrade A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport. Then the window just closes... anything that i could do to get rid of this problem? EDIT: Is there any way to update directly from an .iso file on the desktop?

For starters, I have a Dell E1505/6400.I had Win XP but it crashed my hard drive, so I installed Ubuntu. After that install, I decided I wanted to change to OpenSuse, so I downloaded the 4.6 Gig .iso file. Downloaded fine, and I burned in ImgBurn...no problems with it. So I popped the DVD into my laptop, hit F12 so I could boot from DVD drive, but the DVD isn't recognized. It goes straight into Ubuntu, and when Ubuntu starts up, it shows up as a blank DVD+R. (That was the 2nd time I burned it, the 1st DVD I burned had the same results.)

how to install ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop but im a little caught up between using the wubi or full install heres my dilemma.I like the wubi but it doesn't support hibernation and from doing some reading it is not as stable and has some loss in performance.
The main issue I have with doing the full install is I'm a little concerned that making new partitions may screw up the recovery partition which I find really useful which lets me easily reformat my laptop without having to deal with all the drivers. So my real question here is twofold. Is there a way to still hibernate in wubi? And is the full install that much more stable and faster?Second should the recovery partition be ok if i later decide to start fresh again in the future?

I am willing to install fedora 15 in a 32 bit laptop. My laptop has Getforce 9300M nvidia graphics card. I would like to know if there is any automatic way to install the graphics driver with fedora 15. If yes please provide me the information.
Why i am interested to know is that previously when i was using a earlier version of fedora11 i guess, people in the forum suggested me to download the driver from the nvidia site and install it. It was really painful to install the driver in that way.

I recently bought my self a Acer aspire 5552G, and now I'm trying to get the latest Ubuntu on it. I put the ubuntu on a USB drive and inserted it to my laptop. I changed boot orders so that all USB devices would come first. Now if I changed only one USB device to boot first (the one where my USB was inserter, as it indicated it had SanDisc in it) It didn't do anything, it still booted up the Linpus linux ditro wich was installed on the laptop when I got it. It has no GUI and I can't do anything with it.
If I changed all USB devices to the top list of booting, the laptop started and then a text comes on the screen :
SYSLINUX 4.03 2010-10-22 EDD Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al.
And now it just stays like that and no matter what I press, nothing happens.

A few days back, I burned a CD with Ubuntu 10.10 (maverick?). Have since installed 10.10 on an old desktop (pentium ii, 1.15 ghz) and it boots up ok - (apart from a 'freeze' issue which varies from 10 mins to 2 1/2 hours) Anyway, my immediate problem is I'm using the SAME CD to install 10.10 on a AMD Athlon laptop (which previously ran Windows XP). The installation process starts with the usual: TRY/INSTALL screen - I select INSTALL. The whole process runs for about 40 mins, using the entire 60gb drive (I've got rid of XP). The final few messages are: 'installing system', 'copying installation logs' 'installation complete' - 'restart now'. So, the CD is ejected after which I get a string of '2380 nnnnnn i/o error device sector 533280'messages. Then, 'will now restart' At the restart, up comes the UBUNTU screen and the intro clip...and there it stays. My question, does anybody know what could be happening - if anything?? Remembering that this CD was installed on the desktop.
