I have installed RHEL5 in My Pc. Is it possible to create Recovery Disc's for my Loaded OS? If Yes, are there any tools to create Recovery Discs or any other methods?

I am trying to recover my compaq vista after a BSOD error. I have Ubuntu running and can see both my main hard drive and the factory image. I am trying to create a recovery disc that will allow me to boot back into windows.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and am trying to use it to recover data from a failed External HDD (NTFS).
The drive failed with an accompanying smell of electric burning and subsequently was not recognised by Windows. It would recognice the enclosure, but told me that the drive had to be reformatted.
I removed the drive from the external enclosure and hooked it up to my PC with a power cable and USB to SATA connector. I can mount the drive in Ubuntu (eventually) and I've learned enough about BASH to navigate through the files on the drive.
Those that I can access I am able to copy across to my internal drive (VERY slowly, but it does do it) but a lot of the directories show up with an Input/output Error when I run the ls -l command.
Is there any way for me to be able to access these files or to recover them? Should I be trying a different technique rather than just attempting to access and copy the files?
So I have been messing around with the new 10.04 and I managed to screw it up. When I started to log off, I closed the lid to my laptop so it would hibernate, but instead the screen went black and I could only see the cursor. It stayed like that for several minutes so I shut it down manually. When I booted it up again, it froze on the splash/loading screen and I haven't been able to boot it since. I've tried to boot in recovery mode, but I think my campus internet interferes with the downloading of the necessary files from the internet. Is there any way to boot a recovery mode from the install disc? Or am I SOL?

The computer will not allow me to do an internal recovery so I ordered a recovery download on line and burned to a disc. when I put the disc in the graphics came up and in started in Live-mode but then the error mess came: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libpci.so.3: cannot read file data: input/output error. The site said it was an ISO file but then it had a program it had me run to change it and burn the disc.

I'm sorry for this stupid question, but I have nowhere found it.I need to access to my USB disc from text mode (In Fedora LiveCD I see it and i can access /media/New Volume). In F12 runlevel 3 in mc I see it in /dev/disc/by-label as @Newx20Volume. But I don't know what is the correct path.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am on Ubuntu 9.04. I have a Vista disc which I have slipstreamed some drivers onto. (Basically, you copy them into the "upgrades" or "updates" folder)
I have copied all the files from the Vista disc onto my local Ubuntu drive. I have copied in the new files.
Then, I used Brasero to burn from the local Ubuntu drive to a blank DVD.
So, I checked, and all the files are there.
But when I start up the computer, it does not boot. It boots straight into GRUB, then Ubuntu. Wheras, when I stick in the original Vista disc, it does boot.
How do I get the new disc to boot? It has, surely, exactly the same files as the original....
I have downloaded imgburn, then downloaded ubundo from hippo site. somehow sonic was also downloaded. I did not know what choice to make when it came time to burn a cd....now I can't get back to those choices....I am trying to make a bootable cd to install in a sonic laptop without an operating system. If by downloading ubuntu on my c/drive have I changed my os in any way...I have a hp compaq desktop computer using windows os..I am on a network with my husband

But all the latest releases after FC7 is not detecting my Hard disk. Is there any solution to solve this problem? Actually I'm searching for a solution when the FC8 released. Now I have all the later releases from FC8 to FC11 DVD except FC9. But none is working .
View 1 Replies View RelatedIf I use Ubuntu's (10.4) Startup Disc Creator app to create Debian (Lenny) start up USB I just get (when using it on a separate machine) a black screen with the text "boot:" If I press Enter I get a pale blue screen but nothing else, some text if I press the TAB key, but it will do nothing. Is this because I use Ubuntu for a Debian OS or is there some other problem? I've noticed that the disc creator in Ubuntu only really likes Ubuntu related OSs. But since it recognised it when I created it I would have thought it'd work!

I want to make a recovery disk with Clonezilla so if something goes wrong with the upgrade I can go right back to where I am now. I have a 16 Gig thumb drive that I want to boot Clonezilla from. This part is where I am stuck is step 4.To make your USB flash drive bootable, first change the working dir, e.g. "cd /media/usb/utils/linux", then run "bash makeboot.sh /dev/sdb1" (replace /dev/sdb1 as your USB flash drive device name), and follow the prompts to finish that. My USB drive is named M-S325 so if I enter cd/ media/M-S325/utils/linux in terminal I get the error no such file or directory. I know it is something stupid simple I am doing wrong, but I am stuck. What do I need to do to make my UBD drive bootable with Clonezilla ?
Not sure if anyone uses floppy drives anymore much. I know that most machines don't come with them anymore unless you ask for one.One of my machines [Machine # 2] has a floppy and I have never had the occaision to use it under linux [opensuse 11.2 currently]. Until now that is! I have about 30 floppies that I need to transfer the data from. I am able to mount the floppy drive and take data off the currently inserted floppy, but if I want to insert another floppy and remove the data from it, I must unmount and remount the floppy everytime. There is an entry in fstab:
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user 0 0
and a mount point in media [/media/floppy] Is there something else I need to have in the fstab line for the floppy so that it will read automatically everytime I insert a disk?

Recently I tried to install openSUSE 11.2 on my HP Pavilion dv6-2125tx notebook PC which comes preloaded with Windows7. I used a DVD to install the openSUSE. Before installation, I created partitions on my hard drive for root, /home and swap by shrinking the C volume. This is the only way to create partitions on my laptop. I used NTFS filesystem during format of these partitions. During installation, the first error message that appeared was YaST error saying that it could not format the partitions though it was allowing me to set mount points and filesystems for the partitions I had created. The next problem was swap. I was not able to see the mount point and F (for format) for the swap partition. However when I continued by ignoring the warning for swap there was a partition for swap and it was the same partition I wanted to have for swap. So, I clicked the Install button. The next problem was grub error 17: cannot mount the partition. And then when I continued ignoring this too, the computer did not get any of the OSes saying that BOOTMGR (BOOT MANAGER) is missing. I had no options left but to recover it using recovery disks of my laptop.I searched a bit on the internet and found that grub error 17 happens if the corresponding partition exists but the filesystem is not recognized by the GRUB.
I concluded that it was happening bacause YaST was unable to format any of partitions with the filesystem selected. So in my next attempt, I formatted the partitions in FAT32 filesystem in Windows which I think GRUB can recognize. I did that because even if YAST would be unable to format the partition the filesystem could be recognized by GRUB.And I think that happened but I got a new error this time.The grub error 22.Now I don't know what to do. One thing that I am expecting is that my hard drive cannot be partitioned in the correct way for linux. I can only shrink the volume and create logical partitions only from one dynamic partition c. And that may be the reason YaST could not format the partitions in the correct filesystem and inturn the grub error is happening.
have a fujitsu 2030 laptop. Works well, but dont like XP, have tried several of the Linux OS, and found that PCLOS was what I wanted, trouble is that it keeps freezing, have downloaded two CDs just incase one was a problem.
It appears to be loading, select install icon, last time took 10 minutes before realised system had frozen. Rebooted, then get as far as the box saying now going to install, did not. Rebooted, then worked ok, until I tried to change the time zone.
Would it be better if I kept XP (removed it before, as first time I put in PCLOS it over wrote XP),and use part of hard drive for PCLOS. Sorry if long winded,but would dearly love to have Linux, will then dispose of XP when confident not going to have same problems.
I am using Suse 11.4, with the Gnome desktop. I have downloaded the VLC player, but cannot work out how to make it play CDs in the CD drive. Right clicking on the Audio Disc icon that appears on the desktop whenever I load a disc doesn't give me an option to Play using VLC. Is there a way to make VLC the default player for CDs?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just installed 11.3 x64. The installation went fine and worked for the first few hours. I ran the online update tool, and now it cannot find grub unless the installation disc is inserted and I select the "boot from hard disc" option.
I have read about the problem of the root partition being back, but not sure that's it.

sda3 - /home
There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?
this blew my mind today, because i've been using ubuntu for 2 and half years. Brasero 2.28.2 in Karmic does not have an option enable multisessions when burning disc or import a disc which has a multisession.
Seriously, wtf is going on? This is supposed to be Ubuntu's default CD authoring software.
I'm trying to install files and everytime I manage to install from the first disc I succeed. When I get the the second disc I just keep clicking the "OK" button instead of "Cancel" and it keeps neglecting it.

I can now use brasero to burn data discs that have wave files for the songs, but when I try to make a audio disc I get this: "Track 1.wav" could not be handled by Gstreamer. I use synaptic and installed some more libs, but to no avail. Should I just install everything in Synaptic for Gstreamer?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got a, as it seems to me, strange problem.I've inadvertently deleted my user from the group admin so I'm in the same situation of a lot of other users (read a lot of messages about it).My problem is that when restarted in recovery mode there is no way I can choose the 'drop to the root shell' or similar in the menu.The menu appears for a second and then I've got an empty screen. If I press a key I've been requested for a username and password that of course is not what I need.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Fedora 14 on an old computer which was already a dual boot Windows XP/Ubuntu machine. As there weren't many problems I felt encouraged to install it on a newer dual boot (Windows 7/Ubuntu 10.10) machine. Apart from a lot of bother with the wiFi card, all appeared to be well. However, I decided to boot into Ubuntu to make sure that it worked as before and was disagreeably surprised to get a message saying that Ubuntu only had 12.5 Mb disc space left when previously it was installed on an 80 Gb hard drive.
I have had a look at the drive, using gparted and found that there are two ext4 file systems, one on /dev/sdb1 and one on /dev/sdb3 which have used 2.93 Gb and 500 mb respectively. /dev/sdb4 has an exclamation mark (!) beside it and is lvm2 and occupies 68.15 Gb and appears to be unused.
Would it be possible to shrink this lvm2 file system and expand the one that contains Ubuntu. If so, how can I identify where Ubuntu is located? there is also /dev/sdb2 which is an extended partition of 2.93 Gb as well as /dev/sdb5 which is a Linux swap of 2.93 Gb
I am new to Linux and so am trying different distros. I have ubuntu which runs ok and installed fedora 9 from a disc on Linux Format magazine which runs ok. However I have tried to upgrade to Fedora 10 from a disc but the pc fails to find the disc. It is the same drive I used approx 6 weeks ago to install Fedora 9 so I am at a loss.
