Fedora :: Install Updates From Another Laptop?
Jul 15, 2010
I have two laptops at home and they are both running fedora 13. Now the problem that i am facing is that the internet over here is a bit expensive and downloading the same updates for both laptops becomes bandwith intensive. Can i update one laptop and update the other laptop from the first one? Do i have to install some server that would act as a repo?

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

I have recently decided to rebuild my fedora install and have had several problems installing the updates to the system. I am receiving the following error:
libcdio.so.12 is needed by package gstreamer-plugins-ugly-0.10.14-1.fc13.i686 (rpmfusion-free-rawhide)
libcdio.so.12(CDIO_12) is needed by package gstreamer-plugins-ugly-0.10.14-1.fc13.i686 (rpmfusion-free-rawhide)

I am more familiar with using sources.list in debian style distros but I am unsure how to proceed with /etc/yum/repos.d. I am currently attempting to either install them from the CLI or to download the binaries, but I do not think that will fix the problem in my repository lists.

i just finished a fresh install of F14 and ran yum update, but it comes back with no updates? In the past, i've always had tons of updates after an install. Did the updates happen during installation so that I have a fully updated version?

I just install Fedora 15 directly to an internal drive. I've installed a few programs using Autoplus, but when I try to run a software update, I get the following error when I try to install the updates:
'could not add package update for fedora-release-rawhide-15-3(noarch)updates: fedora-release-rawhide-15-3.noarch'

I had sound before but after one of the latest updates the sound quit working. I read other threads and they suggested to type. Code: alsamixer on terminal. I did that and unmute everything and pumped each setting to the highest possible. When I boot the laptop again everything is muted, How can I save settings or what other solutions are there for this problem.

I'm having a problem downloading and installing any updates. It compiles a list of updates, then tells me I need to install further updates and generates a list of those. Then it provides me with an error message. Info on which is in the code quote below. I'm very new to Linux, so I can't say I know how to go about sorting this issue. It's a PC with the following processor
Intel Pentium (R) Dual CPU E2180 @ 2.00Ghz
Code:
Error Type: <class 'yum.Errors.RepoError'>
Error Value: Error getting repository data for installed, repository not found
File : /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/yum/yumBackend.py, line 3125, in <module>

I am running Fedora 12 on a system with Intel Core2 Duo CPU, Linux Kernel 2.6.32.14-127.fc12.x86_64, and Gnome 2.28.2. I have two questions about Software Update:
1. Software Update tells me there are two updates available:
openssl-1.0.0a-1.fc12(i686) and
openssl-1.0.0a-1.fc12(x86-64)
If I try to download and install openssl-1.0.0a-1.fc12(i686), I get the following errors:
Test Transaction Errors: file /usr/share/man/man1/asn1parse.1ssl.gz from install of openssl-1.0.0a-1.fc12.i686 conflicts with file from package openssl-1.0.0-4.fc12.x86_64
file /usr/share/man/man1/ca.1ssl.gz from install of openssl-1.0.0a-1.fc12.i686 conflicts with file from package openssl-
[code]....
I tried the --skip-broken option, resulting in: Packages skipped because of dependency problems:
openssl-1.0.0a-1.fc12.i686 from updates
openssl-1.0.0a-1.fc12.x86_64 from updates
The Software Update "Help" pages refer to a software log viewer which should be located at Applications-->System Tools-->Software Log Viewer, but it isn't there.

I installed Fedora 10 x86_64 from DVD this weekend. Once the install was completed and I booted into the new install, I ran the Software Update expecting to find and download security updates. However, to my surprise no updates were found! The install DVD was downloaded and burnt to DVD about two weeks ago. Did the installer fetch and install the F10 updates? Or did I mess up my install and/or configuration of F10? I remember when I installed F9 there were a lot of updates found right after the install.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but...well, I just installed Fedora after using Ubuntu for a while, and everything has been going good, except for installing upgrades. When I open the Update Manager, it says there is 399 updates. When I click install, after about ten seconds this pops up:Code:An internal system error has occuredA problem we were not expected has occured. Please report this bug in your distribution bugtracker wth the error description.
More details:

I have updated the gdm file to be able to log in as root in Fedora 10.Nevertheless after I had selected package updates to be installed logged in as root I still get an error message that I do not have enough privileges. The terminal installation method is a bit of a problem since I do not think it will search for dependencies and therefore it can be excessively long to figure out what is missing for a package installation. In simple cases it works OK, but in more difficult cases it is a bear.

I keep getting the updates icon popping up asking me to install software that is either already installed (Adobe Flash Player 10.1) or something that fails when I actually try to install is but I am sure it is also already installed (RPM Fusion Repository Config -free and nonfree). When I try to install the RPM Fusion packages it asked me for a Software Signature and then fails with the following message: failed to install signature: Traceback
[code]...
I have the flash player installed already and I am sure I already installed RPM Fusion. how can I resolve this and stop it from constantly asking me to install these packages?

I am willing to install fedora 15 in a 32 bit laptop. My laptop has Getforce 9300M nvidia graphics card. I would like to know if there is any automatic way to install the graphics driver with fedora 15. If yes please provide me the information.
Why i am interested to know is that previously when i was using a earlier version of fedora11 i guess, people in the forum suggested me to download the driver from the nvidia site and install it. It was really painful to install the driver in that way.

I have installed Scientific Linux 4.8 (based on RedHat Enterprise 4) on my old Samsung X10 laptop which previously had a working WinXP on it. Due to a broken screen connector I cannot use my laptop screen so I use a separate monitor connected via a serial link.
The linux install seemed to work fine except now when I boot up I eventually get a screen completely covered with flashing artefacts and I cannot see any desktop like environment. Although in the initial stages of the boot-up I do see white text on a black background zipping by.
I actually saw similar screen artefacts at the beginning of the installation when I chose the 'graphical install mode' (I re-started the install in 'text mode' to see it working).
I will be very pleased if someone can help me fix this as I have been wanting to get into linux for ages and this is my first plunge.

My laptop died while installing F12, without completing installation. Now I can not boot the computer from HD, CD, or USB. I have flashed the BIOS with the most recent ROM. I can access the BIOS setup and exhausted all my options there, which is mainly boot order. At the moment, the boot process goes to a blinking cursor and does not allow for input. The laptop in question is a lenovo Y510 that was previously running F10 with a single partition.

I just got my brand new shiny Dell XPS L502X laptop today and planned to do a dual-boot installation between Win 7 and F15. Win 7 went great but I can't even get the 64-bit Live DVD of F15 to load. The splash screen always hangs while the bar loads, but if I push ESC so I can see what's going on in the background, I get a whole lot of different error messages and the last message is "fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed." What I get is nearly identical to what I found in this post. I've already tried the usual kernel options that have always worked for me in the past, such as noapic, noacpi, and nomodeset. However, the Live DVD still won't boot. There's got to be a way to install this. Any ideas?

I am using Ubuntu right now. But I wanted to install Fedora 12 on my Dell inspiron 1545 laptop. My questions are can I use a live cd if available for fedora 12 and then install it on my laptop like we can do for ubuntu. Are all the drivers available automatically installed during installation.
The problem I faced my last installation with fedora 11 was that I could not get the wireless installed and I was unsuccessful in installing the wireless drivers using ndis wrapper or b43-legacy or something.
Can you give me a detailed link which could allow me to install the wireless drivers and also the video drivers for my laptop. The problem I am facing with my ubuntu 10.04 is that it is slow, the flash plugin is worst i guess, some of the flash videos are very slow.
Taking all of these into account can someone suggest me a good operating system. I am pretty much interested in learning linux rather than just using it like a windows operating system. I am considering, fedora 12, suse 11.2, linuxmint, centos, mandriva. Which one could be a best possible for my installation.
As I am not willing to purchase a dvd for these linux flavors can I use my flashdrive to install.

I have laptop ASUS X51RL with Intel pentium dual core inside processor. As mentioned here:I tried to install i386 FC12 on it. When the instalation was completed, there was a message to reboot. So did I, and while the BIOS was still loading, of course, removed the DVD in order not to repeat the instalation. Fedora started loading with the three varioants of the blue color bars and suddenly on the screenappeared a long message finishing with the words: "kernel panic - not syncing: fatal exception in interrupt " and that was all - the system stopped untillo there and never loaded For the last 2 days this is about my 12th attempt to get linux. Before I had tried about over 6 times with ubuntu, finishing the same way after the first reboot, 1 time knoppix and 2 times Debian. Only debian succeeded to load succesfully after its instaltion was complete, but I didnt linke it and a friend of mine strongly recommended me FC12. So what am I supposed to do??? I guarentee, my hard disc is not corruted as I read 1 hundred times on google, I had benn running windows 7 before I started trying to get linux and everything was OK... the install DVD is also OK, I tested it in the same beginning of the instalation and the test was successfull.
