View 3 RepliesI have a rtl8192e card and the drivers and everything are set up properly. I can not connect to WEP encrypted networks using network manager. I can however connect using iwconfig and dhcpcd. I uninstalled network manager and installed WICD and have the same problem. It will connect to the access point when it is configured with WPA, but not WEP which we need to use for the other computer. In the status bar of WICD it looks like it is trying to configure the encryption as WPA no matter what I select. I've looked in the config files for WICD and can't see anything that would do it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm thrilled using wicd to connect to wireless networks. But when I suspend my laptop using the special keys, I just want to disconnect from wireless without having to use any kind of GUI or curses user interface. It says in the documentation that wicd works by sending DBUS messages, so presumably it's possible to write a command that talks to the daemon directly. But I can't figure out how.Does anybody know by means of what shell command I can tell the wicd daemon to disconnect me from my wireless network?

When I rebuild the package and upgrade with the new one, the problem gone. Also I notice that the package I rebuild is different with the one on the stock tree:

The university I go to uses a WPA2 wireless network that requires a netID and password to connect too. I installed wicd but I can't seem to connect to this network, is there a way to add this functionality to wicd, and if so, how do I do that (links to a how-to or guide would be nice, I've yet to find one).
Also, I spend most of my time on campus in the command line, so I'd like to know if there is a way to use command line utilities to connect to this network (again, a guide or how-to would be nice)
I can get online through my fedora live USB just fine (w/ network manager) but I'd rather get on directly from slackware.
I'm try to setup a wireless network with my linksys wireless router and my HP laptop dual booting Vista & Suse 11.2. I have the vista networked, just fine. Where I can share files and the printer connected to my desktop. But I want to be able to use Suse in the same way, full time and to stray away from Vista. My wife and kids like easy. So I'm trying to transform them and show them something new.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThese problems just started the last couple of days but I have been using Lucid 10.04 for a month now. My wireless Signal varies in strength wildly. I sitting at home, not 20 feet from my router. I never had these problems before Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04. I am running both Network Manager and Wicd.
Errors:
1. Wicd states "Wrong Password" which is not true.
2. Dropping off-line for no reason, sometimes 3 or 4 times a minute and sometimes it works fine for hours.
3. Firefox 3.6.3 Automatically Checking "Work Offline"!?

I have the Proper Wireless Drivers. I have not changed my wireless settings, channel or WPA for 8 months now so I know thats not it.
I have installed WICD on Debian . I can now access a new a Network Manager screen, which did not exist before, but it does not display/detect any wireless networks. It is like dead. Before installing WICD I did at least have a wireless WPE encrypted network, which was detected, although it often disconnected for no known reasons. Now even that Network has gone and I can't go on line. Can anybody help here? How can I configure the WICDNetwork Manager to detect an existing network or create a new one? In the latter case, would I have to reconfigure the Router settings to setup/connect to a network in Debian? May be I have to do this, because Tor/Vidalia changes my IP address and so my Network Adapter ( Linksys) can no longer connect to the router.
Also, when trying to follow troubleshooting leads in this connection, the Terminal screen on Debian ( CMD) would often return a PERMISSIONS DENIED message.
I recently put Linux on a Thinkpad T40 I got. The wireless card works out of the box--I can see nearby networks. However, I can't connect to mine. network-manager would try (spin spin spin), fail, ask for the password, and then go back to the beginning and repeat indefinitely. This happened to me on a different computer, and on that one all I had to do was use wicd instead of network-manager. So I installed wicd, but it's not working either--it hangs at "Obtaining IP address".
I've found many, many threads with people who had the same problem, but none of their fixed worked for me.
I also tried to get wifi going manually, using this guide, but that didn't work.
I want to setup a wireless network in my lab. Main reason is that I want to be able to print from every computer, but it would also be nice if we can share files. I have three 64 bit machines, a netbook and 32 bit notebook and my internet goes via an Wifi router to which other Windoooze machines connect. I want to change to Lucy now and hope it is easier to setup the network in clean manner.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI followed [URL]..to set up my wireless network with WPA2 encryption. It works now and knemo says:Encryption: active. However, "iwconfig wlan0" says Encrytion key: off:
Code:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"blitz"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.472 GHz Access Point: 00:25:9C:DE:D3:7D
Bit Rate=0 kb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
[Code]...
So is there anything wrong with that "Encryption key: off" statement? I suspect that encryption key only applies to WEP, but not to WPA2 encryption, but I am not sure. So my question is, can I ignore that statement and assume that my encryption is fine?
Besides, where does knemo read the information about encryption from? As I mentioned, knemo detects that the encryption is active. Are there any other commands to make sure that my encryption is safe and well?
I have just done a new install of the latest opensuse 32bit and for some reason I cannot connect to the internet, when I click on mange connections the vpn tag is highlighted and all the other tabs are grayed out and I cannot select them. So I can't setup a internet connection wired or wireless. I was just using Kubuntu and did not have this problem. My card is broadcom.

View 14 Replies View RelatedThis will allow you to use iphones' data plan as a wireless access point. Currently setup instructions are only posted for windows/mac using a helper app to configure the laptop. Here are the instructions I followed to setup iphonemodem2 to work under Fedora 10: Download iPhoneModem2 from a jailbroken iphone using Cydia. Create a new wireless network on Fedora with the following settings:
a) SSID = "iPhoneModem"
b) Mode = Ad-hoc
c) IPv4 Method = Automatic (DHCP)
Connect laptop and iphone to new wireless network. Start iphonemodem app on iphone. The "traffic" does not update; the "status" says "Wrong Wifi Network"; and the signal strength says 0%. However, the network connection should be there as long as you have a data signal to your service provider.
I'm trying to set up a wireless or wired network (wireless would be better...) to share my connection with my housemate, as well as with some devices. The only guide I found regarding this (I must admit, I didn't have much time to put into research), was dating back to 2005, and although doable, seemed somewhat confusing. Getting to the point: is there a way (maybe a standalone program, or some kind of plugin) to share a connection?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am facing a problem with the management of my network card after installing Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit Desktop edition.
There are two Network Cards and one USB adapter which I'd like to drive:
- Ethernet controller Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)
- Ethernet controller Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
- Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187 Wireless Adapter
Actually I need the wireless adapter to connect to the AP, so both of the ethernet card should be disabled. Infact, when I try to access to the AP I must disable the eth0 card by using (sudo ifconfig eth0 down), otherwise the route assigns the default gw (192.168.1.1) to the eth0 device and the network is useless.
I recently installed the latest and greatest Lubuntu 64 bit, because I like lxde and I am planning a system migration. (I am really starting to not like windows 7.) I have some linux experience. I wouldn't say I am awesome at it, but I am comfortable trying anything.
Example: I have used CENTOS 5.6 to make a linux machine server as a glorified router, with asterisks, SIP, SSH server, x windows, GNome, VNC, and a user authentication system. and get this I walked somebody through setting this up over the phone. I reopened the root account (I honestly got tired of typing sudo every other command is the only reason why I opened it.) I plan on closing it after we are done.
lsusb lists the wireless adaptor

I have the driver CD. I installed ndiswrapper.I copied the files from my driver cd to my <home> Directory. Then installed the Windows XP version of the drivers using ndiswrapper -l <driver>. I then made ndiswrapper force the driver to the vendor ID of the wireless card. Using ndiswrapper -a <vendor ID> <Driver>(I did this last night and the vendor ID escapes me. I am at work now.)I finally ran depmod -a and modprobe ndiswrapperI goto the windows wireless driver application, and it shows the driver as loaded and the hardware as found.
However, it still does not list a wireless device in the network manager to where I can connect to my wireless. iwconfig does not show any wireless LAN, but it is still listed in lsusb. Also, the light that shows activity on the wireless device does not light up or blink at all. I have about 6 usb ports on my desktop and have tried everyone. The wireless card also works in Windows 7 64-bit On a strange side note. I do have internet access through LAN, (My laptop is atm a glorified wireless card .)
I tried to install wicd so I can connect to my wireless internet, but it gives me the following output:

I have checked that the pasword is correct. I had network-manager installed but it has been uninstalled. I am trying to connect to a WPA2PSK router. I might be a firmware problem, since I get a 'message' on the start screen that there are some problems with my firmware, but I can't figure out how to check if it is broken, or how to configure it so it is correct.
I have the qualcomm atheros ar9485 wireless card. As far as I can tell, the driver for that is either ath3k or ath9k, both are installed. The message I get when I start the computer is: usb 1-1.1: firmware: failed to load ar3k/AthrBT_0x01020200.dfu (-2).
I recently purchased a laptop from zareason. Seems great, only I've been struggling with getting the wireless to work. I feel like I'm awfully close.
Note: I'm running Lenny.
I downloaded what I thought was the driver for the card. The card info is:
Intel
Model 533AN_MMW
Intel WiFi Link 5300
MAC 00216A72EE22

I've successfully install wicd, but it doesn't detect any wireless network. Other computers seem to register the wireless network in my apartment.
I recently installed wicd on a notebook with Squeeze. I can connect to the wireless network at my place. However I cannot connect at my friend's place. It timed out with the message: "Connection failed. Cannot obtain ip address."
It is a Thomson router/modem and the key is a 10 digit 64bit Hex. I did not see 64bit Hex option in wicd. So, I tried all 3 WEP options and none of them worked. We can connect to the same network with another computer with Squeeze and NM and also with Windows. This is the first time I am using wicd.
Newish to linux, been using Ubuntu for about a year, moved onto Sabayon 4.2 now. I also have another laptop with Kubuntu that is using Network Manager, it has no problem connecting to my wireless, one wireless uses WEP and one uses WPA 2. When my main laptop used Ubuntu it was using Network Manager, that connected with no problem. However Sabayon seems to have a problem. Initially I thought it was the DVD that I used to install it in, but after re-burning it and installing from fresh the problem still remains. What happens is that NM when connecting to a wireless prompts for a passkey, I enter it in and it fails right away.
This happens for WEP and WPA. If the network is unsecure then it connects with no problem. So I emerged WICD 1.6 to see if that would work, it hangs on 'Obtaining IP Address'. If I put static IP then it connects, but this cant be an option as at my University campus I cant set a static IP. I have tried to find the log file for NM, but cannot locate it. I understand that it should be located in /var/log/daemon.log, but daemon.log does not exist on my system. I checked every NM directory and could not find any log files. I have tried changing the settings in WICD to no effect.
My area does not have broadband, but I am able to get 3G on my cell phone. So, I've been tethering it to my laptop when needed, but what I'd like to do is set up my Slackware 13.0 box (which is configured to run as firewall/router/dhcp server so that I can just turn on my phone's wireless router program, and then share it out over the whole network in my house. I'm using a Gigabyte b/g wireless card, which has the RT61 chipset in it. I have NO problems at all getting the wireless card to work with just setting up rc.inet1.conf. The only problem here is when I need to take my cell phone with me, I will not be able to simply turn it back into a WAP, and have my Slackware box auto reconnect to it.
This is why I started looking into using WICD. I do NOT run X, so that's why WICD fits the bill, since it has a cli version. First I tried installing the version that came on the CD. No dice there. I removed that package, and tried the 1.7 package that's on the mirrors under current. I used slackpkg to install it. WICD will run, see wlan0, sees my WAP and a few others, but it fails to connect. It attempts to up the interface, and use dhcp to get an ip, but it fails everytime. My phone's WAP program only does WEP, but I can't get WICD to get an IP with our without WEP enabled. I made sure that my rc.inet1.conf file does not reference any interfaces.
I installed Wicd in my F13 but I got problems when starting it When I try to start it I got error message:
Could not connect to wicd's D-Bus interface - Check the wicd log for error messages.
I'v just installed wicd. I can't get it to sart, I get errors saying that wicd couldn't connect to it's dbus interface and the wicd deamon has shut down. Then there's a report from SELinux saying that it's preventing /usr/bin/python "write" access on /etc/dhcp/manager-settings.conf and that access is denied to wicd. I can get wicd to start if I su to root, but I'd like to not have to do that every time I boot. Is there a fix?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running Natty on a Lenovo T410. I can connect to wireless with no problem using the panel applet but not using wicd. syslog shows it trying to get a DHCP address and finally timing out with no lease offers. I think a big clue is that if I monitor wlan0 using wireshark I get no traffic at all when it tries to connect, whereas with the applet I see the dhcp traffic. It seems as though wicd is connecting to the wrong wlan0. Running "dhclient wlan0" directly gives the same behavior as wicd. I need to use wicd because I typically run enlightenment so can't use the ubuntu applet.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm at a family member's house for the holiday and was trying to use their wifi. Its a WEP connection (I tried to tell them to change but they won't listen). In the wicd connection manager, I see their network, set the encryption to WEP (passphrase), enter the password, and hit connect. It says bringing up the card, checking authentication, then gets to Acquiring IP address, sits there for a minute, then times out saying unable to connect.
I know I used the right password because it passed the Authenticating part (tested with a wrong password that hangs at this point). I know that my wifi card works because I used a store's unsecured wifi connection through wicd. I know the wifi network works because my brother's windows netbook can get on just fine. I'm running through the same router right now with a wire instead. Why I can't connect wirelessly?
I decided to try wireless so I bought a TP-Link pci adapter TL-WN851N and installed it. I installed Wcid and firmware-atheros. I set /etc/network/interfaces to read auto lo iface lo inet loopbackAll Wicd does is tell me "No wireless networks found."
