Software :: Get Japanese IME Working With SCIM Under Mint(Gloria)?

I have what seems to be an incomplete or incompletely configured configuration of SCIM on my Netbook running Linux Mint(Gloria).To tell the truth, I am not even sure SCIM is the best choice, since I see claims (in LQ forums) that SCIM has been discontinued, and I cannot connect to the SCIM website.So what I want to do is get SOME Japanese Input Method working under this installation of Gloria, for now, I presume SCIM is the right choice for its front end. But I am certainly open to other suggestions.But I must shrink from the idea of installing language support for all languages, which is what Control Center>Language Support seems to threaten to do: it is only a Netbook, I can't afford to waste that much space.
what I see is the above Control Center option, and one other that must be relevant: ControlCenter>SCIM Input MethodSetup. But I don't see any documentation for this, and the menu item names are vaguely suggestive of their functions, not descriptive. So I am quite unsure which of them I need to use to get it working. Is it true, for example, that SCIM itself does not include the Input Methods? I have to download a Japanese IME from somewhere else? Which one? Is that what Control Center>Language Support will do? What DO they mean by "Front end module"? Why does SCIM only recognize an English keyboard layout and a "RAW CODE" (in IM Engine Global Setup)? have Greek and Russian layouts enabled on this machine, too.So now that you have a pretty good idea how disorienting I find the current situation, please point me to something that will clear up the confusion and possibly even give a list of step-by-step directions for getting a Japanese IME working on this machine.

I can't input Japanese charactersn KWriteough the input works in all other applications as far as I know). Does anyone have an idea what the cause might be, or what I should be looking at?The point is not that can't see the characters (but e.g. gibberish instead), but that the characters that I type in the input bar are not transfered into KWrite upon commit.

I can't seem to get Japanese input working with scim-anthy. I have scim 1.4.9 installed and the daemon running. I have the scim-anthy 1.3.1 package installed as well. I can open and modify the scim-settings, but I can't get the anthy dialog to appear. Apparently, ctrl-space should bring up the dialog, but nothing happens. I tried following the instructions on this page under "Open a program with japanese input enabled - via command line", but still no dialog. After starting the daemon, I tried:
Code: XMODIFIERS='@im=SCIM' LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 gvim And no luck. Note that I don't really understand what that command is supposed to do. Should it be something different?

I would like to use Japanese kana (hiragana, katakana, kanji) on Ubuntu but everything that I've tried to get it set up and running isn't working. The Spanish that I have set up is working perfectly so far.
I've read, the SCIM input program should start up automatically when loading a program, it doesn't. When I have it loaded I cannot seem to get the input working.

I'm trying to teach myself Japanese.So, naturally, I signed up at a Japanese social website for language practice. Now, all I need is to be able to type in Japanese. I followed the instructions at this site, and everything seems to work. Everything, that is, except kate. Every other app works fine (even the terminal). But when I press enter to confirm my choice of hiragana/katakana/kanji in kate, the characters just vanish as though they were never there

scim-anthy seems to have been installed perfectly... however, ctrl-space or any other combinations that i'm use to don't activate it... i see the keyboard icon, i can go in set up the environment in it but... i can't get the japanese language bar to show up so I can type in Japanese.

I use scim to input Chinese in Libreoffice-writer. It worked on one of my computers until a couple of days ago.
Normally to start scim I press Ctrl and the space bar at the same time. Then I use the input method Cangjie to input Chinese.
Now when I do so in Libreoffice-writer "English/European" appears in the scim panel. The other choice is "English/Keyboard". The choice of either doesn't enable me to input Chinese.
In all other software scim works as before.
The computer runs Debian sid. On another computer that runs Debian sid too I don't have the same problem. I have version 5 of Libreoffice on both computers.

upgrading to9.10 I suddenly was unable use SCIM to switch language input methods.After searching around, I discovered that with Ubuntu 9.10 Ibus was being used in place of SCIM. That's all fine and good, but I can't get Ibus to work. Specifically, when I open the Ibus settings pane and add my desired languages, the settings aren't saved when I exit.So I tried switching back to SCIM. I changed my bashrc settings and set the keyboard input in language settings back to SCIM. No nice.Honestly, I just want to be able to swich language input methods--I don't care if I use SCIM or Ibus.

Actually I want to log a bug but I don't really know what package to log it against. The problem is that by default Pango is choosing the AR PL UMing CN as the font to render Japanese text when the current font doesn't have Japanese glyphs. But AR PL UMing CN is a Chinese font, so Chinese glyphs for kanji characters (e.g., 覚) are displayed. This is jarring and confusing for Japanese readers.
This situation mostly arises when you have mixed English and Japanese text. Some applications (for instance Firefox) will allow you to select a font for Asian text. Thus if the text contains only Asian characters it will use the font you select, rather than what Pango would have selected. But if it is a mix of English and Japanese, you end up with the wrong glyphs.
Other environments (like gnome-terminal, or a gedit) have difficulties as well. Since the primary interface requires mono spaced roman characters you run into difficulty selecting fonts. Most Japanese fonts only have proportional roman characters. This means that if use a nice roman font and use Japanese text (for instance file names), you end up with Chinese glyphs. What I want is a mechanism that will work across all of Gnome for selecting the font I want to use for Chinese characters. That way I can choose either Japanese or Chinese glyphs.
I realize this is low priority. It only bugs me a little, but many of my Japanese colleagues are put off from using Ubuntu because they are confused by the Chinese glyphs that pop up on my screen from time to time. As I said, I'd like to file a bug, but I'm not sure against what package...

I recently installed Windows 7 64-bit on my Quad-Core 3GB RAM machine. I am now looking to dual-boot it with Linux Mint 7 64-bit. While I am an IT Service Management major, I really only know enough to be dangerous, and I don't want to ruin the first computer that I have ever bought outright. (Nor do I want to have to reload Windows 7 again.) I also want to be able to run Microsoft Office (I despise OpenOffice, so this is not an option), other programs native to Windows, and iTunes. Anyone know how to do this correctly?

I used to run Linux Mint GNOME on my laptop. There was never a problem. I'd connect my Desktop wireless adapter to it and then install the broadcom drivers with ease.
Today I decided to give KDE a try so I installed Linux Mint 9 KDE. All is fine except for the wireless drivers. I get this message in 'Hardware Drivers' window "Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log".
I have noticed that there are not as many Servers available in LM KDE as there are in Ubuntu. Could this be the problem? The drivers are actually not available to download?

I have a network at home which is bridged with a WLI-TX4-G54HP.On the bridged segment there are 3 computers and a NAS, All the computers run Ubuntu 10.10 and have been happily working with this and other earlier versions of Ubuntu for a long time. I have just upgraded one of my machines (TEST) to Ubuntu 11.04 and have encountered a strange problem.The bridged section is connected via the Buffalo WLI-TX4-G54HP ethernet converter which in turn connects to the rest of the network through my wireless router a Buffalo WBMR-G300N.
Now after the upgrade the test machine had an IP address which it must have got from the via DHCP. but the test system will not connect across the bridge. I can ping anything this side of the bridge but cannot ping devices on the other side, including the gateway and vice versa. The other non upgraded PCs will ping across the bridge I tried to install Mint 10 and got exactly the same behaviour. I then got out my very long CAT5 cable and ran it from the switch directly to the wireless router and it works perfectly, this seems to me a perfectly valid work around, however, STMBO for some reason does not. (which is why the lan was bridged in the first place).

I am trying Linux with the mint cd rom install. I have two hard drives and bootit ng on hdo, with windows xp. I installed mint the first time on hd1 using the install cd. When I booted up I could run the linux but not the windows. I reinstalled bootit ng but had not luck. I reinstalled Linux again and this time tried to get it to install grub on a certain partition but still no luck. I reinstalled it again and this time disconnected hd0 and it worked again and I could run the linux with no problem. But when I connect hd0 I can boot windows but not linux. Bootit sees the other hard drive and can see all the partitions on it but every time I try to boot it just says the partition is not bootable.
I have fiddled with various settings and tried setting the embr and hard drive swap but nothing works. Bootit web site had some help pages that said to run grub from a bootable cd and then type grub> find /boot/grub/stage1. I have tried this but always get error code 15 file not found. grub> find /grub/stage1 same thing I install mint using the following partitions. /boot is about 300 megs. / is about 3 gigs and /home is 8 gigs and /swap is 1 gig. I feel that if some knew bootit ng then they could tell me what to do in five minutes. The hard drive is there and recognized and the partitions are there the system works but I just can not boot to it with out disconnecting the one hard drive

I activated my graphics card on Linux Mint which is Nvidia GEFORCE GT 130M. Now when I boot up, after bios the loading screen looks like in the picture (sorry its crappy quality). When it gets to the login screen and afterwards it is just blank, but i can tell its running underneath because i can shut down by doing ctrl alt backspace and then tab and enter. I tried entering recovery mode but it was the same. Atm im using a live cd.

I loaded Linux Mint 7, Gloria, on an Emachine with a 120 gb HD, with 512K ram, dual booted with windows Vista. Re-partitioned the HD into 2 equal portions of 60gb, with 58gb for Mint and 2gb for swap. Got online and got all (>200) updates for Mint 7 Gloria. Mint comes up fine, but if I go to Menu>Computer (file-browser), nothing I click on works. No files will open, (clicking on the little triangles does not open that file).and I can't even close that "page" with the x-box in the upper right hand corner. Any thoughts? A friend thinks is could be the amount of memory (512) and says I should use Ubuntu because it requires less.

I am brand new to linux and i am finding it really frustrating cause i always thought i had quite a knack for computers. ive looked online and searched a bunch of stuff but because im so new to linux i am having a hard time even understand some of the stuff. i really want to get comfortable/fluent with linux and unix and what not.

The ethernet cable instantly gave me connection and i was able to run updates but the wifi still doesnt work i think the updates only updated the free ones and not the non-free ones cause i dont remember ever specifying to download the non free ones how do i manually specify to download all available updates?

I am currently dual booting between Linux Mint 10, and Windows Vista SP2. Wireless works fine in both these OSes, but when I quit Mint and load Windows, 70% of the time my wireless stops working.
ie, it does not detect any wireless networks nearby, althought there are tons of them.
Restarting the wireless device doesnt help, I have to restart my computer at least 4 times for wireless to start working again.
And as of now, my wireless in Linux Mint has stopped working.

I have scim-hangul and all its dependencies installed. I can type hangul in Konsole and Konqueror, but it doesn't work in Firefox. How do I investigate this? What are some things I can try? Edit: I saw another thread on iBus and Korean. I am trying to install ibus-hangul. We'll see how that goes. Edit: Okay, I installed ibus-hangul. Then I ran im-chooser and selected ibus-hangul. From the preferences, I added "hangul". Finally, I logged out and back in and it is all working.

In earlier versions of (K)ubuntu, I have used SCIM and the Yawerty input method to input Russian with a phonetic Latin keyboard.SCIM does not seem to work with Kubuntu 10.04, and UIM does not have (as far as I can tell from searching the repositories) Russian input.The Russian keyboard layout installable in Kubuntu is in the Russian version of the layout, rather than a phonetic Latin layout; I am not familiar with the normal Russian layout and I do not have stickers to stick on the keys to guide myself in using that layout.

I installed Lucid several days ago, and have just noticed that SCIM no longer works. I need it for Japanese input, but cannot turn on Anthy. The manual is either nonexistent or extremely terse with a lot of presupposed knowledge.I've installed German, Russian and Spanish language support, along with CJK. I can't even get the SCIM tool to pop up now---except ONCE!Simply reinstalling using Synaptic overlays the existing problem(s), and does not resolve any issues.SCIM may be conflicting with the desktop Switcher applet? Actually, SCIM seems to be conflicting with other Gnome desktop shortcuts, as well

This happens under slackware 13.1 32 bit and 64 bit. If scim-bridge is running, firefox will freeze the whole XWindows, especially when a pop-up window appears within firefox. Replacing scim with fcitx (Chinese only) input method solveed this problem. This annoyed me for quite a period even when I was using slackware-current because I did not know what caused firefox to behave strangely. Why no one reported this problem? I think no one uses scim and firefox at the same time here.
