View 2 RepliesI was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.
I have a dual boot and my windows plays audio fine.My ubuntu plays audio fine as well however when I click on the Volume Control icon on the panel it gives me this error:No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.and I am still unable to control volume. I have alsamixer installed and it can control my system sound fine but all this time I've been able to use the controls on my HP Pavilion dv5250ca laptop's keyboard controls to control the volume and I'd like to be able to continue doing that- I haven't been able to for the last 2 days.
View 7 Replies View RelatedHow might i be able to play a small blip/beep sound to let me hear/test the audio levels upon volume change? Mac OSX users may know what I'm talking about. I had a similar application in windows. It helps me guage my volumes before i play games/...../videos.

View 3 Replies View RelatedDoes anybody know if it's possible to get the volume control knob (the one on the device) on the USB Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi device in Ubuntu 10.4? The sound is working great for me, but I actually bought it mostly for the volume so I'm hoping there's a way to fix it before I return it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm not able to hear any sounds from my system. The panel does not have the volume control button anymore. I'm not able to run System -> Preferences -> Sound. I get an error saying "Waiting for sound system to respond" And if I run 'pavucontrol' in the terminal, I get "Connection failed: Connection refused"
Also recently I've noticed that when I run some commands in the terminal I often get this message "Home directory /root not ours." Can this be related to the sound problem? I am on the system as root.
I have no problems with the sound card, however, when I connect a PD552 USB sound adapter into a 4 port hub in order to use headphones it simply doesn't work. I posted the problem on the Ubuntu site and received a suggestion to run lsusb from a terminal. I did this but never received any other replies addressing the issue. This is what I receive from the command. It shows up as device 7 but I have no idea of what my next steps are to insure it will work.

When I started using Slackware I've been using USB headset. Everything ran perfectly fine. They got recognized, I could use all of it's functions and so on. Unfortunately volume control on them stopped working so I had to service them, and like in every third world country, yay I need to wait minimum three weeks just so they can press a button and say "Yup, they don't work".
I bought normal headset to use them while other one is getting fixed, and didn't expect any problems with them considering they are "old" technology, normal audio input and output.
Now problem is following, sound works fine but microphone doesn't. Once I managed to "fix" it by switching audio input from mic to something else and then back to mic, now even that doesn't work. Another... "problem" is if I leave my USB webcam plugged in while booting computer, there is no sound at all, ether on line ones or USB ones but I can easily solve that problem by unplugging webcam, rebooting and plugging it back in later.
Now everything ran fine until my computer shutdown while I was sleeping. Don't know why, but it started happening recently, don't see anything smart in logs so I assume its... something, read it could be cache, HDD, temperature and so on but since logs don't write down anything smart... will deal with it some other time.
When I talk I can actually hear myself on the headset, which probably means that they work. If I put mic boost all the way up, I can hear myself perfectly clear, but somehow... seems that that information just doesn't get to Slackware, well it gets somewhat considering that it reacts to me adjusting mic boost on KMix, but everything else... no.
Arecord doesn't record anything, TS register as microphone isn't plugged in at all, skype doesn't get any input ether.

My audio worked completely perfectly running Fedora 14. I upgraded to Fedora 15 and discovered my audio no longer worked. As far as I know I didn't change anything. I do hear random pops and clicks from my speakers every few seconds. It's a bummer because this worked out of the box on Fedora 14 without any screwing around, and now it's totally broken in fedora 15. Everything else about my upgrade has been going pretty well, but life without sound is not nearly as fun and it's frustrating to have something not work that used to work just fine.
Here is some information and things I've tried:
- Just for grins I booted from the Fedora 15 live CD and observe the exact same issue as I see when I boot from my HD (just pops and clicks out of the audio.)
- motherboard: ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 (using onboard audio)
- lspci reports: 00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40)
- cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 | grep -i codec reports: Codec: Realtek ALC892 (this is what the motherboard manual lists as the audio hardware.)
- I've run pavumeter as some have suggested and I see outputs on both left/right channels when audio is playing (but still hear nothing but clicks and pops.)
- I've run "alsamixer -c 0" and verified all my levels are maxed out.
- I've opened up the sound settings dialog box and made sure the correct hardware device is selected, tried different profiles, tested left/right speakers, still no progress at all.
- I know I have the speakers on and plugged into the correct output jack, but just for fun I tried plugging the speakers into each of the other possible jacks, but that didn't help.
- lsmod (fedora 15) reports:
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10, but so far I've been unable to get sound to work. I know my sound card is Realtek, because I've had to install the HD Audio Codec Driver when I was on Windows. I downloaded the driver for Linux and it is currently sitting in my home folder. When I tried to Code:sudo ./installthe driver, it failed for the following reason:
Code:
WARNING!!! The mixer channels for the ALSA driver are muted by default!!!

I have the usual problem of "My sound is not working". I have a few images and my output from:
Code:
lspci
Code:
lspci -v
and
Code:
aplay -l
I can't really do anything with the speaker as it is hidden in the case.
The workstation is running FC14.
I have the audio out of the media machine passed into the line in on my workstation. It's just handly to have the audio pass in this way so that i can manage the volume or headphones or whatever from one machine.
This worked, and worked well, for a very long time. I recently reinstalled the workstion, FC14 still. After the reinstall, my passthrough doesn't work.
If i start up some media on the media machine, and then open up the volume control on the workstation, i can see the volume meter moving along with the audio, but nothing plays out of my speakers.
I just installed Mint Debian version on an old desktop computer, but it doesn't play audio.
At first vlc even had the whole audio menu greyed out; I followed this, downloaded the deb and installed it. It seemingly recognized my card, but upon reboot, everything is still silent - though vlc now has the audio section accessible.
If I go under audio preferences and select hardware, no device is present.
Here's some information. code...
Any idea what to do to get audio? Everything else works, I'd hate having to wipe the partition just for this...
I have a fresh install of Natty and i'm having some issues getting sound to work. My laptop has a built in sound card which works just fine. However, i also have a usb 5.1 sound card which isn't working at all. Both devices show up in 'Sound Preferences' but when i select the 5.1 device as the output device sound doesnt work. I ran the alsa-info.sh script and the output can be found here.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIn ubuntu 10.04 my X-fi Fatal1ty Titanium sound card worked for my speakers but I had to use onboard sound for the mic. When I installed 10.10 the sound card no longer works at all so I have to run the speakers through the onboard sound.
The second problem I have is that Skype will not pick up my microphone all other programs seem to be able to record from the microphone just fine but skype does not. Ive tried selecting all the different input device options from the skype settings but none of them seem to work.
EDIT: Sound doesn't work at all in wine.
EDIT2: The X-fi card no longer shows up in the sound control panel.
I'm looking for great audio player that has it all - sound quality, easy to use, functionality and eye-candy if possible. For Windows there is plenty great players - Foobar2000, Winamp, Apollo(sound quality isn't skinnable), The KMPlayer etc... but my favourite is AIMP2 - it's awesome for people who have lot of music files and want everything from other players.. I tried QMMP and Audacious(remade XMMS) and Amarok but they doesn't offer much.. Also i tried run AIMP2 with wine but it doesn't work in Mint 9(it did on Ubuntu Ultimate 2.8 though for some reason) and foobar2000 but some features of this program are blocked in wine like equalizer preset load + firefox addon to control foobar while browsing web can't be used aswell..i also went through alternative list(P.S.) but i don't see anything close..
how to get AIMP2 work in wine on Linux Mint 9 (im using this distro atm but im looking for universal solution since i might move later to other Linux or BSD). [URL]
I installed Fedora 12 64 bit on my HP dx2255 Desktop. The audio was working fine until I ran "Sound Preferences" application to test Microphone, the audio stopped working and the "Output" tab in "Sound Preferences" application showed "Dummy Output". After restarting the Computer audio started working. All of a sudden it stopped working when I tried to run "Sound Preferences" application to test the Microphone. This happens the same way all the time. I am able to get my audio back without restarting the Computer by running the command "pulseaudio --kill", but still the issue persists. I mean when I try to run "Sound Preferences" application to test Microphone, audio stops working and I have to run the "pulseaudio --kill" command or restart my Computer to get the audio back.
View 1 Replies View Relatedmy sound stopped working on anything running through the browser (firefox) then shortly after I had no sound at all. I had just installed an update for mint earlier but the loss of sound was not immediate. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling firefox when I noticed no sound on it, but I am not sure if I did it right since it looks so different than the windows install process. I found the mint update packages but didn't immediately notice anything that might be sound (but what do I know)

I also am having trouble with hearing videos on line, and have a problem with the drivers to be able to play dvds on my computer which I used to be able to do. there are other problems that I do not want to discuss at this time but will probably find the answers to them soon.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed Mint XFCE (Debian based). After activating the backport repos, a lot of things were upgraded, one of them being XFCE, which upgraded to 4.8. After that, I can't listen to songs or hear any kind of audio. Prior to the update, everything was OK. Why do I get only the "dummy output" indication? I've been using Linux for more than three years, so I have some knowledge on the sport. Nevertheless, I've never had such an issue.

I have excuted alsa -l through terminal, but it showed no Device Present, or something to that effect. When broaching the subject in Mint Chat, I had some excellant incite, but still no resolution. It may be a Connexant Audio Driver, which doesn't appear to be very well supported in the Linux Community.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAnyway, being a Windows user before this, I enjoyed recording videos of my computer and the programs on it, but when I switched to Ubuntu 10.04, I kinda hit some tracks.
I installed gtk-recordMyDesktop and permanently killed PulseAudio and installed GNOME ALSA Mixer.
What my problem is is that I want gtk to record digital sounds, you know, what I'm hearing through the speakers, and not my microphone.

View 4 Replies View RelatedStrange one. Just upgraded my mother-in-law's computer from 8.04 to 10.04 via the update manager. All seems to be working beautifully except ...
* When I run gstreamer-properties and do an output test I get a test sound through the headphones plugged into the front audio socket of the machine using the 'Analogue Headphones' setting in Sound Preferences. (This rules out dead headphones.)
* When I try to play audio through any app I get no sound through the headphones, but if I change the setting to 'Analogue Output' in Sound Preferences I get audio loud and clear through the speakers which are plugged into the audio socket at the rear of the machine. how the gstreamer-properties test is getting audio to the front socket I guess I'd be getting somewhere.
I did was install MInt 9 on it. Everything is going well except no sound at all. Not even the 'start up chime' of any music/videos. I have the volume buttons working on the laptop and I have checked sound preferences and nothing is muted. I did not dig much further as I have learned with mint and ubuntu that can create problems. This is a fresh install and no sound from the get go. How should I proceed to trouble shoot?

I am using the Dynamic Static version of Skype in Mint Debian OS, which uses pulseaudio.
Voice communication works OK but there is no ring sound in or out and test sound is grayed out.
New Ubuntu installation with a big problem: no sound.
OS: Ubuntu 10.4.1
Hardware: HP Pavilion Elite e9150t (64 bit)
Sound card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
Preliminary checks of sound level settings and obvious dumb stuff but there is still no sound. The problem seems to be that the system does not recognize the existence of the sound card and insists on using alternative audio devices.

When I go into Sound Preferences I can crank up the output volume above 100%, making it audible from my monitor's built in speakers.
(this is for a kiosk that doesn't have room for extra powered speakers) Every time I reboot it resets output volume to 100%. Is there a way to change the volume back to 125% or whatever max is so the general public can hear the video that is played after a reboot? (this is to be a permanent installation that won't even have a keyboard or mouse attached, so automating this is a must)
Some of my movies have low audio - is there a way to have the final output sound maximized before output (independent of media player software)?
