Fedora :: No Sound In Skype Previously Working Well Under VLC
Dec 5, 2009
I am running Skype installed via yum: skype-2.0.0.72-fc5.i586 on F11 x86_64 My sound is working perfectly under VLC etc. but I cannot get anything out of Skype. Test calls produce deafening silence. I am really unclear on how the sound stuff works.

I basically can't get my mic to work in F12. After several releases fighting with pulseaudio, F11 finally worked almost OBO, after going to system->preferences->advanced sound configuration and setting all the input volumes to the maximum. But now there's no advanced sound configuration tool, and I just can't find anything to make it work. Skype isn't working, nor is gnome-sound-recorder. I do record some static, but nothing more. By the way, I'm on an Acer Timeline 3810T.

You really have to love this fantastic Ubuntu system which destroys your setup and programmes with an update.
It seems as though one of the updates made a mess of Skype this time. well done.
Ok so here is what's happening.
First i have to say that to get my sound card working i needed to upgrade ALSA. Everyhting was running fine until....NOW.
I haven't used Skype in a while but now i thought lets use it a bit. I start up Skype there is sound. but then suddenly sound is gone. video is just fine. sound is gone completelly from Skype. mic doesn't work and neither do spekers, eventhough upon launch everything works. i can't even do a test call. in fact i could do it once but the sound was messy.
also the skype seems to have crashed as i can't exit it at all. it's just keeps running as process.
anyone had something similar? any solutions? i would post this on Skype forums, but since Skype worked before and now it doesn't anymore i believe it is Ubuntu issue.
I am running Ubutnu 10.04.

I love new Ubuntu 10.10. However, despite my best efforts, I cannot make sound recorder/skype work. That is, microphone would not simply record any sound. My mother board is Asus M2N68-AM.

I can't use cd-rw's or dvd-rw's that was previously burned in Windows. I have a lot of them that I still have from my Windows days and want to re-use them. But my Ubuntu can't delete the rw's so that I can use them again. I tried both Brasero and K3b. Both I just get "erase failed". It happens on both my desktop pc and my laptop. Is there a way or and app that will be able to erase these rw's that I can re-use them with Ubuntu ?

I am working for Fedora 12 installed on my laptop, and skype has worked. I was able to speak, able to listen and everything (besides some installation problems) was working fine.
Then I allowed Fedora to update(or bugfix or enhacement) some items of my system.
Now when I click on the loudspeaker symbol in the panel and open the mixer I see various tabe for sound input and output. Finally a good idea, and I even have a slide for skype!
But it does not work, I don't hear anything from skype (version 2.1.0.47).
I am able to record and playback via arecord/aplay, so in principal it should work. Any ideas what is wrong? Maybe a bug in a bugfix?
Some more informations for the pros:

I am having some trouble with my skype at fedora14 using pulsaudio. Everything works fine until I start skype. After skype is running, I have a really bad sound. Cracking all the time. When I do
Quote:
pulseaudio -k
everything is fine again. Seems to me, that e.g. xmms uses pulsaudio but skype does not. Could it be it talks direkt to alsa? I tried uninstalling alsa-pulsaudio-plugins but it did not help. Some sides/users mentioned to edit /etc/pulse/daemon.conf :

I am having problems with Natty AMD64 (Ubuntu 11.04) and LIRC/IR-Keytables.
I have a Hauppauge WinTV card (Bt87 (TV card and IR receiver/transmitter) that worked (for the first time) automatically with 10.10 and LIRC. I recently moved over to 11.04, copied my LIRC config files over (hardware.conf, lircd.conf, lircmd.conf, etc), and received the error couldn't find any node at /sys/class/rc/rc*
The modules I had previously been successful with were: lirc_dev & lirc_i2c, as is apropriate for my speific card.
I then learned that Natty incorporated a lot of RC elements in to the kernel, and tried following:[url]
Which suggested removing lirc. At this point, ir-keytable also gives the same error about no node at /sys/class/rc/rc*
I think that I am having a problem with the correct driver being loaded for my card. When I look at a dmesg, the relevant section is: (note: I'm not sure if this dmesg was from before or after I uninstalled LIRC and just tried keytables)
Code:
The 3rd last line makes it seem that the IR capabilities have been recognized further confusing me as to why no /sys/class/rc/rc* has been registered. I've attached an unedited copy of my proc/bus/pci/devices, and below is my lsmod.
Code:

I am still struggling to get skype running on that platform, but it hardly works. First I tried to install skype-2.1.0.47-fc10.i586.rpm but it did not work, always ending in "Aborted (core dumped)".Then I found an entry in some forum and tried to use skype-2.1.0.47-fc9.i586. rpm, and it worked! I could make calls, the microphone was recognized and everything worked as it should be.
Until today. For reasons beyond my scope skype stopped working, and after I have looged in with my skype-name I got the above Aborted-message again. Even after the reboot of my Dell Laptop skype refused to work.I even installed all the recommended yum packages I found in this skype forum topic. Can anyone please advise me how to properly install a stable version of skype with Fedora 12? I searched the Fedora forums but did not use any useful entry.

I've seen a couple of threads about recent issues with skype, but nothing like this. Since today my mic is not working in skype (it does work otherwise, for exmaple in sound recorder). I'm using F11 x64. Yesterday I upgraded to the last skype version, and today the mic wasn't working. I downgraded now, thinking that was the problem, but still the same issue, so maybe some update did this (I'm not sure if alsa or pulseaudio got any update yesterday or today).

I recently started having a strange problem: whenever skype makes a sound, e.g. when a contact logs in or out, rhythmbox puts itself into paused mode. this is even reproducible. when I go in to the skype settings, sound devices, and click on "Make a test sound", rhythmbox pauses whatever song it's playing. here's some debug output:

Skype now runs, but there is an error when attempting to use voice. When opened in terminal the error is thus: ALSA lib pcm.c:2211:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default Over and Over again. Am I missing a 32 bit library on my 64 bit machine? EDIT: Smiley face not intended

I'm having a problem going from F12>F13 using preupgrade with a wired internet connection. The current F12 installation is up to date. The upgrade crashes with the "the root for the previously installed system was not found". I've also tried upgrading using YUM and was also unsuccessful. Has anyone run into this problem with this upgrade?

I have two problems. I installed a RHEL variant (scientific linux) on an already dual boot system with ubuntu and vista.
It replaced GRUB with (I think an older) GRUB version and to add to that I cannot see my ubuntu ditro anymore. is there a way of reinstalling the GRUB that came with ubuntu then adding the RHEL distro to it?
my second problem is that I cannot figure out how to enable wake on lan in scientific linux (RHEL). on ubuntu I would just write a small script and update all runlevels to run it at startup. what is the alternative on redhat?

I have installed Skype beta 2.1 on my ubuntu 9.04, everything works except the mic. All I get is noise (SSSHHHHH) when i try to use it. moreover Looking in volume control, no matter what volume I have the mic set to initially, as soon as I initiate a call the mic volume goes all the way to zero (then initiating that crackling staticky bug) and turning it back up doesn't work as the volume slider just slides back down. and also one of the mic channels (left or right, I can't remember) comes to zero and slowly the other follows it.

I've installed Skype on my Debian Lenny AMD64 system using method describe in [URL] . I also installed pulseaudio using aptitude, but not sure that this required.
I can sign in to Skyp, call out to my local phone number; phone rings. But I have no sound through my Logitech ClearChat Comfort USB headset and no sound is heard on the phone.
If I click on Applications/sound & video/pulseaudio volume control, I get:
Connection failed: Connection refused
1) Am I missing a configuration step? If so what do I need to do where?
2) If not configuration, is there another issue that needs to be resolved? What? Where?
3) Why do I see Connection refused when I clike on pulseaudio volume control?
Note: I tried to listen to npr, but no sound there either.

I'm on Ubuntu Karmic, and running Skype 2.0.0.72 -- since I couldn't get the latest version to work with my USB microphone. If I have Skype running, no other programs will produce sound (i.e. Amarok, VLC, flash in the browser, etc.). If any of those programs are active when I start Skype, Skype will fail to produce sound & won't work properly. Is there a way I can allow side-by-side usage of Skype and my other audio-producing programs, since all my other programs seem to get along just fine when it comes to sharing audio?
Audio Devices in Skype in case it will help:
Sound In: USB Device 0x471:0x311 (hw:U0x4710x311,0)
Sound Out: C-Media CMI8770 (plughw:CMI8770,0)
Ringing: C-Media CMI8770 (plughw:CMI8770,0)
Again, both my current Skype configuration & sound in general programs works on my system -- they're just not playing well with each other.
