I am using xterm as my default term.Now, I want to use xfce-terminal as my default terminal, but I cannot configure the font in xfce-terminal to use fixed font used with xterm.I tried to do it from the preference menu, but fixed fonts were not shown there.
View 1 RepliesI haved "yum install"ed a few fixed fonts, e.g. bitmap-fixed-fonts, but they do not show up in the xlsfonts listing, and hence, I assume, for the same reason "xterm -fn 9x15" complains that the 9x15 font is not found. The fonts are delivered as pcf files. I have followed some directions on the net, but have not been successful at having the pcf font files integrated into the Fedora 14 font system.

Ubuntu Linux searches for fonts in specific locations as listed in the /etc/fonts/fonts.conf file.
A look at the contents of /etc/fonts/fonts.conf file indicates the following directories which are searched by Ubuntu Linux for fonts. They are :
/usr/share/fonts
/usr/share/X11/fonts
/usr/local/share/fonts
~/.fonts
So if you want to install new fonts in Ubuntu Linux or Debian for that matter, you can copy the fonts to any one of the 4 directories listed above.
The last directory ~/.fonts is a local hidden directory in every user’s Home folder. If you install the new fonts in this directory, the fonts will be available only for the person logged into that particular user account.
If you want your new fonts to be available system wide, to all users, then you should install them in any one of the first three directories listed above.
Once all your fonts are copied to the specific font directories, you have to make Ubuntu Linux aware of the new fonts so that it can make use of them. This is done by running the following command in the console :
$ sudo fc-cache -f -v

I'm using Xubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, and I'm trying to setup a keyboard shortcut for xfce4-terminal. I've read a million threads and articles telling me how to do it (go to settings >> keyboard >> application shortcuts tab and click add), but when I open that interface there is no "add" button, although the interface is a table that impliesn in its appearance that things can be added to it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSince the upgrade to Xubuntu 10.10, I'm having issues with Xfce4-terminal. When I use aptitude, the home and end keys don't scroll the list to the top or bottom. With vim, it generates input of adding a new line with F or H on it above the current line. Ctrl+arrow left/right also generate unwanted signals/characters.This does not happen with Kubuntu or Ubuntu and when I install Gnome-terminal and use that, everything works as you expect. This even happens on the live environment. I don't want to use gnome-terminal, as it pulls in more packages than I need and the Xfce4-terminal should just work.
Another thing that happens is that when I read a man page or close vim or aptitude, it behaves as if it's in a TTY: the text it just showed stays on screen or it clears the bunch in the current view and puts the prompt at the bottom. It should be that the application just closes and you get the prompt back the way it was before you started to read the man page for example.It is purely a terminal emulator problem. Does anyone have a solution for these issues?
I had GNOME DE but recently I've switched to Awesome WM.The only problem I have I can't set smooth fonts in Gnome-terminal.If I start gnome-settings-daemon, all the fonts in terminal become smooth, but is it possible to make it work without gnome-settings-daemon?I would change the terminal if in another smooth fonts were.

I used Ubuntu for three years and was recently trying Debian and am now giving Fedora a try. When I switched to Linux I was almost computer illiterate. Even now I only know a little about using the terminal. So forgive me for asking such a simple question.I want to install some extra founts that I need, but Fedora is a little different than the systems I am familiar with. I quickly looked through posts in this forum and noticed solutions using long series of terminal commands. With Debian and Ubuntu I added founts by using a nautilus command to get by the permissions (specifically, gksu nautilus). Does Fedora have a similar tool, or must I use the terminal? I want to install quite few founts and do not want to spend a whole day doing it. If terminal is the best solution, I need a little clarification. I saw people using su in their command lines. Does that refer to sudo?

My eyesight is horrible but I want to use more terminal applications. I also use AwesomeWM for tiling, so windows resize frequently. Also on the short list are cut/paste by keyboard and good support for launching links.
So I used Arch linux for a while and was really impressed and how colorful the commandline output was. Not only from ls, which I was able to emulate by adding "alias ls="ls --color"" to my .bashrc, but also during, say, bootup and other times.Anyway, I was just wondering, what tricks do you guys use to make your command line experience more visually appealing? The font settings are all serif and sans serif in both the system fonts settings and firefox settings.
I am using ubuntu 9.10.
Any idea why this could be happening?
I would like to use the Adobe Garamond Pro in my text doccument in open office writer. I got a text document where from a friend where it is used so I know that it can. But when I want to edit I cant find it in the fonts dropdown menu.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a folder with over 1500 fonts, I would like to move them to my /usr/share/fonts folder so that they can be used. Some are from Windows, some are just random extras. I've installed the msttcorefonts, but there are quite a few missing that make some wen pages look different.
How can I go about putting the fonts from my folder, into the appropriate /usr/share/fonts folder to be used? And how can I move them all? I can't drag and drop them, and mv FONT_NAME /usr/share/fonts for all of them will take a month or two. Is there a way to elevate my self to be able to just drag and drop them all? And which folder would they need to go into for them to be used in Chrome and Firefox?
I have just installed openSUSE 11.2 X86_64 on my laptop, I then used KDE to install lots of type 1 fonts for my printer. These get loaded to /usr/local/share/fonts/...These installed fonts are visible to KDE (KWRITE) and GIMP so I assume that the installation was O.K. When I start openOFFICE writer I do not see these fonts. The font selection appears to be the fonts located under /usr/share/fonts. I have not tried other ooo3 components. I assume that they are not going to see the fonts either.
I have searched google and it appears that /usr/local/share/fonts is the correct location for non-packaged fonts. Has anybody any idea what is wrong? I think I could move all the fonts to /usr/share/fonts and ooo3 would work but this seems to break the installation directory structure. I have considered symlinks but I don't like the idea of defining a font twice to Linux and creating the syslinks is more work than reinstalling the fonts if they are lost

After I upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze, Thunar (in Xfce4) can't seem to detect when a CD is placed in the CD-ROM drive. When I put a USB in the USB port, Thunar adds an icon to the desktop, but with data CDs this isn't happening, and I must mount them from the terminal. However, CDs made from an ISO, for example, my Debian install CD, are detected and appear on the desktop.

Simple enough, but I would like to have this deployed onto different desktops from an imaging server using multicasting, we use Symantec Solution Suite 2.5 therefore the smaller the image the better for us. I would also like the image to be fully manageable i.e log in and add / remove apps etc but all it will need is a user account, a root account, web browser, rdesktop and vmware view open client.
I have gone down two routes:
1. There are Live-CD's out there that can do the important things that I want which is to use vmware view and I do like the fact that it is compatible with all our current hardware so I am happy to use this for the time being but I hate the fact that we have to boot it from CD as we have quite a few PCs in the room. I would like to convert the distro to boot from HDD exactly as you would from a CD but cannot seem to find a solution to this.
2. I have created a Debian and a OpenSuse build which does exactly what I want albeit taking a bit more disk space than I would like, but my issue is how do I capture and deploy this to different hardware as our imaging server only does cloning.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo, I had a system failure earlier today. I decide to reinstall xubuntu 9.10 on my computer. Everything goes fine and then when I start getting things set the way I want them, I find that for some odd reason, I can not change my wallpaper in xfce4. Added to that, when I click the right mouse button, nothing happens(yes I have it checked to open the application menu) and when I click in the left mouse button and drag(usually a frame appears), nothing happens.

When browsing the web, maybe I end up in a link to download some stuff through the internet. When I click a window opens prompting me (desktop environment= xfce) what to do with the file. Who is in charge of the download procedure from my side of the cable? I'll assume he is the download manager, a term new to me up to recently.
I want to get rid of all and every one icon in the desktop. The desktop environment is Xfce4. Is there an easy way of doing it?

I know its just a small preference thing - but is there a simple way to stop the filenames being underlined when the mouse cursor hovers over the Thunar window icons?

Installing Nautilus instead seems a bit of an over-reaction
