After I upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze, Thunar (in Xfce4) can't seem to detect when a CD is placed in the CD-ROM drive. When I put a USB in the USB port, Thunar adds an icon to the desktop, but with data CDs this isn't happening, and I must mount them from the terminal. However, CDs made from an ISO, for example, my Debian install CD, are detected and appear on the desktop.

when i turned on the computer today, however, i plugged in my usb drive, and clicked to mount it, and lo and behold, i got a strange message:

im not entirely sure what this means. i can mount the drive manually through the terminal if it's running as root, but thats not a particularly practical way to do things, as i am a student and often have to switch USB drives and ipods many times a day.
I have a compact-flash card that has some corruptions. I woiuld like to try to fix this by copying out the data from the flashcard using ddrescue or something and then trying to fix the filesystem outside the flash.
BUT Fedora does not allow me to really mount / make a block device of the usb-device, so I can not use ddrescue to copy out the disk-image.
Why is my Nikon camera not a block device, and then the other "GUI-applications" triggered on that device in stead?
I can't get Ubuntu to mount my Sony DRU540A, no matter what I do. Audio CDs, Data CDs and burning are impossible, does anybody have any ideas on how to mount this unmountable drive? It worked well enough to install Jaunty Jackalope, and I never had any problems using this drive with windows xp, but now that I've upgraded Karmic Koala it doesn't seem to work no matter what I try.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded to the new 10.04, and when I have the Alternate CD in, it shows on my desktop, and I can search all the contents of the CD, so I know it's registering. But when I try to install anything, via the terminal, .deb packages, synaptics package manager, it always asks me to insert the CD. Then I click ok and it says it's not mountable, even though I know it is because it's on my desktop.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI currently am setting up an htpc running Karmic. The problem I am having is getting my Raid 0 to be mountable. My raid is not my boot partition, but is for data storage. My setup is a zotac motherboard with three sata connectors. I have a 300 GB drive, my eSata port, and my DVD attached to these. In the PCIe expansion slot I have installed Syba 2 port Sata PCIe 1a card using the Sil3132 sata II host chipset. Off of this I have 2 1.5Tib Hdds that I am setting up as Raid 0. During the boot I enter the chipset BIOS and establish this as a Raid 0.
When I install Karmic it sees the Raid and my 300 GB drive so I install to the 300 GB Drive and everything works fine. I am able to boot to the Hdd and run the OS. I then installed GParted and setup a partition on my RAID as GPT since I want one large partition of 2.78Tib. I then Format it through GParted as ext4 and I am able to mount and access it. I then reboot the system, and can no longer mount the filesystem. What I found interesting is If I reopen GParted I can then mount it. I traced it down to the fact that the until I access GParted the Block Special Device (sil_bgabagabaedd1) does not appear in /dev/mapper. Everytime I reboot I need to go into GParted to restore the Block Special Device then it is mounted. I think I am missing something in the raid setup as to why it is not being retained. What have I missed? What do I need to do to retain the Block Special Device? Is there a boot config setting?
Edit: I did further research and found that if I do kpartx it will appear just as gparted, but on reboot vanishes. I found something similar at this thread but not comfortable in updating dmraid: [URL] I think it is related to gpt and I will try to use a smaller partition to see if the behavior changes.

I have the ndiswrapper util installed on my computer, however, I have been unable to install the corresponding driver from the provided cd. I have a WNA 1100 wireless adapter. I have not been able to locate a mountable .inf file on the cd. Only a "setupt.exe" or a trans.tbl file.

Note: When I am mounting Safesync with Nautilus, everything is functional and ok. But I need my command line access because I want to use rsync. A workaround could be to access the resource via the nautilus mount. Where can I find this via the command line?
I'm totally unable to play or mount audio CDs and unable to use video DVD's on my box right now. When I insert an audio CD I get a dialog box saying:
Unable to mount disc: Location is not mountable

An error occurred: Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file. As far as I can tell I have the relevant CSS libraries installed I'm lost without being able to play CD's and DVD's on my system.
First the starter facts - I'm running 9.10 karmic. I have two Hard Drives, The one which used to hold my Windows OS has just been formatted. (By me) using GParted.
I have created the following partition in /dev/sda1 : a 186 GB space of file system ext2
So - no more Windows. Which is good.
All my old Windows files are on sda2, along with my Linux OS
When I click on "places", I can see my new drive space listed as "stl" which is the label I gave it.
I can mount (click and open) it, and there is a label there showing "lost and found"
When I try to save anything to this drive, or drag anything from the sda2 into it, I get the message that I don't have permission to do so.
I gather it's something to do with being root, or such like.
I've installed PYSDM but I think I was doing more harm than good when I tried to use it. Likewise the changes I made with Disk Utility simply resulted in me having to re-format the partition again.
All I need to do is be able to write and read from this device. Being simple I thought it would just plug and play.
I downloaded and burned Mandriva one to a cd. When I tried to open the cd on an old-ish Mac PowerPC I received a message saying "no mountable file systems". Is there a way to get around this problem?

View 7 Replies View RelatedSo, I had a system failure earlier today. I decide to reinstall xubuntu 9.10 on my computer. Everything goes fine and then when I start getting things set the way I want them, I find that for some odd reason, I can not change my wallpaper in xfce4. Added to that, when I click the right mouse button, nothing happens(yes I have it checked to open the application menu) and when I click in the left mouse button and drag(usually a frame appears), nothing happens.

When browsing the web, maybe I end up in a link to download some stuff through the internet. When I click a window opens prompting me (desktop environment= xfce) what to do with the file. Who is in charge of the download procedure from my side of the cable? I'll assume he is the download manager, a term new to me up to recently.
I want to get rid of all and every one icon in the desktop. The desktop environment is Xfce4. Is there an easy way of doing it?
Note: Xfce4.org has only mailing lists. No fora.
I know its just a small preference thing - but is there a simple way to stop the filenames being underlined when the mouse cursor hovers over the Thunar window icons?

I just installed p7zip with GUI from slackbuilds, but there is a problem, since i can't get it to work with XFCE4. After looking into package, i noticed that .desktop files are installed into:

and if i look inside of one of these files, the syntax is quite KDE specific and are probably supposed to be seen in a menu when you right click on file. So the big question is: is it possible to make XFCE4/Thunar do something similar? So far i have tried to view p7zip_extract_to.desktop file in a text editor and i learned, that the command for this looks like this:

And if I right click on archive and then select "Open With Another Application" and then input this command, then double click on archive, i get this nice pop up:

Which is fine for extracting, but when it comes to creating archives, it's a bit inconvenient to do this every time i need something archived. I would would really like to have 7zip menu when i right click on file, so i welcome ideas on this matter.
First and foremost please give me your opinions on what I want/should to do for security. I would like to set up my system sp that the session times out and requires a password to unlock the screen. Also I would like a firewall and maybe virus detection just in case. I want to set up a guest user with minimal to no privileges. How should I go about doing this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe touchpad on my laptop being ultra-sensitive, I like to use the Pointer Capture applet in the mousetweaks package when typing. I've tried adding this to the taskbar in XFCE but get a message that "Assistive Technology Support is not enabled."
When I enable it, log out and back in, however, there is still no luck. The larger question is: Can this Gnome package be used in XFCE?
Edit: Pointer Capture works fine in Gnome but I would like to use it in XFCE.
I have problem to install my fonts in my Debian. I used this guide but it not worked for me, i just could right click on the font and install it with font viewer.
Ubuntu Linux searches for fonts in specific locations as listed in the /etc/fonts/fonts.conf file.
A look at the contents of /etc/fonts/fonts.conf file indicates the following directories which are searched by Ubuntu Linux for fonts. They are :
/usr/share/fonts
/usr/share/X11/fonts
/usr/local/share/fonts
~/.fonts
So if you want to install new fonts in Ubuntu Linux or Debian for that matter, you can copy the fonts to any one of the 4 directories listed above.
The last directory ~/.fonts is a local hidden directory in every user’s Home folder. If you install the new fonts in this directory, the fonts will be available only for the person logged into that particular user account.
If you want your new fonts to be available system wide, to all users, then you should install them in any one of the first three directories listed above.
Once all your fonts are copied to the specific font directories, you have to make Ubuntu Linux aware of the new fonts so that it can make use of them. This is done by running the following command in the console :
$ sudo fc-cache -f -v

Red are my fonts in two different folder.
I am experiencing some difficulties accessing some of my drives which have folders/files whose names include special characters. That problem has appeared just now, in Fedora 11, and just in XFCE4 (it somehow got stuck with the English default). In neither GNOME nor KDE happens.
The problem is not narrowed down to Thunar because even the terminal fails to recognize the special characters in XFCE4.
I guess that is simply solved by editing some configuration file, but I can't seem to find it.
What do I need to do to allow XFCE4 recognize special characters?
EDIT: It's definitely XFCE4, because if I open Thunar or xterm from GNOME, they recognize special-characters-filenames very well.
I recently installed XUBUNTU for a friend of mine. When we configured the panel we could specify to see the daily weather (temperature, ...) and also when we hovered with the mouse over the weather-icon an interesting 6-day-weather-forecast was shown. This is the xfce4-weather-plugin.
I tried to install this plugin in Ubuntu but I could not find this plugin (as expected because Ubuntu is a GNOME-desktop) back. Is it possible to activate this interesting plugin in GNOME? This 6-day weather-forecast is really appealing and I wonder why such a nice plugin is only available for a rather "simple" xfce-environment and not for a more "complicated gnome-desktop?
I just installed the XFCE4 desktop environment after installing 'menu'. I then logged out and logged back in after changing session to XFCE. My question is weather or not my installation and configuration of TOR and Polipo are going to work the same within this environment? Am I going to have to reconfigure? Or is this just a change in how the desktop environment is handled within Ubuntu?
