Applications :: Linux Program To Open .mus Notation Files
Aug 2, 2010
Is anyone aware of a program which will open .mus music notation files or convert them to .xml files? I have several files from FINALE which I would like to open in Linux, but Linux distros will not allow FINALE to run. .xml files will open in MuseScore.

I've recently started learning linux OS, and the most confusing for me is the notation in man pages or command synopsis. I was looking for some kind of guide describing it, but couldn't find any. Thing get even worse when there is no standard notation and it looks different from one command to another. In other words, I just want to understand what all these brackets '[ ]', dots like '...' pipelines '|', italic or UPPERCASE words, etc mean at all. I can't tell the difference between [DIRECTORY...] and [FILE]... What does it mean when there are three dots inside the brackets or outside of them? And so on. To conclude, all I need is a comprehensive description for the notation syntax adopted in linux world.

I have a while(1) loop, and the error is: glibtop: open (/proc/stat): Too many open files This error occurs after about a half hour to an hour of running. I've tried running this multiple times, both with using glib_close() at the end of the loop, using glib_init() and glib_close() at beginning/end, and just using glib_init(). The strange thing is these have no effect on the actual glib_get functions.

lately I'm experiencing a few issues with Firefox 5.0 on my Ubuntu 11.04 installation. First of all, when I try to open pdf files, I often get a black page and I've to try to reload it many times before I can effectively read the pdf (even for small-size ones).
Secondly Firefox doesn't record settings about my preferred applications. If, for example, I want a file .torrent to be opened by deluge I have to enter manually /usr/bin/deluge because by default it would be opened by gedit. No matter if I select "use as default application" the next time the issue will be present again.

Is there any program in Ubuntu that can open .docx files natively? I know that open office can open .doc files, but I need a program that can open .docx files. It also has to be able to read the embedded data, such as text themes and bibliography data. Conversion is no good. I have been using Office 2007 through Crossover, but for some reason it can only have one window open at a time, which severely limits what I can do.

Now, as a new to linux person I thought I would try a distro that makes the transition pretty smooth. But, I have already found a problem. PC linux OS 2009 looks good, feels good, but when I play any media through Amarok or video through any of its media players, there is no sound.I made sure that it wasn't muted, and I turned all areas of the PC up as high as they would go, but nothing.

I'm having sporadic issues with the openoffice.org program. Sometimes, power point presentations will crash the program and then I can't open any open office programs without rebooting the computer. The problem seems to be just with powerpoint files and I'm not sure what the issue could be.

A friend of mine is setting up infrastructure for a new call centre and they are using Ubuntu Linux on staff desktops. They need a chat program that will only work on the local network, and they want to allow staff to only access a browser, the chat client and spreadsheet software.
(a) What chat program can they use, and
(b) How can one disactivate most of the programs running on the desktop? Is uninstalling via synaptic/ Ubuntu Software Centre overkill?

I need to find a tool to keep two directories with exactly the same content. I want to start it manually.
I don't want a conventional backup tool for compressing my data files, I want to keep files in your normal form.
I know I could use "cp -R dirA dirB" but it don't remove dirA excluded files in dirB.
I was going to write a script for this, but I belive it there must be yet.

Last week my ubuntu 8.04 os got a Seamonkey browser update ( 70-80MB totally )which I was happy to get. The down side is the new seamonkey wiped out all of my many different profiles and the many different bookmarks that were in those profiles ( 300-350 or so )!I am wondering, and hoping, that there is linux software program available that could independently hold many easily available bookmarks!!Does anyone know if such a program exists and if they have had any experience

I have some checksums.md5 verification files from an ntfs external drive, but using windows notation: instead of /, spaces between file names (not escaped), reserved shell characters (like (, &, ', to name a few). The checksums.md5 has a bunch of checksums and filenames:
[code]...
I want to use this checksums.md5 to verify the files that I've copied to my machine: but I'm on a Linux, so I need to convert the names inside checksums.md5 from Windows to Linux to use the md5sum utility from the shell. The first line in my example would become: f12f75c1f2d1a658dc32ca6ef9ef3ffc My Windows & Files (2010)/[bak]/testing.wmv Is there some application for this (converting a file listing, from windows cmd notation, to linux shell notation) or will I need to create a bash script using sed that just "replaces" what is "wrong" with the filenames

I'm trying to figure out how to change the tomboy saving notation (.note) to (.txt). I'm fairly new to Linux so I may be wrong in thinking this is possible. However, if it is possible, a finger in the right direction would be appreciated.
PS: if it isn't possible, maybe there is a way to change the name of the actual .note files in ~/.local/share/tomboy/ to something more readable. Right now they show up like this:
8e824ab7-ba6f-4018-b74d-1a5a245a60bd.note Which is of course makes it difficult to determine which file I'm actually looking at.
