Software :: Error: Buggy GNU/libc (version 2.5 - 2.7) Present. VLC Would Crash

Dec 22, 2010

i am installing the software vlc-1.1.5.tar.bz2 on my red hat linux 5.0 after extracting & by firing the command ./configure on command prompt it shows following error & after configure the make & install command is not working

configure: error: Buggy GNU/libc (version 2.5 - 2.7) present. VLC would crash; there is no viable work-around for this. Check with your distribution vendor on how to update the glibc run-time. Alternatively, build with --disable-nls --disable-mozilla and be sure to not use LibVLC from other applications/wrappers.

OpenSUSE :: Update The Buggy Version Of Texinfo?

Aug 22, 2011

in 11.4 the texi2dvi version is 1.135, based on texinfo version 4.13. Now these are old buggy versions (see e.g. texi2dvi: locale-dependent error in egrep [A-z] ), causing that documentation can not be built, for example when building gcc. Now one would hope that Suse provides updates (the latest version of texinfo is 4.9), but I can't find them?

It seems to me that the installation of texinfo is a bit more complicated, because of the integration with your system, so I hesitate to install texinfo myself. Yast should have a bug-reporting facility, where one could easily report such issues. Hope somebody can help (we have to install various pieces of software, which call texi2dvi, which then breaks, making the whole build breaks, and it would be not easy to change the build of these

CentOS 5 :: CentOS Installs A Buggy Version Of Synergy

Mar 10, 2010

As I use a (CentOS) Linux computer and a Windows XP PC side by side, I decided to install Synergy, a software to use one computer's mouse and keyboard on neighboring computers too. However, Add/Remove Software installed Synergy Plus 1.3.4-1 instead. That mostly works... Except there's a known bug on Synergy, see bug 2955158: if you use Synergy Server on CentOS to control the Windows computer, as soon as you touch the keyboard when focus is in Windows, it freezes. (I can still ssh into CentOS, but its GUI is unusable.)

Well, Synergy-Plus 1.3.4 inherited that bug. That makes it, for that purpose, useless. So I uninstalled Synergy-Plus and tried to install the lower version, Synergy 1.3.1-7, as per the recommendation in the comment on that bug report, except: I ended up with Synergy-Plus 1.3.4 again.I tried again from the command line, using yum, to no avail: yum told me Synergy 1.3.1-7 was obsolete and replaced by Synergy-Plus.I had to exclude Synergy-Plus from installation with yum, with "-x 'synergy-plus-*'", to finally get Synergy 1.3.1-7.

There, I don't have this problem. I do think that making people upgrade to Synergy-Plus 1.3.4 is a mistake. It's still not perfect. With Windows as the Synergy server (and using the Windows keyboard), if I try to type a ">" (on an AZERTY keyboard), it types "" instead); and I seem to have an issue to copy text from Windows into CentOS.With the roles swapped, using CentOS as the Synergy server and with the CentOS keyboard, I can copy from Windows. I'm still not sure what is the cause of this.

CentOS 5 :: GLIBC And Libc.so.6 - Relocation Error

Mar 17, 2009

/usr/dlc/bin/_progress: relocation error; symbol errno, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time referrence

And the solution offered is:

But the problem still exists.

If I use 2.4.20 I get an error about shared "something" in library and I cannot use command line like using command as ll, ls, mkdir but if I change that to 2.6.18 I get the error above but I can now use these commands: ll, ls, mkdir, etc.

I'm using Progress 9.1D and the application was compiled using CENTOS 4.4. Now I just copied the Progress 9.1D as is to new server HP Proliant ML110 G5 with CENTOS 5.2 installed.

Copying Progress 9.1D to other computers (IDE and not SATA drivers) with CENTOS 4.4 installed has no problem. Everything runs.

Could this be due to GLIBC version. Progress application was compiled using GLIBC version 2.3.4 but my GLIBC now is version 2.5.

If this is the case, can I just copy GLIBC version 2.3.4 and put it in my ProliantML110G5 server? If not how do I do it? Downloading and installing etc.

Ubuntu :: Error While Loading Shared Libraries : /lib/libc.so.6 During Startup

Jun 3, 2010

After the upgrades have installed on my installation of Ubuntu 10.4 (there were some kernel upgrades, I don't remember if there was any libc update there) it asked me to do a reboot. So I did and I got that error when Ubuntu was starting:

Code:
/bin/sh: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libc.so.6: invalid ELF header
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
And if I run Ubuntu in recovery mode there's what I get after this:
Code:
Pid: 1, comm: init: Not tainted 2.6.32-22-generic #35-Ubuntu

There's also Call Trace after this, and a bit of text there, but as I'm rewriting those errors from a photo captured (because I cannot find logs of this in /var/log/) I will skip it unless it's needed to solve the problem. EDIT1: I cannot find anybody who had this problem during startup, there are only guys who had this during compiling or installing software

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting Error On Rebooting - Disk Drive Not Ready / Not Yet Present

Jan 29, 2011

I am trying to install 10.10 from a Live CD over my 9.04 (it would not do the upgrade automatically due to apparently lack of disk space.) at the end of the my best guess at the process (alas, Linux is pretty much a plug and pray operation for me.), on rebooting, I get the message: "the disk drive for / is not ready yet or not yet present" I must have messed up at the Allocate Drive SPace / Edit Partition step. I have three existing partitions:

7Gb for OS previously 9.04
35GB for data (which I clearly don't want to mess with)
a a bit for Swap.

So, I have clicked on the 7GB partition /dev/sda1 and have another window, Edit Partition, which is asking me: New partition size (I would just leave it at 7007) Use As (I presume I can leave it as EXT4?) Format the Partition (NO unchecked?)and Mount Point? Now here is where I don't have a clue. The pull down options are:

/, /home, /boot, /tmp, /usr, /var, etc.

not knowing any better, my first time through I just picked "/" and that is what got me to the message "the disk drive for / is not ready yet or not yet present" So what should I be specifying at this point?

My work laptop is now booting into a grub recovery whenever my USB key isn't present (with error: no such device and the uuid) - and hangs on a blinking cursor whenever the key is plugged in.I'm not familiar with what my options are for grub rescue, but ls shows (hd0) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) (fd0)

My laptop is encrypted, so I don't have much chance of recovery unless I can get back to the windows bootloader.

Software :: X11 Initializartion Failed Error After Crash?

Sep 28, 2010

I was running Linux Ubuntu 10.4 and used my Firefox browser to find info on osteoporosis for my wife. I entered the following search string in Google search: osteoporosis reclast problems. At the very top of the returned results page was a sponsored result with a simple link: Reclast.com (WOT had it flagged with a green=OK icon). I clicked on it and immediately a bizarre page appeared. It said that my computer was infected with a long list of various viruses and malware. Several of its child windows were flashing and, most strange, one of its windows had a progress bar and said it was searching my Windows c:/... directory. I don't remember the whole pathname, but it included the words "..user" and "Microsoft". This I interpreted as very suspect since, when running Ubuntu, there is no such directory, although I do have Windows XP installed on its own partition so I can dual-boot.

The warning page also insisted that I needed to click on a link it provided that it stated was necessary to fix the problem. I didn't do that, because at this point I suspected that this was a dangerous page and I would possibly be inviting some malicious downloads if I followed the instructions and clicked the offered link. Instead, I used a kill utility to kill the entire Firefox browser ap. Firefox went away and I then ran Firefox again. The same warning page immediately appeared. Again I killed Firefox. I then decided to reboot Ubuntu to see if that would correct the problem. That's when things got worse.

I have a dual-boot system with Windows XP, Ubuntu 9.10 (2 kernels available), and Ubuntu 10.4 (3 kernels available), with recovery mode choices available for all the Ubuntu kernels. When I tried to reboot, the grub menu appeared like normal. But when I selected my default Ubuntu 10.4 choice, the boot process seemed to run normally but stopped at a splash page with a violet background and "Ubuntu" in large type with the five dots below. And it stayed there; the boot process never continued. The first time this happened, it did do a fsck of the HD, but then stayed hung at the splash screen. I tried to reboot again several times, but got the same result, except there were no more fsck checks that ran. I even left my computer on all night, in case the boot process was doing some type of lengthy processing in the background. Eight hours later, it was still stuck at that same splash screen. I tried booting into the other grub choices. Windows booted completely normally. I ran a complete virus scan while booted into Windows, which found nothing wrong. I then tried booting into my Ubuntu 9.10 choice. It also booted completely normally (which is how I'm writing this post). However, ALL of my three Ubuntu 10.4 menu selections hang at the Ubuntu splash screen I described above.

Next I ran the recovery mode menu choice for my Ubuntu 10.4 kernel. That worked OK. While using that, I ran the utility to repair all packages, which seemed to rebuild everything. I also ran the choice to update grub, which seemed to run OK. Still, I was unable to get past the frozen splash screen when I tried to boot my 10.4 kernels. Finally, I highlighted the Ubuntu 10.4 menu choice and pressed (e) to edit it. I removed the "quiet splash" options and then tried to boot. Much processing went by on a text screen and, in a short time, I was left at a login prompt on a terminal. I was able to login OK and the terminal mode seemed to work fine. I checked around and all the file system seemed to be there OK. But no GUI (it normally boots into the Gnome desktop).

Booting again into my Ubuntu 9.10 choice, I confirmed that the entire 10.4 file system is there and appears normal. I can access all the files and all of my data is still there intact. From the terminal I tried running several commands. (I also have the KDE desktop installed, although I normally work with Gnome). One possible clue to the problem is, when I tried to run Konsole from the terminal command line as a test, I got the following message:

Code:
KUnique Application: Cannot find the D-Bus session server: "/bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally with the following error: Auto launch error: X11 initialization failed" I checked and found that there is no "/bin/dbus-launch" file in either of the 9.10 or 10.4 filesystems, which seems strange. It seems that, since that bizarre virus warning page and my kill of Firefox and a reboot, the boot process fails to initialize the GUI mode. I have no idea why this is so, and my multi-boot system had been working fine for a long time.

I've installed the repo from debian-multimedia.org so I don't know if that's causeing any problems. It crashes on me multiple times a day. Now it's not the OS itself which is the problem I'm sure but more the software in the repos. However it was my udnerstanding that this software was pretty darn well tested.

Ubuntu :: Buggy GDM - Sometimes Fails To Start 10.10

Apr 9, 2011

Awhile back I was playing around with Plymouth and GDM resolutions. I followed some wrong instructions and screwed up my GDM. I have fixed my GDM, sorta, but at times it will not start or when it does the login screen has strange pixel errors.

Sometimes it starts fine without any problems or pixel errors. Other times I have to boot 2 to 3 times before GDM will start.

If GDM starts with pixel errors, I can still login to Ubuntu and the rest of the OS runs fine. Pixel errors only happen in GDM.

When GDM fails to start I get a blank black screen. Cannot enter command line. OS seems frozen and I have to reboot.

Fedora :: System Crash Then Read Error At Boot?

Feb 23, 2011

I tend to get constant crashes when using internet browsers ( Google Chrome and Firefox ) basically the application hangs not moving in any way, then eventually completely freezes up, the system then locks up and finally crashes.

Upon system re-start I get "Read Error" at boot ( No further information, it literally just says "Read Error" ).

It is sometimes fixed by going into the BIOS and select "Hold on No Error".

I tried installing OpenBios to see if using different BIOS firmware would resolve the issue, but the OpenBios install failed ....so no dice there either.

I am trying to work out if it is a hard drive problem or if it is purely a problem with Fedora.

It was working fine for a couple of months and when it does boot up ... the system works fine, ( Until another crash ).

It seems like the internet browsers crash the system and then the system crashes and can then no longer remember how to boot up.

what this could be that could be software based....if not it looks like I will need a new hard-drive.

OpenSUSE Install :: Crash During Update - RPM Failed Error

Jan 1, 2011

So I installed this system with the net install disk. I really don't want to do that again. It said it needed one update shortly after install and I figured that a net install would pretty much be up to date and I would be fine to wait on that for a day or two. Wrong. I used bit torrent for about 20 hours and downloaded ~60 GB's to the external hard drive. After a while while clicked the little update button closed every thing else then hit apply.

Walk off, come back and the computer is completely non-responsive and the monitor is not getting a feed from the tower. Not even any num-lock blinky light action on the key board. I gave it a minute or two to show any kind of life then turned it off. It came back on well enough to get online and post this but, like the title indicates, that package manager appears to be broken in some way. In Debian based systems there is a command that clears this up. Is there an equivalent for this distro?

I attempted to finish the update but got this error:
Code:
installation of package failed.
Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: error: package NetworkManager-glib-0.8-7.4.i586 is not installed.

Why not just disable that update and see what happens? That's what I said; heres what happens:
Code:
Installation of package failed.
Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: error: db3 error(-30987) from dbcursor->c_get: DB_PAGE_NOTFOUND: Requested page not found
error: error(-30987) getting "" records from Requireversion index
error: db3 error(-30987) from dbcursor->c_get: DB_PAGE_NOTFOUND: Requested page not found
error: error(-30987) getting "" records from Requireversion index .....

The above pertains to a fire fox update of some kind. I still have the install disk handy but would rather not wait the 3 hours it takes to download the packages. How I can fix this. I switched from Ubuntu to SUSE because it is supported by online learning soft ware I have access to.

OpenSUSE :: Suse 11.4: Scribus 1.4.0 RC1 Buggy -> Update?

Apr 9, 2011

someone decided for whatever reason to ship Suse 11.4 with a broken version of Scribus. Not only is the application missing in the KDE-Menu after installation (had to add it manually) but it is crashing frequently. Whenever one adds new text in a Textbox (which will NOT be formated with the specified default font but the first in the list) and then immediately changes the font without first leaving the input-focus of that box: Segfault / signal 11. I understand that there is a RC2 out by now and the specific error seems to be fixed by that.

Now my question is: After having decided to ship sUSE 11.4 with a RC: Will further RCs and maybe the final release of scribus be shipped by the OpenSuse Update? Or does the user have to manually install a working version of that software?
