When I start my system its getting booted through LAN and it showing login screen after I login it shows only black screen. Whether is may by Video adapter problem?
This problem came after I run a Perl portscan program, this script just scan all the ports from 0 to 65535 and reports which port is open and closed.
My OpenSUSE 11.2 is working fine as samba server, no problems, but I have a problem with KDM.My default init runlevel is set to 5 and every time I try to login at KDM (KDE4), the monitor goes black and returns to the login screen.If I hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to console and start /usr/sbin/console-kit-daemon manually, press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to return to KDM login, everything is fine.What do I have to do to fix this issue?

The External gets no signal and the laptop display is used on the login page. Is there any way of having the login page and possibly startup displayed on the external at all times for all accounts.

I have a rather odd problem with a machine. Up until the user logs in everything is fine, but as soon as they log in the display breaks up rendering the computer unusable. Booting from CD is ok, but the monitor is not detected.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an Nvidia card and I am using ubuntu 10.04. Before installing the ubuntu nvidia restricted drivers, the boot screen with the ubuntu logo would cover the entire display area of the monitor. But now, after installing the Nvidia driver and fixing the display resolution of the boot screen with the Plymouth fix, the boot screen doesn't expand to fit the entirety of the monitor display area. How can I fix this? There is a good 2 inch off from either side of the display while booting.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI did a LiveCD to USB install, following the directions I found at [url] When I went to reboot to the USB stick, all I get is a black Screen (monitor is on and lit, just nothing on the display) No cursor or command prompt. I've tried holding shift to bring up the GRUB menu, changing splash quiet to nomodeset, or just adding nomodeset after the splash quiet thing. I've even tried xforcevesa instead of nomodeset still black screen. Looking at the logs nothing is current as of the last time I tried to boot the computer, it's strictly what was written when I installed it to the stick. Other things I've checked/tried, Pressing CTRL+Alt+F1 at GRUB to get TTY, all I get is that blank screen. I've Checked etc/default/grub to ensure the timeout was higher then 0. The Install CD seems to be OK but I have (as it did another install successfully) but I haven't done any throughal checking of it (there was no check this disk on the first screen of the LiveCD) The USB sticks also seem to be ok (in windows though). Using the disk utility on the live CD I did check the file system on the USB stick, the "/" partition came up clean. Anybody have any other thoughts on this install, any thing else I can check?
View 9 Replies View Relatedim installing ubuntu onto a friends ibook, but am first running it live off the disk. it runs well, except for one thing, the display has a problem,i guess it seems like its tiled on the monitor, instead of fullscreen, it has a full desktop taking about 2/3 of the monitor, a sliver of the same desktop right below it, and a line of black to the right.
View 6 Replies View RelatedJust did a fresh install of Natty B1 (previously had alpha 2).. I noticed this issue w/ A2, as well.. plugging in the exterminal monitor (via mini-displayport-to-vga connector) will do the following:
1) turn the screen on the laptop's display entirely black (but not turn it off).. i can move and see the mouse cursor.. but everything on the window appears to not rending or "painted" black..
2) external monitor never becomes active..
the only way to recover is to kill/restart X or reboot after disconnecting the extmon.. having extmon plugged in from boot produces the same results (and it doesn't seem to ever become active during boot up). sometimes this won't happen right away if i plug in the external monitor.. but opening the Monitors system prefs dialog will definitely cause (or detect displays) ,etc I waited to see if the issue would fix itself w/ the beta update, but it hasn't.. Any other 8,1 owners out there that can verify this issue? My (totally uninformed) guess is that it's due to differences in the display/gfx hardware and thunderbolt integration(?)
(I've seen a verification verifications of working-out-of-the-box.. but they were from 8,2 and 8,3 owners (which have discrete graphics cards))... If anyone's gotten this to work with some config stuff, I'd love to see that as well (since the wiki page for 8,1 says it works ootb). If someone could let me know where I should look to capture error output when the above issue occurs, that would be awesome.
I used the Monitor setup to indicate that my widescreen monitor is rotated 90 degrees to the left, to make it long for editing code, but the login page still does not rotate. I am assuming this is something simple, and probably a user defined option since my user is likely the only one with the monitor rotated, as there is just my user defined, but there are the other system ones, including MySQL. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 upgrade from 10.04.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi installed opensuse 11.4 on my laptop (Lenovo T60, Mobility Radeon X1400). It worked fine for some weeks, the first problem that I found was that libreoffice did not work. Calc crashed immediately (screen looked "destroyed", only the panel was really visible, but the system seemed to work so I could log out without alt+ctr+del), writer had the problem after opening some menu options. Now (one week later) after start and login I could not see the panels anymore, I could start programs but those would not be displayed, I only saw the desktop. After restarting, I cannot even log in anymore, the screen looks destroyed as with libreoffice. I created a new user, this works and this is from where I write.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and at first, everything was just fine. This issue came about yesterday, as far as I know, while my screen was locked. The login screen now displays only half of the original login screen (left side) and the other half (right side) is an odd view of a black background with a white box in the center (see this mock up). Another note of interest is that the right side pans as I move the mouse around the screen, as if the right-side view were a second view port to the login screen without displaying it properly.
I am not able to log in whatsoever. An incorrect password results in the standard error message. A correct password results in a temporary black screen, as if to load to the desktop, but then redisplays the login screen as if I hadn't logged in at all. I'm not sure where to begin, as I cannot login to run any commands and the grub menu does not give options to start in safe mode--it just loads directly to the latest instance of Ubuntu.
I'm running 10.04 and whenever i go to the login screen, the username and password window is on the wrong monitor. I'm also using an ATI Radeon HD 4850 if it makes any difference.

Install Fedora 12 from livecd on a widescreen monitor:
- Using Nvidia 96xx drivers for my Gforce2 MX
Everything runs fine at this point. Connect old 17" flatscreen and no network: Login freezes for about a minute after username selection, no password prompt, no mouse movement, no keyboard response, after timeout I return to login screen before username selection .. and can repeat this or.. At that point (or before that point) I can ctrl+alt F2 to 'terminal' screen, login works fine.

startx
Works fine then, resolution is %^# tho, and cant change it at that point due to errors I get. I'm convinced the problem has nothing to do with my X configuration tbh. Booting from the LiveCD on this configuration works fine. I am tempted to think it has something to do with my GDM, but as my knowledge is limited, I cant figure it out. If I reconnect the widescreen, it all works fine ...
I have two monitors attached to my video card. Primary monitor has a resolution equal to 1280x1024 and second has 1920x1200. My gdm login screen always appears on the second monitor even if it is switched off. My question is how to force gdm to show login screen always on primary monitor with resolution 1280x1024? I use Ubuntu 10.04.Now I'm ready to modify gdm sources if there is no such option in configuration files.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been working my butt off all day now trying to get the nvidia drivers installed and then (the hard part) get dual screen to work properly with them installed. Finally I've gotten to the point where both of my screens are working perfect but now the login screen is on the second monitor instead of the first monitor for some reason I do not know.

one of them is a TV with an HDMI input. The login screen shows up on the tv, so if someone is watching a movie, I have to pause it to switch inputs and login. Other than that, everything is fine. How do I get the login screen to show up on the main monitor?
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is the 2nd time this has happened. I installed 11.1 & 11.2 later. After the install I would get the login screen just fine and then when it starts running everything goes white. It is an issue with compiz and my graphics I assume. The interesting part is in opensuse 11.0 I had all compiz items not installed. When I installed 11.1 & 11.2 they reinstalled. For next time is there a way to not have these installed on the install? What I had to do was login in a different session other than Gnome. Then go into yast and remove compiz. Then logout and log back in with gnome and the white screen is gone.

I am a both rhel5 and fedora user.I can not configure my Samsung syncmaster 632nw monitor to display full screen at 1360X768.There is huge blank space on left and right portion of the monitor.The maximun resolution is 1024*768 and minimum is 640*480.
I have tried many times to solve it using xorg.conf but still unable to do it.

So, I just installed Fedora yesterday. I have been trying out different Linux distros and Fedora was next after Ubuntu and SuSE failed severely. So, I installed F14 yesterday and everything has been great... until I tried to set my JAVA_HOME variable. I followed the instructions here.
After editing $ vi ~/.bash_profile as the site instructs, I proceeded to log-out and log back in...except I can't log back in. I have repeatedly gotten the login screen, selected my account, and entered my password. When I enter my password incorrectly, it says 'Validation Error' and that is not what is occurring. The display goes black for a couple of seconds and I am redirected back to the log in screen.
1. Is there a way to change the broken glass/monitor background on the login screen???
2. I have tried to login as root, but it will not accept the password, but if I login with my user name and need to change things that require root privileges the password works fine.
I worked a little back in 05 and 06 with FC4 and FC5 but nothing until now..
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, using an nVidia graphics card. I have my TV hooked up to my computer and acting as a second monitor, using the Twinview option with the gpu. My monitor is set as the primary display, with the TV as secondary.
The problem I'm having is that when I turn my computer on, the main display is black, and all the load up information is output to the second display. Then, when I get to the log in screen, it is also on the second display.
I tried installing 10.04 via Wubi on a friend's notebook and have hit problems with the display. The installation seemed to proceed OK (took ages to download / install - left it running overnight) until it came to boot to Ubuntu. The GRUB menu appears OK, but choosing Ubuntu leads to a blank screen with some icons at the bottom, which is displayed for a few seconds, then the (login?) screen just shows rolling display, like an out-of-tune analogue TV. I suspect that I need a graphics driver or something? The notebook is a logiQ notebook, with 128MB SiS Mirage-3 graphics.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am facing problem with the fresh installation of Fedora 11. (I have moved from Fedora 9). When I try to view videos on ..... or use the Cheese Webcam Booth, I get blurred lines on the screen and I am unable to see any video or pic.
Also I noticed that the when i go to System > Preferences>Display, it shows me UNKOWN MONIOR.
However, if I got to System>Administration>Display and enter the su password, it shows me correct monitor and the graphics driver.
I am not sure if my original is related to the Unknown Monitor.
I also tried to install Nvidia driver but it crashed the xserver and I had remove the driver.
My Monitor is LG 700E and Graphics card is from intel. as I am not able watch any video.
I installed Karmic on an older PC I had laying around, and the only trouble I am having is with screen resolution. It uses an old ATI chipset (onboard) for video, and it doesn't seem to do EDID correctly, so I can't display anything higher than 800x600. I have tried creating an xorg.conf, but it's still not working. How can I tell Xorg to ignore the fact it can't detect a widescreen monitor and display something larger than 800x600? I noticed the log says the sync's are out of range, but I am not sure how to fix it.

1st install no good, but did second to fix some possible mistakes.Booted to login prompt and then, after login, nothing until entered telinit 4, then scrambled screen, then changed to probably the normal screen background of grey/white with numerous white globes, but nothing else and cursor moved, but wouldn't function on occasions also got box with login name, password locations.Got message of "Display not set" and that the problem was so complex it couldn't be explained with these minimal resources.Did third full install and changed screen option from my known resolution with framebuffer, to safe standard, but no improvement.Lilo was installed to MBR, and had 2 partitions flagged as bootable (/ and /boot).Found nothing on forums or FAQ, but suppose could give change of kernel a shot, but as used what cd started with, that seems unlikely.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.
