I am trying to install openoffice, so I downloaded installation file from openoffice.org and saved in my desktop...

Now I tried using yum command it doesn't work

I use the 10.04 ubuntu, somehow I did something and now the apt-get install command doesn't work. No matter what package I try to download, there's always a "couldn't download all packages run update or --fix...." message. When I scroll up I see that it downloaded some packages but it couldn't find them all. So I thought that I should try a different server. I googled it and found that the server's address is stored in /etc/apt/sources.list. I edited that file and replaced all the deb and deb-src lines with the server's address. I saved that but when I tried to download something (like vlc) I got a "E: Couldn't find package vlc" message. I also tried many different server's but there was no difference. Am I doing it wrong? Should I run a command after editing the /etc/apt/sources. list file? Or didn't I edited the file right?

I am getting the following error message when I try to insert a reference:
Zotero OpenOffice Integration could not communicate with OpenOffice.org because the soffice executable directory specified in the Zotero OpenOffice Integration preferences does not contain a "soffice" file. The zotero page does not give a great deal of help. Did somebody make this plugin work with OpenOffice in OpenSuse? Especially: are the paths indicated correct?
What is the macro command (in OpenOffice Basic) to select an entire Row or Column? I tried to "Record Macro", then click on the Row/Column header, which would then select the entire row/column. But "Record Macro" failed to capture this action.

Ive been using linux for a few months now and every now and again i come accross a program that doesnt have a rpm package but says that it can be installed on Fedora using source. I'm familiar with build essentials and the following commands:-
tar xzvf package.tar.gz
cd package
./configure
make
make install
but from what i have read fedora uses a differnet compiler. I'm trying to install Buddi budget manager and the ./configure command doesnt work, which im guessing is because it doesnt have a configure file? Can anyone confirm how to compile from source and whether there are any tutorials specific to fedora.
I've just installed Kubuntu 10.10 a couple of days a go. I've installed IBUS-UNIKEY and it works perfectly with Kopete and other applications. But I can not "activate" Ibus when working with OpenOffice Word. KDEIbus doesn't work with other GTK+ Applications.

Gimp works fine editing and saving photos from/to the nfs share. kWrite can do its thing and read/create files on the NAS. Files I create with vim are visible and editable under windows. OpenOffice however, when I try an open a file I get "file is locked by unknown user." I open as copy and try saving to the share with a different name... No Dice, error saving to share the file is created on the share but it is empty. I did some reading and found a post that said to comment a line from a file called soffice, which I cannot find.
Whenever I used "Ctrl+S", "Ctrl+O", or any other keyboard command that opens a KDE FileDialog, OpenOffice crashes every time. OpenOffice produces the dialog closes it and produces another two and then crashes. This happens from every OpenOffice program. I've tried borrowing a book on Linux, but I'm lost with that too as it doesn't tell me how to add/remove programs let alone get them running in the first place.

I wanted to try LibreOffice out. I found a PPA for it, so I added the source, tried it out, didn't like it, and noticed that openoffice now won't work. Background: I decided I wanted to try LibreOffice out so followed the instructions here: [URL] to install libreoffice.
After a week I found that LibreOffice doesn't actually have a spell checker or thesaurus even though it says it does. Decided I'd had enough so uninstalled it and auto removed the rest of its gumpf and attempted to install openoffice which actually worked, before. Problem is I can't, linux mint wont let me and keeps outputting random rubbish that makes no sense ie:

I installed openoffice 3.2 but had insufficient diskspace at /opt. Thereafter I receive this message if I start the package/update manager.
"A unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:The package ooobasis3.2-math needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.'"
Uninstall and reinstall (at a different location (/usr/opt) is not possible although there is enough space.
I've tried to search for how to install the dev builds of Chromium on Debian Squeeze, but the only information I find is on the google-chrome-unstable package. I tried to install the deb file with "dpkg -i google-chrome-unstable_i386.deb" but it told me there was an error and aborted. Is there any way to install the latest nightly builds of Chromium on Squeeze? On Ubuntu it was as easy as adding the lines:
