Ubuntu :: Can't Get Command To Install Gnome To Work?

Jan 16, 2010

I accidentally removed gnome-desktop when I removed PuleAudio. When I boot, I log in and I am stuck at the CLI. However, I can't get any command to install Gnome to work, including sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop or sudo apt-get install gnome. I forget what the error messages were.

OpenSUSE :: Command Line Applet Does Not Work In 11.4 (gnome)

May 19, 2011

I add a "command line" or "mini-commander" applet to the panel in gnome, but nothing happens.

If I launch "/usr/lib/mini_commander_applet" on a terminal, I get a dozen such applets, for all the times I tried, but then I have an xterm tied up.

If I launch the same from "alt-f2" it does not work, and gives no error.

General :: Apt-Get Install Command Does Not Work

Aug 11, 2010

I use the 10.04 ubuntu, somehow I did something and now the apt-get install command doesn't work. No matter what package I try to download, there's always a "couldn't download all packages run update or --fix...." message. When I scroll up I see that it downloaded some packages but it couldn't find them all. So I thought that I should try a different server. I googled it and found that the server's address is stored in /etc/apt/sources.list. I edited that file and replaced all the deb and deb-src lines with the server's address. I saved that but when I tried to download something (like vlc) I got a "E: Couldn't find package vlc" message. I also tried many different server's but there was no difference. Am I doing it wrong? Should I run a command after editing the /etc/apt/sources. list file? Or didn't I edited the file right?

Fedora :: Gnome Timed Login Doesn't Work On Fresh 13 Install?

Jul 28, 2010

I just installed Fedora 13 on a new computer and the timed login for gnome does not work unless you manually select it. This surprised me as I upgraded a separate computer to Fedora 13 and the timed login feature still correctly functions and does not require user interaction.

Code:
[daemon]
TimedLoginEnable=true
TimedLogin=<username>
TimedLoginDelay=3

Adding the above to /etc/gdm/custom.conf only adds an Automatic Login option that you have to manually select and then the computer will login. I would deem this less than useful.

Code:
[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=<username>

I know you can substitute the timed login with the automatic login and it will instantly login, but this provides no option to select another user. I have been unable to find any information why this feature no longer works and wanted to know if there is a new way or if anyone knows why the timed login feature was crippled.

OpenSUSE Install :: Any Substancial Difference Between Gnome Terminal Or Hitting 'c' To Bring Up Command Line

Feb 25, 2010

so the safest way to go about this is to assume I know nothing. I mean, I have a rough Idea of what a kernel is, no idea what a shell is, etc. I do consider myself computer savvy, but know NOTHING about linux and thats why I'm Diving in, hopefully not too much, this is just to give you an idea of what we're working with here.

After several install attempts I kept getting a blank screen. Whether it be black,white, or the default gnome desktop (without any icons, and simple things like ctrl+alt+backspace just doesn't work, or anything else for that matter) I was ending up with a blank screen. Driver for moniter....maybe....but I did succesfully install it once, and it worked like a charm...shutdown properly, and the next day after work...Boom, same thing after startup.today I started from scratch and re-installed....samething, until I hit the power button, went from the dvd(iso) and did a fail safe, now my resolution is much better than it was the first time..Actual questions.....what did I do to fix it when failsafe never worked before?

Is there a way to save these settings, so I don't run into the problem again, because I don't even want to turn of my computer at this point?If i'm trying to dive in and learn the command line actions, is there any substancial difference between gnome terminal or hitting "c" to bring up the command line?

Ubuntu :: Is Command Line Invocation Of Gnome-terminal To Run More Than One Command

Feb 17, 2010

how to pass something more than a one-command startup for gnome-terminal. I will give an example of what I'm trying to do here:

Code:

#! /bin/bash
#
#TODO write this for gnome and xterm

[code]....

This same error occurs if the gnome-terminal line is changed to

Code:

gnome-terminal -e mcTerm

Is there any way to pass more than one command on to gnome-terminal? I have tried various single and double quoting senarios and in a final attempt, I abstracted to an exported function all to no avail. Perhaps even though gnome-term is better at many things than xterm, xterm trumps it in this instance.

OpenSUSE Install :: Broke Gnome In 11.2 - Connect To The Internet Via Networkmanager And Couldn't Get Wifi Or Wired To Work

Apr 27, 2010

I was having a problem with cairo dock, asked on the board how to resolve was told to reinstall the visual driver for my monitor since I have an ati vid card since with the updated kernal u have to reinstall those drivers(didn't know that, I'm new to opensuse). I thought I did that before so I completely uninstalled it so I could then do a fresh reinstall but I wasn't paying attention and my laptop was unplugged for a while. I stepped away while the install was going on and my laptop died.

I tried plugging it in but had to restart my laptop when I did I got the command line rows and when I tried to start GDM it wouldn't start, I did so as SU. Attempted to connect to the internet via networkmanager and couldn't get wifi or wired to work. Anyway I can access my desktop visually just so I can start yast and install the driver or will I have to reinstall 11.2 or use the cd to repair? If so how do I use the cd to repair?

Fedora :: Compile From Source - Install Buddi Budget Manager And The ./configure Command Doesn’t Work

Nov 24, 2009

Ive been using linux for a few months now and every now and again i come accross a program that doesnt have a rpm package but says that it can be installed on Fedora using source. I'm familiar with build essentials and the following commands:-

tar xzvf package.tar.gz
cd package
./configure
make
make install

but from what i have read fedora uses a differnet compiler. I'm trying to install Buddi budget manager and the ./configure command doesnt work, which im guessing is because it doesnt have a configure file? Can anyone confirm how to compile from source and whether there are any tutorials specific to fedora.

OpenSUSE Install :: Install Error - Config Defaults For GNOME For GNOME Power Manager Have Not Been Installed Correctly

Mar 4, 2010

Things were running fine until GNOME misbehaved;

GNOME failed to load telling me:

Install error, Configuration defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly.

So I

Code:

To the shell and check the logs in gdm and find this:

Could not ask power manager if user can suspend, launch helper exited with unknown return code 0.

So I try

Code:

To see if another user will get the desktop; I get the error

Cant create etc/passwd no space left on device.

So I

Code:

And get the following

I insert a usb drive to prepare for back up; Run

Code:

On the shell to get the usb device name; Then run

Code:

To mount the device.

I end up with:

Cant create lock file /etc/mtab~ 4610 No space left on device(use -n flag to override)

So, I

Code:

And see 9 partitionitions

Code:

Again to check which ones are loaded at boot up time and get

plus some other file systems mounted at boot up, but not mapping to any physical partitionition.

I try

Code:

On partition9 and get warnings because its mounted, so I chicken out and try

Code:

And run into the error:

cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4832 no space left on device (use -n flag to override)

Good thing is there is a

Code:

Since space is a problem, I

Code:

On partition6 which is not mounted at boot up time and try to

Code:

I still get the error

cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4735 no space left on device (use -n flag to override

Code:

For package update tells me

cant open /var/run/zypp.pid in mode w

Code:

For power management tells me its not even recognised as a command.

Ubuntu :: Run A Terminal Command (eg Pkill X) With Gnome-do?

Apr 14, 2011

I just started using gnome-do, and it is an awesome little bit of software. Far superior to the standard application menu. Strangely, though, I just can't figure out how to run a terminal command from it without opening the terminal first. In the standard application menu, I can just type, for example "pkill MisbehavingProgramX" to kill a program, but in gnome-do, if I try that it searches all my stuff and typically comes up with nothing except a few webpages that I've visited that my have some of those letters in it. how to just run a bash command directly from gnome-do?
