Software :: VHS Convert To Digital How To Connect Hardware
Jul 2, 2010
I want to convert some old VHS tapes into digital format and I am not quiet sure how to hook up the hardware. I believe I have two hardware devices that are capable of transferring data but I need a little boost to get started. I have an NVidia 8600 gts that has a VIVO (Video In Vidio Out) connection. I can buy a 7 pin to component cable then connect my vcr device to component input but then what? I think it requires a driver to accept input on that device. I don't know what driver or what do once I have it set up.
The other device I have is a Haupaugge Hvr-2250 which accepts Component (or SVideo) in but again I am not sure how to (or what to) configure so I can run analog into that device. I have MythTV installed and I thought that would be a natural for capturing input and recording to digital but since I don't know how to set up the input I can't convert anything to digital. Don't know if it matters but I am using Fedora 13 with an Asus mother board and an AMD chip.

My Canon PowerShot A590IS digital camera records movies with a format of:
Stream #0.0: Video: mjpeg, yuvj422p, 640x480, 20 tbr, 20 tbn, 20 tbc
Stream #0.1: Audio: pcm_u8, 11024 Hz, mono, s16, 88 kb/s
For whatever reason, XBMC refuses to play the audio. Xine plays the audio but with a distressing static noise. MPlayer and Kaffeine play the files fine. The bottom line is XBMC and Xine seem to dislike pcm_u8 audio, or the way the audio is streamed with the video.I also cannot fast-forward the movies with some players, such as MPlayer or SMPlayer.
I haven't found whether I can select a different format with the camera, but to avoid player problems I'd like to convert the videos. My primary focus is playing in XBMC and Xine because I have both apps configured to be controlled with a remote control. What is the most compatible format to convert? This is with 12.2 or 13.0. I have ffmpeg, mplayer, and mencoder installed and probably all or most codecs I could use.

how to have alsa convert a digital sound stream to analogue before it is sent to the hdmi out? I would like to modify asound.conf. I do not have gnome as a desktop so I need to manually input the changes to asound.conf. The reason I ask is. I have sound going out of my acer revo to both spdif and hdmi. The spdif goes to my receiver and I want digital passthrough for that. The hdmi goes to my tv and I need it to be analouge before it gets to the tv. Right now, I get passthrough to both the spdif and hdmi. (the tv is all static) I want to have alsa convert the signal for the hdmi output only.

I am using Ubunto 10-04 LTS and trying to connect to Western Digital (World Book) network drive. By signing into Mionet I am able to reach this drive on my network and remotely. Trying to run the executable resulted in the following error:
"The file '/media/Disc 1 290909/WDAnywhereAccess_3_6_0.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit."

I have a Pure Evoke Flow radio that connect to my wireless router for streaming internet radio, this works fine. It also has the functionality to connect to a hard drive over wifi and play any MP3 files on it and it runs on Linux.
With Windows (sorry) I just click on the folder and make it Shareable, on the Radio I then set it to search for servers and it finds my wife's PC and plays her music.
I have (I believe) set my music directory on Ubuntu 9.10 to be shareable, it downloaded and installed a couple of files including samba and then rebooted. However my Radio cannot see it.

I have Ubuntu 9.04 and just installed Sound Converter. I am trying to convert a bunch of .ogg files to mp3 to play on my iPod and it's not working so well. In the Sound Converter options I have is set to convert to high quality mp3. I choose the folder that the files are in and after a moment (slow laptop) Sound Converter populates, I hit 'convert' and it shows that the conversion completes in two seconds. All that it did was create the new folder structure of artist/album but there is nothing in there. Not sure what I am missing. I used Sound Converter before and it worked fine.

An easy way to convert wav files into mp3 (or ogg).
$ sudo-apt-get install nautilus-script-audio-convert mpg321 vorbis-tools lame nautilus-script-manager.
after that run
$ nautilus-script-manager enable ConvertAudioFile
Now, when you right click on audio file, under 'scripts', you will see ConvertAudioFile option.

I have a lot of .flac files downloaded from several sites. Most of them come with a .cue file, and the .jpg with the cover, etc. It seems it is the intention of the uploader that one rebuilds the original CDDA. However, if I had a stand-alone CD/DVD player with flac I would hardly see the point of converting the flac to cdda. Furthermore, I could even play the flacs with a software player although, in this case, the audio quality would not be so good due to the noise picked up by the signal from the PC digital circuits.

We've got one of those fancy, modern digital cameras and it's great for taking pictures, but I'd love to back those pictures up, too. When I connect the camera via its USB cable to my computer, the OS just doesn't "see" the camera/connection. Nothing shows up in fdisk -l. However, when I connect my mobile phone or USB HD via the same port, they show up in fdisk and can be mounted without any problem. The scary thing is that on my partner's laptop, running gNewSense (with Gnome), it (auto)mounts without any problems. The camera is a NIkon Coolpix L20 with an SD card.

I used GnomeBaker to burn photos from my digital camera onto a CD. I have a ThinkPad R51e with Ubuntu 8.04 installed as the only operating system. I do think that I will be able to use GnomeBaker to put photos on the CDs but I was wondering if there wasn't something that would be better.

I'm running GNOME on Fedora 11. My daughter is shortly due to take possession of a digital SLR camera - a Canon EOS 400D. Apparently it comes with a USB cable. I know very little of photography, or of image stuff on Linux, so I have a few questions: Will I be able to connect it to my Linux box and import the images? Is gthumb-importer the appropriate application for this? Is there better? Are the images jpegs, or something else? I only need to copy the images to the laptop and to be able to view them - I don't need to edit them or any such.

I have a Samsung Digimax S600 camera that I'd like to use to download pictures to my ubuntu v 8.04 LTS with all the latest updates.
However, there doesn't seem to be an application that will work with my camera. I've tried Camera, gtcam and Digital Camera that gets loaded while installing the version. gtcam and Digital Camera have an option for a Samsun Digimax 800 but none for my camera.
Does anyone know of an application that has my camera as an option.

I'm having some problems with Ubuntu 10.04 64bit finding my digital camera (Nikon CoolPix S4000). For whatever reason, when I plug in the camera via USB connection, Ubuntu will not detect it. The odd thing is that on my old Ubuntu 9.04 32bit install my camera was detected fine (it appeared as an icon on the desktop, akin to a flashdrive or any other mounted drive).

Does anybody know of any digital cameras that can be controlled via Debian? I'm not speaking of a webcam but a digital camera, and I'd like to be able to send commands to the camera via usb; perhaps by means of a bash script that would take snapshots every x seconds for a total duration of y seconds.

My local library (you know, the place where they loan you books) started to supply books digitally.
Unfortunately, they only support "Adobe Digital Editions", which again only is supported in Win/Mac
I googled it, and I can see that somebody made it work in "Wine", so I would like to do the same thing.
I installed Wine now (yum install wine) and I got the executable Windows file here: [URL].. how can I proceed further?

I have a brand new Sony DPF-D75 Digital photo frame. I tried connecting it through the usb port with my 11.3 box in order to upload my pictures to it, but it isn't automatically mounted (unlike any other usb device I plug in, like my mouse & pen drive). Should I install any specific driver or something?

When I plug in my digital camera, it mounts it as a gvfs-mount. I have a few problems with this:
- It takes 2 times: I have to plug it in, wait, unplug it, plug it back in before it shows on the desktop
- Don't have command line access: Nothing in ~/gvfs after mount and I cant do anything with gphoto2://[usb....]
- Cant access it from another desktop instance: gvfs-mount -l lists it when I'm on a terminal on the desktop, but not when I'm ssh'ed into the system.
Really I just want to mount, rsync photos for backup, unmount and be done with it (all this in 3 lines of a shell script that I'll add to udev so its fired when ever the camera is plugged in)
dmesg: usb 1-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hd and address 8. Configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
lsusb: Bus 001 Device 008: ID 04a9:3176 Canon, Inc. PowerShot A590
How can I mount it as a normal mount (perhaps something that automatically shows up in /media or something).

I'm using Kubuntu, but installed Nautilus so I could use Dropbox. Yesterday I plugged my camera and it popped up a window asking what to do, but it didn't list any application, and the only option available was Cancel. Then I couldn't find it anywhere on the system, neither where it was mounted. Today I've turned on an USB hard disk and Nautilus popped up (why? shouldn't be dolphin...?), then afterwards plugged in the camera, and there it was on Nautilus.
But in it's interface I also couldn't find the mount point... I've seen I can add an entry on Dolphin's "Places", but I need the mount point. Is there a way to make Dolphin add the entry automatically? Device Actions under System Settings is a bit confusing... And Digital Camera (also under System Settings) gives "Unable to initialize camera, check your port settings and camera connectivity and try again. Could not lock the device", and indeed, I can't unmount it on Nautilus....
