Fedora :: Import Digital Photos Via USB?
Sep 12, 2009
I'm running GNOME on Fedora 11. My daughter is shortly due to take possession of a digital SLR camera - a Canon EOS 400D. Apparently it comes with a USB cable. I know very little of photography, or of image stuff on Linux, so I have a few questions: Will I be able to connect it to my Linux box and import the images? Is gthumb-importer the appropriate application for this? Is there better? Are the images jpegs, or something else? I only need to copy the images to the laptop and to be able to view them - I don't need to edit them or any such.

I have a digital camera which does not seem to have a drive, yet can hold around 15 photos. The windows software included with it allows Windows to access the photos, but I want to access them with Ubuntu. It has a USB port.

Ubuntu Hangs While Trying to Transfer Photos and Videos From Digital Camera I have a Canon Powershot S3 IS and I've been trying to transfer photos and videos (13 gigs worth) from it to a local folder (I'm currently using Ubuntu 10.04) via USB cable. I've had very little success - I've only transferred one video file, everything else failed, including a single photo transfer attempt!
First it would take really long for the actual transfer to start after I've dragged and dropped files from the camera to a local folder (or even doing ctrl+c and ctrl+v). The progress bar would appear, but then it would take forever before the file transfer would start. In the case of the single video transfer, it started and finished after a while. But when I selected all of the videos on the camera and tried to transfer it all, it would just take a really long time, slow down gnome to the point of hanging, and then eventually just show me an error message indicating nothing could be transferred.

Connected Camera. Imported photos to Shotwell.Shotwell asked whether to keep or erase photo from camera. I chose to erase.Started viewing the imported photos. After sometime Shotwell froze.Checked my photos folder, the photos haven't been copied there yet. Checked the camera; It's empty. There were 2 sqlite databases (.tmp files) in /tmp. Copied. I couldn't find those photos in either /tmp or ~/.shotwell or anywhere else.

I have flash player installed, but when i hit the button to create an album in facebook, it tells me i need to install flash. I use opera, but the problem also exists when i try firefox. However, i'm running ubuntu on my netbook, also with opera, and here it works just fine.

I own Fedora Core 12 and an HP scanner. I want to make digital copies of all the pictures I took a few years ago. I have a lot so I tried scanning five at a time thinking I could cut and paste into smaller images like with MS Paint on Windows. HPLIP 3.9.12 wouldn't let me modify the scans so I tried GIMP 2.6.10. GIMP 2.6.10 is a nightmare! When I opened my scan of five pictures I had trouble opening a new image. Then I had to specify the size of the new image. The when I cut and pasted I couldn't rotate. Then when I figured out how to rotate my image was too small.
Then I tried scanning just one picture but HPLIP left a lot of blank space. I tried cropping out the blank space with GIMP but the image size was the same with the blank space. I don't want to post photos to Flickr that are mostly empty space.I wish I could show you examples but the forum won't let me post them.Any ideas or suggestions for a program for Fedora Core 12 that's got the functions and features of MS Paint?

My local library (you know, the place where they loan you books) started to supply books digitally.
Unfortunately, they only support "Adobe Digital Editions", which again only is supported in Win/Mac
I googled it, and I can see that somebody made it work in "Wine", so I would like to do the same thing.
I installed Wine now (yum install wine) and I got the executable Windows file here: [URL].. how can I proceed further?

Is it possible to import an xorg.conf file from Debian to Fedora and have it work? The reason for this is that I have an older monitor that only offers 800x600 as the maximum resolution.

I'm setting up a new Linux box at home and going for a Mini-ITX. Of course my main choice of distro is Fedora 13. The site I buy computer parts from have discounts on Western digital caviar green 2TB drive, but read that it doesn't work good with Linux? Made a search here and seems to be some workaround to get it to perform better, but mostly people seem to suffer from using a Western digital caviar* on any Linux distro except Ubuntu 10.04.
The drive I've been looking at is WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR GREEN 2TB SATA/300 64MB. Have the Linux kernel made a fix for this drive or should I go for another brand? They also sell Hitachi, Samsung and Seagate on the site and so far SAMSUNG SPINPOINT F3 1TB SATA/300 7200RPM 32MB seems good. Also read Seagate baracuda discs are good.

I don't see the camera in the /media folder, nor do I see it in /mnt. When I browse to it through nautilus it shows up as "gphoto2://[usb:001,008]/" with the "008" changing each time. how do I see my files through bash?

I have a Linux-based PC, running Fedora 13, and am attempting to upload photos from my Soncy Cyber-Shot DSC-W310 digital camera. When I insert the CD that came with my camera, I get the following error message:
Archive: /media/SONYPMB/Install.exe
[/media/SONYPMB/Install.exe]
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive.
zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /media/SONYPMB/Install.exe or
/media/SONYPMB/Install.exe.zip, and cannot find /media/SONYPMB/Install.exe.ZIP, period.
I spoke with your tech support person, and he indicated that I could press menu, and go to setting and select PictBridge on the USB option, but that does not work either.

I have a Nikon Cool Pix 990 camera which I could access under Fedora 11 (and previous) using digikam and/or gphoto2. However under F12 and F13 it no longer works. When plugged in I get a Nikon Camera icon that the system thinks is a usbfs. However the camera is too old for that interface. If I unmount the device then it shows under usb-devices as having Driver=(none). How can I get it to be recognised as a non-usbfs device ?

I've installed audacity, and have the LAME plugin installed. Problem is, I can't import mp3 files into audacity, I keep getting:
"This version of audacity is not compiled with mp3 support"
DO I need to do anything to get audacity to import mp3s ? The preferences only had an area for encoder (i.e. export) nothing for import.

I'm actually not a Linux newbie, but I'm DEFINITELY no expert either... I'm trying to copy all my data(approx 50 GB) from a usb drive(western digital 250GB) with ntfs partition in one go... The problem is that it only fails for big transfers... works fine for smaller transfers like 1Gigs or less... I have just one internal hdd partitioned into two ext3 partitions.. so I have sda1(Primary.. mount pt /), sda2(swap) and sda3(mount pt /piyush)... The usb drive comes up as sdb(sdb1).. just has one ntfs partition... I've also installed the ntf-3g drivers.... but doesn't seem to work... I've also noticed that when the machine hangs and I try to shut down, it fails and I get a message again again... (sdb1- no sense detected) or something like this... don't remember the exact message... will post the exact one if no one is able to figure out what's wrong...

I want to import a key called PGP-public-key.asc, that is placed in the download folder to /etc/pki/rpm-gpg, but it fails. I tried both:
rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/PGP-public-key.asc
and
rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/
rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/home/my/Download/PGP-public-key.asc

I'm running a dual partitioned (Vista / Fedora 11 x86_64) Intel X25-M Mainstream SSD.
Whilst Vista boots in about 15 seconds, Fedora takes around twice as long; in fact far longer than Fedora 9 on my old Western Digital Raptor drive.
Is this to be expected, or might I have some sort of configuration problem? Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Cobbler import does not seem to work as described here:[URL]..I have selinux disabled.
Code:
# mount -o loop,ro Fedora-13-i686-Live.iso /mnt/dvd
# cobbler import --path="/mnt/dvd" --arch=i386 --name=fedora13task started: 2010-06-01_235629_import
task started (id=Media import, time=Tue Jun 1 23:56:29 2010)
running: rsync -a '/mnt/dvd/' /var/www/cobbler/ks_mirror/fedora13-i386 --exclude-from=/etc/cobbler/rsync.exclude --progress
[Code]...
The following are potential configuration items that you may want to fix:
1 : since iptables may be running, ensure 69, 80, and 25151 are unblocked
2 : debmirror package is not installed, it will be required to manage debian deployments and repositories
Restart cobblerd and then run 'cobbler sync' to apply changes. The listed ports are open in iptables, and I do not need to manage a debian deployment.

Just trying my first live upgrade but hit an issue with not being able to import the GPG key for FC14:
[root@jahama ~]# rpm --import https://fedoraproject.org/static/97A1071F.txt error: https://fedoraproject.org/static/97A1071F.txt: import failed. I downloaded the key to a file and had the same error so I know I haven't mistyped anything. What have I missed and what can I do to resolve it?

I've installed Fedora 13 and would like to find a way to import my pidgin accounts, data, and logs into empathy. The Empathy FAQ doesn't mention this, there's nothing in the Empathy help about it, and I've gone through every menu looking for anything like an "import" option and come up empty. I tried asking on irc.gimp.org#empathy but got no response there. I'm guessing that means there's no built-in upgrade path. But maybe somebody has a script that will do it? Or worst case, maybe someone could point me to instructions on how to manually convert the data?

how to model using blender(2.48) on fedora 9, and I'm having one small problem. I have been modeling on Tremulous on and off, but I have been having a recurring problem with vert counts that I have decided to address. I had planned to add plugin scripts to blender that will let me import/export md3 files. I was able to download the plugins in a zip file and I know where the blender scripts are located, but this is where I'm having problems. When I try to move the extracted plugins into the folder, I get a warning about me not having permission. I know I can get around the problem by using my root login command. What I don't know the command I need to use to move the plugins where they need to go.
