Debian Hardware :: Digital Cameras That Can Be Controlled?

Apr 3, 2010

Does anybody know of any digital cameras that can be controlled via Debian? I'm not speaking of a webcam but a digital camera, and I'd like to be able to send commands to the camera via usb; perhaps by means of a bash script that would take snapshots every x seconds for a total duration of y seconds.

Ubuntu :: Automount Stopped Working (digital Cameras, Usb Sticks)?

Oct 24, 2010

I'm running ubuntu 10.04 and suddenly when plugging my cameras or usb sticks, they don't automount anymore, but they did before. What changed is last days I tried to build and install nautilus-sendto manually from source, and it required dependencies including GTK+3.0 (unstable), I don't know what happened exactly or if my system is broken, because some of this packages built and installed fine and others failed. If someone wants to help with that to get my installation to its original state it would be awesome.I could mount my usb stick installing usbmount, it worked, but I didn't need this before. What I want now is to mount my cameras: here is the output for:

Code:
lsusb
gvfs-mount -l

Ubuntu :: Wireless Does Not Work + Printer Drivers So Buggy + MP3 Players And Digital Cameras Not Work?

Jul 7, 2010

I wanted some input on chronic problems with Ubuntu:

1. Why does wireless almost never work right on Ubuntu?

2. Why, when Ubuntu just decides to turn off my wireless card, can I not just turn it back on?

3. Why do tar balls almost never unpack right?

4. Why are printer drivers so buggy?

5. Why do my MP3 players and digital cameras not work with Ubuntu?

I spent 3 hours last night trying to unpack a tar.bz2 file so I can run my Ralink network card. It worked fine until my son unplugged my computer. Now my card is disconnected and it will not reconnect. When I check forums no one has a simple answer for something as simple as turning a network card back on. On my Apple, it's simple: click my wireless icon and hit "on." tell me an easy way to just turn my wireless card back on, it would renew my faith a little in Linux.

Debian Hardware :: Success Story - VHS Tapes To Digital Video Using Debian?

Feb 27, 2010

In a previous post I mentioned I planned to buy a Canopus ADVC 55 VHS to DV capture card (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=48224).

Now I have done that. And, it works like a charm using my 64-bit Debian Sid and Kdenlive! All my VHS will be saved for the future!A short HowTo: Plug in a SCART to composite adapter into the "TV out" on the VHS player. Plug in the three red/white/yellow composite RCA cables into the adapter and into Canopus ADVC 55.

Plug in a Firewire cable into the Canopus ADVC 55 and your Firewire card on your computer. Start the computer, start Kdenlive and click the connect button. Start the VHS player and click Play.

In Kdenlive and click the Record button, as fast as you can. Wait until tape is finished. Now you have a dv-file which is about 13GB per hour, so make sure you have the space on the hard drive. The dv file should then be stored as such, as the master backup. But, it is now easily converted to any other format.

I have too many home made movies to let them rot away as VHS. My previous attempt with the USB dongle only produces precompressed MPEG2 files which would have sucked. These DV files are uncompressed, take up a huge space, cannot be played as such, but! They are the raw material for any other format. If I'd like, can using Kdenlive readily make it FullHD with a few clicks.

Oh, and it works with vinyl records too!!! Then just use Audacity to edit them later. Don't buy a cheap USB dongle, buy a Canopus ADVC 55 or something similar. The quality is crisp!!!

Debian :: OS Does Not See Digital Camera Via USB

Mar 20, 2010

We've got one of those fancy, modern digital cameras and it's great for taking pictures, but I'd love to back those pictures up, too. When I connect the camera via its USB cable to my computer, the OS just doesn't "see" the camera/connection. Nothing shows up in fdisk -l. However, when I connect my mobile phone or USB HD via the same port, they show up in fdisk and can be mounted without any problem. The scary thing is that on my partner's laptop, running gNewSense (with Gnome), it (auto)mounts without any problems. The camera is a NIkon Coolpix L20 with an SD card.

Debian :: Western Digital My Book 1110 Not Mounting

Feb 8, 2011

Alright I am about to throw this western digital device out the door and drive over it. The back story is that I have done a Debian net install on an older tower PC laying around the office. I am going to use this tower as an FTP server to store and backup several other servers we have have. We also have an older Western Digital (WD) my book 1110 sitting here. I was planning on using the external storage as the repository as it is 1TB raided. Seems like a good plan, plug the device into the tower and instantly two new drives show up "External CD-ROM" drive: "WD Smartware" and then "My Book". When I click on the cd rom drive I get the .pdfs and executables that are stored on the device. However when I click on the "My Book" drive I get the message "Invalid mount option when attempting to mount the volume 'My Book'.".

Fedora :: Avi Imported From Cameras?

Aug 4, 2010

I recently made the switch from windows and mac system to fedora 13 64 bit kde, which has been a challenging 6 months, not having a IT background. Anyway, overall now that I am getting the hang of it I really like fedora 13 kde, nice job guys. I have one final obstacle remaining that I have not been able to figure out. I have the necessary rpms for video and sound. I am able to successfully copy video from DVD's and play them from hard drive without issue using VLC. However, when I try to import avi files from my camera's sd memory card, the videos always end up "corrupted" and when repaired do not play sound. Again, I can play AVI's from dvd's fine. Interestingly, I can take the same files from my fedora box and copy them onto a usb stick and transfer them into my mac and they play fine.

I suspect there is a codec issue possibly with VLC, but not sure. I also tried on the default player, but cannot remember the name of that right now and my wife is presently watching her Mary Kay dvd on it as it is hooked up to our TV . My video codec knowledge is pretty basic. Can someone point me in the right direction of what the problem might actually be, another post, something?

OpenSUSE Install :: Windows XP On Lvm Controlled Disk?

Dec 2, 2010

My system, OpenSuSE 11.3 (box2), has two physical disks in one volume group. One disk is almost empty. Unfortunately I need to install Windows XP as dual boot. (Yes, I know it would be easier to do this the other way around.) I plan to repartition the almost empty disk to make room for a Windows XP partition. The disk is NOT the primary master disk, because that's where my OpenSuSE 11.3 resides.

Will I break LVM if I install Windows XP? Will XP boot under lvm? Do I need to remove the disk from of the volume group before installing XP?

Software :: Multi User Web Controlled Jukebox?

Jun 16, 2010

I have a Linux (Fedora) server up in the attic which is connected to the whole-house speaker system. It has all my MP3s, etc. I would love to be able to control the sound output of that machine from multiple computers. Subsonic ([URL]... comes close -- it has the base functionality that I need (web control of server sound) However, I'm looking for something that handles the multi-user part better. Specifically, would like my users (children, wife) to have their own play lists and ratings. Would love if the tool could select from all of our favorites when I wanted to play music with dinner (including vetoes for the stuff some of ushate). And it doesn't seem like Subsonic allows rating at the song level.

It was very hard to install the driver (it's a generic card from DX with 4 inputs) but finally it worked.in Xawtv I see the camera, but I need a good software to capture it. I tried to install zoneminder but it's too difficult to me as a newbie in linux. I installed wxCam and it worked, but it's only for one camera, I have two. I need a software that can capture from both cameras in the same time and not so difficult to install like zoneminder.I want something that will just work, just install and run.

Hardware :: How To Stop Device From Being Controlled By Specific Driver

Apr 5, 2011

I am working on getting into driver development in Linux, I am developing a driver for the Hanvon GraphicPal drawing tablet.I have started writing a driver that actually detects the device when it is plugged in, so far thats all it does, it needs a lot more work. However, testing it is really hard because when I plug in the device normally, it gets picked up by usbhid or hidraw (not sure which), so the only way to get my driver to pick it up is to unload usbhid ("sudo rmmod usbhid") and then plug in the device. However, unloading usbhid kills my usb keyboard... which, as you can imagine, makes typing difficult, making it hard to develop drivers or even to reload usbhid. So is it possible to stop that specific device from being picked up by usbhid or hidraw and only by my driver?

General :: HD Cameras With Pan/Tilt/Zoom Features Supported?

How to connect HDMI camera to Linux? I have tried a few cameras such as the Bullet HD. I was never able to make it work in my CentOS, Fedora, I returned their product finally, it was a nightmare. Therefore instead of risking for next failure I am looking for a definitive answer on this, so that no driver issues arise under Linux and finally allow me not to use Windows or Mac anymore. Has anyone ever had success with making a very very good quality camera work in Linux, such as for example this one? Which HD cameras are there for Linux? There should be no driver issues and they should also allow me to perform pan/tilt/zoom actions using USB, Firewire or the S-Video interface.

Ubuntu Networking :: Get The Asus N13 WiFi To Be Controlled By The Network Manager App

Mar 11, 2011

I have eventually (a week's work) got my Ubuntu 10.04 to recognise my Asus N13 WiFi dongle (had to compile the source from Ralink with the "y" against the two things it tells you to if you want network manager to work (source that came with dongle wouldn't compile) and then set up rules (for some reason the driver - rt2870sta - wouldn't recognise the dongle until the rule about the vendor and product ID was in place; and the drivers that come with Ubuntu wouldn't recognise it even with the rule in place)).

Big thank you to chilli555 for all of the posts that got me this far.I would like to use the Network Manager app that comes with Ubuntu, to control the dongle. At the moment it will aknowledge when the driver has been loaded (have to do a modprobe), but does not "see" any of the many WiFi routers around my house, so I can't click on one to select one.

My only guess on this is that, to get the dongle to work I copied the config file that is part of the driver source files into /etc/Wireless/RT2870, and this is getting in the way. However, I have tried removing it and the network manager still doesn't work. Or is it because the network manager needs the dongle to be called "wlan0" and it's called "ra0"? If so, can you aliase this?

Ubuntu Servers :: Allow Users To Upload And Run Scripts In Controlled Environment?

I am setting up a small competition for a forum where there are a set of programming tasks to complete (in various languages). At the end of the allocated time, the fastest program that successfully completes the task wins.I would like to set up a server similar to the way the Google AI challenge works, where users can upload code to the server via an html page and the code is executed and profiled on the server. The problem is obviously security... so... how can I configure my server so that the uploaded scripts are run in a completely jailed environment and do not have access to anything outside their folder and cannot execute any commands on the server? The chain of events looks like this: User writes script on local machine -> user zips script -> user browses to server html page -> user uploads script -> script is compiled and executed on the server -> user is shown output from script
