Ubuntu Multimedia :: Convert A Digital Sound Stream To Analogue Before It Is Sent To The Hdmi Out?
Jan 13, 2011
how to have alsa convert a digital sound stream to analogue before it is sent to the hdmi out? I would like to modify asound.conf. I do not have gnome as a desktop so I need to manually input the changes to asound.conf. The reason I ask is. I have sound going out of my acer revo to both spdif and hdmi. The spdif goes to my receiver and I want digital passthrough for that. The hdmi goes to my tv and I need it to be analouge before it gets to the tv. Right now, I get passthrough to both the spdif and hdmi. (the tv is all static) I want to have alsa convert the signal for the hdmi output only.

I went out to buy myself an nVidia G210 yesterday in order to play Quake Wars. I installed the 260.19 (latest from RPMFusion) nVidia drivers and 3D effects worked along with the game. What didn't work is the sound. I am using an HDMI cable to connect my monitor to the computer. It seems as though ALSA is not letting the digital stream through because when I play an audio file in Rhythmbox, PulseAudio Volume Control shows that the speakers are blasting music. This is strange, since nothing is coming out.

I currently have a Monitor which accepts VGA, DVI and HDMI input, it is connected to my PC with a VGA Cable and my X-Box with an HDMI Cables, to switch between them all I have to do is click a button on the monitor to switch the input source.I was wondering if it is possible to get the HDMI stream while the VGA is connected and push that to the monitor in the form of a Window on the screen.Does anyone know of an application to do this, or if it is even remotely possible?EDIT: I just noticed VLC Media Player has the option to stream my desktop, would it be possible to use that to stream from the HDMI input too?

I'm using a terratec EWX 24 96 sound card with ubuntu studio, and I have sound with the digital output, I have no sound with the digital input.
I had sound with the same configuration in Windows XP, and all the hardware is ok.
I think I have no sound at all, with Ardour or Rosegarden, that's like if the digital input was not here in jack.

My sound was working, but I got a new SPDIF cable, so I switched it to digital. It worked fine. But then I restarted and now it's gone.
aplay -l tells me I have no soundcard but lspci -v lists
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 836c
Flags: bus master, slow devsel, latency 64, IRQ 16
Memory at f9ff4000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel
Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel
So my soundcard is there.

Here is the update to the old thread that somehow disappeared "HOWTO: A52 Encoded 5.1 Surround Sound Awesomeness with PulseAudio and ALSA on Hardy" thread (archived here). See also this bug report.There are two steps here: add the a52 plugin, and tell pulseaudio to use it.
Step 1:
Go to a terminal and do the following:
Code:
sudo bash
echo "pcm.a52 {[code]....
Pulse should come back on its own unless you disabled autospawn.Now pulse should be aware of your digital surround output. Go to System -> Preferences -> Sound. Click on the "Hardware" tab and change the profile to one of the 'Digital Surround 5.1' profiles. Play some sound (I like to test with www.pandora.com) and enjoy!If it doesn't show up, it probably means that alsa didn't create it correctly. To test if alsa sees the a52 device, type:
Code:
aplay -D a52:0
If it errors out (audio open error: No such file or directory) then that means it did not like your asound.conf settings. You might learn something by looking at the output of 'sudo alsa reload' or just 'aplay'.[code].....

Alright, just installed maverick, got the sound to work great on the 7.1 with pulseaudio. works great in movies, and everything else just wonderfully. the only thing i am stumped by is how to get the sound to loop from my digital input on my soundcard to my analog speakers also on the same soundcard. i know the sound feed works on the input as the makeshift VU meter/bar on my digital input in the sound preferences moves, but i can't get the sound to actually come through on my speakers.

I have an HP 8510w laptop and I run ubuntu 10.04 out of an external harddrive.
I have no problem getting video over hdmi using the latest proprietary nvidia drivers however I cannot get sound through the HDMI cable.
I have read around without being able to find a solution.
Running "aplay -l" shows only my intel sound card and also there is no hdmi sound interface in the sound preferences (Only the normal output interface).
I am using the latest proprietary nvidia drivers (Believe it to be 1.95) and the graphics card is a Quadro FX 570.
how I can get sound out to work via the hdmi cable?

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10. Everything is working fine except I have no sound. When I use the command 'aplay -D hw:0,0 somefile.wav', I can get sound through headphones attached to the headphone jack. But I can't get any sound through the speakers. This is a dual boot desktop and the sound works fine under Windows, so no problems with hardware. The PC monitor is connected through a hdmi cable and I would need sound through the speakers. I recently purchased a new video card a GeForce 550 Ti, but I haven't been able to get sound working over HDMI.
I'm running the latest version of Ubuntu (11.04) and have installed the proprietary drivers through Additional Drivers.
Code:
The card is being picked up by alsa and I've configured Ubuntu to use HDMI in sound preferences:
aplay -l:
Code:
When I check alsamixer this is what I see:
ALSA reports that version 1.0.23 is installed, although I thought 11.04 came with version 1.0.24?
cat /proc/asound/version:
Code:
I've tried purging ALSA and reinstalling it but it didn't help. Is there anything I can do? Does anyone know if this card is supported by ALSA properly yet? I hate the thought of having to go to Windows to get this working

I am having trouble getting sound over hdmi with my Nvidia MCP7A HDMI. The strange thing is that everything works fine in a Live disc, but once I do a fresh install of that Live disc I get no sound, even though my configuration is exactly the same (as far as I can tell). I've checked the little things like alsamixer volumes, aplay -l, etc etc. Everything looks good to me. I can reproduce on multiple TVs so its not the receiver. Video drivers are the same in both live version and installed. aplay -l detects my device. sound/pci/hda/patch_nvhdmi.c already has my correct vendor id in it. Perhaps the following info can figure out what my installed environment is lacking.

I can't get HDMI sound reliably when using Ubuntu. The strange thing is, if I repeatedly reboot the computer, eventually the sound will work. This can take anything up to 10 reboots. Once working, it will keep on working as long as the machine is not rebooted or shut down. HDMI sound works fine under Windows.
aplay -l will only list the Intel (analogue and S/PDIF) hardware, not the Nvidia, even when it is working. Selecting between analogue and digital output under Sound Preferences has no effect on the HDMI either way.

Video is ok, but never any sound. I went through and made sure the HDMI is selected as the audio device and I upgraded to the latest driver binary.
HDMI sound works without the ATI proprietary driver installed, but the needed resolution is not available and the picture overlaps the edges on my 32" LCD. At least I know it is not a hardware issue. ALSA is loaded and selected as the sound manager, but the volume controls don't appear in the ALSA slider console.
I tested the cable and display on another computer. I am using a new Gigabyte GA-MA78LM-SH2, it is the integrated video.

I was hoping that upgrading to 10.04 would fix my problems with sound and HDMI but alas it doesn't. I have an HP dv7 that I wish connect via an HDMI cable to my HDTV and play things like Hulu, Boxee, etc. with the sound coming out of my home theater system. I know that the hardware is capable of doing this because I have Windows 7 installed in a dual boot and it has no problems with pumping sound down the HDMI channel.
I've upgraded to Alsa 1.0.23 freshly compiled. With 1.0.23 I see HDMI settings in Pulse Audio Volume Control. However if I start say VLC and play a video, check pavucontrol and make sure the Playback is set to the HDMI channel. I can hook up the HDMI cable and I can see the video playing - but no audio. I've been in and out of all kinds of things like alsamixer, gnome-alsamixer, sound preferences, etc. and I've toggled things on and off in an attempt to get HDMI sound working but nothing works.
In alsamixer if I hit f6 I see my 0 card as HDA Intel and my 1 card as NDA NVidia. If I select NVidia I see only S/PDIF, S/PDIF 1, S/PDIF 2, S/PDIF 3. I can only mute or unmute these. I've tried both - nothing works. Let me know what sort of output/info you need and I'll post it. Here's some info I've seen others post:

I'm having a bit of trouble getting sound to work over HDMI with my GT240 card. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (upgraded from 10.04) on kernel 2.6.35-23. I can get sound over HDMI by using the following commands:
Code:
speaker-test c2 -D plughw:0,7
Code:
aplay -Dplughw:0,7 track06.mp3
However, I get no sound from normal applications (Totem, Rhythmbox, flash, etc). It's also worth noting that I can get sound from plughw:0,7, plughw:0,8 and plughw:0,9, but if I use plughw:0,3 there's no sound. I checked in alsamixer and all four channels are unmuted. I followed the instructions on this guide to get this far.

I have a Giada Slim-N20 running XBMC-Live 10.1 (Ubuntu v.10.04.1). It is hooked up by HDMI to my two-speaker TV. I don't think XBMC is my problem, however. Out of the box, XBMC supports sound over HDMI (if you tell it to use it), but when I try to run ZSNES, I only get sound through the headphone jack on the side. Now, the one problem with XBMC is that menu sounds go through the default device (i.e. the headphone jack) rather than the device selected in its settings (in my case, the HDMI port). In order to fix that problem, my .asoundrc looks like this:
Code:
pcm.!default {
type plug
slave {
pcm "hw:1,3"
}
}
Unfortunately, this does not fix ZSNES for some reason. Even worse, I no longer get sound through the headphone jack. What does fix ZSNES, however, is this strange hack that has been making the rounds on the XBMC forums. First, you download a modified version of HDA-Intel.conf found here. It appears to route everything through pcm.!remap-surround71. Then, you use this asound.conf:
Code:
pcm.!hdmi-remap {
type asym
playback.pcm {
[code]....
This almost fixes everything. Unfortunately, when I try playing a video with AC3/Dolby Digital, I get a screechy, garbled mess. Videos with mp3 and DTS work fine, however. what the asound files or the modified HDA-Intel.conf are trying to do. My guess is that something with the 7.1 mapping is screwing up AC3. And my hunch is that such a hack is way too complicated just to tell ZSNES to use the HDMI port. And, yes, ZSNES is instructed to use SDL or ALSA (neither appears to make a difference).

I was running Ubuntu 9.04 and just upgraded to 9.10 recently. I see many others are having problems with their sound. I too do not have sound. I did get sound running briefly with an Alsa update, but it was muffled. In trying many other fixes, I again have no sound and can not resolve it. I am thinking of burning a new cd and doing a fresh install and starting over.
My lap top is an MSI GT725 US model with an HD4850 mobility graphics card. I dual boot between Vista 32 bit and Ubuntu.
Has anyone else had any luck getting the Realtek ATI sound working in 9.10?
