Software :: Touchscreen - Calibrate SH Cannot Load Helvetica Font
May 27, 2010
I've installed in Lenny with the 2.6.26-2-686 kernel, the xorg-xserver-input-evouch package, I've edited the xorg.conf, as described in this howto [URL]. It works to the where I am trying to start the calibrate.sh script. When I start it, the X screen pops up, but in the console I get a message, that failed loading font '*-helvetica-*-12-*'. After that the calibration tool dies.

I have an eGalax touchscreen which I installed using the xserver-xorg-input-evtouch package. Now touching the screen makes the mouse pointer move in all sorts of random directions.
What I want, of course, is for the mouse pointer to move to the point where I touched the screen. Typically this is called 'calibration'. Maybe there's a program to run or something, but I can't find it. how do I calibrate my touch screen?
I'm running Jaunty 9.04 so there is no 'System -> Administration -> Calibrate Touchscreen' program.

I don't know too much about the licensing issues surrounding fonts, but I would like to install Helvetica on my machine for my own personal use. I haven't been able to find a whole lot about this on Google. There are a lot of Helvetica alternatives out there, but I want Helvetica itself.

I recently upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4, KDE 4.6.1. I have /home on a separate partition and it was unchanged in the upgrade. If I open Personal Settings-Application Appearance-Fonts, one of my font choices is Adobe Helvetica. If I open Gimp, open a new file, I can select Adobe Helvetica as a font and insert text in my new file. If I open Inkscape (svg drawing application), I can select Adobe Helvetica as a font, text is inserted but when I reselect it for editing, the window indicates that the font is just Sans. (Inkscape has some font selection wierdness, but keep reading). If I open LibreOffice, Adobe Helvetica is NOT on the font list for selection.
If I run
Code:
fc-list |grep Adobe
Adobe Courier:style=Bold
Adobe Utopia:style=Italic
Adobe Times:style=Bold
Adobe Helvetica:style=Bold Oblique
Adobe New Century Schoolbook:style=Bold Italic
Adobe Utopia:style=Bold
Adobe Utopia:style=Regular
Adobe Helvetica:style=Oblique
Adobe Courier:style=Oblique
Adobe New Century Schoolbook:style=Italic
Adobe New Century Schoolbook:style=Bold
Adobe Utopia:style=Bold Italic
Adobe Times:style=Regular
Adobe Times:style=Bold Italic
Adobe Times:style=Italic
Adobe Helvetica:style=Bold
Adobe Helvetica:style=Regular
Adobe New Century Schoolbook:style=Regular
Adobe Courier:style=Regular
Adobe Courier:style=Bold Oblique
However, I cannot find any files named Adobe Helvetica or Helvetica in /usr/share/fonts/* and I am not really sure it is installed. My suspicion is that the upgrade process preserving /home has the system looking at some old information, and that gimp and Inkscape are doing font replacement, while LibreOffice is doing it's own thing. What is the best procedure to refresh the system info on what fonts really are loaded?

I am running the 32 bit version of Fedora 14. I have a provided program (not part of the Linux system) that notes "Cannot open font 9x15" and then crashes when it tries to do graphics. I have checked by using -fn in xterm and there is no 9x15 font. This agrees with xlsfonts. How do I get the 9x15 font installed on this system.

I am running a PHP script using the GD library on a Linux server. When I try to load a font using PHP's imageloadfont(), GD replies with:
Code:
gd warning: product of memory allocation multiplication would exceed INT_MAX, failing operation gracefully
Linux kernel is 2.6, PHP version is 5.2.9 and GD is 2.0.34.
I have tried several different font but all have the same issue. Does anyone know what the error means?

I have F14 x86_64 installation on my laptop. I once used latex vary well. After recent update of the system, there seems to be a latex font problem. When I ran xdvi, the dvi window flashed once and disappeared immediately.
The error in the terminal is:
Code:
$ xdvi ms
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset
Error: Aborting: no fontset found
I have xorg-x11-font-utils, xorg-x11-fonts-misc, xorg-x11-fonts-ISO8859-1-75dpi, and xorg-x11-fonts-ISO8859-1-100dpi installed. I then ran:
Code:
# yum install xorg-x11-fonts-ISO8859*
to install some extra fonts. But the problem remained. What shall I do?

I've installed Fontmatrix. It deactivates fonts correctly, but when I try to reactivate them, it does not do so, and gives this error message: "Fontmatrix has been unable to load the font in file /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-liberation/LiberationMono-Bold.ttf. Please check missing files." It is still possible to reinstall them using Gnome Font Viewer. Does anyone know what to do about this?

Since upgrading to the latest kernel the other day, I get on bootup the following message
Warning calibrate APIC_Clock: The APIC timer calibration may be wrong.
My system clock runs way too slowly and after I leave my virtual machine turned on over night, the clock is way behind...I have even had it set to sync with NTP.. how to correct this? Resetting the clock in the GUI does not help...
Very annoying because the clock is always wrong timing...I did not get this warning message before the 10.1 kernel upgrade...

I have a macbook pro with an Nvidia 9600m gt card. default colors look nothing like they do on my mac. I would like to calibrate the colors. How would one do this in Ubuntu? I have looked around and seen Xgamma, Argyll, and display calibrator. These programs do not work, mainly the display calibrator gui. I see Nvidia xserver has a color correction function, and that looks good. However, how do you use it? I can tweak colors but they end up looking incorrect still.
I am looking for a detailed step by step tutorial about how to calibrate a monitor, which are aimed at newbies who don't have much prior knowledge. On the mac it was incredibly simple; anything like this on Ubuntu?

I use many different terminals during the course of my working day and frequently have to adjust my interaction to each unique type. For example, when interacting with bash via my work gnome-terminal I can use ctrl-arrow to skip over words, like most test editors allow. On the other hand, my xterm at home can't interpret this action and spits out a chunk of binary gibberish whenever I use this command.
I think that the behaviour of bash is consistent, it's just that the xterms treat keyboard events differently, depending on their configuration. Can someone confirm for me that this correct?, if yes, how can I calibrate the terminal to treat my keystrokes in the manner I desire?

I have an HP Pavilion tx2000 tablet, wich is working perfectly in Ubuntu 10.04. The touch and the stylus works out of box, and i'm using the script that Favux has posted to rotate my screen and i've installed the wacomrotate daemon, wich is working too. Now, I've two questions: How to calibrate it? The stylus is ok, but the touch isn't calibrated. In Karmic, I was using wacomcpl and xsetwacom, but neither of them detect my tablet now (in 9.10, Hal was used to detect the tablet, now it's xserver-xorg-input-wacom).
[code]...
It's possible to set up the automatic screen rotation, like in Windows (the screen rotates automaticaly in tablet position)?

All the power google turn up just stuff f relating how to install microsoft fonts or do stuf on MikTeX.
I CANNOT USE XeLaTeX!!! I use pstricks and the font must be available in plain TeX! Otherwise my document looks inconsistent!

Most of my work happens in a terminal, so I need a clear, readable font. I've settled a while ago on Terminus [URL]..., which works wonders for me. I added XTerm*faceName : Terminus in my ~/.Xdefaults, and I do get the Terminus font. Unfortunately, a lot of Unicode glyphs are missing (mathematical symbols, greek and hebrew letters), displaying as little square blocks instead.
If I remove the faceName entry, the default configuration seems able to display most of the glyphs (including math, greek, hebrew, runic, and whatever else), but the default font is much harder to read.
A google search hints that it should be possible to use Terminus as the default font, and fallback to (an)other one(s) for missing glyphs, but provides no further explanation. I've seen documentation that recommends Bitstream Vera Sans as a fallback, but it lacks the glyphs I need too; I don't know how to identify the default font used by xterm either, I had a look at /usr/share/X11/app-defaults/XTerm, but all I can find are generic references to old pre-fontconfig font names.
Using Gentoo Linux, fontconfig and xterm are up to date, USEs trutype and unicode enabled, X.Org server 1.6.
Edit: I alternate between Ratpoison, Awesome and XMonad, without a desktop environment.

that's what i get on one of my 2 new lucid boxen when i try to run twm (1:1.0.4-2ubuntu2) inside vnc4server 4.1.1+xorg4.3.0-37ubuntu2). any idea how to fix this? the xfonts packages are installed, and no problem with twm on the console. and no problem with twm inside vnc4server on the other lucid box. both were installed via netboot (minimal), both were fleshed out with apt-get lubuntu-desktop, though there were presumably inconsequential differences, on the one that works fine:
Code:
apt-get install twm
apt-get install vnc4server xvnc4viewer
apt-get install lxde-core
apt-get install lubuntu-desktop

Actually I want to log a bug but I don't really know what package to log it against. The problem is that by default Pango is choosing the AR PL UMing CN as the font to render Japanese text when the current font doesn't have Japanese glyphs. But AR PL UMing CN is a Chinese font, so Chinese glyphs for kanji characters (e.g., 覚) are displayed. This is jarring and confusing for Japanese readers.
This situation mostly arises when you have mixed English and Japanese text. Some applications (for instance Firefox) will allow you to select a font for Asian text. Thus if the text contains only Asian characters it will use the font you select, rather than what Pango would have selected. But if it is a mix of English and Japanese, you end up with the wrong glyphs.
Other environments (like gnome-terminal, or a gedit) have difficulties as well. Since the primary interface requires mono spaced roman characters you run into difficulty selecting fonts. Most Japanese fonts only have proportional roman characters. This means that if use a nice roman font and use Japanese text (for instance file names), you end up with Chinese glyphs. What I want is a mechanism that will work across all of Gnome for selecting the font I want to use for Chinese characters. That way I can choose either Japanese or Chinese glyphs.
I realize this is low priority. It only bugs me a little, but many of my Japanese colleagues are put off from using Ubuntu because they are confused by the Chinese glyphs that pop up on my screen from time to time. As I said, I'd like to file a bug, but I'm not sure against what package...

In all previous versions of KDE I had Console8x16 set as KDE font for all cases (Settings->Appearance->Fonts). After tonight upgrade, this (only!) font is not working. I can see it in font manager, I can set it in ...Appearance->Fonts, but actually remains default font. Two of about 30 attempts somehow (can not reproduce) succeeded to set "console 12" font, but it disappeared after restart.
1. What can be the problem in 4.4?
2. In /usr/share/fonts tere are 3 files named console8x16.pcf, console8x8.pcf and console9x15.pcf, but in the font list in Appearance->Fonts I can see only 2 - one named "Console" (seems to be 8x16 and "console" (8x8). File 9x15 does not appear at all. Why?
Last results of attempts: cannot use console font in part of areas, while part works OK. For example: kdevelop editor, kmail message body text works OK. But kmail other parts - does not. The most interesting is that although setting the kmail body message text to console displays the message body text correctly (with console font), but the example message in "Configure kmail" dialogue "The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog" is displayed in the default font, as if there is no console font!

You have probably seen the TV shows and films with the law enforcement agency, or the team at "Leverage" have a large screen with other side screens.
I don't have a holographic display, or even a 60" touchscreen, but I do have a TV, and a couple of computers running 10.10 and 11.04.
What I would like to do, using a mouse instead of a touchscreen, is "push" photos, videos, or dossiers on enemy agents to another screen or phone.
I would imagine it to be something along the lines of hot zones on the desktop, so that if I flick an item to, say, the right of the screen, it will leave my desktop and pop up on the desktop of the (networked, but separate and different) computer to my right, and if I drag / flick an item to the top centre it will Bluetooth it to my phone (which I'll set up to automatically accept any files from "my.desktop.homelan".
I had something a little similar with, I think, Compiz, in that if I flicked an item to the right it would dump it onto virtual desktop 2 (of four horizontal ones).
What search terms would I use in Google or Ubuntu Help to get me started? I can compile, but I'd rather not, as I'm not very good at it, and I can edit .cfg files as long as there are plain English descriptors ("Enable_Feature_Foo=1" "Fave_Place=/home/Me/fave/" etc).

The problem is the touchscreen is acting like a mouse. The cursor doesn't go to where I touch, it just moves around just like a normal mouse.
This Xorg.0.log shows this about the TouchScreen
Code:
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "USB Touchscreen 595a:0001" (type: TOUCHPAD)
(**) USB Touchscreen 595a:0001: (accel) keeping acceleration scheme 1
(**) USB Touchscreen 595a:0001: (accel) filter chain progression: 2.00
(**) USB Touchscreen 595a:0001: (accel) filter stage 0: 20.00 ms
[Code]....
the lsmod output tells me that the usbtouchscreen isnt being used by anything.
