Open synaptic. Type in the word "Game". Then you have to scroll down through the list of results and mark each one, individually. Is there any way that I can simply mark ALL the results of the search? There is an "Unmark all" button. Can we get a "Mark all" button? It would have to mark only those packages that currently appear in the right hand box.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just installed OpenSUSE. I've never used it before. I typically use apt-get to install applications when using Ubuntu; so I'd like to use it with OpenSUSE. I've read some documentation saying that I need to go to YaST -> Software and search for "apt" or "synaptic." However, both of these searches yield no results. Additionally, using the Software Manager to search for these yields no results. What can I do? When I search for something in OpenSUSE and there are 0 results, I get HTML bold tags around the search criteria where it says there are no results (as in, I can actually see the code for the bold tag).

View 5 Replies View RelatedUpon a while of searching, I think I failed to find the correct terms and I'm posting here. I often use mlocate to search for files. For example, if I say

I'll get two results:

Now if I want to open one of them, I'll have to either open Acroread and browse to their locations. Or select and copy, and call acroread in terminal like

This is tedious to me. I'm thinking of a way of quickly open its search results, I've tried pipes like this but it doesn't work:

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 11.4. I've played with different versions of Picasa, installing the Linux version via Ubuntu Software Center and also using Wine. At a certain point I had several versions of the application installed and things were getting. When I search for Picasa in the Unity application search field (clicking the button with the dot in the centre at the top left of my screen) I got several results for Picasa, some of which when clicked would start Picasa and some which wouldn't. When I remove all versions of Picasa both from Wine and native I still get some results for Picasa which don't start Picasa when clicked.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just upgraded to 11.04 and really like it so far, everything seems to be running smoothly and I had no issues apart from a broken Emerald which I removed (and installed compiz-gnome and then made gtk-window-decorator the default, which fixed Unity segfaulting on Emerald).
My problem now is that when I use the Unity dash to search for something, it takes a while to search and then finds nothing. I'm pretty sure I should have things like "text editor", "gimp", "update manager", so I would think this is some manner of bug.
In addition to that, the following buttons don't do anything if I click on them:
- Media Apps
- Internet Apps
- More Apps
- Find Files
I just upgraded my computer to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid. Whenever I open Synaptic Package Manager it opens normally. If I type into the "Quick search" box, when I try to type in a word as soon as I type the second letter Synaptic immediately closes. However, if I click on the full "Search" button, this function works as it should. I just can't use Quick Search. Synaptic closes every time.
I uninstalled synaptic from a terminal by typing [CODE] apt-get remove synaptic. Then I reinstalled using [CODE] apt-get install synaptic. Reinstalling did not fix the problem. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?
I have noticed when using Synaptic the user can point the search function to "Look In" description && name, dependencies, version etc. Can I search through a particular Section? E.g. I want to filter out all results from all sections except System Administration...
P.S. searching LQ reveals the nearest newest post, that may have never been resolved.

I'm timing how long it takes to run a command foo. I'm looking to append the results from the time command to a file, and discard the results from the foo command. I tried the following, but it didn't do what I want:
$ time ./foo > /dev/null >> output_from_time_command.txt
i guess this is an installation issue as i am newish to Linux and got a F14 laptop from a used/refurb store... Anyway it seem i have difficulty with getting GTK running or maybe it is WGET...?
i did manage to install apt-get and was able to run synaptics ... but now whenever i try to run synaptics it flashes the interface and crashes. i tried apt-get search wget and it says invalid operation search. i tried apt cache wget and get a crash box in the upper right corner... i tried apt-get gtk+extra-2.1.2-4.fc14 and it says invalid operation gtk...
All of which is frustrating my attempts to get the GTK interface to J working. Their script uses WGET which i also cannot get.
I'm trying to find a good desktop search tool. Beagle is dead, Recoll and Strigi are KDE, and Tracker is not many features (can't even search Thunderbird 3). Do I miss something? Is desktop search on Linux dead? Should I use Google Desktop Search instead

Even as root when running Nautlis, it won't let me mark as executable, when the file in question is in a partition that is not / - that is, on my win7 partition. I check the box, and it unchecks immedietly. It has no problem doing so when it's on /. What do I do to make it happen?

I can't type an exclamation mark with my keyboard. I can type other symbols that require the shift key (~ @ # $, etc) but Shift + 1 does not give an exclamation point. Here's the intriguing part: following a tip from another thread, I changed my Visual Effects setting (System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects tab) from the default "Normal" to the setting "None". Immediately after doing this, I was able to type exclamation points. Problem solved, right?
experiment to make sure the Visual Effects setting was really the culprit. So I flipped my Visual Effects back to the default "Normal", and sure enough, I stopped being able to type exclamation marks. Having verified the (apparent) cause of the issue, I tried my solution of changing the Visual Effects to "None". Of course the "solution" didn't work this time (so much for my great idea) and I am left unable to type an exclamation point.
I have concluded that the fault must lie within my user's configuration (I can type as many exclamations as I want when logged in as other users).

In Xubuntu, I can't seem to mark files as executable. I go into the properties, but there is no option to do this. Is there a way to mark .exe and .jar files as executable in XFCE?

I then realised the GUIs sucked, so I removed them. Now the computer janitor wants to remove virtuallbox, svn, and who knows what else all because of those stupid packages! how to mark certain packages as deliberatley installed so the computer janitor will take them and their dependencies off the list and let me clean things up?

View 2 Replies View RelatedA new directory (Desktop with uppercase D) appeared in my /home/mark dir and my icons disappeared. Upon further looking, I see there are 2 directory's in my home, one called desktop (all lower case,) the other is Desktop with uppercase D. I copied the stuff from desktop to Desktop and my icons are back. Where is this information kept so I can fix it back. I guess I need to tell Linux to use desktop, but I don't know where that is.
