Software :: OpenOffice.org Broken - Can't Access My Spreadsheets

Nov 23, 2010

I installed OOo on Slackware linux 13.1 recently. It worked fine until yesterday when I tried to open up an xls file which I often use, and I was presented with a "filter" dialogue with loads of options but no explanation what they were for. I tried several of them but nothing seemed to make any difference - the file was unopenable. I found a suggestion online that I should try to delete my configuration file ~/.openoffice, which I did. Unfortunately now whenever I open OOo I get a smaller dialogue box with some gibberish in it. It's some crazy wingdings font or something, and I have no idea what it's trying to tell me.

Anyway now I can't access any of my files. I have tried reinstalling OOo and deleting my config file again, neither does anything - i'm always getting the nonsense dialogue box. I have even installed OOo on a virtual WinXP and the same happened there (the 'filter' dialogue not the gibberish font)Has OOo somehow managed to corrupt ALL my files?

Ubuntu :: Looking For OpenOffice Alternative For Spreadsheets

Sep 12, 2010

So I'm trying to create a spreadsheet that operates in hexadecimal, binary (maybe), and decimal, for fairly large values. While openoffice does handle hexadecimal fine, if you convert it to decimal (at least so far, if anybody has a more naturalistic way of doing this, that would be great), it can't seemingly handle how large the values are, and truncates. So, if possible, I would like an open source alternative that is perhaps more robust than OpenOffice. Hopefully one exists.

Ubuntu Installation :: OpenOffice And QuickStarter - Broken Packages

Feb 5, 2011

Update Manager tells me it has updates. So I close what I am doing with VirtualBox and a Windows Client and I tell the Update Manager to go ahead. But it stops, says I've got OpenOffice and QuickStarter both running. Not so, at last not to my knowledge. I try again, and it tells me I have a broken package, and to use the 'Broken' filter to find it. Where is the 'Broken' filter? And even if I work that out, what should I do about a "broken" package? So I look online. Only references to "Broken" packages are with respect to Windows. Windows is a shut down client, and VirtualBox has been shut down.

So I try the recovery mode on a reboot. This reports I have 15 broken packages, all to do with OpenOffice. I select Fix Broken Packages, and it keep stopping to tell me that OpenOffice and QuickStarter are both running, and I need to deal with that. How? A restart and effort to fix broken packages did no good. I look online again, and this time I run down where someone writes you can follow a link, and what you get there will do the trick. Only the link goes nowhere, so it has been moved or deleted.

Debian Multimedia :: OpenOffice Font Anti Aliasing Broken After Upgrade To Lenny

Sep 14, 2010

I'm trying to upgrade a headless terminal server like box from Etch to Lenny. Users log in to this box using a GoGlobal client and use applications such as OpenOffice and Iceweasel. Because of the ended support for Etch we want to upgrade this machine to Debian Lenny as soon as possible and in order to save time we decided to dist-upgrade instead of installing a new machine. I've done this upgrade in a test environment and everything is working as expected except for OpenOffice, which seems broken after the upgrade:

The problem seems to be caused by the anti aliasing features of OpenOffice and disabling these features in the options panel (Extra -> Options -> OpenOffice.org View -> Screen font anti aliasing) fixes the UI somewhat:

However, as can be seen in the last screenshot, disabling anti aliasing makes the whole thing look terrible. I've searches the net for solutions such as this one but so far I've not been able to fix this. Is there anyone who can point me towards what has changed in the way fonts are rendered since Lenny and what might cause this breakage for OpenOffice? Other applications such as Iceweasel work perfectly and look better then before.

They are all given different filenames bob_smells.xls, nancy_smells_worse.xls etc. I was wondering using Linux (LUbuntu specifically), would it be possible to combine all of these worksheets into one document, with each of the seperate files becoming a tab / sheet within the one file (And the name reflecting the original name of the document)?

Ubuntu :: Converting MS Access To Openoffice Base?

Sep 23, 2010

Everywhere I read, this seems to come up as a very difficult thing. Just want to record how I did it.

In Access, export the table to an Excel Spreadsheet. Using Openoffice, open the Spreadsheet, but save as an Openoffice (.ods) spreadsheet. ( Note - According to the Base help files, if you import an Excel Spreadsheet, it is read-only)

Open Base and Create a database. No tables, no nothing, just create. Now Open this and and also Open the spreadsheet. Select all the data in the spreadsheet, 'copy' it, and in the Database tables area, 'paste' it. I had problems in that it wanted to create a primary key, so added an extra field.

I then went into the database design view, right click on the appropriate field to make that the primary key, and remove the primary key from the unwanted field.

Delete the excess column. This is just for a single flat table, with no linking to other tables. I hope that this helps someone. I did it for a membership database table, and have been able to replicate the query to filter for the Snailmail folks (Those that did not have an email address in the table). Still trying to figure out how to do an envelopes report though.

11.04 has finally fixed my Screen Resolution problems. Yippee. But now the Internet access has broken, again rendering my Ubuntu installation mostly useless. Yes, it tells me Wired internet disconnected, after repeated attempts to gain access to the internet over a LAN cable. I have tried everything to get it to work, even manually entering all the info to allow access to my router. But still No. What is even more frustrating is that the internet worked fine on the Live CD, but not on the final installation.

Fedora :: Can't Start OpenOffice.org 3.2.0/3.2.1 On 13

Jul 14, 2010

Not talking about the repo version here, that one runs great. But for various reasons we NEVER use the repo-Version on any Linux distro in our company, mainly because we want all users to always have the exact same tools available no matter what computer they use, and the repo versions differ significantly from the stock openoffice.org version and from each other, not only visually. The stock 3.2.0 runs great on various versions of SuSE, openSUSE and CentOS on various computers, but fails to load on Fedora 13. Here's what happens, with both 3.2.0 and 3.2.1: when I first start it I see the splash screen, then the "Welcome to OpenOffice.org" dailog that appears on first start and asks for my details. I click on next and the application segfaults:

martin/mlaptop$ soffice
/usr/bin/soffice: line 127: 11037 Segmentation fault (core dumped) "$sd_prog/$sd_binary" "$@"

Using the repo version is not an option and company policy, so it's out.

I've tried to install openoffice, but I can't get it to run. Unlike installing a program in windows, it appears there is a lot more involved in getting a downloaded .tar/.bz2/whatever they are to load and become a program.

I've tried borrowing a book on Linux, but I'm lost with that too as it doesn't tell me how to add/remove programs let alone get them running in the first place.
