Fedora :: Can't Start OpenOffice.org 3.2.0/3.2.1 On 13

Jul 14, 2010

Not talking about the repo version here, that one runs great. But for various reasons we NEVER use the repo-Version on any Linux distro in our company, mainly because we want all users to always have the exact same tools available no matter what computer they use, and the repo versions differ significantly from the stock openoffice.org version and from each other, not only visually. The stock 3.2.0 runs great on various versions of SuSE, openSUSE and CentOS on various computers, but fails to load on Fedora 13. Here's what happens, with both 3.2.0 and 3.2.1: when I first start it I see the splash screen, then the "Welcome to OpenOffice.org" dailog that appears on first start and asks for my details. I click on next and the application segfaults:

martin/mlaptop$ soffice
/usr/bin/soffice: line 127: 11037 Segmentation fault (core dumped) "$sd_prog/$sd_binary" "$@"

Using the repo version is not an option and company policy, so it's out.

Fedora :: Can't Start OpenOffice 3.2 / Workaround This?

Sep 29, 2010

I am newbie to Fedora.
I have installed Fedora 13 to my ASUS 1015P EEE PC netbook.
I have installed OOo_3.2.1_Linux_x86_install-rpm-wJRE_en-US.tar.gz using the installation manual from OpenOffice.org, however, when I clicked on Applications --> Office --> OpenOffice 3.2 Base/Calc/Impress or anything, nothing happened. The system still runs as normal, but nothing is opened.

Fedora :: OpenOffice - Fails To Start For One User?

Apr 13, 2010

on the risk of starting another OO thread I would like to share my problem to resolve it... (found this 'challenge' nowhere on the forum) installed openoffice apps on my F11 64-bit box through add/remove software until some time ago everything worked well for all users now with one specific user OO hangs upon startup when opening a file (only displaying splash screen, nothing further). this user is nowhere blocked intentionally

to resolve I did:tried other users, all works well (starting from menu, opening files in Nautilus by double-click) renamed ~/.openoffice.org to ~/.openoffice.org.bak so new prefs are created, but new attempt results the same (freeze upon start) copied ~/.openoffice.org from well-run user, but new attempt results the same (freeze upon start)

installed gnumeric as an alternative but I like to bring this to a happy ending.giving enough eyeballs the solution must be out here somewhere

OpenSUSE :: 11.2 OpenOffice Will Not Start?

Sep 23, 2010

My system:
openSUSE 11.2
Linux 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop x86_64
KDE: 4.4.4 "release 3"

My problem: I just did a "zypper dup" to upgrade to KDE 4.4.4 from 4.3.5. All seem to have went well aside from that openoffice won't start anymore. I do get the initial splash and it goes away but then nothing else happens. I have tried both by clicking an .odt document and by starting it from Kickstart menu, same negative result. All other programs seem to be running fine as before. The current version of OO is now 3.2.1.6-1.1-x86_64

What I've tried: I tried to swith all packages to OpenOffice community repository,restarted pc but the result is still the same. I also did an unconditional update, restarted but the result is still the same.

OpenSUSE :: OpenOffice Crashes On Start In 11.3?

Aug 12, 2010

Recently OpenOffice has started crashing on me when loading the program. The splash screen will appear for a moment then the KDE crash handler comes up. Here's what I get when launching from the console:

slomojo@linux-yiyy:~$ ooffice
KCrash: Application 'soffice.bin' crashing...
sock_file=/home/slomojo/.kde4/socket-linux-yiyy/kdeinit4__0

I've tried deleting the .ooo3 directory in my home directory but that doesn't seem to help. Also, I'm running with Sun's JDK in case that makes any difference. I know that OpenOffice was working fine for me immediately after my fresh install of 11.3. I only use OpenOffice once every couple of weeks so I'm not sure if there was a specific update or anything that broke things for me.

Slackware :: Openoffice Will Not Save To Nfs Share - Openoffice 3.2.0

#!/bin/bash

Gimp works fine editing and saving photos from/to the nfs share. kWrite can do its thing and read/create files on the NAS. Files I create with vim are visible and editable under windows. OpenOffice however, when I try an open a file I get "file is locked by unknown user." I open as copy and try saving to the share with a different name... No Dice, error saving to share the file is created on the share but it is empty. I did some reading and found a post that said to comment a line from a file called soffice, which I cannot find.

Fedora Installation :: Openoffice 3 Crashes In Fedora 6 Whenever Keyboard Is Used?

I installed openoffice 3.0 from openoffice site (www.openoffice.org) in my Fedora Core 6 OS computer. However, while doing that I might have made some mistakes. I removed openoffice 2.4 and 2.0 by using openoffice uninstall. In fact, couple of occasions, I have uninstalled and again fresh installed openoffice 3.0 when I noticed that moment I pressed any key, the program crashes. I have by mistaken the script ooffice, thinking that it would automatically install a new one. But there is no ooffice. I have to call soffice for that.

Fedora :: Install Openoffice But Can't Get It To Run?

Aug 6, 2010

I've downloaded and installed Fedora 13 on my harddrive, it boots and I can log in.

What do I do now?

I've tried to install openoffice, but I can't get it to run. Unlike installing a program in windows, it appears there is a lot more involved in getting a downloaded .tar/.bz2/whatever they are to load and become a program.

I've tried borrowing a book on Linux, but I'm lost with that too as it doesn't tell me how to add/remove programs let alone get them running in the first place.

Fedora :: OpenOffice.Org Grammar And Dictionary ?

Nov 6, 2009

I'm running OpenOffice.Org 3.1.1 out of the Fedora repositories. I'm using the UK locales and settings where possible. I can't seem to get the interface in en-gb, and my dictionary keeps recommending the Americanisation of words to me.

Also finally, is there not a grammar checker in OpenOffice.Org? I'm looking in the Language Settings - > Writing Aids and there isn't anything listed under grammar?

Finally, I might as well ask this in case anyone knows why. In the Writer settings I changed the default fonts to the Liberation font family however OpenOffice keeps attaching the Windows equivalents to the end e.g. 'Liberation Sans; Arial' it's really annoying and I don't know why it's doing this.

Fedora :: Openoffice Installed But Not Recognized

Oct 29, 2010

I have openoffice installed but when I click on .odt or any other file types associated with it, it opens the archive manager. For now, I have added the application using "soffice" which will open it. But I have to right click every time I open it, which I don't like, and is a little bit embarrassing when I show off my system to those poor prisoners of microsoft.

I had a hayell of a time getting it installed! I used the software manager which finally worked. But it never put any menu shortcuts in the applications menu, so I had to go on an easter egg hunt to actually find this "soffice" thing, which actually only opens up the general Open Office project manager.In short, what I need is for Open Office files to open with Open Office.

Fedora :: Can't Change OpenOffice's Interface Language To En-gb

Nov 25, 2009

I've been having a few problems with OpenOffice.Org and the language settings.

I'm using the latest Fedora 11 and OpenOffice.Org 3.1.

When trying to change the interface language from en-us to en-gb there isn't an option for en-gb at all in the drop-down, despite me reading that other people have been able to switch the interface to en-gb. This doesn't matter that much, since it's only a few words but I think it might be affecting another issue of mine.

Despite having en-gb set for my dictionary settings, I still get the Americanised words. Stuff like: internationalised vs. internationalized, colour vs. color. I've even installed the Oxford English Dictionary extension but that doesn't show up in the dictionaries.

Edit: I've tried searching the repos. for en-gb langpacks but I can only see the general 'en' English one. Yet I can see there's an en-gb lang pack on the OpenOffice.Org website [URL] but I thought you're meant to use the repos. where possible.

Edit 2: I feel a bit stupid now, it's under uk not en-gb. 'openoffice.org-langpack-uk'. Still doesn't solve my dictionary issue Americanised spellings should come up as red underlined.

Fedora :: Recovering An OpenOffice.org Document After Corruption?

Aug 21, 2010

Last night I was working on a document on my brothers Laptop computer. While working on it however, the computer locked up hard and I had to press the power button. When I booted back up I loaded up OpenOffice.org and it offered to recover my progress as normal, so I gave it the go ahead but it gave me a blank page. No big deal, I thought, and went to load up the original document. That is when the *beep* hit the fan. The original document was corrupted. My theory was that it was saving at the time of the crash. A 50 KB document now reads as only 4 KB. I did have a backup of the document from about a month ago, but that is ten pages shorter than the document that I lost.

Is there anyway I can recover my progress on the document? The computer is my brothers Dell Latitude D600 running Fedora 12 and he is using OpenOffice.org 3. I checked the "~/.openoffice.org/3/user/backup" directory and found two documents, but those are just useless files from when we were doing Grade 10 Social Studies. I doubt the remains of the file are much use, as it has shrunk in size dramatically. So it seems I may be up a certain creek, but I thought I would ask a few of the guru's here for some advice.

I did learn how to make it automatically backup files in OpenOffice.org through. Hopefully that will help prevent these kinds of situations from occurring again.
