Debian Multimedia :: OpenOffice Font Anti Aliasing Broken After Upgrade To Lenny

Sep 14, 2010

I'm trying to upgrade a headless terminal server like box from Etch to Lenny. Users log in to this box using a GoGlobal client and use applications such as OpenOffice and Iceweasel. Because of the ended support for Etch we want to upgrade this machine to Debian Lenny as soon as possible and in order to save time we decided to dist-upgrade instead of installing a new machine. I've done this upgrade in a test environment and everything is working as expected except for OpenOffice, which seems broken after the upgrade:

The problem seems to be caused by the anti aliasing features of OpenOffice and disabling these features in the options panel (Extra -> Options -> OpenOffice.org View -> Screen font anti aliasing) fixes the UI somewhat:

However, as can be seen in the last screenshot, disabling anti aliasing makes the whole thing look terrible. I've searches the net for solutions such as this one but so far I've not been able to fix this. Is there anyone who can point me towards what has changed in the way fonts are rendered since Lenny and what might cause this breakage for OpenOffice? Other applications such as Iceweasel work perfectly and look better then before.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: GIMP Scale Image Without Anti-aliasing?

Jul 17, 2010

I want to make an 8-bit looking image that has very large pixels. My solution was to make a 50x50 image, zoom in, draw it with the 1x1 pixel pencil tool, and then scale it to whatever size i want.Everything went well except, when i try to scale it the anti-aliasing kicks in and blurs everything. Is there a way that i can disable anti-aliasing?

Ubuntu :: Anti Aliasing Not All The Way Off?

Sep 9, 2010

Anti aliasing is off in the top windows. This is what I want everywhere. Firefox and the help application (lower windows) still anti-alias. I DO NOT want that. How do I turn the anti-aliasing COMPLETELY off. System->Preferences->Appearance->Fonts did not do it.

Code: sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig did not do it either.

Debian :: Upgrade From Sarge To Lenny (via Etch) Has Broken Cron?

Sep 20, 2010

I've been upgrading a bunch of our servers from sarge to etch and then to lenny, on two of these servers, cron has broken, cronjobs will not run. On another two (that have no significant differences from the others) cron is unaffected I created a simple job to run while I was testing

*/1 * * * * root /usr/local/mailtest-1 in the script is echo test mail from busted server | mail -s "test mail from your busted server" [URL]. and that runs fine if I run it manually, I've added it into /etc/crontab and crontab -e but haven't got a single mail from it. The cron service is running

I tried apt-get remove --purge and then a re-install but it doesn't seem to have worked. All the logs have stopped rotating as well so I'm starting to think that maybe it's not a fault with cron but with some other service that it depends on. However, I've not been able to figure out what that might be.

Hardware :: Anti Aliasing - Graphics Not Appearing Smooth

Jul 2, 2010

I have a pc in my office. This pc got a Asus mother board. There is a strange issue with graphics on that pc. Anything which I draw using GIMP or Inkscape is not smooth. If I open that file on other system and just save that with different name, it become smooth. Earlier I thought its something related to graphic card. So I purchased a new graphic card (nVidia) but still problem is same. I also tried different OS (including Windows XP as system is on dual boot mode) but no luck. I have attached 2 files. One is saved on that PC and another is from the same file, but I opened that file on second pc and saved that again.

General :: Browser Fonts Have Messed Up Anti Aliasing In Ubuntu 10.04 / Fix This?

Jun 30, 2010

After years of developing on Windows (.NET) I kept hearing about all these new kids on the block using Ruby and Python. Since I wanted to try them I thought it would be nice to check out Linux at the same time. I heard a lot about Ubuntu so I am running Ubuntu 10.04 with VMware.

Everything worked supprisingly well and I didn't have any big problems until I tried browsing some webpages with Ubuntu. It feels like I am browsing the web without my glasses or that I am back on my old CRT monitor.

Example 1

This is Windows Chrome vs Ubuntu Chrome. As you can see the Linux version is a little more blurry and the AA isn't that crisp. I did search Google a bit and found a lot of posts that said to edit the fonts.conf file but that doesn't seem to change anything. I also tried changing the rendering modes (Monochrome, Best shapes, Best contrast and Subpixel smoothing) but that didn't help either.

Since I might be doing some web development with Linux in the future it's fairly important to me that the fonts look the same as in Windows.

Example 2

I'm not sure that this example has anything to do with AA - it seems that the font is just smaller on Linux.

Debian Multimedia :: Workspaces After Upgrade From Lenny To Squeeze

Feb 16, 2011

I have upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze. Aside from a few installation issues, the upgrade went relatively smooth. I had a problem with the graphics proprietary driver not being installed after the upgrade but I was able to solve the problem. I also successfully upgraded the filesystem from ext3 to ext4. One thing that did break on the upgrade is that now I do not have the capability to add and switch workspaces. I went into compizfusion and added for horizontal workspaces, but clicking on them does not switch to them. If I right-click on the preferences, it does not let me allow to add any more workspaces. I can change the number workspaces displayed through Genetal tab in compiz but the graphics appeared that they exist, but when I click or try to even switch between them it does not work. I was able to send a window to workspace two but then I lose all access to it. So it seems it might even exist but the applet in bottom right corner does not let me switch between them. Also draggin a window of the edge to another workspace does not work.

Debian Multimedia :: VLC Playback Broken By Deb-multimedia Upgrade

Jun 14, 2011

I am using debian squeeze and did an aptitude upgrade yesterday. Today I've found that VLC won't play any video; the files open and the audio plays, but the video is black. The aptitude log is below.

I note that VLC received a security upgrade a few days ago, but my suspicion is that the source of this problem is more likely to be the upgrade of libavcodec52 from version 4:0.5.2.6 -> 5:0.6.1+svn20101128-0.2. I believe this upgrade came from the debian-multimedia stable repo I have enabled.

Does this sound right, and what could I do to fix my VLC playback? This is new territory for me, and I'm slightly surprised that such an upgrade would come from the stable branch of debian-multimedia (although I know this is not an official source).

Debian :: Lenny - Changing Console Font Size?

Dec 31, 2010

So I set up that OS I was talking about, everything I need, staying away from the "Startx" command, and it's working very very awesomely except for ONE little problem. The console font size is too big for me, and honestly I don't know how to change that. Coming out of Ubuntu, I'm realizing I don't know as much about config files as I think I do :P

Any way I can change the font size? When I use the GParted live cd, I see a line in the start up that mentions changing the frame buffer to 700 x 48 or something, I'll get specifics soon (computer's not on me) and it makes the font and everything just how I like it.

Debian :: Lenny: Error On Fixing Broken Packages?

Aug 25, 2011

I have Lenny in a multi-boot system on a HP Pavilion DV-1000 laptop, and yesterday when I logged in, noticed the red (-) icon on the right of the top panel. Mouse over it gave the message: "An error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu to see what is ". On doing so, Synaptic came up with "You have 3 broken packages on your system! Use the "Broken" filter to locate them". Selecting "Broken dependencies" resulted in the "base-files", base-passwd", and "dpkg" being listed. All three had "Installed Version" the same as "Latest Version", but marked in red in the check boxes.

Did "Edit"->"Fix Broken Packages" which marked the packages green. Clicking "Apply" gave a summary list: coreutils, gawk, gcc-4.3-base, libacl1, libattr1, libc6, libgcc1, libselinux1, libstdc++6, and izma as the packages that needed to be installed. Clicked "Apply" and got: "E: Internal Error, Could not perform immediate configuration (2) on libc6" A Google search indicated several people had run into this problem, but I could not find one consistent solution that seemed to address the problem completely.

Debian :: Lenny Squeeze Upgrade Not Completing

May 28, 2010

when I tried to upgrade my computer from Lenny to Squeeze and it downloaded everything but it's stuck at installing udev which it said it couldn't do on the 2.6.26 kernel. I then did update-grub and Squeeze's 2.6.32 kernel was seen (on grub). I have grub-legacy chainloading (if I'm not mistaken) but I don't have grub2 installed. When I try to boot through the 2.6.32 kernel so that I can complete the upgrade (that is to install udev and have everything working fine), instead of reaching the OS, it says something along the lines of "kernel panick not syncing vfs" and something about "root(hd1,0)".

1. I changed my repositories to squeeze in sources.list
2. # aptitude update
3. # aptitude install apt aptitude dpkg
4. # aptitude safe-upgrade

After this last command, the computer kept working for about 7 hours, it consumed 2 gb RAM and 1 gb swap, and in the end aborted with the following message:

I searched around and I found out that this error is somehow related to C/C++ package compilation, but I found nothing specific related to Debian's upgrade.

Debian Installation :: Best Way To Upgrade From Lenny To Squeeze

Feb 7, 2011

A week or so ago, I downloaded the current stable and burned it. (lenny)And on the 5th I started installing and finished on the 6th.I then see squeeze was released LOL.I have started using the system and would rather not start over from scratch.(but I will if it is the *best* way to go)I am coming from Ubuntu but I do know my way around the system...

All the threads I see start off by editing the sources list to change lenny to squeezeIs there an easier way?I've looked for a HOWTO but did not see one.I am not looking to stop any part of the system from upgrading. In ubuntu I have gone from distro to distro, but that option is not offered.I checked "Software Sources" -> Updates I do not see the Ubuntu option of allowing distro updates ot be offered.
