Nov 16, 2010I am deploying ubuntu 10.10 to 40 computers in 4 schools (more to come...). The thing is that i would like to set the language of openoffice to swedish from the start. Now i have to open gnome-language-selector and download some packs and apply systemwide. How can this be done from the command-line? Or even better: during install?

Nov 25, 2009I've been having a few problems with OpenOffice.Org and the language settings.
I'm using the latest Fedora 11 and OpenOffice.Org 3.1.
When trying to change the interface language from en-us to en-gb there isn't an option for en-gb at all in the drop-down, despite me reading that other people have been able to switch the interface to en-gb. This doesn't matter that much, since it's only a few words but I think it might be affecting another issue of mine.
Despite having en-gb set for my dictionary settings, I still get the Americanised words. Stuff like: internationalised vs. internationalized, colour vs. color. I've even installed the Oxford English Dictionary extension but that doesn't show up in the dictionaries.
Edit: I've tried searching the repos. for en-gb langpacks but I can only see the general 'en' English one. Yet I can see there's an en-gb lang pack on the OpenOffice.Org website [URL] but I thought you're meant to use the repos. where possible.
Edit 2: I feel a bit stupid now, it's under uk not en-gb. 'openoffice.org-langpack-uk'. Still doesn't solve my dictionary issue Americanised spellings should come up as red underlined.

I have tried to install this package "openoffice.org-|10n-da" with synaptic, but doesn't change anything apparently; can only choose English.
I have also tried to download the language package from openoffice website, but when i run the deb it says "reinstall" and dosen't change anything...
Ubuntu :: Support For Language While Keeping English As Language Used To Display Desktop?
Mar 5, 2011I have some music in another language, but when I open the songs in Banshee, their song names just come up as weird characters (like μ).I went to [System --> Administration --> Language Support] and installed support for that language, but the songs still come up like μ. (But in Nautilus, their proper names show).
I know the solution is to change my whole system language to that language, but I don't want to do that, as I am not very fluent in it. Is there any way to enable support for that language while keeping English as the language used to display my desktop?

User B needs to use Chinese and would like the full system in Chinese. User C needs to use Thai and Chinese. They would prefer their menus to be in Thai and can use iBus for Chinese entry. How do you set up the system so that each user can select their system language when they login?

Nov 28, 2010While installing Ubuntu 10.10 I chose the wrong language for my keyboard. I tried to fix this in keyboard preferences and it seemed to work. The correct one I need is USA (and don't know exactly the difference between USA and USA alternative international). But every time I boot my laptop I get the old language back (Dutch) while USA is above the others in my preferences.

Feb 23, 2010I installed open suse 11.2 yesterday stock Education edition DVD.
I changed the keyboard because it was generating garbage instead of english chars. (everything was stock from the CD)
The replacement kb is a newer one (I favor the old kb's).
eventually the language and layout of the keyboard changes - usually to Arabic or some Eastern alphabet.
I was really starting to like open suse, but if this persists it is unusable.
Something is misbehaving - any Ideas would be appreciated.
I'm running the default desktop env - gnome.

OpenSUSE :: Language Input Method Setup In 11.4?
Mar 11, 2011I just switched back from Mint 10, and while setting to work different input method apps like SCIM and Ibus, bumped into a problem(welcome back to SUSE). After installing Scim, my chinese input works only on one application (Goldendict), it doesn't work in any other app. So I tried Ibus, same result. SO far nothing helped me to make them work. What I 'm trying to find out. Is where I can setup language input method in SUSE, I haven't found such an option anywhere in KDE, yast. WHile in Mint there is such an option, where you can change your inpud method either to scim, xim, scim-bridge or ibus. I tried qtconfig, there I found it, P.S. Warning rage words!: I feel like I should say it. But my previous SUSE experience and overall usage history proves that there is no better distro than Ubuntu nowadays, this is sad indeed, cause I used to start from SUSE. But its true, SUSE is a real pain in the ***, when it comes to getting things done. It seems like whenever u try to setup something there is always a bad feeling of failure. Don't know, but again I'm been consecutively annoyed but its numbness. I'm sorry, cause I feel like I disregard ppl's hard work and support.

I installed the secondary language in the "language" section of yast, but can't see any options for swapping on the fly. Lets say they do 99% of stuff in english, but get an email they want to respond to in the secondary language or want to write a text document using the secondary language, is there a way to switch back and forth on the fly?

I want to switch language in order to have all the writings and messages in English not to write special characters by keyboard. I switched language in both kde system settings>Regional & language and in yast system>language leaving the keyboard layout Italian, but in the kde menu (the lizard on the left of panel) the groups of applications (multimedia, giochi, sistema) are in Italian and yast too (impostazioni amministratore), instead others are in English.
1)is this a bug or I forgot something?
2)which is the differences switching languages by yast and by kde system settings?
3)Is it possible to switch language and don't restart or logout the system?

May 2, 2011How can I change Personal Settings language for window domain user? For local user and root user, I can change my language and from personal setting and it works fine for me.
Find my conf in the following-
->System-> Language->Primary Language = English
->Personal Settings->land/Region->Language = Deutsch
For domain user, I could not change this personal settings language, it is inactive . But for local user I can do that.

Gimp works fine editing and saving photos from/to the nfs share. kWrite can do its thing and read/create files on the NAS. Files I create with vim are visible and editable under windows. OpenOffice however, when I try an open a file I get "file is locked by unknown user." I open as copy and try saving to the share with a different name... No Dice, error saving to share the file is created on the share but it is empty. I did some reading and found a post that said to comment a line from a file called soffice, which I cannot find.

Feb 13, 2010I have been trying to upgrade (ended up trashing and reinstalling) from 11.1 to 11.2. I selected French language with UK keyboard. This option seems in the end to just default to the French keyboad. Reinstalled with UK lang and UK keyboad which is acceptable to me but I then find a big problem. How do I set the compose key so I can enter accented characters etc. (� � � ...) Prior to 11.2 this was some with SAX but SAX support for keyboards appears to have been removed and I believe should be provided by KDE, Gnome, etc.
Does anyone know how to define the compose key in 11.2? I have searched google and the suse forums but found nothing other than something in German that I did not understand. While I could buy a French or perhaps better a Swiss keyboard for the tower this is not a real option for the laptop and on-screen keyboards are useless.
