Ubuntu :: Find - Restore Lost Libre Calc Spreadsheets?
Jul 2, 2011
My low-down lousy computer crashed while I had two spreadsheets (Libre Calc) open. When I re-booted the 'tater, then clicked on the launchers for my spreadsheets, Libre Calc opened new, blank documents.
Is there a way to find the lost spreadsheets? If I can't have the whole things, then just the data would be OK.

Okay so I have a file that I always save and close properly and get in my Ubuntu One folder for backup that will not open. Its called "Income.ods" and is quite important and I cannot seem to recover it. When I double click it, it shows the Libre Office Calc splash screen shows up then goes away and the nothing, no error messages, no nothing. I tried to open it on my Windows Vista machine and it said it was corrupted and could not open in Office Word. I tried a few recovery tools but to no avail.

When I look for install of Libre Office I find a download on the Libre site with a list of install files that are longer than the reach of my patience.
I can't find it in Software Center. Shouldn't it be there?

We had a power-out, which left my Ubuntu box off.
The modem & router is a friend's place, and it was rebooted. Both his boxes (Windows XP and 7) work fine.
but I can't get my box to hook back up. I've tried rebooting, unplugging cable to router from both ends (my box and router), rebooting his modem (Rogers' service) by turning off and on power supply for 3 minutes (as recommended by Rogers).
Once I got the Network-auto to show in the dropdown menu (I have a radio symbol on panel across top), but not again. I tried adding and editing a network connection (both wired and auto) but neither works, and if I boot unconnected they disappear.
The only thing I can get to show is a black box to the right on the desktop that has a red x and says Network Disconnected.
Me and friend are both frustrated as I don't want to interrupt his working use of internet to fix mine.
I have never understood how to connect to internet really, but it seemed to have solved itself in the past.
There is no password on the router, and we are not using wireless (which we never got to work).
The Rogers Modem is a "Motorola Surfboard" (Black).
The router is an Airlink 101 super-g wireless router.
My machine is a p4 motherboard with builtin ethernet socket on back.
My Ubuntu is I think Karmic 9.1

I installed Natty 11.04 - 64 bit and by mistake I lost most of the repository keys. When I go to Synaptic and click on Restore Defaults nothing happens.
I just need to restore the default Ubuntu keys. I believe I have the repository links.

I have a weird problem that after increasing the screen resolution from 1024x786 (4:3) to 1280x900 something (also 4:3) that both top and bottom panels have disappeared. I am not familiar with the keyboard shortcuts to much but managed to get a terminal running so I should be able to do some command line stuff but as I am not too familiar where to edit perhaps someone can give me some pointers.
I guess first step is to restore the resolution to the original. Anyone any ideas?

As I type this, I'm waiting (and waiting) (and waiting) for the Repair Tool Box, "Search For Lost Partitions" tool to stop running off of the install CD. I didn't actually mean to do that (I meant to select "repair file system!) and I don't see any way to abort it! How to I make it stop? (You can insert your best Deanna Troi voice there, if you like: "make it STOP!") Or do I just wait until sometime next week for this rascal to finish examining a THREE HUNDRED GIG partition, byte by byte . .. ?

So I'm trying to create a spreadsheet that operates in hexadecimal, binary (maybe), and decimal, for fairly large values. While openoffice does handle hexadecimal fine, if you convert it to decimal (at least so far, if anybody has a more naturalistic way of doing this, that would be great), it can't seemingly handle how large the values are, and truncates. So, if possible, I would like an open source alternative that is perhaps more robust than OpenOffice. Hopefully one exists.

I think I made one tweak too far and as a result have lost my desktop - no top panel, launcher just a blank screen with my desktop background. I've created a new user and everything is fine under that account so I don't think it is terminal. which files I should delete/replace to restore the desktop back to it's default settings? I've deleted the .gnome2, .gconf and .gconfd folders but that has not solved the problem.

I have multiple .xls documents that are formatted as such,
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<?mso-application Excel.Sheet?>
They are all given different filenames bob_smells.xls, nancy_smells_worse.xls etc. I was wondering using Linux (LUbuntu specifically), would it be possible to combine all of these worksheets into one document, with each of the seperate files becoming a tab / sheet within the one file (And the name reflecting the original name of the document)?

I installed OOo on Slackware linux 13.1 recently. It worked fine until yesterday when I tried to open up an xls file which I often use, and I was presented with a "filter" dialogue with loads of options but no explanation what they were for. I tried several of them but nothing seemed to make any difference - the file was unopenable. I found a suggestion online that I should try to delete my configuration file ~/.openoffice, which I did. Unfortunately now whenever I open OOo I get a smaller dialogue box with some gibberish in it. It's some crazy wingdings font or something, and I have no idea what it's trying to tell me.
Anyway now I can't access any of my files. I have tried reinstalling OOo and deleting my config file again, neither does anything - i'm always getting the nonsense dialogue box. I have even installed OOo on a virtual WinXP and the same happened there (the 'filter' dialogue not the gibberish font)Has OOo somehow managed to corrupt ALL my files?

I was messing around with my monitor settings in Ubuntu 10.04 [The first time when everything worked right away with my system!], and I stupidly deleted all the applets in the upper panel, and now I can't find them anymore. I looked though the applet selection screen, and I couldn't find the sound applet, the all-in-one power off/log out/switch user applet, or the email/chat applet. How do I get these applets back on my top panel?

I resized my root partition yesterday to make it include the unused 28GB at the end of my drive, but something went wrong and now I can't mount it again.. I think this has to do with the computer coming with Vista preinstalled and the partitions not being aligned to cylinders. This is what the partition table looked like before the resize (according to fdisk):
Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xdec3533c
[code]....
None of the last two partition schemes works, when I try to mount sda6 I get an error saying that the XFS superblock contains an invalid magic number. I've tried running xfs_repair on it, but even though it found a few secondary superblocks it couldn't verify them. I've tried running testdisk with the "Cylinder boundary" option set to "no", but it would not find my root partition... The log from the search is here I don't really care about the other partitions, all I need is my old root partition so that I can copy all the important stuff to another drive and then start from scratch with a new partition table (and remove the recovery partition aswell since I don't need it).
