Software :: Offline Applications For Website Content
May 12, 2011
I am considering creating a new website with a number of relative links. By this, I mean something similar to a wiki where inside a given page are links to other terms/ideas on other pages (in the same site). In reality, what I plan to link to/from are various articles which are inter-related but not entirely encyclopedic in nature (as many wikis such as wikipedia tend to be).
I am looking for two applications which I can use offline (I think--if you think I need something else, open to all ideas):
An offline application that is *very* simple at allowing me to create content articles as described above and to preview that the relative links work (if need be through a browser or some sort of preview) such that once I put them online I will have little/no necessary clean-up to ensure relative links still work. My articles will have both images and text and I also want to be able to relatively easily move the images around where I want them without having to mess around with HTML directly too much. The more WYSIWIG/visual, the better.
While I'm at it, any recommendations of how to easily get this content online? Also, can I worry about the template (CSS or whatever) later or do I need to do that right from the start? (Sorry, haven't done this stuff in about 3 or 4 years and my memory is lacking.)I use Ubuntu 10.04 and am trying to avoid KDE at the moment.

I set up Evolution with a gmail account using TLS both for sending and receiving messages. Then I markd Inbox and All mail folders to be synced for offline usage from their properties (right-click folder and select Properties item).I tried File>Download Messages for Offline Usage and Send/Receive button and Work Offline / Work Online and pressing sync for offline usage when it asks before going offline. But in all situations, Evolution ONLY shows messages (at its status-bar area) about syncing messages, checking for new mail, etc. but DOES NOTHING without any real network activity. Time to time it sends receive some kilobytes, but I could not make it to start some gigabyte gmail syncing transfer.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with Firefox 3.5.8 and Flash player 10.0.45.2.When my wife accesses Citibank's website, the flash content does not 'play' automatically. If I right-click and select play (see attached screenshot) things work normally. How do I configure firefox to play the flash content automatically, either globally or on a per website basis?

I got the Linux Nov 2010 magazine with the CD Magazine archive and aplications but can't find any applications. How do I find them? Also I bought this magazine as I am a teacher and want my students to be able to install one or two open source applications without having to go online. What can I do if there are no applications on that cd. How can I install applications offline, or can I?/.

OpenOffice 2.4
I'm trying to fill in an application form that I downloaded. It has some shaded areas where I can answer questions, but there are
a couple places where the shaded areas are missing.Have you previously applied with the C.B.E? "Readonly content cannot be changed No modifications will be accepted." Can I add a shaded area in so I can fill this in, or can I disable the read only part?

I am using find to search for .tgz files modified more than 7 days ago and delete them.find /directory/ -iname backup*.tgz -daystart -mtime +7 -exec rm -rf {} My problem is that find will go through the content of tarball as well and list all content. I want to only search main tarball and delete it if older than 7 days.

I feel shy asking this question but, 90% of the applications I install in Ubuntu (last release), do not show up later on in the applications menu, so I cant run them. I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?

I was wondering if there was any way to remove icons from the installed applications menu?I recently attempted to install GOG.com's Zork Anthology using Wine and when I de-installed, the icons for those files were still listed in installed applications. Is there anyway to delete them manually?

I'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.

Is there a programmatic way to get the list of all installed applications on Linux.
Also, how can we get the application activities in Linux OS like running applications name, time of day when they started, duration till the applications were running on system, application version etc.
Is there a way to do this in C/C++.
I am building an app that runs like a daemon and fetches the applications status and sends it to the network admin for him to monitor the application usage pattern on the user computers in the network.

For testing I made a debian 8 dvd 1 installation on an usb stick. I selected desktop gui gnome and lxde. Both work. An ethernet 100mb cabel connection works. I can open iceweasel an surf websites.
If I open synaptic package manager and select vlc for installation or press 'mark all upgrades' I get this message. Insert disk debian gnulinux 8 jessie official dvd bin in drive.
Synaptic does not try to get packages from the internet.
Is a debian 8 dvd 1 installation an off line installation? The package system will not connect to the internet?

Two nights ago I was trying to diagnose what was wrong with my internet connection. I couldn't get web pages to load, IRC and ssh weren't connecting, and email wasn't downloading (I still use POP3). I didn't know what to use to check my internet connection. I did a ping, but I didn't know how to interpret the results. So without the internet, I was totally blind.
Are there documents anywhere which install with Debian which I can search offline when my internet connection dies?

I downloaded some rpm files from rpmfusion.org to my computer using my Windows Vista OS. I then moved the files to the partition where Fedora is installed. When I ran the files on the terminal using the rpm command, it showed a lot of errors like: xyz needs abc.. and so on. How then can I install softwares and codecs on my computer without being online? I don't have screenshots right now.

Administering offline Linux boxes can be a serious pain. The Debian flavours now have keryx to make life easier. Keryx is a cross-platform application, which means one can get the dependencies from Windoze too. Is there any similar package for rpm/fedora based flavours? In the absense of a proper Offline manager, I was also wondering if there is a way to collect the output of:
Code:
yum deplist <package>
... condense or sieve out the double listings, and pipe that to a text file? One can copy the output and run
Code:
yum reinstall <paste them here> --downloadonly
and get all the required dependencies from the yum cache. If all that can be accommodated in one script... then that's pretty cool. I don't have the scripting know-how to dive into this.

I've just finished my 100% total move from Windows after 2 years of developing on two different systems, one Slackware and one XP. I have come away from Slack because it was just taking too long to maintain the rapid advances in development tools and have now moved onto Ubuntu full time.
The last tool I was using on Windows was Dreamweaver, and not for editing (I had Bluefish for that) but for the HTML validation that worked offline. Thing is, I now can't find anything similar on Ubuntu. I've no idea how to get the W3C Validators working offline and the last two add-ons I tried with Firefox didn't work. Anybody know of any packages with reliable HTML and CSS validation that works offline? An offline link checker would also be useful.
