Software :: Kubuntu 9-10 Installer Scripts After Remastersys Backup
Jan 25, 2010
I installed Kubuntu 9-10 on my laptop. I used Remastersys to make a Backup Live DVD of my installation. I cannot install this Live DVD on other machine. It boots fine on other computer. I want to know how to install this Live DVD. What is the installer for kubuntu on the HD installation called?

Newly installed Lucid and several programs to get it just the way I like it. I went to make a backup of the entire system with remastersys for the second time (first time was ok) but everytime it says iso file too big, which it is at 16gb plus. I have been through and double checked that my personnel files, pics, music, movies are all removed and my virtual machine. When checking with "Disk usage analyzer" it says I have 158.8GB free but when I check the home file system itself it says I have 150.1GB free. Note the missing 8.1GB. I believe this is the root of my inability to make a backup.

I have a question about ext4,remastersys backup : I have upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 via the upgrade button in synaptics, so it means that the files system was not touched, which means that my system is still ext3 as it was when I installed the 9.04. I can make a backup of my system as it is configured right now (that's how i like it) using remastersys.
Can I install my system backup into my machine after formating it into ext4 or when I create a backup using remastersys it must stay in the files system as it was when it was backed up? The issue is that right now the 9.10 responds from some reason a little bit slower than my 9.04 responded (to everything e.g. open/close windows etc...) and I read in the forum that ext4 makes 9.10 run faster.

I don't want to partition for Linux just yet, I'm still in the testing phase, but I started torrenting ISO files for Mint 9 KDE and Fedora and other Linux Distros but I forgot that I wasn't using my original 1TB of HDD, but only 30GB which is th maximum I could give it... How can I add more to it without partitioning?

I am booting from a USB stick live CD image of Kubuntu 10.04 Beta. When I run the installer, and choose the "manual select partitons" option, it lists only my full hardisk, whereas I have atleast 5 partitions on it, and none are shown. Could anybody help me with this? I want to install on one of the partitions and leave the rest intact. I am dual-booting BTW.

So I've finally given up on saving my kubuntu install that wont boot. I've searched, and looked, but couldn't find a thing. My delema now is to make sure that I:
a) get all of the user data safely packed up onto my external USB drive. I believe it's all in the home directory. I'm not sure about getting hidden files though...
b) get the new install to go smoothly, and not mess up grub or the parralell XP install on the same hard drive.
c) get the user data back on the computer and recreate the user structure. Permissions were messed up already, so setting those up again is not an issue.
So, I've been poking around, and this is how I think things should go:
a) tar cvpjf backup.tar.bz2 /home to get my home directory backed up. Not exactly sure how to get from here to my external hd, but I'm sure I can figure it out
b) just run a live cd of kubuntu, delete the old partitions, and reinstall over them?
c) unzip the tar into by /home directory.
That's all I've been able to find so far. How do I set up the users? Will they show up as soon as I untar? Will the resinstall play nice with my windows install? Will I get all the hidden files too? Is there anything I'm missing?

i am using unetbootin to create a live-usb of this iso: freemed-live-0.1-i386.iso (i think it is based on kubuntu). when i turn on my netbook with the usb plugged in i get about 6 menu items (default, live, live expert, linux, ...) but no matter which i select it takes me to some ubuntu text install where it is asking me to select language and keyboard layout.
is there a way make it boot to the live desktop ?

I have remastersys backup on DVD but I have no idea how to restore. There is install option when I boot from DVD but it doesn't install anything to hard drive. It looks as if my system was loaded to memory or was run as LiveCD. In Nautilus I can see my original root and home partitions (I mean these on hard drive) as separate drives, not partitions. On remastersys website I didn't find any information.

I installed opensuse 11.4 on a virtual box , made tweaks, edits, updates, installs, and I want to install it on a hard drive but I want to install it with all the tweaks/installs i made in virtualbox. There's a program in Ubuntu called Remastersys that will create an ISO with all the packages and updates already on the distro and I'm looking for something similar in OpenSUSE. Can it be done? Is there another route I can take that will create an iso out of all the software updates/installs thats I've made?

I was wondering which direction I should look for creating a backup of a customized Ubuntu minimal installation without remastersys. This LiveCD will live inside my arcade cabinet, so I want to keep everything as minimal as possible and remastersys installs tons of dependencies.

i feel like this is a stupid question as i have seen many different ways to make a debian live cd, but the only way i understand is remastersys.i am trying to make a snapshot of my own debian unstable (sid) to be capable of re-distribution. remastersys will ONLY work on ubuntu, lenny, and squeeze.if anyone knows of any relatively simple tools i could use or could write an easy how too that would be very much appreciated. i am attempting to stray away from ubuntu and ubuntu based distros and use debian instead, although i cant find any distribution based on debian that i really like (maybe linux mint debian edition based on debian testing), but i really want the software right out of unstable (sid) and i would like to be able to make a distribute-able snapshot for myself and others that may be interested. (xfce + compiz + others, hopefully plymouth, out of the box). i have made some very good headway on this, but i dont know how to make a live cd out of an installed system without remastersys.

I've installed Remastersys on my Dell Mini and created a custombackup.iso which which runs Ubuntu 10.04 perfectly from both CD and usb flashdrive.
However, since backing up my complete HDD a problem has arisen with my wireless connection and I now want to reinstall the cloned copy of my OS onto my HDD.
The question is: how? Whether I use Ubuntu's disk creator, unetbootin or penlinuxdrive, booting from the flashdrive does not offer me an 'install' option.

Lets say we want a unified custom distro of Ubuntu or Mint for a project and we all need the same tools, the same bookmarks, and some preconfigured accounts and IRC chat link......Is there a way to rebrand it easily with those tools? Can you using a different tools, like morphing morphix to mod something other than Morphix? Like using Morphix to remake a Ubuntu spinoff or using it to combine repositories from 2 different releases?

Kubuntu 9.10
Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. I want to use GParted on a LiveCD to format Kubuntu and expand my Ubuntu home partition to sit on top of Kubuntu's space right now. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?

VirtualBox: So, with VB, testing out stuff without messing up your actual operating system (in my case Linux). (I had more to say but can't remember atm) Remastersys: Well, I think I MIGHT have a reason as to why Remastersys doesn't work for me. I think I might have downloaded the wrong repository thing. I downloaded:
[Code]...
I ask because of the word Lucid is in the sentence. What do you all think, should I un-install remastersys and downloaded the one with the word Lucid in it and see if that makes a difference as to whether the program makes a proper .iso file or not?
