I need to install sun-java6-plugin on Debian 6. I already have a Web browser installed in /usr/local/, but it seems sun-java6-plugin requires me to install 1 browser from their list in order to install it. The thing is, I don't want to install any of those browsers, and disk space is kind of limited. How can I install jun-java6-plugin without installing a browser which it depends on?

I then went to the Ubuntu Software Center under Applications. I found sun java6 but there was no "install" button,as there is for the other software available.

Is there a key I have neglected to download, or is the package unsigned for some reason?
what the open source equivalent to sun-java6-plugin is? For example, the open source equivalent of sun-java-6-jre is openjdk-6-jdk.
View 2 Replies View RelatedInitially when I upgraded to Lucid I uninstalled openJDK and switched back to sun-java5 packages due to some application support limitations. Now I have to upgrade to sun-java6- packages. I removed the sun-java5 packages and installed the sun-java6 packages. Including the sun-java6-plugin.
I can see the plugin in aboutlugins in Firefox 3.6.10 however nothing (like webex or applets) related to java works. As a workaround I have used the Icedtea plugin which comes with open JDK and that seems to work. However I want to get the sun-java6-plugin working.

That's the error I get. When trying to run a java app with the firefox plugin, the browser simply crashes if it's the 64bit java or tells me it's not installed if it's the 32bit version.
I'm at a loss as to what to do. I think it has something to do with leftover gunk from a previous version I misinstalled(Is that even a word?) Anyway, the only thing that google could come up with was a solution for windows which laid blame on Bill Gates for having a bunch of pf (java prefetch) files stuffed into c:windows for no apparent reason. The solution was to delete them, but I can't seem to find the java prefetch folder in linux. The method I used is downloading the rpm from java.com the rpm2tgz then installpkg then cp libnpjp2.so to firefox plugins folder.
When I try to add a new new package (such as sun-java6-jre or sun-java6-jdk) using 'Synaptic Package Manager', I can see no activity going on and upon canceling it, I get the following response.

limewire/frostwire stops installing at preparing sun-java6-jre everytime i try to install one of them. i tried rebooting and it still does this.

My understanding is that when one installs Adobe Reader the browser plugin automatically gets added. For some reason the Adobe browser plugin isn't working in Firefox on my Ubuntu 10.10 desktop. The plugin doesn't show up in Tools Add-ons or Tools -> Manage Content Plug-ins. It works fine on my laptop with the same versions of Ubuntu, Adobe Reader (9.4.2-0maverick1), and firefox (3.6.17).

So there are no copyright issues here and I will do it anyway, the only point is that if I can convert them to .avi I can save 4 or 5 movies on a blank DVD whereas if I have to copy the .iso images I can only save one DVD per blank DVD. So it's a bit of a waste.
dvdrip doesn't work on this one, so I tried via vlc. Have you tried installing adobe flash plugin recently? My distro is slackware 13 64bit, I just can't install this plugin.
