So I tried installing fedora 13 on old pc (5+ years), the live cd boots ok. but when I click install to disk, the "starting Install to disc" tab comes up and then goes away, then nothing.This comp definitely has a large enough hard drive. (are there ram requirements that could cause such a thing?). It currently has windows xp (and probably loads of viruses).
View 3 RepliesI am trying to put Ubuntu on a friend's machine off a disk, but every time I run the disk, I get to the menu to choose install, try the OS, etc. But when I click anything other than memtest, it goes to a black screen with a flashing cursor for a few seconds, then goes entirely black.This was with Kubuntu 10.04, but I had similar results with Ubuntu Karmic, only instead of a cursor I had the Ubuntu symbol for a few seconds.
The odd part is, I tried an old cd of BackTrack 3, and that ran without a hitch, but the newer runs won't run. The computer has a gig of RAM, a decently fast processor, and an ATI Radeon HD 3600 series video card.
I used my fc13's "Virtual Machine Manager" to install a FC14 vm image from a new iso.After a week of 8 hour days I got fc14 installed, I think that the "minimal" install option was bad. Now it takes yum 15 minutes to get warmed up. and about an hour for 1 simple package.(It was going in the background while working on other stuff, causing the cpu fan to roar with the extra load)It would be easier to install Fedora on an abacus or perhaps water clock.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been out of the linux game for a few years and decided to get back into it, I've been working now for a few days on figuring out why my machine's network card does not seem to want to work on a new FC13 installation.The machine is an older Dell Dimension with an 2.53 Gig Celeron Processor, 512 Megs of RAM (A gig soon) and the ethernet card is an Intel Corporation 82562EZ. Sone generic thing, though FC13 does recognize and appears to have appropriate software.
ifconfig shows no IP address in the x.x.x.x sense, and restarting the network doesn't seem to do anything. The network card is in working order, I tested it in a winxp installation, and the cable is also functioning.
I am trying to add a virtual host to my machine by name to the IP here.It absolutely refuses to work.it is a mess server I hope to upgrade soon, but it has 2 versions of apache running together on it.The first one (php3) just proxies all the requests from 80 to 8080 which has another instance of apache running php5.I don't know what else to do, it keeps defaulting to the host header error virtual host.

i hope some one could help me regarding samba.. i am running a FC13 acting as a samba server & an IP of 192.168.0.3.. I have already installed samba from the fedora core repo.. I can see my samba server on my winxp client.. but everytime i tried to access the samba share a windows message appears that says:\192.168.0. 3 Installer is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. etc. the network path is not found.I already open the port 139 & 445 for samba to pass trough the firewall.. but the problem is still the same.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just had a hard drive failure on my mythtv box that I had been running F14 on. I reinstalled F14 and just got about everything up and running like normal again except that I upgraded the kernel by mistake when I was upgrading everything else to current levels. The problem is that I run a hauppauge pvr150 on this mythtv box, and the code for capturing on this card is broken on the latest kernel version. I have the kernel headers and development files installed for the newest kernel that I can't really use, but I didn't install the kernel headers for the older kernel before the upgrade. Now, I am looking for a way to forcefully install the older kernel development files so that I can compile my the proprietary nvidia drivers against it for my adapter. I downloaded the rpm files from the fedora 14 repository directly. Is there an option for rpm that I can use to force the installation?

I am trying to install 10.04 on top of the older Ubuntu and I want to keep the Windows partition. Last time I tried, I completely screwed up.I have multiple partitions now with a bunch of smaller ones that got created by mistake. I would like to re-size my partitions to have 1 main windows partition, 1 linux partition and 1 swap file partition. My HD is 160GB and I would ideally like to have the Ubuntu and Windows partitions roughly the same size.I included some screenshots of the install process and also a screenshot of my partitions.

I have with the Videocard of one of my laptops. This laptop has a Mobility Radeon X600 card (RV380 based). I always had 3D hardware acceleration with mesa (at least in Fedora 12 and 13), but now it doesn't work. Boot seems normal, but reviewing the logs, I see this in the Xorg.0.log (after loading the radeon modues):

I have HandBrake 0.9.4 installed from Slackbuilds.org, but a new version came out yesterday that I want to install, but it isn't up on slackbuilds yet. Can I install it from source without doing anything to the old install?
When I installed it from slackbuilds, the slackbuild script also installed all the external multimedia libraries that I need. If I use removepkg (or whatever the command is) to remove the old HandBrake before installing the new one, will that also remove the multimedia packages that were installed along with handbrake? They were all built into the same .tgz
On my work computer so I can't do anything with it right now anyway, so maybe a slackbuild will be up when I get home.
I installed Ubuntu Server 8.10, 9.04, 10.04, until I discovered that the packages of these versions to upgrade and install graphics settings are not available, then install the current version is 11.04 and there I found that repositories responded and set me right. Then the repositories of previous versions are not available? When I install the current version on all packages that I need to back packs and save it for if I need it later.
How do I get the packages and put together a repository itself if others were dashed this is still operating, and maintenance would be needed?
I've been searching Google for a dedicated Sirius/XM client, but cannot find anything recent.Some of the older clients no longer work after the two companies merged.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a really weird one. This may be a putty issue, or it may be a config issue in Ubuntu. I've no idea who to blame. I have four machines involved in my little issue that has me scratching my head on where to even BEGIN to diagnose what is going on. The computer I'm attempting to connect to (For identification purposes, I'll call it the main machine) is running a relatively new install of KUbuntu 10.04, stock install of openssh daemon. ufw is disabled, firewalls are off, etc, and I can prove that later.
The machine acting odd is a Win XP 32 bit running Putty. Haven't had a problem until this reload of the previously mentioned machine. A Work machine that is running RedHad of some flavour. A Virtual Machine running a headless setup of Ubunto 8.04. Now that the introductions are over, here is a quick map of the machines that can successfully connect with. My major problem is that I cannot get SSH (And ONLY SSH) to work between the XP machine and the main machine.
Work -> Main = Works
Work -> VM = Works
XP -> VM = Works
XP -> Main = Fails
XP -> VM -> Main = Works
Main -> Main = Works (IE: "ssh localhost")
VM -> Main = Works
When I try to get the XP machine to connect to the Main machine, I get an error with Putty saying:
"Server sent disconnect message
type 2(protocol error):
baad service request ssh-connection"
I've changed Putty to try using SSH Protocol 1 only, but it says the protocol isn't installed on the Main machine, which is true. I've tried setting just 1, and it gives me the error, and I've tried setting it to "2 only" and it again comes up with the error. I went into /var/log as root on the Main machine, and did a "tail -n0 -f *" and then tried to connect, but nothing relevant shows up.
As for the proof that the firewall is disabled, three of the machines are working with Synergy, I am able to swap between all three of the machines without a problem, I can get to WebAdmin from the XP machine to the Main machine, and I can open a Samba share from the XP machine to the Main machine without a problem. This sounds like a protocol issue, but I can't see anything in WebAdmin that'll put me in the right direction.
Fedora (2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64) I installed that update, during the installation process it said that it had to remove three packages, one of them was kmod nvidia for the old kernel (Fedora (2.6.33.8-149.fc13.x86_64))After the update finished installing the new kernel, I restarted the system and Nvidia did not load. (I assume because Update manager removed the old nvidia? But I also assumed that a new version would be installed automatically?)I received the following Boot messages:

I'm confused, if Update Manager removed kmod nvidia, then why does yum say it is installed? And why doesn't the new kernel update work with that version? Or should I install a driver version for that particular kernel? I've read while searching that I need to install a kmod-nvidia for that particual kernel version and that I should login to my previous kernel until that happens, is that the problem I'm having?
Why don't rpmfusion and fedoraproject release the kmod-nvidia and kernel updates at the same time to avoid problems such as this? Does anyone know how long does it usually take for rpmfusion to release the new kmod-nvidia driver for the latest kernel?
Last nights upgrade of java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-43.1.8.2.fc13.i686 and java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin-1.6.0.0-43.1.8.2.fc13.i686 prevent the loading of Ameritrades Command Center.Downgrading to version 1.6.0.0-37 fixes the problem. I'll post the bugzilla number as soon as I get the chance to file it.

I may need to install Windows 7 on this machine but have no desire to stop using Ubuntu for normal use. Is it possible to create a partition to install Windows on, without changing my Ubuntu set up? View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install on a machine that has a CD drive but no DVD (and is currently running 10.3). Following the procedure here I created a filesystem on the server and copied the DVD ISO to that. I boot with the network install CD and in the boot options I put in
install=hd:/dev/sda7/openSUSE-11.2-i586.iso
But then I get a red error diag saying
Could not find the openSUSE respository

I go into the manual setup program, select hard disk, sda7, the iso file appears in the "Enter the source directory." dialog so I click OK. It does the "Loading the installation system" (or something, it's quick) and then errors with "No repository found". I have also tried sharing the iso file from a windows server and using network SMB but that didn't work. Tried mounting the install DVD (that I have used successfully before) on the windows machine, sharing it, and point the manual SMB install at that. Everything gives me "No repository found." I could use the Network CD to do an Internet install, but that seems unnecessarily slow and wasteful of bandwidth when I've already downloaded the DVD iso.
Can I do a fresh install of CentOS Linux on a remote machine? I have a machine with Windows NT in a remote location. Now I want to use that system as my deployment machine. To proceed with my plan I need to install a Linux OS (have chosen CentOS). The guy there with the machine is not very knowledgeable of the installation process of any OS.
