Ubuntu :: Installing Windows 7 On A Machine?

Jul 9, 2010

I have an Acer laptop, on which a I have Ubuntu installed with no disk partitioning. I may need to install Windows 7 on this machine but have no desire to stop using Ubuntu for normal use. Is it possible to create a partition to install Windows on, without changing my Ubuntu set up? Also, whilst I'm at it, I'd like to create a third partition for general data storage.

General :: Installing Windows 7 Onto A New Drive On An Ubuntu Machine?

Sep 20, 2009

I want to install Windows 7 on a separate drive on my PC that already has Ubuntu. I was wondering if anybody had any tips on how best to go about this? I was going to install a new empty drive, removing the current one, then put the current drive back once Windows had been installed. However, I'm not entirely sure if this will work, since Linux currently runs from the first drive: Will it be confused by making its drive the second drive (these will both be SATA drives, BTW), and how would I get Linux to run? Could I change which drive to boot from in the BIOS, or would replacing the MBR to provide a boot loader menu be easier?

i currently am running windos 7 (64 bit) and would also like to install ubuntu on a second hard drive. i understand a dual boot is easy enough to do, but i'd like to install ubuntu so that it and windows are completely isolated. rather than be prompted with a boot screen to choose os, i would do so by changing hd boot priority in bios. i'd like the end result to be 2 separte computers in one box. can it be set up this way, and if so, how?

Ubuntu :: Numbers To Put In Linux Machine Can Connect / Print To Windows Machine?

Apr 16, 2011

I remember it being really easy to add a printer attached to another computer using Ubuntu, but I don't remember exactly what made it so easy. All I know is that now that I have switched to Kubuntu the process has become much harder because now I have to find out some special locations, numbers etc. for it to connect to the printer. It's connected to a Windows XP machine on the other side of the house.
It says alot about 'contacting the network administrator' if I am unsure about what to put in. But I am more or less the network administrator. how to find out what numbers to put in so that my Linux machine can connect and print to the Windows machine? Or maybe someone knows a few commands to share? I go to Applications > Settings > System settings, Printer configuration, New Printer, New Network printer, and then there are a few options but I don't know which one to choose. Windows Printer via Samba, I guess? Then in the box that says smb://[enter stuff here] I need to put in info but I don't know how to find that info.

Ubuntu Networking :: Way To Share Folder From Machine To Windows Machine

Aug 28, 2010

I am trying to establish the easiest way to share a folder from an Ubuntu machine to a Windows machine.In the past I have added things to smb.conf and that has all worked fine but what I am trying to do is to figure out what the "new user" way of doing this is so that when I am helping other people I know I am getting them to do the simplest thing.I completely removed samba and reinstalled it so that I didn't have any configuration. Right clicked on a folder and selected "Sharing Options" ticked the "Share this folder box" gave it a name and a comment and ticked the other two boxes.

When I went to the windows laptop then it kept asking for a username/password and nothing worked.Back on the ubuntu machine I did sudo smbpasswd -a [username] and created a blank password. Now from the windows machine I can access the shared folder.Is the smbpasswd step still required? It's very confusing for a new user as there is no suggestion that anything other than right clicking on the folder and choosing the options you want would be required. Is it something to do with the fact that this is an ubuntu machine that has gradually been upgraded through versions and this problem wouldn't have been there from a new install?

Networking :: Can't Ping CentOS 5.3 Machine To XP SP2 Windows Machine

Oct 31, 2009

I have two machines, one has XP service pack2, second one has CentOS 5.3 (Linux), they are connected through crossover cable. I have configured everything fine but don't know why till now can't ping!

A. Windows machine settings as follows:

IP Address: 192.168.1.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gatway: 192.168.1.1
+ Firewall is turned OFF.

B. For Linux machine, I will list everything stored in network files, logged as [root@localhost ~]# :

1. /etc/sysconfig/network:

ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.4 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0
route add default gw 192.168.1.1 eth0
NETWORKING = yes
NETWORKING_IPV6=no
HOSTNAME=localhost.localdomain

2. /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

DEVICE="eth0"
IPADDR="192.168.1.4"
NETMASK="255.255.255.0"
ONBOOT="yes"
BOOTPROTO="yes"

3. /etc/resolv.conf

nameserver 192.168.1.4
search locadomain

4. I restarted network service using this command:

/etc/init.d/network start

everything is fine. When checking using ifconfig command. I get the following:

eth0 Link encap: Ethernet HWaddr 00:08:0D:EE:19:66
inet addr:192.168.1.4 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr:........

[code]....

I mean I assigned the IP: 192.168.1.4 to Linux machine (Eth0). I did everything above and can't ping till now, when pinging from windows or Linux I get a message "destination host unreachable" restarted Linux many times but same result. NETWORK CABLE is working fine I tested it.

Ubuntu :: Installing Lexmark S305 Multipurpose Machine In 10.4?

Dec 23, 2010

I am a total noob, don't know anything about installing tar based software into my Ubuntu 10.4 set up (a Dell desktop previously running XP). I want to install a driver for my Lexmark Impact s305 multipurpose machine, using the driver the Lexmark site recommended, but have been completely unsuccessful.

Here's the software by name. lexmark-inkjet-legacy-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh.tar.gz. I extracted after right clicking on the icon, and that produced this file: lexmark-inkjet-legacy-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh. I launched that, got past the license agreement, and came up to a screen that said I needed root privileges and asked for an "administrative password."

I only have one password and entered that. It always works installing software via Synaptic or the Ubuntu Software Center, and everywhere else. Nevertheless, in trying to install this driver, I got this error message: "incorrect password." I have been unable to get around this despite repeated efforts. The installer software simply won't accept my password and so it won't install the driver.

In researching the issue, I have seen other people complain of the same problem. Given that I am a noob at this, have I missed something critical to the install? Does the software just not work (I have heard Lexmark is not too keen on Linux)?

General :: Installing Win7 On Machine Running Ubuntu ?

May 15, 2011

I've assembled a new computer to replace a dead Xp/Debian dual boot machine. I have been persuaded to go for Ubuntu as a Linux-only box, running Win7 as a virtual machine. I had some help setting it up with two discs in a Raid1 array, and it works pretty well. One of those discs is, I notice, set up as bootable.

But.... it is causing a major headache in respect of USB when emulating windows. I cannot use devices such as my USB printer at present, and I have an urgent task which requires printing capability and Windows. I have spent time trying to sort the USB problem without success and have decided to take an alternative route for the present.

I have purchased two extra discs which are not included in the Raid array, with the intention of using one of them for a Win7 installation, making the machine dual-boot for now. Eventually the intention is to revert to Linux only with a 4-disc Raid.

And don't know how to proceed. I formatted one of the new discs to NTFS using Ubuntu's Disc Utility, and tried to install Win7 on that disc. I get a warning that Windows cannot find a suitable disc on which to install. I've tried with XP as well, and this copies all its files before proudly announcing that there is no suitable disc space on this machine. Two new 1Tb discs and no space!

OpenSUSE Install :: Installing Machine With No DVD Drive

Jan 7, 2010

I'm trying to install on a machine that has a CD drive but no DVD (and is currently running 10.3). Following the procedure here I created a filesystem on the server and copied the DVD ISO to that. I boot with the network install CD and in the boot options I put in
install=hd:/dev/sda7/openSUSE-11.2-i586.iso
But then I get a red error diag saying
Could not find the openSUSE respository
Activating manual setup program

I go into the manual setup program, select hard disk, sda7, the iso file appears in the "Enter the source directory." dialog so I click OK. It does the "Loading the installation system" (or something, it's quick) and then errors with "No repository found". I have also tried sharing the iso file from a windows server and using network SMB but that didn't work. Tried mounting the install DVD (that I have used successfully before) on the windows machine, sharing it, and point the manual SMB install at that. Everything gives me "No repository found." I could use the Network CD to do an Internet install, but that seems unnecessarily slow and wasteful of bandwidth when I've already downloaded the DVD iso.
