Last nights upgrade of java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-43.1.8.2.fc13.i686 and java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin-1.6.0.0-43.1.8.2.fc13.i686 prevent the loading of Ameritrades Command Center.Downgrading to version 1.6.0.0-37 fixes the problem. I'll post the bugzilla number as soon as I get the chance to file it.

Yes, OpenJDK did have plan for the new java plugin. Actually it arrived with IcedTea B17 (Alpha version, of course). However, the new plugin support is only enabled in Fedora 13 build config. Now our task is simple, upgrade the OpenJDK to Fedora 13 build in rawhide, like what we have done to Firefox.

Reboot your Firefox 3.6 and it's done. I have tested with Citrix java client and RuneScape. Citix works fine, but the RuneScape crashed with my Compiz. Switch off Compiz and the RuneScape works fine, too. It is not a big deal for me since I do not play RuneScape. So basically it WORKS.

I use openSUSE 11.4 64 bits, KDE and FireFox 5.0. I regularly update. When trying to reach my bank, I get the following error: Code: icedteanp plugin error: Failed to run /usr/lib64/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk/jre/bin/java. For more detail rerun "firefox -g" in a terminal window. Is there anything I can do to remediate ? Does IcedTea everything that Java does?

I have both the openjdk-6-jre and sun-java6-jre versions of java installed on my Ubuntu Maverick desktop, with the sun version setup as the default. I was trying to load the web page,URL..., an amateur radio software defined receiver. I can load the page on Firefox run on XP in a VirtualBox machine, but when loaded on Firefox on my Maverick desktop, I wasn't getting any sound with openjdk, so I installed sun's and set it as the default. But all java applications cannot display Asian characters, they all show small rectangles in input boxes, in tip snippets, etc. But openoffice can show Asian characters slowly in its document area. The problem happens in both GUI application and applets. I didn't use text java application.

As suggested in the answer, I tried the alternatives command but it did nothing. I type the --display, nothing is shown, and --config does nothing.
I just installed FC13 and am having a problem with Java sites in Firefox. Everything is a fresh installation from the LiveCD (Gnome) and I'm dual booting with XP.
My laptop is an older Presario 2170us / 2G Celeron / 512 Ram / 40 G HDD.
If I go to the preferences of Firefox and disable Java, I don't have the issue but I can't open sites that are Java-intensive, such as AOL.
Once I re-inable Java and open Firefox, as soon as I get to AOL, I am dumped out of the Gnome GUI to the plain text list of startup items, then returned to the FC login screen and then I get back to the desktop.
When I open Firefox again, I get a page about the failure to open AOL... but I don't restore it...instead, I open a new site (such as this Forum), then close Firefox and reopen it.... but when I go to AOL, it happens all over.
As a recent (almost) convert from Ubuntu, I'd like to solve this. I used FC10 on my laptop but had too many SE-Linux issues (I couldn't do much without generating an error), so I went back to Ubuntu. Last nights updates of: java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-39.b18.fc13.i686 and java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin-1.6.0.0-39.b18.fc13.i686 no longer work with Ameritrade Command Center. I was really happy when OpenJDK got to a point where I didn't have to install Sun's Java, and it has been working great for quite a few months now, but today, when trying to bring up Command Center, it's telling me that there is a missing plugin, then points me to the Sun Java site. This is when using Firefox or Chrome. It may just be the plugin or the way it's positioned, so, hopefully this weekend I'll get time to investigate a little further. If not I'll downgrade to the previous version. <sigh> I really didn't want to install Sun's Java on my F13 boxes.

Now I am not a developer or anything just a user. My use-case are two :-
a. Running java programs on the desktop
b. Running java in the web-browser.
I *think* both of them get installed by default. Openjdk via the default-jre virtual package while icedtea due to some of the openjdk headless packages.

Notice the circular dependency at the end. From what I read the headless packages are basically for those systems where a server is running which does not have have a monitor, in which case I wonder why its installed in my system? My actual issue is of having the java for iceweasel. I did search for having java plugins and did not find anything except for icedtea-plugin to run java on my browser.

I did see the other solutions but most of them recommend downgrading both the openjdk and icedtea packages to the ones in testing rather than in unstable.
