Installing Ubuntu Studio failed automatic configuring the network so I need configure it manually. The computer ask for a DOMAIN NAME but I never had configured any Domain. Actualy I had another ubuntu computer. I know the mane of that computer but how can I get the DOMAIN NAME from the other computer?

Work computer, dual head 1280x1024
External USB audio and bluetooth audio
Home computer, dual head 1280x1024, 1080p

Basically, when I dock the box in either (1) or (2), I want to automagically get the right xrandr settings for the different screen geometries and the right audio routing.
What scripts, etc. are responsible for the inscrutable default behavior?
Are there packages for customizing this?
If I wanted to roll my own, what is the right library to use to catch the hotplug events?
Are there detailed instructions for Suse 11.2, anywhere, on installing a hardware dial-up modem and configuring it to get an Internet connection?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.1 and am trying to get packet capturing working for my Bluetooth dongle using hcidump.From what I've read, libpcap must be compiled to enable Bluetooth sniffing and given that hcidump isn't finding a single packet, I'm guessing the version Ubuntu has installed for me isn't compiled with bluetooth support.So I downloaded a newer version of libpcap and installed the bluez header files. Configured libpcap and it gave a "Yes" for bluetooth support. It is now installed and sitting in /usr/local/lib/. Now I'm trying to compile hcidump to use this lib rather than the system default but I can't figure out how...I've read that GCC can be passed the -lpcap flag to set the path but I haven't figured out how to do this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running Debian Squeeze on my net book ( ASUS 1000PE ) with an Atheros wireless nic. It has been running fine for months automatically connecting during boot to my hidden network but all of a sudden no dice.
If I use the Gnome network manager and "connect to a hidden network" and I am all set but when I am at the command prompt ( which is how I have it set to boot to) it is a few more steps. How can I get it to automatically load. I did not have any scripts set up before so I assume it is a service I need to turn back on that was turned off in error.
I've been tasked with setting up a RHEL FTP server to mirror one we currently have. From what I've read, I need to install and configure VSFTPD and then configure IPTables. From what I've been able to come up with, I need to follow the steps in this article to install and setup VSFTPD. Is this a good complete article to follow you think?Also, how do I copy the iptables config from that server to my new one? I think that iptables on our current server only allows certain IPs or blocks certain IPs (not sure which), so I need to have it do that on my new server as well

I've seen others here post queries about this, and I'll tell you what it was in my case: our DSL modem's DHCP server returns its own IPV4 address as the DNS server. When I looked at /etc/resolve.conf, I saw "nameserver: 192.168.50.254" on the last line -- the IPV4 address of our DSL modem. I manually inserted "nameserver" lines for our ISP's two actual DNS servers, and everything magically started working. Why this should confuse some software under Linux, but not other software, is a mystery. It also seems to be Gnome-specific (I didn't have this problem with OpenSuse 11.3 and KDE 4).
Ask if they're using Gnome, and ask them to check resolve.conf. A lot of DSL modems and home/small office routers return their own IP address (i.e., the same as the gateway address) for the DNS server on a DHCP query. The solution is to manually edit resolve.conf and put in your ISP's DNS server addresses manually. Incidentally, just my opinion, but Network Manager needs to make this an option. Under Windows, for example, you can select "automatically assign DNS" or you can enter them manually, even if you're using DHCP. It'd be nice if Network Manager permitted that.
Is there anyway to install Aptana Studio in Ubuntu 11.04 other than eclipse plugin, like an actual install into the system. Currently all I can do is run it from a folder but that is starting to get very tiresome.

My Windows installation is in /dev/sda1, and my partition with all my files are in /dev/sda5. I am not sure if that is supposed to be that way, but in the "Drive/Partition Info" section it say sda1 starts at 63, while in the "Boot Info Summary" section it say that sda5 "starts at sector 63" too.
I have downloaded ubuntu studio 10.04 and burn it into a cdrom. Is there any way in installing some software packages in ubuntu studio 10.04 in my ubuntu?
View 9 Replies View RelatedHas anyone tried that? I have a Dell Studio 1555 running 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10 for about 2 years with almost no issues but I plan to upgrade it straight to 11.04 64-bit (using fresh install because I also want to format the HDD and partition it in a different way).
What I'm reading in the web is though a bit discouraging as there seem to be a lot of issues with 11.04 running on this particular Dell model. Quite a shame as Dell is supposed to provide good experience on Linux since they had been selling laptops with Ubuntu preinstalled (or they used to...).

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?

A few minutes ago I was using google chrome when suddenly the scroll-lock indicator on my keyboard turned on... I pressed the scroll-lock key, but nothing happened, the light remained. I am totally new to Linux and have just installed ubuntu 10.10. After configuring the network interface via dhcp I started getting these messages that come in so frequently I can't configure anything else.

The installation is on a VM on Hyper-V.
I got a Dell Studio 1555 preinstalled with Vista and it already had 3 Primary Partitions. I needed to install Fedora Core 9 on this machine and to organize my HDD(500 GB)
I had two options:
1) Either to create a fourth primary partition
2) Create an extended partition with a number of logical partitions
I chose the option 2. I want to know if i make some free space by deleting one of the logical partitions, can that free space be used for installing Fedora ?
Also how to proceed with the installation?
I just installed suse on this computer, and am wanting to allow other computers to store files on it as a file server. I was reading the online manual and in the personal file preferences, it shows an option to enable 'share public files over network'. The problem is I don't see that option when I open up file preferences. All I see is an option to allow sharing using bluetooth, nothing about sharing over the network. When I look in the network I can see the computer running suse, but when I try to connect to it, it says 'unable to mount drive: connection refused by server.'

Ok, so then I run:

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have 3 virtual machines set up. 2 are servers and one is a client. On one of the servers I have installed apache, mysql, and php and mod_ssl. I can get to the web site on the server from my client system. I can even get to the info php site--the screen that shows everything about php (it's purplish!) I can also get to the secure https site. The one thing I can't do is get my table to display.I have set up a new user in mysql. I have granted that user all privileges. I have created a table on a new database in mysql. I then set up php code within html code But every time I try to go to my test.php site it only gives me the header. It obviously cannot find the table array. This is the code and someone already told me it looked right to them. So I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

I have been happily running the (always latest) version of PolarCloud's Tomato software on my LinkSys WRT54G for about 2 years now. I am looking for a way to setup a Proxy Server on my Tomato-based router to use from a remote machine somewhere in the web cloud.The reason for wanting to set this up follows. I normally run Squid on a Ubuntu 8.04 box, which I use while I am away from my LAN at home to browse the net (I like to keep things between me and my ISP, as much as possible . I rely on my proxy server on a daily basis. The way it works is I SSH into my Ubuntu box, and forward squid ports. I then point my browser to the proxy on my box. For various reason, however, I would like to set it up so that I can also do this via my router. So, I would like to be able to ssh to my router (I can already do this), forward the proxy ports, and surf the nets happily via my router at home. I am happy to use existing solutions (if possible), such as privoxy or squid, and am also open to setting up a custom-based solution, as may be necessary.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a desktop that has a d-link DWL-520 wireless card, which was working under Windoze. Today I installed Centos 5.4 on the system , which went cleanly. I then used Network Configuration to set up the wireless card. I specified to use DHCP, set the SSID and authentication password. When I tried to activate the card I get these error messages

The hardware manager seems to have correctly identified the card and chipset, (Intersil Prism 2.5) and installed driver hostap_pci which came with the distro. This web site seems to suggest that this is the correct driver: [URL] searching forums I've found a few references to these errors, but they were from several years ago, and for different distros and cards. I did find a reference to using Network Manager to configure the card instead of Network Configuration. I started the NM service and configured a connection using it instead, but still no luck.
