I have added a manual entry to /etc/grub.d/40_custom and ran update-grub and the entry is added to /boot/grub/grub.cfg OK. But when booting the entry is not appearing. I am a bit stumped trouble shooting this as there are no errors.

I installed the kernel update just last night and when I went to turn on my computer today my entry to Win 7 was gone.I am able to boot into Lucid with ease but what happened to Windows 7 all of a sudden? I was using it just y-day and restarted to boot into Lucid to catch up on any updates.
It also appears that my 1 TB HDD isn't appearing either. Kernel update gone bad?
Having just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 from 10.10 I noticed that my Grub menu had not upgraded. The upgrade was not as straight forward as it should have been as the PC hung at the end of the installation resulting in a reboot and running dpkg in safe mode to get it all back up and running.
To fix the incorrect grub menu.lst file which was not updating, I renamed the original file and then ran sudo update-grub. It generated a new and correct file. However, my Windows partition was not listed as a Grub menu option.

I currently use Ubuntu full time, but on my new one I am planning to dual-boot. My new computer will have a 500GB HD and 4GB Memory. I plan on using Ubuntu more than Windows, specifically for internet applications etc. Windows I plan on using for media and such. I will be partitioning the hard drive manually, and would like to know how much room I should give each OS, how to create a large section for all my files to swap (how does swapping work?) and any other partitions I need to make for recovery. I've read the Ubuntu and Windows "How to Dual-Boot" tutorials, and I still feel kind of lost on a general size for partitioning each section.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have booted from the .iso cd I made on my Mac last night and was tempted to install it on a 6gb partition that I have on my main HDD but was a bit scared to go past the fourth (or so) step in manual installing where I pick that partition and *do what?* Is it going to install the OS on that partition and leave everything else alone to give me a dual booting PowerMac? It doesn't quite say. I am fearful of screwing up my little ol' machine. Can anyone direct me to something that gives a step by step in manual installation on an already created (HFC+) partition to create a dual booting PowerMac?

Is there any way to disable it, or make it automatically boot whichever entry is selected by default? I only have one operating system installed, so there's not much of a point to having to press enter every time my computer starts up.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had tried many distros over the years but settled on Ubuntu for the last two or three, unfortunately the new version of Ubuntu (Natty) has prompted me to make the change again. To keep access to all my Ubuntu docs e.t.c. I installed Fedora 14 on a seperate partition and hey presto, there's the Ubuntu partition for me to read from, problem is that my laptop still just boots straight into Fedora, this is ok on my laptop but I wanted to make the switch on my desktop as well which has the wife's Windows partition on it, not being able to boot into that would cause eruptions! The problem is that Fedora hasn't installed a Grub menu.
On advice I typed this:-

I just installed archlinux to try it out and need to add the entry to Grub.
I formated the hard drive with the a root partition for arch of 42Gb and ubuntu can see it perfeclty.
When I was installing arch I made a mistake and installed grub again, overwriting my previous grub with my ubuntu and windows entries.
So I fixed and got my working grub back with SuperGrubDisk, but now I want to add the ARCHLINUX entry to Grub and dont know how. I have added the previous entries from the grub that ARCH installed and moved the initrd and vmlinuz files to the /boot directory on ubuntu, but it doesnt work. I did a similar thing with Acronis True Image rescue cds(to avoid having to insert the cd in order to use it) and it worked like a charm, but I am lost in this one.
Here are my partitions, sdb is the one where all my partitions and files are (sdb5 is where ARCH is), the other 2 are backups:

I am a brand new Ubuntu user that just tried to install on an old PC using the 10.10 desktop edition.During installation, I hit an error that the bootloader could not install, and after reading about it on the forums, opted to attempt to install it manually after. I have followed the tutorial located here,[URL].. on reinstalling GRUB2 from the liveCD, which I assume means to boot with the installation CD and select try Ubuntu (given the only other option is install, which I have tried twice) everything up to step 5 in that tutorial seems to run successfully, and I am given a message it is installed, but then when I reboot the system it does not open the GRUB2 menu, rather the CLI interface, which suggests there is no grub.cfg
So I am unable to refresh at the GRUB menu because that command is not recognized by the CLI (and it may not help if I am missing files, so I might have screwed up reinstalling them in step 5, or maybe the "Try Ubuntu" terminal doesn't alter the computer like I thought?)
Followed steps 2-5 and purged/reinstalled grub now it boots as it should, NO idea where it was messed up.[URL].. I had 9.10 running in raid1 and upgraded my hardware (cpu, mb, memory etc) and wanted to do a fresh install of 10.04 to get updated. After following the various guides online such as [URL]...It begins to load grub and drops to a "grub> " shell. Which I have to do the following to get it to boot.

Then it boots up normally and I can use it like any other desktop. I've been over my grub.cfg and /etc/defaut/grub files and cannot find the issue. At this point I'm wondering if the fact it's a raid1 setup is keeping grub from finding it's files.

I had 250gb hard disk with dual boot, xp and ubuntu 10.10.Yesterday, i tried to upgarde my ubuntu 10 to 11 from a live cd....b4 doing so, i used a win software EasyBCD to fix the mbr but it didn't work properly..and i ignored it(my biggest mistake)and deleted the ubuntu partion from the windows device manager. It just displays "Booting from Live CD" for few minutes and again displyas the same above error.What should i do now?Its ok if i m not able to recover my data back...i hv sycnd my docs on the internet.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a pc where there was redhat installed, and I decided to put ubuntu in dual boot.The installation went ok, but now I can't log in with redhat anymore. RH was installed on a RAID partition, and I installed ubuntu on an additional HD.
Now I have two problems:
a) I cannot boot red hat, since there is no such entry in the grub
b) this machine had several users, that now cannot access it remotely anymore.
Below you can find the output of fdisk -l and the grub.cfg files, the old red hat one, and the new one created by ubuntu. Not that in any case I cannot reinstall redhat, since there are other people using the machine.

I was cleaning old kernels from Grub menu, all sorted except for a vista entry that i could not delete. Ran this line which I found,"sudo chmod -x /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober", to remove unwanted entries, now only the linux entry left in Grub menu, windows 7 entry gone. The vista entry was from an old install which is not there anymore. Running 10.10 at the moment which is dualbooted with win7.

I have installed ubuntu 9.10 and everything was working fine. Just a minutes ago a window popped up telling me that a complete update couldn't be completed, and asked me to go on with a partial update. I did it and then a window popped up (I think it was debconf running) asking me if I wanted to delete phpmyadmin database configuration or if I wanted to keep it... seemed like the updater was removing quite a bunch of packages!
After that I was presented with a long list of packages to be removed (among them apache2, php5, linux headers, etc.) I thought it was going to remove them in order to reinstall them latter, so I let it go) but now there's no ubuntu entry in the grub menu, so I had to boot with windows! Right now I'm downloading ubuntu 9.10 livecd to give it a try...
My problem is this, I decided to try Pardus since I had the disk space available and learned that it never created a entry for Ubuntu 9.10 64-Bit. I have tried many different boot options and have only gotten it to show the first black and white bootsplash but never can continue to boot. Is there a option I am forgetting to add via Pardus's GRUB editor or is it something else?

Is it possible to remove the entry 'Other operating systems' from the Grub menu display? I mean that it can be commented in menu.lst,but will it affect other OS(Win XP in my case) in any way?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI currently dual boot and wish to know how to remove the Windows partition/drive while still allowing Ubuntu 9.04 to load safely as my main OS. I know how to restore windows partition by;
If MBR gets damaged boot from MS Windows Xp disc, Select "R" for "recovery console", select main windows installation drive (admin password usually nothing, just press enter) and type "FIXMBR" this will allow you to boot windows again, but Ubuntu partition will be unbootable and require installing ubuntu again to dual boot.
But this leaves Ubuntu partition Un-bootable as it removes the grub menu, how would I do the same for Ubuntu and make window partition un-bootable so I can remove it?
Ubuntu's update manager recently updated the Grub menu.lst file. It let me decide if I wanted to keep my old menu.lst or the new one. After deciding that I was fine with the new one, I found out that I can no longer boot into Windows 7. I had previously edited menu.lst so that Windows would be at the top of the list, however, I didn't notice that this had put it into the automagic update area, and I realize now that I should have just edited what the default number was instead of moving around the entries.
Anyways, I can no longer access my Windows 7 OS via Grub, and I was wondering what sort of fix I can have for this. I've tried running update-grub, but it hasn't fixed the problem. The Windows bootloader is on the first partition of the only hard drive, as far as I can remember.
I followed the instructions from this post to reorder my boot options. But somehow I was stupid enough not to copy the windows entry, as indicated (I was mainly following only terminal instructions and such).Now I have a grub menu without my Windows 7 entry, please tell me there is a way to restore it.

I have Recently downloaded Fedora 15.|64bit| & I Think its a very good distro. However I Realised Once My Pc Restarted My Windows 7 Was Removed from my boot entry.
