Does anybody how to open .evt files exported from a Windows System Event Log?? I've searched the forum and googled around but I can't see anything related to .evt files on linux.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with my hard drive. Windows can't even open it. I run DSL linux and successfully moynted the drive so I can view my file structure. I thought I just connect my other windows HD, mount it and then just copy all the folders I need. Unfortunatelly I'm getting cp: cannot create directory blabla - read-only file system. Is there a way at all to copy NTFS files in Linux?

When I try to open any nfs-mounted file using OpenOffice, I get a pop-up window titled "Document in Use". The text of the message is:
"Document file 'abcde.odt' is locked for editing by:
Unknown User
Open document read-only or open a copy of the document for editing." I then have three options - <Open Read-Only>, <Open Copy>, & <Cancel> If I cp any of these files from the mounted directory to my home dir (not mounted), I can open them without problem.Also, my firefox & thunderbird date are in this mounted directory as well (sym links to ~dan/.mozilla & ~dan/.thunderbird). Both of these apps hang when trying to open, leaving two processes behind that need to be manually killed. Again, cp'ing the data out of the nfs-mounted dir onto a local dir resolves the issue, so I am 100% confident there is nothing missing or corrupted in the firefox &/or thunderbird data...

server:/nfs/dan/Documents /home/dan/Documents nfs defaults 0 0
relevant entry in server's /etc/exports:
/nfs/dan/Documents client(rw)
I have a while(1) loop, and the error is: glibtop: open (/proc/stat): Too many open files This error occurs after about a half hour to an hour of running. I've tried running this multiple times, both with using glib_close() at the end of the loop, using glib_init() and glib_close() at beginning/end, and just using glib_init(). The strange thing is these have no effect on the actual glib_get functions.

Is this an expected behaviour ?? Can I change it to be shown for all sorts of windows irrespective of open/closed states ??

How do you convert Open Office (ODT) documents to Text files?
I have made a report using libre office. Now I wish to continue editing the document using lyx (latex front end). So the ODT file needs to be saved as some .tex file.
I don't see an option to do this in File menu (export/save as). So is there any other plugin to do this?
I just installed the nmap for port scanning and then run ./configure , make , make install command respectively. It works and then I successfully installed nmap under /usr/local/bin . nmap is a executable file not .exe . so my question is how can I open it .

I can connect to my network shares fine using "Connect to a Server" & bookmark with the file browser, however when I use OpenOffice writer Spreadsheet to open/save files the shares disappear in the"Open/Places". Is this a bug in Ubuntu or Open Office? Is there an update/fix?

I made a mistake last night playing with gparted and lost my E drive, which had all of my music, games and movies plus is where my Ubuntu install was. I then ended up reformatting the drive with windows and reinstalling Ubuntu 9.10.My question is how can I put my windows files on my E drive without going through the hassle of reinstalling windows.
I have a 20g IDE drive where my windows install is, windows and Ubuntu both tell me this drive is failing, (I have used it for booting since 2002, so I am not that concerned with it), another 40g IDE drive for more storage and a 160g SATA drive where Ubuntu is again installed. I want the SATA drive to be my main boot drive now, so how can I clone my windows boot to the other drive. I tried gparted but could not figure it out. I have gparted burnt to cd, booted with it and just don't understand how to use it.Also, if I clone this boot drive to the SATA drive, do I need to change jumper settings on my 40g to master when I take out the 20g drive.20g master and 40g slave on first IDE channel and 2 CD devices on second IDE channel and SATA drive on first SATA connection. I read somewhere that it is better to keep the cd devices on another channel than the disk drives.
I have a program running on my server which I want to restart in the event that it ever crashes. Someone suggested "Watchdog" to me, but it appears to me that watchdog restarts the whole system, not the program. I couldn't find much documentation for it. Another suggestion I was given was crontab, except that I don't want to relaunch the program every 60 seconds, as it doesn't run on screen or anything, it forks itself into the background after launching it. Perhaps a bash script that would check to see if the program were running or not, and if it weren't, relaunch it? Not sure how to do that, I've never written bash. In any case, I just want to keep this program running full time.
View 6 Replies View RelatedEver since 9.04 or thereabouts, I have noticed that it's impossible to change individual system event sounds in System -> Preferences -> Sounds. It only gives me a few lame choices of "themes". While it used to be possible to define my own sounds for startup, shutdown, new e-mail, etc, I can't find ANY dialog to facilitate this in newer versions of Ubuntu.
A question: HOW do I do this without having to hack apart my stock system sounds? There should be a way, but google and forum searching turns up nothing.
A comment: Ubuntu continuing to "nerf" their dialogs like this is infuriating, especially when the underlying system works so well. I actually don't know if Ubuntu or Gnome is responsible, but either way taking away rock-bottom basic functionality like this only hurts the OS and Linux's cause.
I was turning off my pc and my brother pulled out his sd card while the pc was shutting down. Now when I try to boot up I can't boot into my ubuntu partook it just hangs and then comes up with inittramfs. I can boot into my windows partition just fine. I also tried rebooting with the sd card in the slot but same thing. I managed to load up a live disc but have no idea what to do next if I want to save my old partition (if it can be saved) otherwise as a last resort ill have to overwrite the partition.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThey have pictures and documents everywhere so I figured I would just backup their entire HDD onto my external one and let them go in and transfer them back off. I keep proper backups so this isn't how I normally do things. I have done similar things in the past with dieing HDD's and Knoppix but I have never had this issue. I burned a CD using the latest ISO and Ubuntu seen both the main HDD and my external. I just copied all the contents of the main HDD over to the external. All went well and I could browse and view all the files from the external HDD after the transfer using the live CD. Unfortunately I am having an issue seeing the external HDD in Windows. As soon as I hook the drive up - windows says I need to Format it(Which I won't do obviously). But if I boot the live CD I can still see and use the files. How do can I get windows to see the drive and files without destroying data?

Is there a way I can open in in the terminal that might give me a error code so that I might be able to figure out how it works.
I have openJDK and Sun JDK install, both are indicating to be the most recent version.
I get errors like this, all the time:
