I have to setup a WiFi network for a hotel. There are several possibilities, but for me the best one is to setup a open Wifi network with web authentication for single user. What is the best solution in terms of compatibility, security, reliability, etc? I don't know many solution for web authentication, only the RADIUS project.
View 1 RepliesIve been using fedora 11 fora few months now and suddenly today after I booted up fedora network authentication(the little icon that lets me choose wifi networks) isnt showing up in the upper right hand corner which isnt that big of a problem but the fact that its on start up applications and its not wondering is what Im wondering about but on top of that my internet doesnt work at all.It will work for a little bit after boot then die and when I go to network authentication and network manager no wifi networks show up and I have about 5 around my house not including my own which is also what ive been wondering.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to connect my Debian Squeeze machine to my school wireless network with wpa_supplicant.
I think the network uses 802.1X authentication, because when the other students connects to the network for the first time in Windows they enter their username and password then the connection is established. I have asked the the IT staff but they do not known what 802.1X, PEAP EAP etc. is and just say "Enter the login details in the box!".
If I bring a Windows 7 machine to school and successful connects to the network, is it then possible for me to extract the information [and extract a certificate if used on the network] from Windows somehow so i can setup the wpa_supplicant.conf correctly on Debian?
The information I want to extract is which protocols are used, like PEAP,MSCHAP etc.
When my router switches off... the wifi signals go off... then why the hell ubuntu keeps on connecting to that very wifi like hell and when doesnt connect shows the prompt to manually connect... with the wifi key already filled in... whats the use of saving the key when it has to ask the question from me either to connect or not?? and if its isnt available... just wait when its available.. and for the prompt,i have only option to cancel(because wifi isnt available at that moment if i select connect it again tries to connect like hell..which it cant) and if i cancel it wont auto-connect when wifi does get available! what the heck?
Windows has this done the right way... when the wifi isnt available.. it dissconnects silently.. and when it becomes available connects silently.. why isnt this been done this way in ubuntu??
Ive attached an image..one can see in the image that it says "authentication required by wireless network" when there isnt any.. as router has gone down!
And the second thing i want to report is that there is no way to report this bug from ubuntu... the launchpad.net talks of going through bug reporting process which is done against a definite package... now how does a user know which package would be causing this error?? there should be a more clear process of reporting such bugs to ubuntu team... which a common man using ubuntu( ubuntu says its most user friendly of all distros right?) can report..

I have installed Wireshark on my box, and have a working usb adapter. How can I make my Ubuntu act like a router, so I will be able to snif packets through Wireshark?

It tries to connect and then comes back with a request for reentering the passphrase. I have had this once before in a pub. The way I read this the driver is getting confused how to authenticate.

1) /etc/pam.d directory files common-password, common-auth, common-account
2) /etc/login.defs - PASS* fields
I know the fields that need to be changed but what I could not find was
a) commands that change these options similar to useraddusermod and so on but those which can change system wide settings
b) API that can change these options (C API)
I have almost accepted that there in fact aren't such things. You have to manually update the files. I would prefer not though.So I am asking here as last attempt to find such commandsAPI. Please let me know if they are available.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have already managed to connect to my corporate wireless network which uses WPA Enterprise/PEAP along with an identity and a password using my *Android* phone.
Unfortunately, I am unable to do so via Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop. The issue that I observe is that the 'Wireless Security' tab of network manager has 3 options MSCHAPv2, MD5 and GTC for Inner Authentication. But there is no option for 'None' - which is what my Android phone specifies.
I tested whether this difference was responsible by explicitly specifying these 3 authentication options on my android phone and with any of the 3 selected, the wireless connection was unsuccessful. So I confirmed that this phase2 or inner authentication needs to be set to None in order to be successful. But network manager doesn't seem to allow a none or empty option. Should I open a bug on this ?
Do I need to manually setup wpa_supplicant.conf and /etc/network/interfaces ? The latter is a long winded procedure and I am uncertain about the 'side-effects' it can have with the network manager applet.

I am wondering if it is possible to set my laptop to autojoin open wireless networks. I like traveling and it popped into my head. I am a novice linux user, long time windows user. I know its possible just how. like a terminal script or just a check mark somewhere. i broke my right hand and arm in a motorcycle wreck recently.
This is what I have... An existing network with about 2 dozen Linux servers, varied distros, and about 3 dozen workstations, the vast majority of which are Windows XP pro, but there is one Windows Vista business, two Ubuntu, one Mac, and soon to be a Windows 7 pro. User accounts vary across all servers. There are 4 samba servers hosting different file shares.
This is what I need to do... I must centralize the user password database for all workstations if possible, if not, at least for all the windows workstations. I also need the user passwords for the samba file shares to be synchronized with those of the workstations. I need to have the workstation/file-share passwords expire every 90 days. I also must centralize the user passwords for all Linux Servers, but this can be done separately and I know there are tools like Kerberos available for this.
Is this possible to do with so many user accounts already existing in so many different places on the network, or would this "centralized authentication" require new user accounts to be created across the network?
If this is possible, what tools/services are the easiest and fastest to set this up with? As usual, I have an urgent deadline looming over me for this project and am trying as hard as I can to avoid the company slipping back into the realm of M$ or other proprietary software to accomplish this. Keep in mind, I don't need any additional services, such as roaming profiles, or anything like that. I really just need a centralized password database that can be referenced by Windows, and the Samba file shares.
My work has got a new Sharp MX-1800N network printer. The setup requires user authentification, one password for printing b&w, another for printing color. However when they try to set up my netbook running ubuntu desktop 10.04 they don't get it to prompt for a password, which makes the printer reject the printout. How do you fix this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to wirelessly connect to my network for weeks now. My netgear dongle is fully working. I have installed the driver using ndiswrapper. I can see my network and signal is excellent; everything is working perfectly. When I try to connect it thinks about it but never connects. The password is fine; it works great with other computers. decided to have a go with wicd, so got rid of the Gnome network manager and installed wicd. Adaptor and wicd appear to be working brilliantly EXCEPT I cannot connect. wicd tells me its a bad password. Password fine because it works brilliantly with every other device I connect to my network. If I remove security from network, it tells me it cannot get address, even though it sailed passed that with no problem when there was security. I have searched the internet for a solution to this problem time and time again. Lots of people seem to be having this problem, but no one knows the solution. Is there a solution? It happens with both Ubuntu 10.04 LTS v1 v2 and Ubuntu 11.04. What the heck is going on. This happens with WPA WEP and anything else I try to use
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have no problem with my wireless network at home, or visiting friends, but it won't connect to public, open, unsecured WiFi networks, eg hotels, trains, ships.I'm using Ubuntu v9.10, NetworkManager applet v0.7.996, on a Dell Inspiron 1750 laptop.If I left click on the NetworkManager, the available wireless networks are displayed and I can see the relevent open networks, named as expected and shown without the lock icon. I click on the relevent entry, watch a spinner for 30 seconds or so and then it drops off and I have no connection. I have a problem with my wifi adhoc network which I previously had under Windows. I go to network connections, edit connection ,wireless,add then change to adhoc then I cannot press the add button as it is not highlighted, I don't want any security so have not enterd any WEP or WPA information, also How do I do a scan for wireless networks/devices in my area?

My wired connection is fine right now and when I check the network connection applet, it display active information of eth0. However, when I click the Configure button, the Network Connection window appears but there's nothing in the Wired panel. Should there be a eth0 in that panel? I remember I had one before, but after I messed with some configuration of VPN, my network became unstable and I remove the Network Manager to try to solve the problem. Since then, there's nothing in my Network Connection window, though I can still connect to my router with eth0. Now even after I reinstalled the Network Manager, I still don't get anything.

The Ubuntu 8.10 help tells me to open NetworkManager, but the only thing I can find is 'Network Configuration' in System>Preferences. If I try to run NetworkManager in usr/sbin as a root, nothing happens whatsoever. nm-tool lists several available Access Points for my WiFi antenna.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo recently we switched Internet Providers. While we had Bellsouth, my laptop would connect to our wireless internet flawlessly everytime. However, we just switched to Charter because it was both cheaper and faster. But now, my laptop will not connect to our wireless. If I hook it up to an Ethernet cord, it connects just fine. I believe they gave us a new modem/router or whatever it is that sends out the wifi signal.
I have tried to connect with this laptop on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Backtrack 4. On Ubuntu and Linux Mint, after I enter the correct WEP key, it sits there and tried to connect for a minute or two, but then the window pops up asking for the WEP key again, even though it's still filled out.
When I tried connecting on Backtrack, it told me that it could not obtain an IP address.
when it boots it doesn't ask me for my password (not the one to WiFi network, but the one to 'default key base') and because of that I can't connect to my WiFi network. The network itself is working fine. So i restart my computer (sometimes I have to restart it 15-20 times) and finally Ubuntu asks me for my password I type it in and everything works fine. what should I do with this?
