CentOS 5 :: Updated To 2.6.18-164.1 UDEV Failed Udevd-event[1361]?

May 12, 2010

I haven't updated my centos box for almost about a year, my theory is if it ain't broke don't fix it.These last two weeks I've been replacing hardware, a motherboard, memory, processor, and a hard-disk. Everything worked fine with the current 2.6.18-128.1.10, but I decided that I should upgrade to the latest along with all the new packages. But in doing so I would need to recompile the driver module for the raid controllers, rr1740. So I recompiled them using the 2.6.18-164.1 build while I was in kernel 128. When I was done, I restarted the machine and when it booted to the new 164 kernel, it came back very long error messages but here's what I can remember off the top of my head.

We have a problem with udevd process. It keeps going increasing slowly up to 100% cpu and the only way we can sort it out is by stopping udev and starting it back up again or rebooting the server... :/ see below info on server, it is used to purely run PHP, mysql and other static content is being served from other servers:

Fedora :: Event Ids And Associated Sounds - Failed ?

Feb 11, 2010

With /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play set to --id='desktop-login' in the startup Applications dialog one expects a sound to play at login. This is not the case with fedora 12. I set the variable to --file=/home/me/sounds/myloginsound and I got sound.

I'm curious as to why the event id failed. I suspect that id was not linked/associated with any sound before fedora 12 was released. How does one troubleshoot sound event ids and their associated sounds in f12.

I'd like to get audio when I log out as well. I recall seeing a dialog box with events and associated sounds in f11 (or was it f10?) .... I don't see it in f12

1. Does anyone know which package adds that functionality?

2. In the absence of a GUI approach, how can this be achieved (with the terminal)?

CentOS 5 :: Udev Hangs After Upgrade To CentOS 5.4?

May 7, 2010

I have encountered the same problem as indicated in this post: "udev hang after upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4"[URL]... I'm testing the upgrade path to centos 5.4 on several virtual machines prior to upgrading our production systems. I have upgraded centos 5.2 --> centos 5.4 and centos 5.3 to centos 5.4. In both cases udev hangs after the upgrade. The following message is displayed on the console: "Starting udev: Wait timeout. Will continue in the background [FAILED]"

I found another related post: "udev hangs on boot for a long time, suspect pam_console_apply"[URL]..So, I booted by VMs using the "udevdebug" option to grub and received the same error message - "udevd-event [###]: run_program: Waiting ## seconds for output of '/sbin/pam_console_apply /dev/..."

In my /etc/ldap.conf file "bind_policy hard" is commented out. I added a line "bind_policy soft" as described in the post and my VMs booted fine. NOTE: This problem is not encountered with a fresh install of CentOS 5.4 and the "bind_policy hard" option in the /etc/ldap.conf is commented out as in the upgraded systems. What is really causing this problem and how do I get it addressed? I have a couple hundred systems to update from various releases of CentOS 5 to the latest current version 5.4. It would be nice to get this bug squashed..

CentOS 5 :: Udev Hang After Upgrade From 5.3 To 5.4?

Oct 30, 2009

I have just completed an upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4 (64bit) Now when the system starts it gets to Staring udev and then hangs for about 2mins before printing "Timeout" and then continuing.

At various stages during the boot process it just stops with no warning and takes a while to restart.

My boot time in 5.3 was about 50seconds, now with 5.4 it is about 4mins.

CentOS 5 :: 2.6.18-164 To 2.6.18-194 Udev Hang Freeze?

Aug 31, 2010

My issue is: I am "locked" on kernel 2.6.18-164, I just can't get my server up and running with any later release. It simply hangs at "Starting udev".

The hardware is:
MB: Asus M2N32-Deluxe
CPU: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 920 Processor
Boot FS: Ext2
RootFS: xfs
RAM: 4Gb

I have 2.6.18-194.el5 running on other machines.

PS: I'm about to install/update a fresh 5.5 disc for testing purpose anyway. I'll update here if it works.

CentOS 5 :: Get Centos To Recognize Updated Packages?

Jun 24, 2009

I have a copy of the DVD Iso for centos 5.3. I downloaded the updated packages to the Centos directory and then ran the repomanage perl script to remove the old files from the directory. I then ran the createrepo and the new iso image with the script code below.

baseDir=`pwd`
rhelBuild=`pwd`/dvd-iso-contents
rm -f CentOS_1.0.0.iso
echo "Updating repository"
dvd_discinfo=`head -1 $rhelBuild/.discinfo`
echo "$dvd_discinfo

[Code]...

I am using VMWare to test the build, so I have the cd pointing to the iso image. I get the CentOS to start up find and dandy asking the questions for the interactive boot. It gets thru the stage of checking dependencies and then when it starts to copy down the image to the "harddrive" that is when the problem occurs.

One of the updated files is file-4.17-15.el5_3.1.i386.rpm (file-4.17-15.el5.i386.rpm was removed using repomanage), but the loader is looking for the removed file. I've looked thru any dependencies, but nothing specific for the removed file, all are asking for /usr/bin/file with no specific version numbers. I have run a rpm -test on all the rpms, but haven't been able to look thru that to see if there is a specific request for the version.

I did try this, but it just moved on to the next file. I did not replace the file version, but then it found another problem that was the same as this, the updated file is in the repo, but it is requesting the old version. I looked thru the fileslist and others to see if maybe that was the problem, but they were updated to the new versions.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Advanced - TCP Segmentation Offloading & Udev?

Dec 23, 2009

I'm trying to disable TCP Segmentation offloading across the board in our datacenter to improve performance. Reading the history in the CentOS Bugzilla and the upstream's Bugzilla, they recommend doing this within the udev rules. See:[URL].. So, I created a new udev rules file that looks like this, as filename /etc/udev/rules.d/50-eth_tso.rules:

ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", NAME=="eth0", RUN+="/sbin/ethtool -K eth0 tso off"
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", NAME=="eth1", RUN+="/sbin/ethtool -K eth1 tso off"

[Code]...

Can anyone out there figure out just what I'm doing wrong - I've been struggling with this for about 2 hours trying to make it work, and simply can not figure it out - and would like to not resort to hacking the problem and adding the ethtool commands to /etc/rc.d/rc.local!

Checking the performance in ESXi it appears to be using 100% cpu.I have left it for half an hour and it does not progress and the only thing to do is to power cycle the VM.I have searched and found a few suggestions for kernel parameters but they did not make any difference. CentOS 5 :: Udev Hangs On Boot For A Long Time, Suspect Pam_console_apply?

Mar 24, 2010

I'm hoping someone knows about this one... I'm running the latest CentOS 5.4 with kernel 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 (x86_64).When I boot the machine, it gets to the udev starting bit, hangs for like 5 minutes, then prints a message "Failed, will continue in the background." Then it boots OK after that.I tried booting again with the kernel option (from grub) "udevdebug", and what I saw when it tried again was a million messages saying it was waiting for "/sbin/pam_console_apply" to return, but I guess it wasn't returning... ;) Again, after 5 minutes, it gave up and finished booting.Now, this host is an LDAP client.

I figured that may have something to do with it as it is likely that pam_console_apply tries to make an LDAP lookup, which is wrong, because networking hasn't even started yet. If I disable LDAP (by removing ldap lookups in nsswitch.conf), I get no pam_console_apply errors from udev and it boots quickly. But that's a bummer, I need LDAP on this box, and I don't want my boot time to be 7-8 minutes. ;)Presumably before, when LDAP was enabled and it waited 5 minutes and then notified me that it will "continue in the background", that it was eventually successful after networking started. LDAP otherwise works fine on this box, just like all the other servers we have.This is new behavior, I've not seen it with CentOS 5.3 and below. Has anyone seen this? Any hints on what I can do to avoid it? It seems like a pam bug or something, but I don't know for sure.

I have somewhere between 8 and 12 servers, spread amongst different webhosts, all running CentOS 5.3. Everything on the servers has been compiled from source:

I compile from source because I usually run ./configure to modify the source before installing. What would be the easiest way to keep the server software updated? I am considering creating custom packages from a server which I would keep up to date manually. Then use Capistrano or Puppet to install those packages on all of my servers.

OpenSUSE Install :: Suse 11.4-KDE Udevd-work Error While Booting

Jun 25, 2011

I am seeing a udev error message on booting that I have not seen before with LInux and which I cannot interpret. My Suse 11.4-KDE installation is fairly new. My system is a System 76 PanP4 Pangolin that originally ran Ubuntu.Uname -a returns: Linux linux-zcga 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. My video is a Geforce 9300M with an nVidia driver.A Google search turns up the fact that similar error messages have been reported with Fedora, Ubuntu, Meego and Gentoo. These frequently have had something to do with sound and in at least one case the advised correction was to reinstall udev. I can see where bugs were filed but with no clear response. Some of these go back several years, the most recent is within the last few months. I did not see a posting that involved Suse.

1.Can someone tell me what these error messages mean?
2.Does this pose a problem?Everything seems to work normally on my system once I am through the boot process.
3.If this is a problem how does one fix it?

Ubuntu :: Udevd-work Random Error On Boot On Raid0

I have a Raid0 setup (see below for details) connected to the ICH10R raid chip on my Gigabyte EX58-UD4P motherboard. On every second og third boot I get the following error:

Code:
udevd-work[157]: inotify_add_watch(6, /dev/dm-1, 10) failed: no such file or directory
udevd-work[179]: inotify_add_watch(6, /dev/dm-1, 10) failed: no such file or directory
The system halts for a seconds or two and then boots on like nothing has happend.

My setup is as follows:

Two 500gb discs in Raid0 on the ICH10R. The first partition 100 mb is a Windows 7 system partition (gaming etc.) and then a 300gb partition for the actual Windos install. Then Ubuntu 10.10 with /, /home, /swap and then five data partitions. Grub is on the Windows system partition.

Ubuntu 10.10 x64 installed via USB. No problems during install. Besides that I have 2x300gb dics on the Gigabyte built in raid controller. Installed with a Hackintos setup using Mac software raid.My fstab looks like this:

Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
