Ubuntu :: Downloading Package Information - Failed
Sep 15, 2010
Package Installer and Package Manager keep returning failed and hit but zero byte messages.. This has been going on since yesterday, and I've tried it on 3 seperate internet connections.. I really don't want to go back to Windows 7, but at this rate
When I go to System/Administration/Hardware Drivers I have an error message:Downloading package indexes failed, please check your network status. Most drivers will not be available. After that I get the Hardware Drivers window empty..My network is working fine so I don't know whats the problem
I tried changing the source to a few different ones and I picked "Select Best Server". Still getting the same msg. I am on a wired connection and there is nothing wrong with my connection.Anyone know the solution if not how do I install nvida drivers?
I was trying to open the Update Manager and this popped up... "Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ph.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_i18n _Translation-en, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'"
I have been experiencing problems with downloading the latest version Ubuntu 11 in my current Ubuntu 10.10 operating system.
I used the Update Manager and tried innumerable times but to no avail. It shows that my Internet connection is somewhat faulty. I have no problems with my Internet ironically.
I grudge to download the Live CD into my hard drive and then to manually burn it into a CD because I don't have one available in my hands. Is there any way to download Ubuntu 11 and install it successfully?
I want to know that like windows there is Internet download manager for fast downloading is there is any software package available in ubuntu for fast downloading?
Any website where I might be ale to download .deb package fr vlc media player for kubuntu. My kubuntu cannot connect to the net. So I have to use windows.

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 a couple days ago. I went to system settings, double clicked update manager, and this came up: could not initialize the package information an unresolvable problem ocurred while initializing the package information please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Type'-2011-05-10' is not known on line 1 in source list/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list'
after doing: $ sudo apt-get update i get lots of hits then: Hit [URL] pdates/multiverse Sources 99% [Waiting for headers]... and it just sits there. a reload in synaptic gives: downloading file 44 of 45 ... and it just sits there.
when i abort i get the following shown in error message: Failed to fetch http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/dists...tion-en_GB.bz2 Failed to fetch http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/dists/stable/Release Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I readded all my sources and ppa's on the upgrade but now they are disabled? Also I have a malformed line..Why would they be disabled if I changed them all one by one through software sources?

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 and everything was working fine until I tried to update. Now I can't get any packages, update, or even get into a package manager. All of these give me the same error. 'E:Malformed line 48 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse), E:The list of sources could not be read.' I looked into what this was and found the source list but have no clue what to change.code...

Also, its not letting me add/remove software through the command line nor software center. ANY IDEAS, SMART PEOPLE???
I reformatted my computer last night and put Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell Inspiron B130 laptop. I made and used the Ubuntu 10.04 live cd last night. Install was uneventful. Now I can't use update manager. I get this error:
Could not initialize the package information
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Read error - read (5: Input/output error), E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
I switched to ubuntu around two months ago, and I'm loving it, everything I could need and more in an OS. I've just recently stumbled upon a problem; I tried to add Playdeb.Net's source URL and this came up on my Update Manager window; "Could not initialize the package information. An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Malformed line 62 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)'" package and include the following error message:
Today, on Ubuntu 11.04, when attempting to update, this error message appeared in update-manager:
Code: An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/extras.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.[code]...........
I cannot update package information in Synaptic Package Manager. In terminal window it shows inability to connect to 10.3.2.1:8080 (http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid etc). If I point to this url in my browser I can access the files.
Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: installing package xen-4.0.0_21091_06-0.1.1.x86_64 needs 27MB on the /boot filesystemI seem not to be able to change the size of the /boot, but 11.2 loads okay but not 11.3There only 19MB left from 66 and I can't make it bigger, I hope there is someone thathas seen this. I would like to see some of the update with XEN.
When I try to check for updates and also when I try and press "reload" in the Synaptic package manager, I get this error: Failed to fetch [URL] Failed to fetch [URL] Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
Sometimes, I also get this red triangle with an exclamation point in my toolbar thing that tells me I have repository problems, or something along those lines. I'm assuming they're all related. I've been looking around, and I noticed people having similar errors and just being able to uncheck something in my Software settings, or something like that. In my case, I'm not exactly sure what to uncheck though, don't wanna screw anything up any more! I'm using 10.10, and I believe I'm using Maverick. I'm not sure what that means though. I've only recently started using Linux.
Whenever i go to the update manager and check for updates i get this
Failed to download repository information
Check your Internet connection. i am connected to the Internet and the connection is obviously fine because i am posting this, same thing happens when i go through terminal to i am currently running ubuntu 11.04
For some odd reason in wheezy it's not downloading the packages in the 'all' architecture, this leads to interesting issues when it comes to things like installing chromium and other packages that aren't built for one particular architecture. I've only noticed this in wheezy, and i'm not sure if this is normal. If there is any easy way to fix this, I'd be more than happy to hear. When i try to do an apt-get update, it only downloads from amd64 and not all. I've tried the mit mirror, and also the one shown there or well the default one but it still doesn't seem to be working right.
i am unable to open update manager when i open it , it gives back a msg stating that cannot initialize the package information. and here is the error msg.
'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
And when i tried with #sudo apt-get update
Reading package lists... Error! E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
and even i tried with deleting that file(security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages) but was unsuccessful.
I have done a scratch install of Ubuntu 11.04 (natty) on my PC with an unrecoverable error during the installation phase. However, I was able to boot the PC with Natty but my package manager and update managers are not working properly. I am pasting below the error message shown by package manager. Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/in.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_bina ry-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

Im fairly sure these are default sources that come with Maverick and would very much like to have these packages.
Whenever I go to update I press check and I get "Failed to download repository information Check your Internet connection." Well obviously I don't need to check my internet connection if I'm posting this thread. I am using Google Chrome and it's as fast as can be. When I run
I am beginner in Ubuntu. I am unable to install any software. For example, whenever I try to use Ubuntu software center to install VLC media player, it shows following notice: Failed to download repository information Check your internet connection
I searched on google about installing software on Ubuntu and tried to use the command I found for installing VLC media player on terminal. First I typed command sudo apt-get update And I get this on my terminal ----- Ign [URL] lucid Release.gpg ..... E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
Then I typed the following command to install VLC : sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-pulse mozilla-plugin-vlc Then I get the following information on terminal: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Couldn't find package vlc
