Debian Hardware :: Get Vga Display Connected Notebook Mainboard Show Screen?

Nov 10, 2015

I know about ubuntu. Not debian.I have installed debian 8 64bit on a notebook mainboard vga display only.During installation vga display worked. After restarting the lock up crypt hdd shows. After that debian login screen should show. It does not. Only the pointer shows.If I put the hdd in another note book, the debian login screen shows on the notebook's display. I then connect the vga display.

Then I can select settings, displays and mirror debian gui and gui will show on both displays. After restarting the notebook both displays show the debian gui. If I then put the hdd into the notebook mainboard, then the vga display will not show the debian login screen. The pointer shows. On ubuntu settings, displays, general option, I can set all displays. That option is not in debian 8. How do I get debian 8 to show the debian 8 login screen on the notebook mainboard vga display only computer?

Server :: Mails Not Sent By The Shop System?

Jan 12, 2011

We have an external server that runs HTTP/DB servers for out shop system.Then, there's our local, in-house infrastructure that runs a.. yeah... Exchange 2010.The shop system on the external server needs to send mails to customersrder confirmations, invoices, etc.). seing as sending them directly through the local MTA (Postfix) would cause mail delivery problems because of reverse DNS issues, i've set the Postfix MTA to act as a satellite to our in-house Exchange Server, so the Exchange sends the mail instead, giving recipient mail servers a valid reverse DNS lookup.

Now, mails sent by the (proprietary, uneditable) shop system are relayed correctly and sent to the target e-mail address.My problem is: Mails not sent by the shop system, but by our own PHP scripts which run on that same external servers, are NOT relayed properly.So the Exchange is fine with the mails sent by the shop system, but not the mails sent by our scripts.This is what i get in the mail.log:The successfully relayed mail sent by the shop system:Quote:

Ubuntu :: Launch A Script When A Display Is Connected?

Aug 8, 2010

I am currently thinking about buying a new computer; it is supposed to be a server kind of thing, at least most of the time. So basic HTTP, SQL I want it to run all day 24/7... but after looking for a good PC I got a idea... since any new PC supports HD Video and all I thought why not add something like Boxee to my little server... but then I thought it don't have to run Boxee all the time and the graphical user interface only needs to run when Boxee wants to run or dont I not need the XServer to run and display Boxee? Anyways Boxee should only lunch when a Display aka HD TV is connected and also turned on.

So my question is that even possible? To lunch a script if a TV is turned on and than start the XServer and Boxee (or some other Media Browser) with it or if not is there a workaround like some key combination or signal (power button on a remote control) that can lunch that script? And is there a script that will do this?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Check If Display Device Is Connected?

Feb 10, 2010

I am trying to write a script to turn my HTPC off automatically and turn it back on again at a specified interval.

I've got the turn on off bit sorted using /sys/class/rtc/rtc0/wakealarm but I want the script to not turn the machine off if say something is downloading, I am currently watching something etc and i dont think I will have any trouble with that.

But what I would really like to be able to do is tell if my TV is currently on. I dont think anything x11 related would work here and this may not even be possible. Does Ubuntu "know" if it's display device is powered on or not? if so can I interrogate this somehow?

After looking at this post [URL] .... poked around at the back of the monitor and found the DVI cable loose. Plugged it in tight and rebooted and Gnome desktop came up as good as ever.

Step b. , as it turns out, was someone had adjusted the monitor height resulting in the DVI cable coming loose but not getting pulled out entirely.

Hardware :: Display Settings Hosed If Second Monitor Is Connected On Boot-up

May 5, 2011

I'm trying to get my secondary display (DVI-Out) working on a laptop (built-in monitor & external display) and I'm afraid I made quite the mess of it installing the proprietary driver only to learn that my old ATI card is no longer supported and having to clean that up and reinstall the original distro driver!Anyways, I reverted back to the open source driver and all is ok. That is until I reboot. If I reboot with the DVI display connected then both displays are brought up in 640x480 res and look terrible.

What do I have to do to be able to leave my DVI display connected when I start up the machine and get it to render the way it does when I plug in the display after the machine is running?I suspect I need to create an xorg.conf file but these fancy modern Linuxes these days don't come with one (or maybe they no longer need it anymore).

Debian Hardware :: Upgrade The Infrastructure In Our Office (small Web Development Shop)?

Dec 4, 2010

I'm looking to upgrade the infrastructure in our office (small web development shop). I'm going to buy a small floor standing rack and in it we will have a dedicated firewall / VPN box, a web development server and a fileserver (for now). I intend to use Debian squeeze for everything.

My main question is what should I do about RAID? I've not used it myself before, instead relying on backups to removable disks. This time I want to do everything properly, and a measure of disk redundancy is required so I guess we will be going for RAID 1.

I'm looking at this [URL].. server which comes with an Intel ICH10R RAID controller on board, and also has an option to add a 3ware 9650SE-LP. The site says the Intel chipset is Windows only, so I guess the 3ware alternative is the way to go. The server also has two 3.5" hot swap drive bays. Could anybody advise me if the 3ware card is a good choice for use with Debian? Also, how can I monitor the health of the drives with standard Debian tools out of the repos? Any other RAID tips are also interesting for me.

Fedora :: XDMCP - KDM Connected But Black Screen

Feb 21, 2010

This applies to GDM as well, but I'm using KDM right now so:
Linux 2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.x86_64 #1 SMP x86_64

I setup XDMCP:
/etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc
[Xdmcp]
Enable=true
Willing=/etc/X11/xdm/Xwilling
Xaccess=/etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess

[security]
AllowRemoteRoot=true
DisallowTCP=false
/etc/kde/kdm/Xaccess (link to the xdm 'xaccess' file) includes:
* CHOOSER BROADCAST

In KDM settings I set it to 'no theme' and 'no custom background'. IPTables & SELinux are both off. The client & server are both on the same switch. I can connect successfully. But all I get is a black screen & an X cursor, never get to see the login prompt. Most things I find have to do with the inability to connect at all, but this connects. I'm having this problem on RHEL5.4, CentOS5.4, & Fedora 12. I'm troubleshooting it on Fedora though. I'm not able to even log in.

I must point out that for CentOS5/RHEL5 I got this working, but I didn't do anything differently that I know of. I just repeated the same process over again....but I'm using GDM on those. Is it possible that I may have to use GDM for KDE because it works with GDM? I'd like to get KDM working because that's what it's designed to do right? work the way it's configured. I've not had a chance to look into it with KDM since the time that I posted this thread.

Ubuntu Servers :: Unable To See Login Using Xvnc (when No Screen Connected)

Aug 27, 2010

I have a VNC connection running to my Ubuntu 10.04 server [URL]. This was running fine for a day or 2 after that, sometimes it worked and sometimes not. When it didn't work, I could connect with VNC (i got a gray window with the cursor) but no login screen was shown.

After some testing I now know what the root cause is. When I disconnect the screen from my server, I don't get the login screen. When I connect the screen (even if it is not powered) after a reboot, I can see the login screen. Next I was looking for some logging that could indicate some problems. I looked into "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" and there I see a difference when I connect/disconnect the screen. When the screen is disconnected, the log says:

Slackware :: Automating Xorg RandR Turning Laptop Screen Off If External Monitor Is Connected?

Jan 2, 2010

I have a netbook (Acer Aspire One) I'm running Slackware 13. and usually, I prefer to connect an external monitor. When I switch my machine on with the monitor connected, the display is duplicated on both screens and since I just want the netbook's screen to be off and only see the display on the external monitor, I can doxrandr --output LVDS --off

Great! However, it's a hassle to do this every time I log in and I'd like to automate the process if possible. I did some googling and I found that if you want to automate xrandr commands, you can put a script in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ (see this). I wrote the following script to automate my xrandr commands and since the Xsession.d directory didn't exist, I tried creating it. The script was called 45custom-xrandr_settings, as the one on the RandR wiki is called the same.

Code:
#!/bin/bash
# Check whether the external monitor is connected

Adjusting the resolution just makes the icons bigger but does not fix the problem. Is this a video card incapatablity maybe? Running ati x1650 pro. I am also using Hdtvs for monitors. Tried sony bravia 32 inch and hitachi plazma 42 inch. Svideo and dve to hdmi cables. both tvs and cables have the same problem.

Debian Multimedia :: Display Not Fitting Onto Screen

I am using xfce4 and in this image

The top bar only shows the bottom half. the bottom bar only shows the top half. i also can't see anything after the r in centre on the right. part of the initial picture on the left also does not display.

My thought is that the tv it has a resolution of 1920x1080 and this is causing the issue. i have this in my xorg.conf:

Code: Select allSection "Screen"
    Identifier     "Screen0"
    Device         "Device0"
    Monitor        "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth    24
    Option         "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0; 1920x1080_60 +0+0"

[Code] ....

The graphics card is

Code: Select all02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation C77 [GeForce 8300] (rev a2)

Changing metamodes to 19200x1200 doesn't change anything.

Fedora :: Using F11 - No Automatic Display On External Screen

Feb 11, 2010

Few months ago I stood on my netbook running F11 and broke the screen. I don't believe there's anything else wrong with it as the lights and fans act as normal when I turn it on. I hooked it up to a monitor but it doesn't automatically display on the external screen. So I have a pretty odd and possibly quite difficult request. Any step-by-step guide of which buttons to press after turning the machine on, in order to get it to switch to the external display? I just need something along the lines of, press enter, tab, type password, enter, press alt-a, down, down, down, enter, tab, etc. Another possible solution, a very long shot, would be a boot disk that defaults to an external screen?

Suddenly after logging in (GUI - LXDE desktop) the background screen is all what I can see and no menus, not even right click opens anything. Same in KDE desktop. All I can do is throw myself out with Ctrl Alt and F1. startx returns that the server is already running. All I can do is using (as root) "rm -rf /tmp/X0-lock" and then "startx --:1". That opens the GUI but only as root. What can I do that I can log in normally again? By the way I tried to reinstall but I only get to loading drivers and then everything stops.

Now (one week later) after start and login I could not see the panels anymore, I could start programs but those would not be displayed, I only saw the desktop. Ubuntu :: Invert Display On Laptop Screen?

Jan 3, 2010

I have a busted laptop, case that is. The internals are great. So I stripped the screen and built a large box. I used a cnc router to build a lid that would flush mount the screen, and have a lip of wood left to cover the metal edges of the screen.

Ok, what happened is that the measure twice cut once rule or one of its variants went into effect, and I put the hinge on the wrong side of the box. Normally I would say just flip the screen around, but one edge is wider than the other, so that will not do. I want have the hinge towards the couch so that I can tilt it up and be able to easily see the screen.

So I need a way to invert the screen, and I can't seem to find a way to do it. The coffee table is an Emachines N-10, and my video driver is the Nvidea one, because karmic told me my onboard card is not quite up to the task of the other one.

Ubuntu :: Display - Black Screen Instead Of Standby

Mar 21, 2010

Am currently using 8.10 (xubuntu). The machine's "issue" (I've searched for a reference, but the one I found was a forum thread with no answers) is that when the display is set to go to sleep after 8 minutes of idleness in the power manager, it projects a black screen instead.

I'm not sure what different 'power saving modes' a display/OS usually has, but in Windows, when set to 'go to sleep' the screen goes into standby, i.e something like 'no signal', and from what I've read a lot more power is saved in that mode than by simply showing a black screen.

It was the same when I was running 8.04 with a different graphics card, if that matters. Haven't been able to try a different display. Screensaver and timing and resume normal video out works ok.

Ubuntu :: Odd Screen Display - Unable To Login (10.04 LTS)

May 5, 2010

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and at first, everything was just fine. This issue came about yesterday, as far as I know, while my screen was locked. The login screen now displays only half of the original login screen (left side) and the other half (right side) is an odd view of a black background with a white box in the center (see this mock up). Another note of interest is that the right side pans as I move the mouse around the screen, as if the right-side view were a second view port to the login screen without displaying it properly.

I am not able to log in whatsoever. An incorrect password results in the standard error message. A correct password results in a temporary black screen, as if to load to the desktop, but then redisplays the login screen as if I hadn't logged in at all. I'm not sure where to begin, as I cannot login to run any commands and the grub menu does not give options to start in safe mode--it just loads directly to the latest instance of Ubuntu.
